Called Bentley four times to make reservations for dinner. we have not been there in quite a while because of the food quality and the service. We thought we would give it another try. After attempted phone calls and voice messages somebody from the hotel finally called. we had already made arrangements at another local restaurant. If I'm the owner, General manager, or head hostess, I would make sure my phone is answered during business hours. All of our phone calls were between four and 5 o'clock in the evening, which you would think somebody would answer the phone but you just get a voicemail. We left several messages and never received a return call. If you can't answer your phone, how good is the quality of your food or your service? read more

It was challenging to find a special occasion restaurant in downtown Salem open on a Sunday evening. This is further complicated by a few limitations on cuisine based on my fellow diners and one of our top choices is currently under renovation. But, we were still excited to celebrate an anniversary at Bentley's Grill. All started out well with an Open Table reservation online and our party was greeted and seated right away. Beautiful glass etchings in the lobby of The Grand Hotel and restaurant entrance lifted our spirits. Sadly, the food and service were only mediocre. Regarding the ambiance, we were seated in one of the main dining areas by the fire pit across from the impressive bar and close to the kitchen. During our meal two servers dropped plates and no mention was made of our special occasion by the server even though it was noted when making the reservation and I also mentioned it to her when we were seated. I'm not expecting any freebies, but an acknowledgement would have been nice. Our group ordered starters (soup or salad) and entrees. Adults all had cocktails. The soup special was French Onion and it was not prepared well. Warm, not hot, and the cheese wasn't melted on the top. For mains, our group ordered a mix of steaks, seafood, and pasta dishes. Perfectly fine, but not memorable. I wouldn't recommend Bentley's Grill for dining, but would return to give Happy Hour at the bar a try. read more

My boss raved about this place but also mentioned this restaurant recently hired a new chef. My boss took back her raves and apologized profusely for taking us here. The bread they serve is inedible giant crutons. We ordered sizzling mushroom appetizer and received a luke warm non sizzling small pan of mushrooms. She ordered the mac n cheese and found she couldnt eat it. I ordered the salmon w hazlenut crap and it was gross. The gravy was the hazlenut and it tasted like coffee. I took 2 bites of the salmon and returned it. The zucchini wasnt seasoned at all. They still charged me for the salmon but they took $2 off. I literally didnt make a noticeable dent on the plate it was practically untouched, merely sampled, and they still charged me. Get the old chef back. read more

Took my husband here for his 70th birthday and it did not disappoint. We sat by the fire in the center of room and enjoyed an incredible meal of salmon, ribeye, brussel sprouts, asparagus and mushrooms. The waitress was super sweet, attentive and efficient. We just came her with a huge group of 20 for my in-laws birthday. The restaurant was great at accommodating our large group in a private room. Service was a bit slow, but it was hard to tell if our server had a full section of tables on top of our group. The food was good as always, but a bit pricey for the quality. read more

OK had never been to this place, firstly because it seemed to pretentious for my tastes and also because of the wildly divergent Yelp reviews. But this Saturday night and girlfriend's friends were down from Portland and were eating at Bentley's. So we went down town. Firstly it is a beautiful space they have created..vey welcoming and still has a PNW vibe about it. Greeters at the doorway were very nice and let us enter to find our friends..no wait. Very relaxed. Sat down with our friends and the server came within a few minutes. We had already eaten so we just ordered drinks and dessert. Nice they have local Santiam Pirate Stout for a OK price. Dessert was fine. I really liked the atmosphere of this place, relaxed but not flabby, Servers were great. I have to give it a 5 stars..i could find nothing wrong tonight at least. read more

Glad we made reservations because even on a Tuesday night, this place is packed!!! Great apps and apps to share. We had the Brussel sprouts with pepperoni which was pretty good. Used to bacon but the pepp did impart good fat to it. Dungeonous crab cocktail was piled high and tasty. We all ended up having specials of the day so tough to review the reg menu. I had the duck and while it had great flavors, i preferred it done a little less like asked. Great wine list and the perfect sized goblets for all the pinot we guzzled. read more

Great place! Ethan and Ryan do a fantastic job making drinks and remembering their customers. The food is always first class. For a "non drinker," I always find myself wanting a drink here. My favorite dish so far was the airline chicken with a curry sauce and mashed potatoes. Unique, delicious and well prepared. I'm staying at The Grand and wanted a little dessert so I ordered a Creme Brulee. Um, what I got was anything but. I wonder if the chef knew this went out like this? They didn't even bother to heat the top and crystallize the sugar. Creme Brulee means burt cream! When I called down to complain that'd closed. If this is the amount of effort they put into a $7 dessert you'd be better off buying the ice cream from the tiny store next to the registration desk. Not cool. read more

