I love this place! This is the ultimate hardware store that also offers gourmet coffee, a whole section of specialty stationery in another building, fine china & crystal... it has so much more to offer than just hammers and plumbing supplies! This is the original Bering's location and I have been coming here since I was a child. My father and I would make trips on a Saturday, just Dad and his little girl... it was such a treat for me because I always got a bag of the freshest yummy gummi bears (yes, they sell candy over in the coffee section) while I spent a day with Dad. There is so much in this store! My father would *always* end up back at this store after looking all over town for whatever item he needed and sure enough, Bering's always had that obscure tool or hardware piece he needed. You can also tell that they take pride in their store (always have and still do). Employees work certain sections and know their section well. They offer help with a smile and are knowledgeable. If you go, be sure not to miss the upscale high-end gift store in the back of the store where you can buy the latest Baccarat piece or fine china. At Christmas wander back there for a gorgeous spectacle of adorned trees with the most beautiful glass ornaments. Also near the gift store is the gourmet coffee - you can smell the aroma as you get close. Get some gummi bears when you are there and think of me. :) And last but not least, head across the parking lot to the free-standing building in the back and check out the huge selection of specialty stationery. I used to really like the back building. The temporary or added on building, that is. You have to walk outside to get to it, which was always a bit awkward, but it made sense and used to be chockablock full of stationary. Well, the front half did, then the back half had roofing and roof ornaments. (Weather vanes and such.) That was twenty or so years ago, today it's a bit old carpet and dusty. Oh, you can find stationary and such, but nothing of a selection as was to be found in the late 80s. Not much in the way of moderately-priced gifts. I now feel like I am wading through Ms Havesham's library closet when I'm here. The main store is nice. (I think that falls a step behind wonderful, but that really was the best I could manage.) Nice. If you need that odd, "I have no idea what I need for that" item, you should head here. They have it, whatever that thingamajig is. Oh, they stopped making "x" years ago? Stop here, if they don't have it, they'll either have a solution or the replacement item for which your object was phased out. You may want to also check Southland and Buffalo Hardware, but this Bering's location is most likely going to be your best bet. Beyond hardware and tools (not referring to the jerks that frequent bars on Washington Ave.), they also carry pet supplies, house and kitchen wares, bake ware, and yard supplies. Need hostess gifts? They have quite an assortment. From cheese trays, to outdoor glasses and plates, to coffees and bulk candies, and on into the nicer gift room. Need wedding, holiday, birthday, or graduation presents? Step into the "fancy room." (I have been shopping at Berings since I was exceptionally short, so forgive my room nicknames.) A friend of mine was registered here a few years ago, and smart she was, they have really nice China, glass, and silverware. They tend to stock the tried and true brands such as Trapp and Crabtree and Evelyn, but the selection is nice. Yes, that word again. read more

This is the cutest hardware store! And I am definitely not there for the hardware. They sell so many different kinds of items from German nutcrackers and pet food to gourmet coffee and all kinds of kitchen gadgets. This is one of the few places in the city that sells Candidae dog food. And that is my number one reason for going. I have also bought some of their gourmet coffee which, I hear, is very good. I bought it as a gift for christmas and they loved it. The staff is also absolutely GREAT! Very kind people. And yesterday when I went to buy the very expensive dog food, the cashier applied a 20% coupon for me without any kind of solicitation from me. Absolutely wonderful customer service! I will go back again and again. Maybe next time, I'll allow myself to indulge in some of their very tempting candy and chocolate selection. read more

Came in on last day of BlackFriday sale and I was shopping in the beautiful gift section. i was helped right away by a fantastic employee, who happened to be a buyer for the store too. I picked out two pretty vases that were on display but wrapped and covered up tightly in a box when purchased. Rather than have the recipients unwrap all that on Christmas I decided to take a picture of the display vase to include with the gift. I had left my phone in the car but the employee suggested she take a picture with her cell and text it to me! She was so helpful and pleasant, as are all the people that work there! I even ordered something on line when I got home and of course messed that order up. I called the store right away and talked to another nice person who cleared it up immediately! If you live in Houston stop in to Bering's to see what they have. Bering's carries so many different things I don't think I can even list half of the specialty products they carry so just have a look. Are you looking for a charcoal grill? They have demonstrations daily(?) of different grills and techniques. On the day I stopped in they happened to have the "Big Green Egg" on demo and some tasty chicken from the grill. I was sold on the egg in minutes. I also had gone during their annual 20% sale that they send through the mail which made the sale that much more attractive. So many niche products, so little money. read more

I came in to Bering's for the first time and was very excited. I walked into the store and immediately saw some amazing and quirky things. I saw there was a chocolate counter so my husband and I went to buy some. The attendant an older man was at the computer not saying a greeting or noticing we were there. Then my husband spoke up and the man turned as I was choosing I squatted down as I was asking for my item to see the name and the older man yelled "what did you say?!" I repeated myself and then took my things and left. No one asked if we need assistance. The only kind person was the front cashier lady. It's sad because I was very excited to go but now I will not be returning. I can find same beautiful items at Sue-La-Table and various other stores. read more

