Ive been coming here for probably over 15 years. After moving back from the LBC I could drive 20 mins and be in Little India aka Artesia is hard to find a big Indian store section with having to drive to the South Bay. This is a quaint littel store that carries a lot. The owner is very friendly and remembers his customers. I don't come as often as my guys is allergic to garlic ,(there goes the garlic ginger paste I used regularly. But they carry Koolfi Brand (store located in San Leandro) ice cream. So I stopped off after work specifically to get the Kamala and rose ice cream. Kamala means lotus. It was in stock and I also picked up guava with a hint of chili. Can't wait to try, my stomach might not agree with the lactose, but didn't grumble last time. Also got some samosas as getting off work and didn't feel like cooking. (You will need to warm and they don't come with chutney) But I most come because of the friendlness of the owners and I can get in and out quickly. read more

I've become a regular at Bombay Spice House, despite the number of alternatives in the area. Their selection is comprehensive, the fresh samosas and chai are the perfect thing to warm you up on a cool winter's morning, and the owner is always SO HELPFUL. His warmth and friendliness is a big part of why I keep coming back for my Indian staples, even after moving out of the area - it really is a local business that I want to see continue to prosper. Side note: if you have a car you are precious about, park on the street. The parking spaces in the adjacent lot are quite tight and I've definitely winced at least once as an auntie has opened her door straight into my car. read more

So there's a bunch of South Asian stores in the area, and through out the Bay Area in fact. But this one's got me by the __(your choice of words)__. Por que? The snack bits like samosas and ladoos? No, those have been gone as COVID hit. Chai is still there though. The cleanliness? Ah, yes. This is one of the few with a bright, manicured interior and lack of an odor. Wait, no! That's not why they got me coming back. The pooja section? No, I'm not Hindu. The two sections of cookies? No. I'm Chi, not the Cookie Monster. But por que dos areas for cookies? The classic Indian biscuit/cookies are to the left, with the Digestives, the osmania/pistachio/tea with girl face/etc cookies, so why the bunch in the back on the right aisle? This store sells Sri Lankan products too! (And I believe Nepalese items as well to the right when you gave the Sri Lankan items) You may ask, what's so damn special about Sri Lankan items? Well, they carry a lemon puff cookie* that I have yet to see elsewhere. They have also multiple selections of Sri Lankan sambals, many of which contain maldive fish, their take on katsuobushi. Try it and you'll fall in love! It's akin to the XO sauce of HK. If you know what you want to get, do call ahead. They occasionally run out of stock. *Weird thing is that the Brits would've bright the lemon sandwich cookies to both South Asia and Hong Kong, and indeed they are common in HK, yet I haven't seen them here in any Cantonese market! First of all, thank you so much for running the place with care during covid. I particularly appreciate the attention to detail for example with the limits you have enforced on the frozen food items per person amongst other things. The owner of the shop was helpful, friendly and even trusted me to pay for something I bought later. The place itself has all the essentials I look for - admittedly I am sucker for Indian tiffin, snacks, rusk et al and that's what I go there for. They even have garlic-less versions of Indian vegetable and mango pickle and Maggi ketchup. Don't forget to pick up a pack of Good Day biscuits on the way out :). This place has good variety of things. The one thing they should improve on is transparency though. Majority of the items have no price sticker on them. On top of that they dont even have a system where you can see the price of each item as it is scanned at the counter. I was thinking the bill would clarify the pricing but alas their has bill has no names of any items, I don't even see the point of this bill. I would have loved to come to this place as my regular grocery store but until they change their ways and be more open about the pricing, I don't see myself coming here again. Its not the biggest Indian store around but it keeps pulling me back to it because of its ideal (for me) mix of snacks, spices, and staples. I love that I can get idly and dosa batter, cooked and uncooked rotis, Indian herbs and spices, and various flavours of kulfis. They have all the basics, and then some more. Love this store. Very humble and nice owners. Always so welcoming and helpful. They have variety of incenses . A lot of statue options. We also visited during Deewali, the store itself was nice and bright. People there were even more brighter. Love the store. Slightly on the smaller side (compared with Milan International) but it was nice and neatly organised. Love they had so many organic options - good to see 24 Mantra brand :) I used to buy that in Bombay when I lived there. Good options of rice, pulses, ghee, herbs& spices, fresh veggies, chutneys, oils, sweets, cooking utensils and so much more! The staff was super friendly and helpful. The owner of the store was so sweet! I was trying to find the Koolfi creamery ice cream. My friend wanted that for her birthday. The first place I looked at didn't have the flavor she wanted. I called this place and asked if had the flavor and they did! The Owner was able to hold one for me! I was so excited to hear that they had the flavor I needed! I came into the store and he came up to me and told me he held one in the back for me. He wanted to make sure it wasn't on the floor. Great Indian Grocery store in Berkeley! Hours are 10am-7pm Tues-Sun & are closed on Mon. Great selection of Indian herbs & spices as well as ayurvedic goods. I picked up: sriracha sauce black salt for making yummy tofu scramble amchur powder aka unripe powdered dehydrated mango chaat masala coconut oil All herbs & spices are fresh. They all have an expiration date or "best by" date so are fresher here than other Indian Grocery stores I've been to & plus goods are affordable as they are reasonably priced. They even had a good range of cookware & thali plates. If you want to get creative & experimental pick up an authentic Indian cookbook. I recommend "Vegan Indian Cooking" by Anupy Singla. I've shopped here for years. It's a small place but much better curated than bigger stores. Their organic section is extensive and so is their pooja section. They DO have fresh veggies and chilies too. Honestly it's a bit magical how much they carry, there is literally nothing in my list that they don't have. The store owner and staff are super helpful in all ways including getting things into your car. And even if you are not South Asian they make you feel like you belong. My mission: to find powder forms of tandoori and garam masalas. It's not too hard to figure out how this one ended. Pro: --Friendlier than most shops in Berkeley. No fooling. Sure, you would probably expect it'd be friendlier since it's west of Sacramento Street, but one never knows, particularly since Berkeley Bowl West set up camp at Heinz, and Berkeley as a rule sucks. Anyhow, as soon as I walked through the door I was greeted (sincerely) and asked (also sincerely) if I needed help finding anything. I'm glad I agreed because -- They have a pretty expansive selection of exotic (to my eyes) stuff. It would have taken me quite a while to find the two masalas, and while I didn't really have the time or energy to go spelunking, something tells me that as I start cooking more Indian food, I shall be back. -- Easy to get to in the East Bay sense. It's on University between 6th and San Pablo. -- Parking seems plentiful. The parking I observed was all on University, but there was no shortage on a sunny Saturday afternoon. On the down side all of the spaces are 1 hour and metered, so bring change (or be fast if you want to stick to the Man like I did) Con: -- It's in Berkeley. No matter how nice the staff are, there's always going to be a few sterling exemplars down from the hills shuffling about, thinking their noble thoughts. I got stuck behind one in line: he wanted to pay with a card. After a couple of minutes it became clear that there was some sort of problem with the card reader but the coin didn't drop for him until the ten minute mark. He then (and only then) queried "Would it be faster if I paid cash?" Kudos to him for noticing at all. 5 stars for friendliness, stock on hand, and relative convenience of location, and negative 1 star for not keeping out the riffraff from the hills. Price is super expensive in comparison to any other indian store. I got their samosa which was cold and the potato stuffing was smelling bad. I am not sure how old was that. That can actually make you sick. I got kalakand sweet which was so hard like a rock and could break someone's head. Also peda was all flour. Sweets were just flour and tasteless. read more