Bentley's is one of the few places in Salem that offers an elegant selection of food and drink for Happy Hour in an atmosphere that mirrors this elegance. I've been here on different occasions and have always been delighted. On my last excursion I had a Love Spell Saketini, Dungeness Crab Cake, and the Baked Goat Cheese. I would have never thought of mixing sake and pomegranate juice in a drink but Bentley's managed to create a truly spectacular imbibation with that concoction. The Asian Slaw and Tobiko Aioli matched the crab cake perfectly. And the Goat Cheese, Romesco Sauce, and Crispy Bread were delightful as well. read more

When looking for restaurants in Salem, by and large, most places were 3.5 stars (I usually don't go anywhere that isn't four stars without an additional compelling reason). After a long day of traveling, we opted to eat at Bentley's which turned out to be a most lovely meal. The fireplace is in the center of the restaurant gives it a cozy feel and it definitely has a steakhouse vibe. Drinks were fantastic and the bartender happily obliged when I asked for a filthy dirty martini. Our goat cheese/romesco app was fabulous and amazing. My filet wasn't the best cut of meat I've ever had but it was well prepared and seasoned. The foraged mushrooms were fantastic and I'd be happy with a giant bowl of those all by themselves. Green beans were well prepared and tasty. Their dessert menus come from local bakeries which is a fabulous idea. We didn't have much time in Salem and I did see some bakeries on Yelp that I would have loved to visit but wasn't able to - I was thrilled to see those places represented on the menu. The Milky Way cake is magical. Our server was attentive without being intrusive. Lovely experience and I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again. read more

I just had drinks my two times at Bentley's, no food. My family and I stayed at the Grand while visiting Salem. Both nights, I ended up at Bentley's having some wine. The restaurant is larger than you think it would be, with plenty of seating as well as a pretty large bar. It was comfortable, not overly fancy, but certainly nice. Both nights the bartenders I had were fantastic. I was able to taste a couple of Oregon beers I can't get at home, plus they offered some nice wine suggestions. Bentley's has a good wine by the glass list (I never saw the full wine list) with plenty of options, including a lot of Oregonian wines. I found a favorite and stuck with it both nights. The first night I was drinking with my brother, and when he stopped the bartender gave him a taste of what I was having. Very friendly. Regarding spirits, the bar is large and well appointed. I don't think it's got anything out of the ordinary, but it had a decent whiskey/bourbon selection. Had Tito's vodka as well. The drink prices were a little high, but that's not surprising given that you are in a hotel restaurant downtown. I don't know when they close, but last call on Thursday night was at 10 pm. thought that was a little on the early side, the bar was over halfway full. I had been to Bentley's in the past and found the quality and service inconsistent. Admittedly, it had been a year or two so my wife and I decided to try it again. Although the server, John, was a little slow in taking our appetizer order, once we got our food, the meal progressed at a leisurely pace. If you're in a hurry, don't come for dinner as our meal took almost 2 hours. John was very attentive and the food was very good. We didn't feel rushed and the restaurant ambiance was lively but not loud and overwhelming. We look forward to coming back. read more

The meat there was so good that I wanted to die. The quality of the meat vary. The options were rare, medium rare, medium well, and well done. I didn't know what I wanted to choose, but I always choose medium well. Because it has a sensation that's not too rare, but not too dry. The meat there was perfect. I always have a hard time choosing options when I'm eating at this place. The staff here are well mannered, and really professional in their craft. I was able to get my food in a reasonable time, and it was made to perfection. I didn't have any pictures, but the meat is high quality. Don't hesitate to come to this place, and try out new things. There are a variety of things on the menu, and you will have a hard time deciding what you want because everything is so good. I recommend this place, and you should definitely try it. read more

