Grocery shopping is one of my favorite things to do and Berkeley Bowl West is without a doubt on the top of my list for grocery shopping. It is glorious. They have such a large section of produce - both organic and regular. You will find aalll kinds of veggies and fruits. 20 varieties of mushrooms, 10 kinds of kale, and most regional vegetables. They have an excellent selection of fresh seafood and good quality meats. You can get fresh pasta and noodles, fantastic cheeses, fresh nut butters and preserves, and a large selection of dried fruits - raspberries to mango to apricots. I really like their salad and soup selections too. If you don't have a shopping list, you are in big trouble. It's very tempting to just throw all the wonderful things in your cart. I know this for a fact as I have done it multiple times (no real regrets :P). If you live in east bay and have not yet visited a Berkeley bowl, do yourself a favor and go ASAP! read more

Hell yeah - Berkeley Bowl West is the shiiit. This is where my rat buddies and I hang out the most - they got the dumpster in the parking lot which is full of flavorful scraps and the portions are huuuge. 100% the best trash in the city. Trust me on this one. But sometimes I want to go inside and have some groceries human style. Yes, it's crowded in there but that should be expected because it got eeeeeverything - everything meaning fresh ass produce, fresh ass noodles, dry section that has it all from fire ass dried candied ginger to beans for days, easy ass grab-and-go lunches (that katsu rice ball tho), the nice ass butchers, and even the asian selection isn't bullshit. This is a better location as it feels less cramped but it can def be a mission to dodge all the frantic energy that seems to possess everyone in the store. Regardless it's worth it so scurry around and find yourself some bomb ass groceries. Or you can find the fermented kind outside where we rats frequent - just watch out for the forklifts cause that's how my homie lost his tail. read more

Super crowded, even in the mornings and the spaces in the parking lot are tight, but the selection is very diverse and prices are generally reasonable. There is a bargain section in the back for produce, which can be hit or miss. I also like that the baskets have wheels so that you don't have to lug a heavy basket around-- but it's easy to bump into people because of the crowds. That said, the checkout lines are usually well-staffed so that you don't have to wait too long. The food at the cafe is a bargain! I have not met a lot of breakfast burritos outside of Albuquerque that I have liked, but these came close. The hash browns were pretty good too, and you get an orange slice with your breakfast. Easily my favorite grocery store ever, and every time I'm in the East Bay I make a point to visit! From bulk bins, to produce, to locally made specialty products, the variety of items they stock is unbelievable. They also stock a lot of unique beers and packaged drinks, and it's a great place to find something special to bring to a dinner party. Also prefer this location over the original because it's more spacious and is easier to park at. read more

Two stars seem harsh because I love berkeley bowl in the mornings when no one is there but anytime in the afternoon, it gets very crowded and stressful so I find myself avoiding shopping there these days. I think part of the problem is they insist on gigantic shopping carts the size you'd have at Costco. In a small store, this leads to customers colliding with other customers. The checkout lines get long and people block the aisles. Tempers flare. BBW could easily ameliorate the situation by getting the small double decker carts that Trader Joe's and Walmart has. They are sized for just two shopping baskets and are much more mobile. Less people banging into each other, the lines won't seem as long etc. And of course, hire more cashiers or have express lines. Or open another store in Emeryville. :) read more

Great Little market in Berkeley. I have passed by this place many times and never thought of going in as I did not know what treasures were hiding inside. Great selection of fresh produce with an amazing meet counter. The deli is serving up all kinds of lunch options. It is larger than any Whole Pay check store and prices are much better. Next time I know I will be in the area I will do my grocery shopping for the week. TIP Check out the bargain produce section in the very back of the store. read more

Best produce section around and the prices for organic meet or beat local chain stores. The rest is pretty pricey but worth it. The butcher shop in the store is awesome. It's very Berkleyish. Oh and they have a deli/food area.. very good. I'd go more often but a bit far. The cashiers are really good and fast so long lines move fast. We've been going to the two Berkeley bowls for over 20 years. The produce selection is marvelous. slowly but surely, the prices on nonproduce items creep up and up and up. Fewer and fewer items affordable for us middle-class plebeians, which is fine. We just go there for the produce and the occasional treat. Now they've cut their hours to close an hour earlier every day. That last hour was the one time you could go there, and not have to wait 30 minutes at the meat counter, or wait 15 minutes to get into a checkout line. I am quickly learning what a gem Berkeley Bowl is. Growing up, I remember Berkeley Bowl as the hippie market with the bulk bins. Well, there's still plenty of bulk bins here but there is SOOOO much more now. It's like Sprouts combined with Whole Foods...without the crazy price tags. We usually get beverages first before we get to the actual shopping. I've had their chai lattes, drip coffees and fresh juices now. The condiment counter has the usual suspects and I did spy oat milk there on our last visit. (I may be the last person to try oat milk but I hear there are some serious oat milk fiends out there.) Almond milk for me, thanks. The store has an entire side dedicated to the hot/cold bars, sushi, salads, sandwiches, etc. Being in Berkeley, I was not surprised to find at least a third of the offerings were veg/vegan. I usually grab an umeboshi (pickled plum) onigiri when I'm there. The Japanese goods are made by B-Dama, which is the same vendor at Swan's Marketplace. Yum-o. I would say the produce is the best part of BB West. Pineapples are back in season and you can get a sliced, half pineapple for .99c. SO sweet and love that they took care of the hardest part of the slicing already. You can't beat it. There are usually bulk specials - we grabbed a bag of green bell peppers for .59c/lb. These sell for .99c/lb. individually so keep your eyes open for those deals. Baskets of Driscoll strawberries were .99c. Look, I'm all for Farmers' Markets but this really is hard to beat, in terms of freshness and price. It's too bad I don't live closer... read more

