I would have to agree with reviews here. I came here for an oil change, everyone was friendly and service was quick. I paid around $24 for the oil change and he replaced my air filter for another $20. I dropped off the car, went to eat lunch, came back 45 minutes later and it was all done. Being a student, it was really convenient to take my car in on a Saturday. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for an auto repair shop. read more

Friday afternoon, my car doesn't start, concluded that the battery had finally kicked the bucket. Gave Berkeley Auto Care a call an hour before they closed, and they told me to come over to have it replaced. I was in and out in less then 30 minutes, and the price was very very reasonable, not to mention they take Visa, and are extremely friendly. I took my car to Berkeley Auto Care a couple months back to get my breaks and rotors replaced and couldn't be happier with the service I received! Robert went over the model breaks to show me how worn my breaks were and then showed me the actual breaks and rotors that they replaced on my 2003 Toyota Corolla. He took the time to explain why the condition they were in made it necessary to replace them, how the repairs were made, and where they are located on the car so that I know how to prevent damaging my rotors in the future. Accidentally, I left my to-do list at the shop so without me asking for it, Robert texted a picture of my list to me so that I wouldn't have to go back there to pick it up. I will definitely be coming back here for all my car issues! Today, I took my car back to the shop because the front part of my car was making a weird noise. I left my car there for them to do a diagnostic and Ricky called me back an hour later to let me know that my left front wheel bearing needs to be replaced. I asked a million questions (as I always do because I'm a skeptic) and Ricky took the time to explain everything to me. Ricky even offered a discount if I ended up needing to get the right wheel bearing replaced as well. He agreed to take care of it by the end of the day today and made other accommodations to ensure my happiness and satisfaction with the services that his shop provides. I brought my car here years ago, after it over heated on the freeway. (Just wanted to make sure it wasn't too damaged.) The mechanic told me that the entire engine block had melted and fused together and that the car was essentially worthless... then he offered to buy the car off me for $300, saying he'd just use it for scrap parts. I ended up driving it home right then and there and it's still driving just fine (5 years later)... the guy basically lied to me and tried to cheat me out of my car. Update My battery died. Though it was within warranty but didn't have the receipt. Ricky replaced it even when he couldn't find the records in his system. so yeah, he made up for the last time. My first review on yelp and hate it to be negative. But Dear Ricky / Cesar you leave me no choice. Took my 92 Saturn to them and got the timing belt and the alternator replaced. Total bill $655 of which Cesar graciously took off $105 handing me a bill of $550. The Pluses - Very quick turn around. Good service. Polite and friendly people. The minuses - You feel getting ripped off. The belt tensioner is avbl on the net for around $70 and the alternator for around $120. They sold it to me for a grand total of $380 (150 for tensioner and 230 for the alternator)!! Assuming some markup for them carrying inventory and the convenience, but a nearly 100% increase seems a bit much. Considering it took them 2.5 hours (@ $99 an hour) to get the car ready, feel I paid at least 120 bucks more. Words cannot express the way that I feel about Berkeley Auto Care! I recently wrote a review about my friends at Berkeley Auto Care. I had to have my transmission rebuilt, and Ricky and Cesar took care of me. Now....I have to get the water pump on my 2004 Dodge Durango replaced. After giving birth to twin boys a year ago, money has been funny. After getting the quote from Cesar last week I have been trying to figure out how I was going to pay for service. After talking with Ricky and explaining my situation he worked out a plan for me and went ahead with the repairs on my car. I was so pleased I could kiss Ricky right on the spot, but I didn't!!!! His wife and my husband probably wouldn't like that.....but its all good. I love them for understanding and working with me. I am a long time customer, and plan on being one for a long time. I went in several months ago to have my windshield wipers fixed and when they malfunctioned a month or 2 ago they were nice enough to replace them for free. ( Who does that anymore these days?!). I just went in again because they weren't working right again. This time the man changed The whole arm on both of them again at no charge! I hate leaving negative reviews. I really do. Especially if they are small businesses, probably struggling to survive. But Berkeley Auto Care is the first auto shop that has ever tried to claim that I need a very expensive repair that (it turns out) I did not need at all. I had never been to Berkeley Auto Care before; only went there because I saw the deal on an inexpensive oil change. After the oil change, they said I needed a new timing belt costing ~$600. I was suspicious, so I then took my car to my regular auto shop for a second opinion. Well, my regular auto shop had replaced my timing belt less than one year ago, and it's just fine! They were furious that Berkeley Auto Care had tried to jip me for such an expensive and unnecessary repair. It looks like there has been a string of negative reviews in the past 2-3 months. I'd guess that Berkeley Auto Care has just gotten desperate in this economy? Too sad. Next time I'll just stick with my regular auto shop. read more

