I came here to look at a lightly used accord they had advertised. Fortunately, I had called up a mechanic and he said he would do a quick look over the car. The dealer tried hard to talk me out of the inspection. For a good reason. Turns out that while it was not listed on carfax, the car was in an accident that was severe enough that they had to fill in a large part of the bottom side of the driver's door. The battery they tried to sell with the car was so small that they had to tie it down. It was the wrong battery for the make/model/year. After those two items, I heard enough. I returned the car to the lot. The salesman tried to talk me into buying the car (no) and seeing that I was not interested, tried selling me on another car (no). A friend of mine bought a Honda Civic here a few years ago. Within 3 months the car started making very odd noises. Avoid this place like the plague. read more

We arrived at 10 or so, filled out the intake paperwork, then waited in the waiting room for over a half hour to be called. After everyone in the room was called but us I eventually needed to introduce myself to Rory Dimick the service manager and ask if he'd seen our paperwork. Ten minutes later Rory called us in pretty much tried to quickly hustle us through the intake without listening to our concerns and questions. Maybe because it's a free service that came with the car and they won't make any money off it? DO NOT USE THIS DEALER!!! I'll describe how we got here, but our experience ended with the 'Used Car Manager' literally chasing us out of the dealership screaming 'OBVIOUSLY YOU HAVEN'T BEEN MARRIED THAT LONG...GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!'. I was actually afraid that he might punch my husband! We test drove two used cars, BOTH were filthy (crushed Doritos in the center console among other things). This was explained away by the AWFUL manager who just shrugged his shoulders & said...'well, that's because the sales managers had been driving the cars.' Like that makes it okay. I'm so glad it was your slimy sales guys leaving old food in the car & not someone else. Despite the gross-ness inside the cars, one was actually what we were looking for & since Doritos can be cleaned up we made an offer. We offered a price & were told that they could not go that low. We said that was fine & we would continue to look. If what they were proposing was really the lowest price, then we would be back. Once we stood up to leave, things got really...INTERESTING! The 'Used Car Manager' came over & asked us if we would stay if he could beat our independent loan offer. We said we would see what he could do but we had a very good rate from our bank. From that moment on, he started belittling us asking us why we didn't want to save money & why we wouldn't go with him. We were more concerned with the total amount vs the monthly payment (his deal would only have saved us appx $5 per month). When we said that we wouldn't be able to meet on a price today & that we'd be back if we couldn't find a better deal, he started calling us names & even insulted our marriage implying that I didn't know what a jerk my husband was & that our marriage wouldn't last long. That is when we got up to walk out. He then followed us out of the dealership yelling the entire time. It was the most unbelievable experience & I would NEVER go back to the dealership. We are a young couple who will be buying many more cars over our lifetime & this dealer just lost our business forever. We are also telling everyone we know about this story so they never go there. No longer Jim Doten Honda. It was bought out by a company from Texas and i've only had problems with their service. I've taken my car there 5 times...the first time because it was the only place near my house that was covered by my car insurance, the last four because they kept getting it wrong. Service manager i talked to is great in helping me resolve everything, but the rest of the service reps there are unprofessional. They try to pass the buck everywhere but where it belongs...with them. They did poor work on my car and in the end tried to get me to pay for a rental car they gave me while they had to redo the work. Tried to get an oil change after being told the day before that I could drop just drop in for an express. Waited out side and then inside with no assistance. Then told by a manager that they were slammed and folks had been waiting two hours and that they couldn't take me today. Upset after making a special trip there that took me 20 minutes out of my way. Got a recall notice in mail the other week, so I called and scheduled an appointment. Called ahead and asked how long this takes, and they said it'll be less than 90 min. I got there, and the manager tells me that it'll be ready @ 3PM instead - That's 4 hours. But didn't make a big deal about it. Waited for the call to come in at home, but started to worry around 4PM, and haven't heard from them yet. So I called them, only to find out that they've gone home for the day. To make matters even worse, they're closed on Sunday, which means that I don't have my car for the weekend. WTF? Not even a call to warn me about this? Scanning through the reviews for this place, there are others who have had similar experience. Obviously, they don't seem to care what people think of them. They tarnish Honda's reputation. CAR DEALERSHIP REVIEW Alright folks buying from car dealers have always been a bit tricky; either you dont get the price you want, or the sales folks are too aggressive, etc. etc... This is the first time I can comfortably say that I have had a pleasant experience buying a pre-owned used car from a dealer. There were no cluster of sales folks at the curb, there was no high pressure sales, and especially no dramatic "i'll take your offer to my manager (Sales guy writes number down, runs behind glass doors, comes back [repeat])." Working with Brian was effortless, we saw the car, test drove it, and made an offer. After he clearly explained his bottom line we agreed upon a price. The paperwork/finance process though daunting was made to feel extremely easy. The finance guy John was clear and very easy to work with. The showroom in general is smaller than most and the experience of working with the sales team is definitely more personal and friendly. read more