I went to the Bering's on Weslayan and my experience was awful. I was so excited to go there being my first time and no we were not greeted but I was excited anyways. Went to the coffee shop because a friend if mine told me it was great. I went there and the lady was not pleasant. Looked like she did not want to be there. I asked her for the special coffee and she said they were out. It was not closing time and she could of grounded me some since I was a new customer, she even said that it was the number one seller. If it was so high in demand then why did they not have enough to sell. If I was a manager, I would of checked to make sure that there was plenty for my customers especially if it was in high demand like she said. Anyway, I walked away and ordered something else and I was not happy. She didn't even help with a suggestion. But it's okay. I did notice that when was leaving she was selling the coffee I wanted to someone else.... I was astonished. But I did feel like they only cater to certain people. While I was there I did notice them looking at us but they did not offer to help us. I guess they were thinking we might take something. I will never go back to that store again. Never. read more

I have gone to Berings my whole life and alwayd thought thry had good products and service.Last Friday I called them and ordered eight bundles of wood to b r delivered to the house.The man arrived around four in the afternoon and stacked the bundles in the garage After he left I opened one and the bark on the outside of the wood came off in my hand anf it was a piece of wood that looked like a ceiling beam and they had disguised it be putting tree bark over it.All the bundles were like this.After the freeze I took the ceiling beam and the piece of bark up to Bering and the man said that was the way they packagr their wood and did not offer to reimburse me .When you order fire wood it is with the expectation that you are getting logs not ceiling beams read more

Although I really like browsing through the store here, it is much much much too expensive. You can buy the same products and gifts online for much much cheaper. The store really caters to older people who don't know that you can buy things online cheaper, or the Tanglewood crowd that pops in and has been coming here forever. They have expanded to another building behind them and carry a ton of gifts, furniture, garden things, and stationary and childrens clothes. We ordered my bachelorette party invites from here, and they turned out beautifully. I easily could have ordered them online for cheaper, but my friend insisted. I also pop in every now and then when I need a gift, or cute stationary, but the prices don't justify the convenience. Cute store for browsing. read more

Love their customer service, truly hands on. They are a little more expensive than home depot but are totally helpful. We were looking at trying to find something to fill some gouges in our wood floring and they were super helpful. It's a super cut store too with stuff to register for like china and then chocolates. Note a chocolate bon-bon is 2.99 each. They also sell coffee and it makes the stores smell delicious. read more

There are no hardware stores like Berings. They always have what you need and someone who can show you exactly where it is located in the store. They have hard-to-find items as well as gifts, coffee, linens, candles, chimes and outdoor decorative items as well as all of the usual outdoor items, grills, etc. I lived in The Woodlands for 30 years and would always drive in to Berings to find what I needed, now I live in Spring and will continue to drive in to Berings, their service and selection are the best anywhere. read more

This is one of those places that has been awhile for awhile. It was my grandmother's go to hardware store for a good chuck of her life in Houston. If you are looking for something a bit hard to find or if you need assistance with something, then this is a good place to stop by. They are a bit on the high price side though, so I don't think I would make it my go to store for more basic hardware items. I was impressed with their cooking and kitchen selection. It had lots of items and they are all easy to find since unlike Bed and Bath this place isn't that big. My dad is a fan of their coffee, and that is why I went on my most recent visit. They will blend any flavors you want in the back. Overall, it has a family business vibe, that isn't often found in places like this anymore. read more

