* This is a little long, but I think you will find it helpful. I've been debating writing this review for the past few days since I hate writing poor reviews of private businesses. I will let you decide what you think was going on after reading this: To make a long story short, the drain plug fell out of my oil pan while one my way home on the 580 (I'm housesitting for a friend in Berkeley). Thankfully I was close enough to home that not all of the oil had drained out of my engine by the time I got there and there was no lasting damage to the engine. I had the car towed to Berkeley Auto Care the next day. I was pleased when they called me back to tell me they replaced the drain plug, topped off the oil, and drove it around to find that everything was A ok with the engine and that I could come pick it up the next day after they cleaned all the remaining oil off of the bottom of the car. I then proceeded to seek responsibility from the Honda dealer I had the oil last changed at. The Honda dealer took responsibility, however, wanted to talk to Ricky at Berkeley Auto Care before they proceeded to make the payment. Ricky told them (before they told me I might add) that the drain plug was not actually tightening and oil was continuing to drip from the pan, the way a stripped out bolt would spin and spin as you attempt to tighten it. They told me and the Honda manager they needed to replace the entire oil pan since the threads were damaged and the bolt would never tighten (a $600 repair on top of the $230 they had already charged = $830 total). The Honda manager requested they use sealant around the threads and replace the drain plug so I can take the car to a Honda dealer where it could be inspected by their Certified mechanics. Ruben, the Honda manager, was concerned Ricky was trying to rip us off for an additional $600. Ricky would not agree to this because he, understandably, did not want to be responsible for any failures after the car left his shop. I decided to have the car towed to the nearest Honda Autocare shop in Berkeley. Honda payed for the $230 bill at Ricky's and my insurance covered the tow. Once the car arrived at the Honda repair shop the technician found that not only was the drain plug Ricky put on too small, but it wasn't even the correct type of drain plug that my car requires. This was the reason it was continuing to spin when they tried to tighten it, it was too small. Honda replaced the drain plug with an original one of the correct size, it tightened down just fine. They refilled the oil and sent me on my way at no cost to me. So far the car is running great with no sign of an oil leak so ultimately I am happy. I called Ricky as soon as I got home to tell him what Honda had found. He told me that he ordered the part from his supplier based on the year, make, and model of the car. To any other person, including myself, the evidence points to them attempting to pull a fast one to get more money out of me or the Honda dealer that was covering the cost. BUT, I can't say for sure. It was ultimately a lesson in being aware of services being rendered at your expense. I can say that I think I will stick with a Honda dealer for my future services. read more

I have used this repair shop twice now. First time was warped brake discs. Second time was a check engine light that indicated a problem in the transmission. Both times I braced for trouble and encountered none. Berkeley Auto Care fixed both problems in less than a day and made no attempts to upsell me for more expensive service. In my experience at least this has been a no nonsense repair shop. read more

These guys are very friendly and helpful! I brought my car in, and within an hour or two they had replaced my tires and given me an oil change. They also discounted my oil change. I needed it done last minute so I didn't have a chance to shop around - I don't think I necessarily got rock-bottom prices for the tires + installation but that's my fault for not having the time to comparison shop. Great service. Have brought my car in multiple times and they are always quick to get the job done. Needed to get a new headlight assembly in my car and they charged about $200 less than AutoZone estimated. Last time the worker stayed an hour past close to finish up working on my car. Why am I giving this business a Five Star Rating? Because they're worth it. I'm a qualifying expert who has several years service as a Master Mechanic while I was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. My extensive background includes gas and diesel engine rebuilds, transmissions and power trains, brakes and body repairs. Although my long qualification list is exhaustible, it suffices to say I am a mechanic's critic. Unfortunately, my career lead me into an early retirement so I could combat multiple disabilities instead. Thus, I found one day that I too needed a mechanic, to help me to do things I used to do every day. That was over 12 years ago. For the last 8 years, I have been taking my vehicle to Berkeley Auto Care and I am completely satisfied. For instance, I have had my brakes replaced over three years ago. They still work fine. I had my transmission and converter replaced two years ago both are in excellent condition . I also replace the onboard computer. Even so, I have had trivial things such as the batteries, oil and wipers changed. Some repairs were expensive such as the tranny and a radiator. The replacements were acceptable, the cheapest, most dependable ones we could find. The labor to replace and install was extremely reasonable and fair. The staff always polite, courteous but most of all, they take their time explaining the " big fix" you need to get the job done and done fast. And that's why they get my five star rating. I live right down the street from Berkeley Auto Care, and I pass it just about everyday on my way to work. I took my car in earlier this week for an oil change, since it's been quite some time since I've taken it in to get serviced. They finished my oil change way ahead of when I needed it back by. They recommended some belt replacements and my valve gasket to be changed (leaking a lot of oil). My car has been acting a little funny while idling and sometimes the engine would cut out completely. Haven't had a problem since! Ricky is super friendly too. I didn't catch the other guy's name, but he was nice too. Definitely recommending them to my friends. read more