Walked out of there with a great deal on a Prius! Geo was an honest, no pressure saesman who made the entire experience very pleasant. The cars I saw on the website were the exact cars I saw on the lot when I got there. This is a smaller dealership with a great selection of very nice late model used cars for much less than all the other dealerships I shopped. I got the make and model I wanted for about $2000 less than I saw at other places. These guys are worth a serious look, you can get an amazing deal from very nice people. read more

This honda auto repair shop is the worst repair shop I've ever been to. My car wouldn't start this morning so I had AAA come to jump my car. The man preformed this battery check said the battery need to be changed. I went to honda since I have a warranty on the battery. When I get there they said I needed to pay 150 dollars out of pocket just to look at the battery and to reconfirm that it was even though I explained to them that I was sure!!! This was ridiculous!!! They also started saying how I'm probably going to need this part and blah blah blah. I just looked at the man with this "are you kidding me?" Face. I turned around, went into my car and drove away. I wish I had known before going here to buy a new car this past week, but this dealership is slimy and has no room for negotiation. I just got back to the Bay Area and heard that there have been pickets here and a huge rat blown up thing outside for a while...well thanks guys for the warning! Has anyone else had as much hatred for one dealership as I do with this place? I have read that the mechanics there are helpful and trustworthy, but I wish I could say the same for the car salesmen. I honestly don't have the time for negative reviews, but I appreciate Yelp reviews and hope to at least caution other consumers so they avoid what I experienced. A few months ago, I was looking for a Honda Odyssey and was asked by the internet salesman to come in to the dealership He seemed nice and caring at first, but was pushy and distant later on. At first I refused to go into the dealership until he found out for if the van he was giving me a quote for had an RES, I explained that I had requested a quote online because I have children and was trying to save time and avoid stereotypical car dealer games. He made an amazing offer for a 2016 van that he claimed at first had only 200, miles. By the next phone call the miles had increased, by the time I made the dealership the miles were closer to 1,000 and the trim did not have the RES system- So, basically I was given a quote for a trim that I did not want. I was ready to purchase the vehicle and literally had the downpayment ready, but there were too many red flags, "paper work coming out too soon, demanding a signature to purchase" unfulfilled promises, stories that changed regarding the car itself etc, he even called another salesman who had been very honest and gave me a great quote( as if he doubted what I said)- I'll make the story short and just end with this: I was dealing with a dishonest and condescending salesman and I regret having taken my son out in the rain to only leave feeling like someone was trying to take advantage of my trust. Fortunately, before making the purchase I called my husband and he caught on to the game and gimmicks and I left. read more

When I bought my used Prius I also bought what the sales manager said was a "bumper to bumper" extended warranty. Not so. The car needs some minor electrical work and was told by the insurer that the warranty does not cover most "electrical parts or problems". What? It's a Prius...half its power is electrical. Yes I was in a hurry to get the extremely long paperwork done, so "my bad" for not checking what the warranty actually included. If you do opt for an extended warranty, spend the extra time to learn what it does and doesn't cover. read more

Last week i called to schedule a service. when i arrived they had no record of my appointment. Luckily they were not busy so my car was able to be serviced. I was pleased to find out that my broken seat belt was covered under warranty and a part would be in this week and i'd get a call to schedule the service. I got no call, so after work on Friday i called . Apparently, no one knows how to use their phone system or transfer calls between departments. In order to find out if a part , that the services department ordered last week, was in I had to call numerous times . I've been hung up on at least 5 times trying to get an answer. After about the 5th call back i found out that the part is IN and has been . I got no call from the service department to schedule the service for my broken seat belt. I'm not sure they ever would have called to schedule the appointment. I was hoping having the dealer repair close to my house would make things easier in terms of service. I am disappointed and still can not buckle my kids into the car. read more