Love Bentley's! We have had several groups here for events, dinners, and parties. They are always accommodating and have quick with service. The food is excellent. Smoked Mac and cheese smelled good but taste was meh and the dice was thin. My worth the calories to eat. Crab cakes tasted like they were frozen and flash fried. I found myself staying at the Grand hotel and thus ended up here for a wedding after party. The good thing is that drinks and beer are relatively reasonable. On the downside my friends tell me that the mixed drinks are way too strong. One friends gin and tonic was described as a glass of gin with a splash of tonic. At least you can't blame them for being cheap. Food was hit or miss. Sweet potato fries and Korean chicken lettuce wraps weren't bad. But blackened ahi tasted like it had sat around for days. Yuk. I stopped here during a work visit in Salem with some coworkers for a quick meal. Our food took a little longer than expected, which unfortunately crunched our already short lunch time. However, the servers were very attentive and nice. I give them a 5 out of 5 for great service. As other reviewers have mentioned, Bentley's is definitely fancy for a Salem restaurant. I enjoyed looking at the fire pit in the center and the wooden chairs/tables were very aesthetically appealing. My burger was fine, but nothing amazing. It was cooked to my liking and the patty was seasoned well. They also gave a lot of bacon (almost too much though). None of the ingredients tasted particularly high quality even though the menu description made it sound like a true craft burger. This reminded me of a burger I could get at a dive bar in Portland, and I just wasn't particularly wow-ed. The fries were just okay too; a little on the soggy side. We went to Bentley's for the anniversary of our engagement, 35 years ago. I made the reservations through the app, Opentable. (which I did not have, but downloaded) I then ordered flowers to be delivered to the restaurant. The staff at Bentley's had the flowers at our table when they seated us. Our server, Baley, was just perfect. Baley visited with us and made us feel comfortable, without hovering. We had issues with our steaks being cooked like we had ordered, but they took care of it without any questions or making us feel bad. The manager, Meg, brought out my wife's filet mignon after it had been recooked and told her the steak was on them. I have a dairy allergy and Baley made sure I didn't get something with dairy in the cooking process. We each ordered a dessert, which was heavenly. I work in the food/ hospitality industry so when I "go out" to eat ( which is not very often, because I can usually make it better myself at home and are usually disappointed). But that was not the case tonight at Bentleys Salem. The food was delicious... my compliments to Chef. I had a light meal . The sweetness of the balsamic drizzle on the Caesar salad was a perfect blend to the best version of a Caesar salad I've ever had. The steamer clams and olives were superb... The service was above and beyond !! Nicholas was one of the best servers I've ever encountered. He was friendly, professional, engaging, caring, and knowledgeable... he made me feel welcome to be there!! Jeremiah was an exceptional mixologist.. and baseball fan!! , friendly and kind...it was fun to watch his creativity show as he served customers. All employees were friendly and pleasant, working well together. The whole experience was a pleasant joy!!! Relaxed dining. Bar. Good food. Not too noisy. Incredible wait staff. Entrees Bentley burger was tasty. Fries were pretty good. The ham and cheese with Dijon was tasty, but the tomato in it made the bottom a bit soggy. (The top was nice and crunchy). Cheesecake to die for! Blackout cake was a bit dense, and it seems like they used canned whipped cream, but the side of vanilla ice cream was a good pairing with the cake. Creme brulee - my first experience, I liked it very much. FIre pit - nice. Bently's is the restaraunt which provides room service for The Grand Hotel. read more

Have been in twice now since they changed management and got a new head chef, prior to that I would have given it 3 stars, Chef Hansi has really bumped up the game here. We had a great Easter Brunch this last spring and then returned for dinner a few months later. Cocktails were good, had a few shared plates and was really impressed with both the Brussels sprouts and the Wagyu beef. For entrees we both went with seafood/fish, I had the mahi mahi with pineapple and mango that was a special on the menu and it was like a Hawaiian luau on my taste buds. GF got the scallops and the were perfectly cooked as well. Great wince selection and even have a few flights, I did the Pinot flight with 3 Oregon wines that were all very tasty. Flour-less dark chocolate cake was the perfect meal-ender. Only reason for one star is the space itself, super cavernous and not really intimate with odd mix of deco fixtures and a cozy center-placed fireplace but industrial architecture. Maybe bringing in a good restaurant design consultant would help to make it seem less cafeteria like and more in tune with the fine dining experience the food delivers. Still not a reason to keep us from returning and/or bringing out of town visitors for an amazing meal. read more