Took our car to them for cooling problem, after inspecting engine was told need new rebuilt engine for $3600, or repair head gasket for $3200 (including $700 to resurface one cylinder head), or $1300 to replace oil cooler.. I wonder which one and why so much $$. I say no thanks. They say O.K. and charged $96.00 (yes $96.00) to change engine oil and release car. I take the car to other service shop, get car properly repaired (oil cooler) total price including new factory parts and all labor, $475.00 Total Must have had "SUCKER" stamped on forehead. If you have more $$$ than you know what to do with, go see this "community" of mechanics. If not, BEWARE. They are out to get your $$$$$$$$$$$. :-( read more

I'm a mechanic by trade but I don't have the time or space to do any serious work on my own cars at my current job. Normally I would take it to my friends shop in Fremont but I had been hearing such good things from BAC's customer's that I decided to let them put upgraded suspension on my 350Z. You should understand that I drive the **** out of this car and if the mechanic left something loose very bad things would happen. The people are very friendly and efficient. They took very good care of my car and I, giving me a student discount (every time for oil changes) and showing and explaining what was wrong before they fix it which is very important to me since I have been taken advantage of before by mechanics. The manager/owner, Ricky, was very nice and even kept my car for a WEEK when I went on a trip and couldn't pick my car up on time AND wash and vacuumed it for no extra cost. He took very good care of me and were understanding and knowledgeable as well as quick and hassle free. I would definitely recommend them to anyone I know, especially if they are a student at Cal. I've been here 3 times within the past year for various reasons (light changes to belt changes, etc), and I've always left really satisfied. I dropped by on a Friday afternoon for a price quote for a belt change, and though they were really busy, Ricky took the time out to look at my car and explain to me what needed to be done etc. I didn't feel rushed, and I definitely felt he gave me and my car all of his attention. which I think is pretty rare these days. They don't try to hassle you to purchases parts or services, but rather they'll give you the real low-down of what's happening with your car, what needs to be done, and what you should keep an eye out for. Most auto shops were over charging especially the one down the street on Dwight and Shattuck but they seemed to actually care. I needed a new clutch on my 04 Accord. I had called nearly 15 shops around the area, hunting for the best price. I knew this job was quite extensive and was going to be costly but I was prepared to spend for my beloved Accord. BAC was the last shop on my list and their quote was by far the best. Ricky and his team were able to look at the vehicle the following day and come to find out, it was not only the clutch that needed changing. In short, the cost of the repairs needed amounted to more than the value of the car - a car that was already nearing 205k miles. Ricky was honest about his findings by suggesting that the car might not be worth the repairs - a suggestion that might have meant his shop would not get the money for the clutch job. In the end, I decided against having the work done. Ricky was very patient through out our entire interaction, one that spanned over a week's time and involved a lot of back and fourth over the phone. He was understanding about my decision even though it essentially, brought him nothing. These types of experience are what keeps loyal customers. While I did not get work done on my Accord, I will be bringing in my second car soon to have Ricky look at and will more than likely, proceed with the repairs. For one, i don't usually write reviews but this place just deserves one. On the fateful day I planned to see a doctor about my unceasing stomach cramps, my usually trusty bmw refused to start for no particular reason. I believe murphy's law was in full sickass motion that horrible afternoon. but I digress. AAA only went as far as a jumpstart, so a good friend brought me here to check my car out. i ended up getting more than the basics fixed, just because Ricky & co seemed very honest and nice; not to mention, reasonably priced :) and this is what I got fixed: 1. alternator + alternator belt replaced 2. windshield washer pump & strainer replaced 3. P/S pulley replaced 4. rear door wood molding plugs replaced (some embellishment was falling off) labor and parts all rounded off to 700, and I know full well Ricky did not overcharge me for labor. that's what i really like about this place. they give you a clearcut quote, stick with it, and throw in great service. they did a complimentary vacuum for my interior too! right now, just waiting to see how the repairs hold up. for now, I highly recommend this place! read more