Now I understand why the guy in the used car sales department wasn't fazed when I suggested a subpar review on Yelp. It fits right in with all the others! No surprise there! I purchased a used car from them in May of last year. Within five days of purchase I realized the rotors were warped. I called service and was told to bring it in. I arrived at 7:30 am to find that I was 12th in line. after a 45 minute wait, I was told I should have made an appointment, but "they would squeeze me in". 21/2 hours later I was told I had warped rotors, and they were machined. Did you know, it only takes about 3000 miles for machined warped rotors to go bad again? Thanks for the Band-Aid guys! I was sold a car with warped rotors, made to wait hours, given attitude by Mr. service guy, given a band-aid fix just to get me out the door and told I should "just stop talking" by Mr. Sales Guy because "my argument was just not going to get me anything anyway". FYI...My local mechanic said he would NEVER machine warped rotors...they just go bad again, and then you have an unhappy customer on your hands, and a dangerous situation on the freeway. HMMM, Sounds about right. I'll be sure to let San Mateo credit union's personal auto shopper know what a disappointing ride its been. God forbid they should send anyone else your way. I was prepared with the current kelly blue book value of my trade as well as what my trade would be worth on the resale market. I received terrible service from Berkeley Honda and will never go back there again. I brought my car in for a scheduled maintenance--when I went to pick it up the battery was dead--they said they must have left the lights on. Then they jump started it, told me the battery was fine, and all I needed to do was let it run 20 minutes. I let it run 40--dead as a doornail. I got a jump start and took it back again--big mistake. They offered to "test" the battery for $30, then said come back in an hour. An hour later they told me the battery was dead, out of warranty, and would cost me $165 for a replacement. I was stuck, so said okay. Two hours later they called to say it was ready, and the bill was over $200. They charged me $30 to "install" the new battery, plus tax.Rip off! read more

I came in looking for a used vehicle and was prepared to purchase a vehicle. However, one way or another, they always find ways of changing the deal or making errors that make me question not only their sanity but also the quality of their vehicle. Their staff and manager (Ken and Bob the owner), aside from lacking knowledge of the vehicles, are prone to price miscommunications. On multiple occasions, the offer that they made was revoked and changed even after my acceptance to purchase their vehicle. They are the kind of individuals to tack on added fees after a deal is finalized. I would highly recommend against visiting this dealership. Worst autorepair shop I have ever been to. First off, the service tech Rory is one of the rudest person I have ever met. He made the whole experience miserable for me. All I wanted was a quick and easy fix, but he had to make everything more complicated. I dropped my car off during before my work hours, and then he gives me a call a few hours later, saying that the repair would cost $450. I thought that the price was ridiculous for such a small repair. I told him that I'll think about it, and give him a call as soon as I made my decision. Next off, I try calling the place, and none of the lines were working. A few hours later, Rory calls me back, yelling at me, saying that I need to call him back or he is going to charge me. The phone number he also gives me is the one that is not working. So I had to call his cellphone to explain why I couldn't respond. During all of this, I made calls to other places, and everywhere gave me a quote of around 200-250. Even other honda auto centers said that the price he was giving me wasn't right. So I decided against doing the repair. When I was trying to pick my car up, the front desk person (a teenager), had no idea what he was doing (not his fault, probably didn't receive the best training). When the front desk person goes to talk to Rory about an issue, I hear Rory talking bad about me right behind my back. Poor customer service, poor everything overall. Would not recommend at all. Just dealing with Rory made everything 10x worse. read more