What an absolute disappointment. My wife and I were married on Christmas Eve, 37 years ago and have enjoyed celebrating our anniversary at Bentley's Grill the last few years. We ate very sparingly that day looking forward to our special evening. I had read that there was a major turnover of staff with a new chef bringing in some different recipes, but that the old standards would not be changed. We had a 6:30 PM reservation and arrived a few minutes early. We were seated almost immediately and given menus by the waitress telling us she would be back in a few minutes to take our drink orders. It was a good five minutes later that she finally got back to us, quickly took our drink orders and disappeared without saying anything else. At least another five minutes went by before she came back with our drinks and just as quickly is gone again. (It turns out she had a large table of 14 taking her time from us) In the meantime, we had no bread, so I had to ask for it. She returned in a few moments, left it on a table on a plate and again disappeared. The bread was chilled in the center and inedible. My wife caught her eye to call her over and we asked about it. It turns out that the waitresses are supposed to warm the bread and put it in a basket. Finally, we get our orders in with my wife having a salad, my daughter (visiting us from Los Angeles) having the fresh tuna hors-d'oeuvre and I ordered the crabcakes (I had them on my last visit and seriously thought about just having a few extra for my dinner). For some reason, she said that she would bring out the salad and tuna and then later the crabcakes. I thought I had misheard, but let it go. Sure enough, the two items came out first (the tuna was quite good) and I had to wait for the crabcakes. When the crab finally arrived it was these two balls of bread crusted, crab flavored mush that seem to have been deep-fried. However, by this time I was starving and my daughter and I just quickly consumed the portion. Then, we waited, and waited for our food. By 7:45 PM, my back was getting sore from sitting so long (a common problem for me), so I started to walk around. I then noticed that the restaurant had only a very few tables that still had patrons so I called to speak to the manager. I told her how long we had been waiting and that the crabcakes were nowhere near the same quality. Anyone who has had Bentley's crabcakes knows that they are nice sized, panfried patties, and NOT bread crusted balls. She had the audacity to tell me that they were the same recipe. It turns out that our food was ordered 53 minutes earlier and she had no idea why it was not yet on our table. My daughter got the ribeye steak, my wife the filet mignon and I ordered scallops. So, let's talk about the food. The ribeye was not served hot, but let's give them the benefit of doubt and say that the meat was resting. However, it was the toughest ribeye I have ever seen. Difficult to cut through and even more difficult to chew. The filet was so cold that the butter on the top refused to melt. I tried a bite and although it was very tender, it had virtually no texture and even less flavor. The scallops were four little chewy pucks about 1/2 inch in thickness, difficult to cut and even more difficult to chew. Last time they were five, 1 inch thick beautiful scallops, nicely seared and flavorful. What a mess! We cannot tell you how disappointed we are that we will never return to our favorite place to celebrate our anniversary. read more

The food menu selection seemed to be lacking compared to what it was when they were open before. The chocolate Martini comes in a small glass not even in a martini glass and it was $13. You don't even get bread and butter at your table. You get a bowel of parsnips to eat. Shaved fried crumbs in a bowl. If you want bread and butter you have to order it as a starter or appetizer and it's $4. What you get is a small loaf that is no larger than some croutons. The butter is way over salted and took away from the actual flavor of the butter. The truffle Caesar salad didn't taste any different than a Caesar salad from anywhere else. Definitely not worth $7. Everything here is pretty much a la carte. We both ordered the shoulder steak entree. One was supposed to be well done the other medium. The well done steak did not come out well done. Still was very bloody in the middle. Plus if you don't want the fries that come with the entree you can substitute something else. So we asked for vegetables with one of the entrees. They were black and overcooked. Definitely did not look like fresh vegetables. When the bill came we noticed they charged us $5 to have vegetables instead of the fries. They failed to mention this at the time of ordering. For $39 for a small shoulder steak and fries it was definitely not worth it. I could have had better at Applebees if I wanted steak with fries. For two people that had one drink a piece two salads and two orders of shoulder steak one with vegetables and appetizer of bread it was $150 with tip. Way overpriced for what you get. Definitely not worth the money. The ambiance is ok but I'm not going to pay extra to sit in the bar area because they made their dining area smaller. We were traveling from out of town and were looking for a place that served SEAFOOD. Not sure where to turn we looked on Yelp for help. Bentleys Grill ended being the right choice for us. I had the red snapper dinner and the other person with me had the halibut dinner. As we enjoyed our meal we kept commenting on how tasty the food was. In addition to the food, I felt the service was great with all servers having a smile and friendly attitude. Also the overall dacor and setting was really nice. Made a reservation last Friday for 5. We got drinks at the bar first and then seated to our table. I had the beet and goat cheese salad. It was served timely but it had no goat cheese and the server never came by to see how things were. My friend received her meal before the rest of us were served about 5 minutes later. I had the small plate of steak and mushrooms(FYI it is mostly mushrooms I think I had 3 pieces of beef. It was a disappointing first time at dinner there. Gone to happy hour many times at the bar and find that to be great. So if your excited to try the new menu. It's not so great! read more