Quality work, Reasonable price. Ricky and co. are the best i've seen so far. They do an honest evaluation, honest job, and don't overcharge for labor like some other places do. if you need a simple oil change, ask Ricky to do a general check of the condition of the other parts of the car while they are at it. (it usually costs 85 bucks just to run the initial evaluation on the car.) i bought a used 95 subaru off a private seller just this sept. due to the age of the car, and also the lack of history, when i brought my car for its first oil change, i asked him to give it a look over. turns out i needed new rear brakes and rotors, and a new front wheel axle cos mine was cracked. repairs cost 450 straight up. parts, labor, taxes, etc included. he waived the 85 dollar evaluation fee for me. and threw in some discounts. u cant find a better deal than this. im highly recommending this place cos its top quality, top service, yet reasonably priced. ive been referring my frens since. and they get discounts too from my referral. mention my name, and u probably will too. =) read more

They had great service and were very professional. I drove up from Santa Cruz to downtown Berkeley for a conference, and realized my brakes were failing at a stop light. I was late to the conference and was worrying all day while in meetings. I was finally able to bring my car in after yelping and decided to try Berkeley Auto Care since it was the closest shop. Cesar checked out my brake issued and determined that I needed a new master cylinder. They kept my car over night since I couldn't drive it, and they had my car ready by noon the next day. Ricky was so kind to drive me back to my hotel, and picked my up the next day also. He was very professional, and showed me the broken master cylinder after it was taken out. I have been going to Berkeley Auto Care for around 3 years now, and have consistently been impressed with the service I receive from Ricky (the owner) and his employees. They always make time to fit me into their busy schedule, even the same day as I call. Additionally, Ricky and his staff are both extremely knowledgeable and honest. I have never felt like they were trying to take advantage of me (a woman who admittedly knows nothing about cars), or hustle me into making unnecessary repairs. It seems like the Berkeley Auto Care ratings are getting better. Maybe this means that they read their ratings and make adjustments based on bad ones. I hope so! I notice a lot of people were saying that they try to push unnecessary repair/maintenance as a con, but they didn't do that to me. Though I did have a bad experience. I went to this place because a friend of mine really likes them. I am very frustrated at being lied to by any mechanic I go to and I try to do it myself or get friends to help when possible. But I thought I'd give this place a try. I needed a new muffler/exhaust system. I told them that and they replaced it, without telling me I needed anything else. When I got there in the morning, the person working gave me the paperwork for diagnosis. The fee for diagnosis is $99, and they would wave it if I decided to have the work done by them, he told me. I signed the paperwork and left, getting a call a little while later by someone else, who was going to do the work if I gave him my consent, who gave me a price. "Is that minus the $99 diagnosis fee?" I asked. "Yeah, $429 out the door, I'll try to have it done by 7," he said, kind of quickly, like he didn't have time for any questions. I was at a cafe, waiting for the work to be done, when I got a call telling me that it's done and they're closing in 20 minutes so I need to pick my van up right away. I explained that I was told it would be done around 7, and I wasn't that close and didn't know if I could make it in 20 minutes. They close at 6, so this was an hour early than I'd expected. I ended up making it. I looked at the receipt before I paid, and it included the $99 diagnosis fee. It seemed like the person who called had answered my question about it., but he probably had not been listening, because now I was being told, by a different guy, that I hadn't mentioned the fee waver on the phone. In the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening, it was always someone different that was there or talking to me. The last guy told me that the first guy may have said that to me, but he hadn't made a note. He tried to call him but he didn't answer. In the end we compromised and I got $49 taken off. I was told that they would get a hold of me once the first guy was reachable and could say whether or not he had told me I could have that discount. The next day I got a call saying that he couldn't remember if he'd told me that. Best case scenario: These people are very poor communicators. Worst case scenario: These people are hella shady. read more

Although the advertised price of an oil change is cheap (~$30), they added an extra fee for a regular Ford sedan (a few dollars) and then added more to top up fluids ($10), which they failed to do (my windshield wiper fluid was empty and remains so). Conveniently, one of my headlights went out while they were working on my car, but I chose to replace that myself (they asked for about $25). read more