SERVICE DEPARTMENT REVIEW This place gets a slew of bad reviews. Dealerships work with a lot of people so it gets difficult, I suppose. Or maybe all the bad reviews have made them think...possible or not? I had an amazingly great experience that stunned me. I went in with a 2004 Odyssey I bought there, well in 2004. I always had my corner guy fix it, not them. The van kept stalling while driving; dangerous and not good. They found the throttle plate to be really dirty, so they cleaned it; $250; took them 2 hours. Van ran much better for 3 days, but started stalling again. My corner guy had just replaced the Idle Valve. They said this one looked generic and could cause problems. They kept getting a diagnostic code for it, as well, with a code for and Electronic Control Unit (that costs $1000). Rory talked frankly and was not racing into replacing the $1000 part, knowing also, that replacing the part I just had installed by my corner guy would not thrill me. I went for it. They tested the car for me, driving it around town to make sure it would not stall. It did. So, I had to wait until Monday when their best mechanic came. They had already given me courtesy rides to work in West Oakland and from work back to the shop, when the problem persisted and they wanted to hang onto it, they gave me a loaner car. Cool stuff. They hooked my car up to a different computer and let it run in the shop until it stalled again so they could get more specific diagnostic codes at the moment of failure. Turns out it was a wire in the steering column that was part of the sensory mechanisms. They replaced the wire and charged me nothing for the whole thing. That's right, charged me NOTHING. Reason? They replaced a part that did not need to be replaced because of their misdiagnosis. Now let's talk straight up. My corner guy replacing the Idle Valve removed codes they needed to diagnos this correctly. They went out of their way to make sure it was fixed, then took responsibility for not getting it correct the first time out. This is customer service I have only seen on the east coast, especially with a slew of shuttle rides to and from work. These guys deal with a lot of people, so maybe they have moments of not being on their best behavior. But I was treated with a lot of care and consideration. If you do have a bad time, check out their cappucino machine. It steams real milk and gives you shots of espresso ground before your eyes. read more

After 1/2 hour I demanded service and one of the pissed off managers got off the phone. When I said that I needed a new mirror, they told me to go to the parts department and get it. I told them I did not know the part number and the manager did it himself while being noticeably upset, huffing and puffing and giving me dirty looks. The part was not in stock. read more

Took my car in for my first scheduled 6 month maintenance. When I received my car back there were oil stains all over my leather seats and floor mats. I emailed them about the stains and received no response from Carter. I do not recommend bringing your car here to get work done due to their lack of attention to detail, carelessness, and poor follow-up service when they mess up. I informed them that for these reasons I will not be taking my car back to them. Considering the fact that it doesn't take much effort for them to put down paper mats or plastic on the seats, it causes me concern about the other types of service they perform and how sloppily they perform other tasks. read more

My husband and I both called this dealership the same day, on two separate occasions, as we saw a 2010 Acura MDX they posted on Craigslist for $29,995 with only 28K miles. It seemed like a huge steal of a deal. The only problem was that the ad didn't have any pictures of the car on there. My husband called the dealership in the morning and talked to an employee named Brian. He expressed his interest in the car but stated he'd like to see some pictures first. Brian took down my husband's number and asked if he could call him back because he had to check and see if the car was still available. It took about an hour or so for Brian to call my husband back. He said he was the only one working there but that if my husband wanted pictures, it would take a few hours. He didn't seem too interested in our business or eager for us to buy the car. We understood it was a wonderful deal and that the employee probably thought the car would sell itself but still, he just seemed totally uninterested in our business. I tried my hand at calling the dealership myself (in hopes of getting a quicker answer about the pictures) and talked to a guy named Nick. I, too, said I wanted to see some pictures of the car. He took down my number and said that if I wanted pictures, it was not going to be for a while. He also said someone was going to come look at the car today, so if it was still available, he'd send me the pictures later. I thought the customer service we received from both employees were lacking in so many respects. Even if someone was going to look at the car, could we please see some pictures? We live in Sacramento and were actually going to drive all the way to Berkeley to get that car, so I was surprised at how we literally had to beg them for the pictures.To cut a long story short, 10 hours later and we still didn't get a call back from either of the employees we talked to. In addition, I received an obnoxious and rude private message from someone on here about my review of this dealership. This person also went to great lengths to write a review about this dealership and point out how much of a moron I am and how excellent his experience with Brian was. I assume this person was either one of the two employees my husband and I spoke to or an immature friend/family member of the dealership that took my review very personally. Why else would he be so offended? I find this strange, especially since I'm not the only Yelper who has reviewed this dealership poorly. Does this person go around bad mouthing everyone that leaves bad ratings for this dealership? If so, it's definitely not boosting this dealership's business in any way. A bad review is a bad review. It should be taken as constructive criticism and the dealership should try to learn from it and improve upon their business. read more