Massive selection of fresh produce, great variety of bulk goods, fresh meats and seafood, pantry items, health and beauty items, more unique flowers, and the list goes on. Don't miss the fantastic bulk section in the back left! Reasonable prices all around, comparable or cheaper than Safeway. I LOVE Berkeley Bowl. I can't even express how much I love Berkeley Bowl. Truly the happiest place on Earth if you love cooking, baking, or just strolling through farmer's markets. They have SO much selection for practically everything you could want at a grocery store, with a particularly larger selection of "health" foods and brands. There's a gigantic produce selection, both organic and not organic and largely local-ish, as well as a bargain section at the back left of the store. There's usually produce, sometimes some pantry items in the bargain section. Unlike some other grocery stores, the quality of the food there is really good. Sometimes a bit moldy and mushy, but typically very good at $1 per bag. In the summer for example, you'll likely find millions of boxes of berries at $1 each if they haven't run out already. In the fall and winter, apples and sweet potatoes. The selection can be quite wide, but it's hit or miss whether there's anything left. Besides the bargain and produce section, I love taking a look at the bulk section where they have flours, grains, beans, snacks, baking supplies, spices, teas, pastas, nuts, and other pantry items. There's also a robust cheese section, a deli and premade food section, among the other magical sections of the store. I HIGHLY recommend checking the store out! I prefer this location a bit over the other, as it seems a bit more spread out and open with super high ceilings. read more

HUGE produce section. Great individual-sized dessert selection. Large section of bins where you can get exactly the amount of grains, snacks, nuts, etc. that you want. Crowded with lots of busy folks who look like they know where they are going, while i am in their way oogling the food choices. Interesting Berkeley people watching opportunity. Unless you are buying a lot, it's better to use a hand basket here, rather than a large cart. This place seems to be like a budget version of Whole Foods, but much larger. Plenty of parking, but parking lot looks kind of dirty (not sure of this matters?). I would shop here all the time if I lived in this area. read more

Wanted to clarify - I LOVE BERKELEY BOWL WEST. I rate them 4 stars ( 4 stars because this market can be way too pricey). With that said, I bought a small Chow Mein today. The lady that helped me was nice, BUT OMG - she gave me such a small amount of food!! Like my box of Chow Mein feels like carrying air in a box. It cost $5.99 for a Chow Mein I can finish after two spoon full. NOT WORTHY of the price. If you want Chow Mein don't buy from Berkeley Bowl - go to a local Chinese Restaurant instead. I will suggest their burrito/burrito bowls are worth the price. They are generous with the amount of food they give for their burritos. So next time, think twice before getting their box food from their hot menu. Stay healthy! read more

Amazing variety of organic fruits and vegetables as well as other products. The staff is generally helpful, and I make a point to wait in line for the cashiers I know are friendly and easy going. I would take off a point for ambiance though. While the store is clean and organized, the isles are slightly too narrow making it hard to get around when things are busy. If you come here when it's busy, you'll see what I mean. Still worth the trip though especially if you go during off-peak hours. read more

It is huge...bigly. So big, that it has a cafe across from the store serving breakfast and lunch items. The cafe also has a coffee bar...nice. Definitely I will have to come back to shop and have lunch. I was amazed at what Berkeley Bowl West had to offer - wide range of fruits and vegetables; assortment of breads, rolls, baguettes; mouth watering baked goods (cakes, cookies, pastries, doughnuts, fruit tarts); deli meats and cheese for sandwiches; floral section; meat and seafood - all at reasonable prices. They even have an area separate from the store with loads of produce (fruits and veggies) for quick sales at 99¢ a bag. Also at the bargain price of 99¢ were plastic containers of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. I haven't seen kiwi fruit going for 39¢ each in a good while. The purpose of my visit was to attend the Stonewall Kitchen Jam Tour. They were supposed to be there doing a demo of their products at 12 noon. Instead the lady at the info desk told me it was scheduled for 1PM. Unfortunately, I could not wait until 1 PM, as I had another event to attend at 1:30 PM in Oakland at Mosswood Park - Oakland Carnaval with appearances by Samba Funk and other dance troupes. Purchase: a bag of zucchinis for 99¢, a plastic carton of blackberries for $1.69, 3 kiwi fruits for $1.17 and a French cruller for $1.29. Parking lot is across the street with ample parking. Public transportation (AC #72) is within walking distance of about 2 to 3 blocks away on San Pablo Avenue. I love this store. I have to say their prices are more reasonable than Whole Foods. I wish they were closer to Alameda, but it's all good. As I have mentioned above, I will return (with time on hand) to do more browsing and shopping. read more