Oh how I love Bering's...more for "window shopping" than for my home staples. It's a little out of my budget...or what I find reasonable for every day items but I buy specialty items there all the time. They have a granite cleaner that I like - it's made locally. I also have really cute personalized stationary that a friend gave me from Berings. What I really love is walking around and just looking - and the staff is really friendly. I also like the old rich people that are in there - I can't believe they buy like all their household stuff there. It's cute to me though - endearing... This Bering's location has the most unreliable customer service. After multiple frustrating incidents and the lack of help from this location's customer service, I feel the need to write a review. I chose to have my wedding registry at Bering's and participated at this location. See several issues below: #1: My aunt ordered two Waterford crystal glasses off my registry. The wrong style of Waterford glasses were delivered to me. A minor misunderstanding if it had happened only once. #2: I ordered a set of fine china off of my wedding registry for myself after my wedding. Bering's Westheimer called to tell me once it had come in. I picked up and took the gift wrapped box home, to only then realize they had given me the wrong set of china. I had to drive back to the store to get a new one and nicely informed them this was the second time now this had happened. This location is not convenient for me to get to either. #3: On a separate occasion, Bering's Westheimer had called to tell me that a set of my sterling silverware had come in. I picked it up and took it home only to realize that it was not the right set. It's my mistake at this point for not checking before I left, until I received the rude service upon driving all the way back to the store once again. The woman I dealt with proceeded to tell me I was wrong and that the set was the right one. After an argument, someone else finally came to help and agreed they sent me the wrong set, AGAIN. Eventually, my correct set was provided. #4**: The last straw with Bering's on Westheimer. I ordered another set of my sterling silverware in store a few months later and requested my 20% bridal registry discount as usual. I was told for the very FIRST time that Bering's does not provide the discount on this brand of silver, even after already having purchased this. Since the day I created this registry in store, until now, 6 months after my wedding, not one person ever told me the discount would not apply to this one specific brand. In fact, even more frustrating, is that I had been under the impression that I had received the discount on my previous purchase. I requested the woman helping me to pull my previous order form. -First the woman spent 15 minutes trying to tell me that I had previously purchased 2 sets of silver when I had only purchased one. After correcting her, she then suggested that I go home and check, as if I were making it up. She eventually agreed I was correct. -**She pulled my previous order form for one set of silverware which showed a line item on the receipt for the 20% discount. However, after doing the math I saw that it had never actually been applied. This was completely deceiving. The receipt lists that the discount is applied even though it was never actually applied, leaving me to believe I received the discount when I hadn't. I told Berings Westheimer how misleading this was and how I expected to receive the discount for my purchase that day. The store manager would not grant it. My overall experience here has been a disaster. While the merchandise is high quality, I would never recommend that any bride register here. It was more headache than it's worth. The fact that Bering's was unapologetic and did not grant me that discount was the final straw. They clearly did not value my business, even after how much I had bought there. Not to mention, apparently you have to double check the math on your receipts before you charge your credit card there. They might be lying to you. read more

I love to go to this store to browse, but it is more expensive than most of the competition. I will love to say that it is because of the service, but it is not true. Sometimes the employees are very nice, sometimes they are not. It all depends on how you are dressed that day. If you look upper class, you are very welcome, but if by any chance you go dressed like a worker, do not expect any help. Also, this store and most of the employees are not very fond of kids, so if you must attend to the store, do so while your children are someplace else. It is ironic since they do have a kids department, but kids seem to bother most of the employees, which are older. As for the Weslayan/Bissonet store, there are some wonderful employees. However, I can not say the same about the uneducated rude manager. I have to say I feel very sorry for the employees that work under that manager. Bottomline, this is a store where they like the average customer to be over 50 years old, and it does show on the way they treat their customer. I think I am going to wait a few years before I set foot there again. read more

I ordered an item that they didn't have in stock at the store. I was told it would take about two weeks to come in. After two weeks I wanted to know the status of the item I had already purchased. What bothered me was no one reached out to me to tell me there was a delay. I had to call twice to find out what was going on. The item finally came in just shy of a month. I have been shopping at Bering's my whole life and I have watched and enjoyed their amazing growth and metamorphosis into a Houston version of Gump's...You can buy anything you want in the way of hardware or household anything. The standard quality of their inventory is always going to err on the side of better or best; their prices are higher than Home Depot or Lowes but their service is better and they usually have discount coupons available. If you did not receive a coupon by mail, just ask an employee if there is one and if there is, they have always given it to me, right then and there; they actually help you save, what a concept!! For your basic no frills hardware needs, perhaps one of the big box builder supply stores would be more economical but for help and the hard to find or outstanding gifts and quality BERING'S in it!!!! read more

Customer service is seriously lacking at the Bering's location on Westheimer. I purchased two birthday gifts the week before Christmas and wanted to have them gift wrapped but they were too busy at the time. Since the birthdays were not until January, I returned to the store on Jan 2nd with the items and paid for gift wrap at the front register. After I paid for the wrap, I was then asked if I had my receipt with me and I did not. The gifts still had the original Bering's stickers on them with the bar codes and prices so they could see that they had been purchased there. I was then told that although there was evidence that the items were purchased at Berings that I would still need my original receipt to have them gift wrapped. Period. There was absolutely no negotation or accommodation made for a customer who has been shopping there for 29 years! None! I do not understand why someone who is in the customer service business would do this. It is not the same store. Do not shop there! read more

I've shopped at Berings (Weslayan) for many years. It seems lately, however, the staff is not as helpful as they used to be. Today my husband and I were looking at flags with a sales assistant. My husband turned to me and asked me a question about the item, I got about mid-sentence and the sales assistant cut me off and began talking to my husband again like I did not exist. Last March, I ordered some custom-printed invitations from the print/stationery department. They told me they would be ready to proof on a certain day (I had the date in writing). That day I called them and they were not ready. Then, there were many mistakes on my proof including a misspelling of my own name! These are just a couple of examples from the last few years, but there have been other incidents. I find the sales staff in general to be "snooty". I'm pretty sure I will not shop there again -- too expensive anyway. Rather go to Walmart! read more