Well maintained and clean store. The floor is absolutely clean/shining and all the shelves were stocked well. I found every thing I was looking for, saving me a trip to Fremont or other grocery stores. Helped me not to postpone my Indian specific grocery needs till the weekend. All kinds of Indian spices, pickles, lentils, rice, flour, different variety papadam etc. basically, they carry everything an Indian store should carry. I don't know how my mom knows about this place but it's been her go to place for hair dye for YEARS! The owner knows my mom very well and through English tainted Indian and Chinese accent they are able to communicate and have become good friends. My mom has recommended who knows how many white haired Chinese ladies desperate for healthier hair dye products here. People have always complimented my mom on her hair and how healthy it looks, she always is willing to drive to Berkeley and bring them a bag back to sample. She writes down her "secret" recipe and shares the knowledge. I remember roaming around the isles in high school looking at all the different interesting things they had. My first taste of samosas where here when I saw a woman leave with a bag full and tugged at my moms jacket to get me one to try. Just to be politically correct, shouldn't this place be called Mumbai Spice House? Since it is India we're talking about and not Iraq, I think I can safely say without offending anyone that this place is the BOMB!! They're so helpful here and I always walk out with more than I intended to. It's crazy that they sell hair dye. I heard it's hot with the aunties. Personally, I love the freshly brewed chai and the smell of incense burning. When I'm here I like to role play and pretend I'm in one of those crazy Bollywood love stories. I hide behind a spice aisle and peek out to see my boyfriend reveal himself and the man he is behind the jars of sauces, slowly walking towards me at a steady pace -- eyes filled with intent. I let him get close but then I playfully bounce away secretly wanting him to chase me further down the aisle, all the while preserving a sense of mystery covering my face with the mesh pink scarf I kept tucked in my pocket. His strides are faster and longer keeping me in his sight. He grabs my shoulder with one hand and whips me around to face him. We pause for a moment. Eyes locked. Our faces somehow start to lean in towards each other. Eyelids slowly closing. We are just about to kiss it seems when all of a sudden I hear... "Ma'am, your total is $11.39." Dammit. This store is probably on the smaller side, but it's packed with good things and feels just right for me. When I venture out for my occasional Thums Up shopping excursion, this is where I land up. For indian groceries, this is the place to go! They have a good selection of.. everything! I got all my spices, lentils, atta and pretty much anything you'd need to not only cook indian food, but just have indian products in your home. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've seen stuff here I haven't seen back at home in India. The people here are also really nice. One of them came up to me and asked me if I found everything ok, and the guy at the checkout was really friendly as well. They were very helpful when I asked about some of the spices as well. On the down side, I'm pretty sure their stuff is priced higher than usual. The same groceries are definitely cheaper in the peninsula region, unsure how they compare to SF rates however. read more
