We had a good brunch experience. The restaurant is beautiful and I loved the industrial look. We enjoyed reading about the history of the restaurant as well and were glad to support this local spot. I ordered the chicken and waffles and my husband had the steak and eggs. We also ordered a side of pancakes. The chicken and waffles were a great balance of sweet and savory. The chicken was delicious. The waffles were also good, though I tend to prefer a little more of a light, slightly crips waffle. These were a bit softer. My husband said the steak and eggs were okay. Not much to say about it. We also got a small side plate of pancakes which actually felt like a TON for the price we paid for them. I can't imaging what the regular sized plate looked like. The food was delicious!!!! This was my second visit to Benne's and i wouldn't mind coming here for breakfast each time I visit Asheville to be honest. The staff is friendly and they always take good care of us. I ordered the Market Street Breakfast with Toast, Scrambled Eggs (with cheese), Bacon, and Potatoes. Listen...those were the BEST scrambled eggs I've ever had!!! My husband ordered the pancakes with bacon and they brought out four large pancakes that honestly could have fed my family of four. Unfortunately he took it upon himself to eat them by himself...but the pancakes won!! There was so much food he barely made it through half of them. I love the open kitchen, the decor, atmosphere and ambiance of Benne's. My only complaint is that they don't have more gluten free options (Bread, pancakes, potatoes). My options are limited because of my food allergies so I wish there were a couple more options on the menu but hopefully they will work on that in the near future. Benne On Eagle is located on Eagle Street in The Block Neighborhood which was once the place to be. I felt the history from the minute I walked in from the brick walls to all the art on the walls. The Legends of the Block are featured on these walls. These are the women who were the chefs and business owners of the street. There was even a book they let me look through to read more about them and since I love history I couldn't pass on that opportunity. Benne on Eagle is open for breakfast/brunch and dinner. I dined here at the end of the breakfast/brunch service and the service was friendly but I think I was forgotten about as it took quite some time to get my meal. I was the only customer there. This may be why I wasn't rushed out and given a tour of the restaurant walls and provided the book to look on my way out or they just saw that I was interested in the art and history of the restaurant and wanted to share. If you want to enjoy some good afrocentric food in the historic black district of Asheville, make sure to go for dinner, not for breakfast. I had read good things about this restaurant, and I wanted to check it out. I went for breakfast, and I found out that generally their breakfast menu is pretty plain Jane and made for residents of the hotel who don't want to try anything new. So, it's no different from any other breakfast place. I wanted the shrimp and grits, but it turns out they only do that for brunch. I went for the chicken and waffles, and they told me that waffles and pancakes were not available that morning. I was going to get up to leave, and they decided that maybe they could make a waffle. The chicken was not a specialty flavorful, and the waffle was a waffle. I went out of my way to go here, and it certainly is not worth that. I had read that their head chef was from the south, but it turns out that their head chef has changed to someone from South America, and so some of the more unusual items on the menu are really from South America more than the South. although they do still have fried green tomatoes, which are a carryover from the previous head chef. So, it's a black owned business, but don't go expecting good soul food. It's just a kind of fancy restaurant. read more

We order cornbread and crispy pork belly as appetizers. The pork was the most delicious, melt in your mouth experience with a tasty and sweet pistachio and apple butter glaze. The cornbread, however was dry and falling apart. Thankfully the flavor of butter carried through and made it somewhat appetizing, but yeah. It was dry. I told my server this and she said didn't say anything. We then ordered the salmon cakes, the lamb meatballs and the octopus. Overall, the protein for each of these three meals came out cooked well and tasting great. I liked the spice in the salmon and the potato salad to cool your taste buds off. The accompaniments for the lamb and octopus were completely off. The octopus came with pinto beans and tomatoes. This side has zero flavor and desperately needed salt. It was so bland it would have been better to not have it included in the plate at all. It tasted like it came straight out of the can. The same thing can be said for the lentils with the lamb meat balls. Completely flavorless. I was so disappointed - a good meal should have consistent flavor and dynamic textures and when only the protein accomplishes this, it's dissatisfying and a big letdown. The wine and cocktail selection was fantastic and our server was great. I appreciated that the host allowed us to change our reservation time for an early slot. When you walk in the front door of Benne on Eagle you are greeted by a large portrait of the prolific poet, James Baldwin. I started my meal with the cornbread and crispy pork belly. Strongly recommending this place if you are into trying creative dishes! However, portion is so small for the price. The yardbird was okay, since it was a half chicken (still pricy for $36, but at least it was a big entree). Fufu dish was SO tasty, but it was SO tiny. Very disappointing for the portion size since it was $24 - as the photo shows, it was more of an appetizer size. We had three small plates and were still hungry. The Ghanaian Red Red & Couch was more like a soup than shareable plate; we had to ask for the spoon. I don't know if it had couch or smoked trout but it was hard to find and chewy. The salted cod with mango did have nice mango flavor but that was my only observation. Looking for a nice elevated date night experience? This is the place! Allow me to get this out of the way: make a reservation. Now about the ambience I love the low lighting and being able to