While this company may be fine for simple items - such as tire work or a brake job, they completely botched replacing the leaking heater core on my car. I've been working on vehicles for roughly 30 years and I know what I'm doing, but just didn't have the garage to do this job myself, so I brought it there. The initial quote came in at about 15% less than the dealer..and since they are convenient to where I lieve, I gave them the go-ahead...big mistake. They returned the car to me late the next day...no phone calls despite me asking them to keep me advised...the heat was barely working, I discovered several pieces of the dash that they had removed in the back seat (nuts, bolts and a steering column member) that hadn't been properly reassembled.......and GET THIS...the car's electrical system wasn't charging when they returned it to me. They said that it was a broken alternator..and that I KNEW that it was broken when I brought it in...and tried to pin the blame on them. Incredible....but read on. So, they just jump started the car and told me it was done...even though the car could only make it a few miles running on the battery alone. Furthermore, they tried add $100+ for recharging the air-conditioning system - which they claimed was a necessary part of the job of replacing the heater core...but I looked and showed them that no work had been done on the A/C - so they took that off the bill. Bottom line - didn't really fix the problem I brought the car in for, they also returned it barely drivable...and didn't put the car back together correctly....and wouldn't accept responsilbity for the situation. I eventually fixed all the problem they created. Turns out the problem they claimed was a broken alternator...was actually due to a connector under the dash that they disconnected but failed to reconnect. Turns out the reason the heater was barely producing any heat is thaty didn't bleed the heater system - which gets a air bubble in the heater core. And, as for the pieces they forgot to reinstall, I had to remove the dash and replace those - which took hours of time. In order to get my car back I had to pay them, but I later considered suing them in small claims court. Rather than deal with the hassle of that, they agreed to give me $100 back on what they charged me, but that came nowhere near the extra time and expense that I incurred. Very unprofessional A real nightmare... Stay away. read more

It annoys me that there are so many shady mechanics out there. Today I went to Berkeley Auto Care to get my car checked out because the engine light was on. He did a diagnostic of it and threw a bunch of codes at me...one of which I knew. Mechanic: It's a code P0440 Evap Emission Control Me: Um, that could mean anything. It could just be that the gas cap is loose. Mechanic...(moment of pause followed by rapid jargon and extortionist prices) Me: Okay, whatever. I'll just take my chances (and a second opinion). He told me I needed a tune-up / a new spark plug (although I JUST had one 3 months ago and normally they last you like 60,000 miles). He also insisted that my battery was low, although later I went to two different mechanics (one from Midas Touch and the other from Pep Boys) and they both told me that my battery was completely fine and more than 75% charged. This guy is really friendly, and the staff is nice. Also it's common practice for mechanics to be shady like this (hey everybody's gotta eat!). Still, it's important for people to know what they're getting into when they go here. read more

I rarely write reviews on Yelp but feel the need to warn others. I've been going to this shop in the past for oil change and always do the conventional oil change for ~$40. Today I went into the shop for the usual oil change and signed the work order (showing ~$40) assuming it's the usual conventional oil change. When I returned to pickup the car, they asked me to sign a new work order again, which to my surprise had additional ~$20 fee and it's for synthetic oil, costing total of $70. I felt cheated as the original work order I signed didn't show the ~$20 fee and they never asked me if I would like to upgrade to synthetic oil change beforehand. This is not a big deal as a standalone incident, but it does show their lack of honesty & integrity which is critical when dealing with more serious repair work e.g. brake, engine, etc. read more

The overall cost was resonable and I didn't feel taken advantage of. *Update- turns out my full price repair was no repair at all! After leaving with a seemingly awesome experience, my elation was deflated when shown (during an oil change) that the repair I paid for was actually not fixed at all. Ricky's fit me in and said the part they used was dysfunctional. Nice for them to figure that out after making me pay full price! They did a second repair but it's hard to believe in the integrity of their work. Worth a downgrade in rating and not going back. read more

This is a follow-up to my previous review. Another couple weeks and another clunking noise shows up. I find another loose nut. I tighten it down, and notice that the two front struts (both of which they replaced, at the same time) are different colors - one is black and solid, the other is silver, with a couple of holes in it. I thought this a bit weird, so I took it in to ask them about it. They wouldn't go look at it (even though it is easy to see, just pop the hood). They just said, "Yeah, that is okay - we can use different brand struts, as long as they meet the spec." Sorry, I want my mechanics to be a bit more detail-oriented than that. I would give them one star, but I save that for places like Bank of America. read more

This place was alright. It definitely was one of those garages that try to tell you that your car has eight different things wrong with it even if you go in just for a regular maintenance. The place was also very bad at communicating with me. After they found out what happened with my car, I had to call them and then walk over to find out what was wrong with it. If this place wasn't so close to my apartment, i probably wouldn't go in the future. Things this shop has done for me in the past: -Oil Changes -15k and 45 Service -Lots of tire swapping (summer and winter all seasons tires) -Alignment -Balancing Ricky knows me by name now and I do not hesitate to come back for my service. Add another to the line of recent low ratings for Berkeley Auto Care, guys, because here's mine: I went in for a 90K maintenance check and Ricky just forgot to tell me he was done with my car. He also refused to give me a detailed outline of all the charges, which is against the law, by the way!! But Ricky is a charmer, and I'm a nice person, so I let that slide because the whole package was only gonna cost me $300 instead of the Edmunds $400 estimate. They get 3 stars because I had to call Ricky 5 hours after dropping off the car to ask about its status when it was done 3 hours earlier. What the heck, Ricky? Also, I realized that they didn't check the extra liquids (power steering liquid and brake fluid) that I asked about because I had to replace them myself a week later when I noticed them during my biweekly engine check. read more

On my first visit to Berkeley Auto Care, my truck was overheating, I was freaking out, and one of their guys came out and helped me right away. It was a quick fix and he didn't charge me! So, of course I came back when I needed a bigger service. My truck wouldn't pass smog and they were very professional in their diagnosis an work.
