My hubby is a bit of a coffee snob, so finding a "real" coffee place is a must on vacation. Arriving in Kent for Potterfest 2017 & seeing the crowds EVERYWHERE guaranteed he would be seeking out a place in town. Walking into Bent Tree & seeing their roaster & containers with current beans was a good sign. He walked up & viewed the beans sitting in a grinder & came back to our spot in line with a thumbs up. The three baristas were hustling to serve every customer quickly & their smiles didn't waver for an instant. Who knew Butterbeer Lattes were so popular?!? The hubs ordered his usual - a cortado - while I aimed for an iced mocha. We logged onto the free wifi while we waited for our drinks. My mocha arrived fairly quickly & it did not disappoint. Just enough chocolate to have it mix perfectly with the coffee left me quite satisfied. While we were waiting for his drink, another customer asked a barista how often they roasted their beans & was answered with "every day!" - that's a win on the hubby coffee meter. His cortado had a bit of a wait, but it was worth it. He finished his drink & said that he was fairly certain we had found the best shop in town. Unfortunately, we live in Southern California so we won't be regulars...but it's nice to know that Kent has a great coffee place! read more

Bent Tree Coffee is the best coffee roaster in area! Let me explain why. First off, before I start kissing some major butt I want to point out to everyone that this is more of a store than it is a coffee shop. They do have one table with a couple seats that allows you to sit down and enjoy a cup, but don't plan on meeting a group of friends here because they cannot accommodate. Parking is sometimes scarce but that shouldn't deter you. Now, back to the butt kissing. Their coffee is hands down the best coffee you can find in this area! They import their beans from lots all over the world and they roast them right there in the shop. You can actually watch them do it. The variety is quite impressive. As a connoisseur of coffee I can tell you that these folks take great pride in their product and they never hesitate to help you find a bean that fits your taste. I think the owner is the guy who's sporting the Jesus beard, he seems to always be there and on top of everything. If you're a true 'Yelper' like me and you visit a lot of restaurants, you'll notice the best places will hang a sign that says "Serving Bent Tree Coffee". There's a reason for that, their reputation in the area is so well known that restaurants brag about serving their coffee. (i.e. Nosh Eatery, Taco Tontos, Tree City Coffee Shop, etc.) Their prices might seem kind of high but that's relative to grocery store prices. They're actually on par with other local coffee roasters, like Muggswigz in Canton. Although I noticed that Bent Tree doesn't tell you when they roasted the coffee you're buying. At Muggswigz they will sell you a bag of coffee at half price if it stays on the shelf longer than 10 days. Maybe that's something Bent Tree should consider doing. If you're a real coffee connoisseur and you're looking for the perfect cup, come out and support these guys, they deserve your business. read more

Bent Tree is a solid local coffee shop with a few drawbacks that prevent it from being truly great. First, it's hard to beat their prices, especially on beans, and the quality is much better than other places you'll find in the Kent/Stow/Ravenna area. Their drinks are also fairly priced even if you get a higher end single origin coffee as a pour over (which, at other shops, can cost twice as much). The biophilic atmosphere is a great place to work in, and there's always a good buzz to the space. Plants on reclaimed wood tabletops help you work better and focus more sharply. The music isn't usually too loud, which is fantastic. There's not a lot of seating, but it almost never feels too cramped. Great place to work or study. There are only a couple of downsides. For one, they have a habit of serving all drinks in to-go cups, even if you're staying in the shop. If you're after a nice notNeutral mug or mason jar to hold your beverage, you have to ask specifically for one (and, if it's busy, the staff may forget, which is understandable). I prefer mugs/jars for a better drinking experience and for the reusability factor, and I find it a bit perplexing that to-go cups are their go-to. In addition, there tends to be a bit of variance from beverage to beverage, which is especially obvious with flavored lattes. So if you get a maple latte two days in a row, one may taste completely different from the other. Although they've drastically improved their flavors, so that's a plus. All in all, Bent Tree is a cool place with lots of bang for your buck, but with a few minor tweaks, they could be even better. read more

My favorite place to purchase coffee in Kent! I mostly get whole bean but they'll grind it however you need it for your preferred brewing method, no coffee snobbery here. I have yet to try them all, but I especially love the Espresso and Black Squirrel blends. They have great coffee accessories including pour-over sets and grinders plus now they feature some nitro cold brew which is like *BLAM, In Your Face!* with high octane coffee deliciousness. Best cup of coffee. I do not consider myself a coffee snob by any means. I will drink it from Speedway or Starbucks. However at home I like to grind and press my coffee. Realizing a locally owned place was roasting beans I headed out to give them a try. The guy was friendly and answered all my questions, even a few dumb ones. I got a pound of the Papua New Guinea Dark Roast. Seriously the best coffee I have ever had. I can't wait to go back and try some different beans. read more