I almost have an issue with how much I frequent this place. I love Berkeley bowl so much. I even have one of the shirts. I wish they had a frequent buyer program. The staff is all cool. This store is near my work off of Heinz ave. It's a busy place to go at pretty much anytime of the day. I go to the cafe at least once per week (it's open until 4 M-F). My favorites are the shrimp/avocado salad, the Panko chicken kale Cesar, and the beyond burger (pro tip - get the spicy mayo added if your not vegan) and get a side salad instead of the fries. Everything is tasty and plentiful. The cauliflower crust pizza is also good. The store itself has a lot of great food - great produce, good sushi area, dessert bar, bulk food, fresh flowers, and the cheese area is top notch. It's a little like Whole Foods, but with out the greed and stuffiness. read more

Quintessential Berkeley. I was out of town for several weeks, and you know what I missed most? A grocery store. In my defense it's easily the most impressive grocery store blessed to us mortals. BBW is the reason why my idea of a good time now is strolling through aisles of organic produce at 10am on a Monday. So this place was packed on a Sunday evening. It's suppose to be a big grocery store but with the amount of people and carts, it was claustrophobic. Almost a mad house for some reason. That being said, they offer so much good food here. I mean you imagine it, they've got it stocked somewhere. There's also a coffee bar which is nice and random. You've got your standard grocery staples like a bakery, deli, and all the food and drink you can buy. There's millions of flowers up front lining the wall, can't miss them. The goods even spill outside the store with big seasonal items in huge square shipping containers. Grab what you can, it may run out with the amount of shoppers inside today. Maybe at a different time I'd have a better shopping experience. I just know if I need something and have the time, I'd be fine going here. read more

If crowds or parking put you off, come here on a Friday night. You'll practically have the place to yourself. I'm something of a grocery store connoisseur. I love browsing the aisles of food shops wherever I can find them. And when I travel, I almost always bring back edible souvenirs. Visiting Berkeley Bowl West is sort of like going on an exotic trip with the many amazing products they carry. The bulk offerings are truly remarkable. You can find everything from spiced rooibos chai, dried organic persimmons and hibiscus flowers to azuki beans, roasted buckwheat groats and garbanzo flour. My personal favorites are the honey roasted sesame sticks, genmaicha tea and dark chocolate chipotle almonds. I also spend a lot of time in this area of the store when I'm getting ready to bake. They have a great selection of special flours, spices and teas that are worth a closer look. Berkeley Bowl West also has an above average cheese selection, solid wine offerings and a huge amount of both conventional and organically grown produce. You can get a made to order sandwich or burrito here too. After years of shopping at this East Bay institution, I can safely say if you can't find a fruit, vegetable or spice here, it may not exist! read more

This place is the cafe attached to Berkeley Bowl West. You can't miss it. The interior is spacious with plenty of seating. It's brightly lit and easy to read the menu selections. I came in on Wednesday looking to grab a quick bite to eat after getting groceries. I ordered their special of the day, which was a lobster roll and sweet potato fries for 10.99. Yes that's right, a LOBSTER roll and a side of sweet potato fries for only 10.99! The portion size was good as they don't skimp on the lobster and was quite tasty. Also the fries were perfectly fried. The ingredients were all fresh. Before I knew it, I had already finished the whole meal. Overall, I was pleasantly impressed by the food I got here and would definitely come back if I come back to Berkeley Bowl West (especially if Wednesday's always have that lobster roll special). Would not be opposed to trying the other options as well. read more

I've visited Berkeley countless times over the past 20 years, and this was my first visit to Berkeley Bowl. Just an awesome grocery store with such a vast array of items. It definitely is a better, a bit less expensive version of Whole Foods. The produce section is of good quality, neatly organized, and has such a wide variety. The bulk items, prepared foods, bakery, cheese, were just some of the things I looked at but couldn't really buy as much since I was just visiting a friend for a few days. On a weekday, it was great walking around but I returned during the weekend and it was super crowded walking around the aisles and at the checkout lines. Minor quibble. I'm already looking forward to coming back again on the next trip. read more

Hands down one of the best markets I've ever been to. As a cook and as a regular, this place never seems to fail at amazing me each time I have walked in and shopped. The food selection is 10/10. Everything you can dream of is in this place. The people are amazing 10/10 the ambiance is 10/10 love the location and what they have to offer. We need one of these in or near Sacramento please!