I had a great experience with Berkeley Honda while I was car shopping. I worked with Brian and he was super professional, forthcoming with information, and never pressured me one bit. I decided on a different car, ultimately, but it had nothing at all to do with the service here. Truthfully, my preference would have been to give Brian the business, but the car I wanted in the end wound up being at a different place. Thank you Brian for treating me so well, for speaking to me with respect (talking to me specifically about mechanical things with detail and accuracy - which dealers often don't do with women), and for being so chill and mellow. We are in the midst of an issue with this establishment. Went to look at two possible cars, neither of which was on the lot. Decided on a car, bought it with a dent in the hood. We were given a due sheet for the work to be done. We called to set the appointment two times with no return call. Third call spoke with associate, but didn't get a call back for almost a week. Finally take the car in and the work cannot be done in one day as we were told. Also the loaner car we got was given with the check engine light on. "There is nothing we can do..." yeah, that's about par for this horrible course. We were originally going to buy 2 cars. The second will definitely not be with these guys. read more

He treated me with respect and he went down a little on the asking price. At the Oakland Honda dealership, they actually acted like I was insane when I asked for a price reduction. My experience with Berkeley Honda Service Division began in 2000 and ended in 2011. My early experience with them was that they foucussed on everything (shuttle serviice, coffee, extravgant promises never to be fulfilled) but the reason I went there (competent auto maintenance at reasonable prices within agreed-upon time frame). Consequently, i've only taken my cars here when Honda Warranty rules required it or convenience (there are 2 blocks from where I used to live), NEVER because I was happy with them. Recently, I had a nearly year-long saga to get the non-functioning Sat Nav system replaced. When I took it in, they acknowledged that it was non-functioning and said it was 100% covered under the 36-month warranty. 3 months and dozens of phone calls later, the service manager claimed that he had ordered the parts "months ago" but they'd not arrived "due to the tsunami" (I later discovered that these parts are readily available in the U.S.). He then (outrageously) claimed that now it was past 36 months, I'd have to pay close to $1,000 for this repair when the delay was NOT of my doing. After many phone calls and visits, I ascertained that this repair WAS 100% covered under my extended HondaCare warranty (which he knew I had but claimed that my repair was not covered). Finally, I got his agreement that there would be no charge but this was already 5 months after it had stopped functioning. Several weeks later, I called the Parts Division of Berkeley Honda on another matter and, out curiosity, asked them if they had received my SatNav parts and that nobody from the Service Division (which sources parts only through their own Parts DIvision) had ever ordered my needed parts! This was despite the Service Manager telling me on 3 occasions that he personally had ordered them and had regularly checked with the Parts Division to see if they'd arrived (clearly not true since if he'd done that, he'd have been told that no such parts were on order. Over several months, I got dozens of what I would call sociopathic telephone calls and messages from the Service Manager that he was doing all possible to get my parts. He seemed willing to put more energy into lying than it would have taken to simply do his job and get the parts. Finally, I moved to Oakland 3 months ago. Honda of Oakland had my SatNav system replaced less than 10 days after I alerted them to the problem. Moral? Don't get anywhere NEAR Berkeley Honda. They are a disgrace to Honda Corporation of America. read more

Bought a used car tonight. The greeter was nice enough, but the finance guy John Gonzales was a RUDE, CONDESCENDING JERK. Talked down to me like I was a little kid explaining where to sign (really? so I put my name on these little x's here? How do I spell my name again?); admonished me for not wanting to leave blank spaces in the contracts I was signing (I consider that suspicious), accused me of not knowing how much cash I brought, and smirked and giggled while counting my cash down payment because there were lots of small bills. Excuse me? What exactly is so f****in FUNNY about my money? It's as good as anybody elses. When I called him out and said I don't appreciate his tone, and also asked what was so funny, he absolutely didn't care and made no attempt to apologize for his UNPROFESSIONAL behavior. He just said (insincerely) "I'm sorry you don't like my tone." Translation: "I don't care that I offended you and tough - too bad." Wish I'd read yelp before I went; would have gone elsewhere and now I'm also concerned about the quality of the car I bought since this place so obviously SUCKS.