There are a lot of quaint hipster coffee shops around the Stow/Kent area, but I truly think this one sells the best quality coffee. I seriously wish I could capture the scent in a candle and burn one in every room of my house. But in the mean time, I'll buy the beans and grind them at home for a fresh delicious cup of coffee. I'm not kidding when I say my husband and I reserve this for weekends only so we can savor it from the comfort of our couch in pjs and go back for seconds. It's one more reward for making it through the week. Sure, drinking it on Mondays too might make my Monday more bearable, but I wouldn't appreciate the deliciousness that is Bent Tree as much. I have waited to make a review until I have been several times. The coffee is on the watery side and the menu is rather small, especially if you're looking for a drink that isn't coffee. I wouldn't plan on staying and hanging out for a while as seating is limited and the space is tight. I always try to stop here anytime I'm in town to visit my parents and every time it's a fantastic experience. The store itself is taken up mostly by the roasting equipment/coffee storage/etc., meaning that the main focus here is to buy your coffee beans/equipment or grab a cup to go, because the seating is very limited (one bar table against the window). Last time I was there and talking to them it sounds as if they're in the process of moving to a larger warehouse for roasting, which may mean a redesign of their current shop (?). I have liked every bag of beans I've gotten from here, which ranges from single origin beans to creative blends. So far, my favorite has actually been their PB&J blend, which is NOT a flavored coffee, but a blend of a different beans that give off fruity, nutty, and grainy flavors. You can also just buy a hot cup of coffee made with your preferred brewing method along with a variety of cold brews (drip, immersion, or nitro styles). Check out their website: they have single origin, blends, decaf, and half-caf. The customer service is always top notch here, too. The staff is always friendly and was very accommodating when I needed to return some equipment I was giving as a gift. There are about three seats in the entire area so this is a place where people go to only buy coffee. Not a place where your mom and her friends come to sit around and be charmed by the atmosphere. 9 out of 10 Quality of coffee: On par with the big guys, or almost. They roast their own coffee in house using mostly single origin selections. Brewing is done either with a pour-over or French Press. Occasionally cold brew is happening too. 18 out of 20 Price: Cheap, considering the quality of the coffee. A 12 oz. bag of beans cost from 12 to 15 bucks. Much cheaper than most. A cup of coffee isn't a bad price either. 10 out of 10 Baristas: My experiences with the workers have always been good. I still can't find a better cup then what these coffee artists throw down. Their product is stocked at foodie restaurants and boutique grocery stores all over NE Ohio. Never knew whole coffee beans to be dry and cracked w/no rich oils that I'm used to. Bean oil residue usually sticks to my grinder, but not w/their coffee. Nice that they have a Roast Date/Best by date label on the bag, which I didn't notice till I got home. I purchased Honduras Marcala medium roast, organic, Fair Trade @Heinens in mid June, it expires 7/10/2018 (roasted on 4/9/2018). Sour tasting coffee! Bummers since I like supporting local businesses. I kept seeing Bent Tree all over the Kent State campus so... my coffee/food critic like friend and I decided to go try it. I personally don't drink coffee but I sure do love my hot cocoa/chocolates!! This was probably the most light chocolatey hot chocolate I've ever had. But the coffee is where it's at here. "They really know what they are doing here" says my coffee loving friend! The smell of the coffee was excellent. Inside was really unique and cool, they have seating inside so you can sit and enjoy your drink. I really love the interior of the place. They even have some Bent Tree Coffee stickers! I will definitely have to try their coffee sometime soon! Everything they do (meaning the process) is killer when it comes to the drinks. Cleveland has a great food scene. There is no coffee in the city though. Rising Star Coffee is great. That is about it. Bent Tree Coffee in Kent could definitely make a case for best local coffee. I have been meaning to come down to Kent and try some coffee from here for months. They close at 3 on Saturday so be mindful of that. When I was down there they had around 10 different roasts with maybe 5 single origin and 5 blends. You can have it french pressed or pour over style. I think they may have regular drip coffee also. The cup of coffee was one of the best that I have had in a long while. If I still lived in Kent, I would be here every morning. It is easily worth the drive from Cleveland to Kent to pick up some coffee if you really enjoy quality. A cup could easily last you the 45 minute drive back up and you won't even realize what happened. I urge anybody who loves coffee to try Bent Tree. read more

They roast the most phenomenal coffee. I've never tried their brewed on site coffee as I am a wee bit particular about the way I brew my java, but I've heard it's fabulous as well. I prefer darker roasts but in all honesty, I've tried about 8 or so of their roasts and every one has left me in awe that coffee could really be that good. The Black Squirrel Blend always does the trick. Plus, if you live in Kent and are lucky enough to be walking around the Crain Ave - Depeyster St area at the right time, you'll smell the heavenly scent of coffee beans being roasted to perfection. So do yourself a favor and put down the Starbucks, travel west on 59 into downtown and make a right at the bottom of the hill (Water St) and travel a few blocks past the Mill, Scribbles and Standing Rock and you're in Bent Tree territory (on the right).
