Wow. I figured it would be fun for the kid, and of course have interesting pop. But we walked in…read moreand were greeted with toys and candy and ice cream and games and figures and much more. And pop. Ended up with some candy and ice cream. I got the Lake Erie Cookie Monster, which had chunks of cookie dough, etc., in it and was tinted blue. Fun and refreshing. Kid K liked her vanilla. Service was great. Prices are fair. The place is cool. Free city parking across the street. Wish we had this in my town; combine Rocket Fizz and a local toy store and a small ice cream shop, and you'd get close.

Botton Line: Soda Pop's kicks major ass…read more Why? Here's why: 1. Great location: It's located on W Water Street, just WSW of Columbus avenue...it's right in heart of (resurgent) downtown Sandusky. 2. Sweets: They have a very nice selection of olde tyme candy. You'll find the likes of Abba-Zabba, Goo Goo Cluster, Chick-o-Sticks, wax mustaches/lips/fangs, etc. Obviously, they have newer brands, as well. 3. Drinks: They have a superior selection of "craft" pop, including diet Dang, the best diet pop in the world. Also, I saw Ale 8, Moxie, Cheerwine, about 75 varieties of Root beer, and a bunch more pop. 4. They have ice cream floats (can't vouch for these...yet). ...best of all... 5. The back room: It's part pop culture museum (from the 50s to the 2000s) and part flea market. Need a poster of Wonder Woman (either Lynda or Gal), John Wayne, Arnold, or Magic Johnson? Get it here. Desire to posses the Gorf cartridge or Activision Football cartridge for your Atari 2600? You're covered. Want that Fat Albert board game that you've been missing since 1973? You're in luck. There are TONS of things to check out and, if you choose, to buy. I bought a couple of books that I had as a kid and haven't seen since the 80s...("The Encyclopedia of Hostile Aliens," and "Earth's Greatest Interstellar Battles"). 6. Video Games: This is especially cool...in the back room, you'll find a MultiGame machine that's in great condition. 55 games...1 quarter per play. Come in on Friday and you'll find that it's set on "free play." Yep. I don't know about you, but the next time I'm in Sandusky, with or without the kids, drunk or sober, naked or fully clothed, I'm stopping at Soda Pop's, and ain't nobody stoppin' me! FIVE STARS!

Coons Candy - First Visit…read more Let's go ahead and name what some of us have probably thought: pulling up to a place called Coons Candy comes with hesitation -- especially as a Black customer. It's an unspoken (and sometimes spoken) moment of pause, wondering what kind of experience you're walking into. But curiosity -- and a soft spot for old-school sweets -- led us to check it out. To my surprise, the staff couldn't have been more welcoming. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with friendly smiles and offered samples of fudge, toffee, and a few other homemade treats. That immediately softened the moment and brought on a bit of nostalgia -- felt like walking into one of those general stores my MawMaw would take me to, or a Cracker Barrel stop on a road trip. The store itself is exactly what you'd expect from a small-town candy shop: shelves packed with retro candies, novelty drinks, locally made honey and syrups, quirky gifts, and yes -- edible bugs. It's cozy and cluttered in a fun, old-school way. We left with: * Boba Vida popping pearls (dark cherry) * Sugar Daddy, Victory sticks, Stallion candy smokes, raspberry & green apple sticks * Locally made honey * A mix of glass-bottle sodas: * Sioux City Ginger Beer + Prickly Pear * Reading Draft Honey Cream * Drive-In Cherry Limeade * Nehi Peach * Ginger Strawberry tea * Hot & Spicy Ginger Beer This is definitely a place for folks who love that nostalgic candy-store vibe and don't mind digging through shelves of old favorites and funky surprises. ‍ Final take: It was a mixed bag. The selection was fun and the staff made us feel welcome. But the name? It sticks -- and not in a sweet way. That hesitation doesn't go away entirely, and I'd understand if someone else passed on the visit for that reason alone. I'm glad I saw it for myself. Would I go back? Maybe. Would I recommend it? Depends who's asking.

We stopped by today & had to buy some of the delicious fudge! Utterly charming store. I will never…read moredrive past again. Wonderful chocolates, hard candies & so much cuteness! Plus, really sweet people. I'm so glad we stopped! If you have a problem with name, please get some professional help. You're ridiculous. It's their last name.