hear the calls of the chef just above the crowd. I am a foodie and love culinary TV. Yes there is music playing too but somehow it all works! Now that I have been request booth seating if you can get it. There is communal small tables together which for me makes it weird to have another couple in arms length but I didn't know the layout ahead of time. Food is devine! Bae devoured the pork chop dish. I didn't even get a taste! I ordered the catfish. Nicely breaded. Tender. I prefer fish fresh out the grease so the temp was a tad under for my liking but flavorful. The greens were tender and tasty. The sweet potato hash - bravo on the knife cuts - beautiful to look at and delicious. Ham is very present and you'll get the chew of the ham and that smokey flavor in each bite. This is the restaurant that serves breakfast and offers room service for the attached hotel The Foundry. As such, I had the pleasure of dining here for breakfast two years times and once for dinner. The menu options are minimum, but there is at least one option for everyone. We had the trout. The shrimp Caesar salad, the cornbread and Mac and cheese. When I tell you that everything was tasty, even a simple caesar salad!! The food is cooked to order and it is clear that they use fresh ingredients. Breakfast was just as amazing. An Example of them using fresh ingredients: the second day that we had breakfast we went closer to the end of breakfast time. Unfortunately we were advised that they ran out of oranges and were not able to squeeze additional orange juice! Yep, the orange juice is squeezed daily! The service was not really consistent. Two out of three times it was decent. The last day of breakfast could have been better. We arrived towards the end of breakfast and there was a wait. No one really asked us what we needed. We finally asked if we could have a seat. The staff were not particularly friendly and also did not appear to be in a big rush to accommodate the crowd. Benne on Eagle certainly has changed from the days when it debuted with a combination Low Country-Appalachian menu by Beard Nominee John Fleer and also from the time when it changed to a more Afrocentric menu. Now Benne has only has a handful of main dishes -- duck breast, strip steak, lamb meatballs, pork chop, catfish -- and they are a little hard to classify, though the restaurant is often categorized as modern soul food. I believe last night when we were there the menu had a total of only about a dozen items, including salads, appetizers and maybe half a dozen entrees. Service was very efficient and fast, and the ambiance is enjoyable. However, the fried catfish entree ($32) didn't even remotely compare to the incredible fried catfish we loved during the restaurant's early days. That was the best catfish I ever ate, bar none. I don't quite get what the chef and other management have in mind for the restaurant -- is it a hotel restaurant? If so the limited menu may be a disadvantage to some hotel guests. Or is it trying to be a cool Asheville restaurant in competition with places nearby like Limones, Chestnut and Cúrate? If so, entrees like Smothered Pork Chop ($38) and Steak with Peppers ($35) aren't going to attract the hip foodie crowd. read more

Popped in here on Halloween and we were so glad we did! Our servers were so friendly! They took really good care of us - we have had a late lunch so were just wanting drinks and a couple of small plates. The small plates did not disappoint - the grit cake was sublime...crunchy and warm on the outside and the grits were creamy but not runny on the inside. We had the kale and butternut squash salad which was dressed perfectly...the squash was delish and accompanied the dressing and kale nicely. We also got the sweet potato hummus and that rocked too! This was our third day in Asheville and Benne on Eagle was recommended by a long-time resident we met while touring the Biltmore Estate. What a fantastic recommendation! Their young chef recently received a James Beard nomination and one meal there clearly showed why. We started with cocktails and, based on our experience, you won't go wrong with any of them. To start, we ordered the Seared Octopus which is prepared with a sauce of chorizo, groundnut mole, black garlic rum sauce and cacao. What an inspired dish! Every bite burst with intense flavor and it looked so appetizing we forgot to snap a picture before diving in. We also ordered the Cassava and Bonita Potatoes Au Gratin and enjoyed that delicious dish with both the octopus and our entrees. It is the most delicious starch side my wife or I have ever had! Both Cassava and Bonita fall into the "tuber" (potato) category but are slightly less starchy and, in this case anyway, much tastier. The cheese in the dish is Muenster and they're seasoned perfectly with Green Cardamom. Don't miss them when you dine at Benne. Next we had our mains. For my wife, the Moqueca and Camarao (Shrimp) which comes in a divine sauce of coconut, tomatoes, Dende Oil, onions and farofa. It's like the coconut curry you may have had at your favorite Indian restaurant but lighter, less spicy and bursting with flavor. The shrimp were plentiful and perfectly prepared. I ordered the Haitian Griot (pork shoulder) with polenta, kidney beans, Pikliz, citrus jus and Chicharrons. One of the best pork entrees I've ever had. The flavors were complex and interesting in every bite and, despite it being a large portion, not a bite was left. Our server, Nehemiah, was engaging, knowledgeable and friendly and the service was on point the entire meal. If you're in Asheville, this restaurant is less busy than some of the more established eateries so you should be able to find a reservation that works with your schedule (we booked on the same day we went) but, once the word gets out how fantastic the food and service is, it may get a little tougher. We had a fantastic time at Benne on Eagle. Started with cocktails. They tasted great and had a dried lime garnish which just looked really cool. We had cornbread for the appetizer. This got us started on the wrong foot for $15 it was 2 tiny prices of cornbread. It was dry and nothing special except it did have a fair amount of corn and jalapeño. I did not think it was anywhere near worth $15 though. Insane. Was a little skeptical about what's to come after that but they turned it around! I had the salmon patties encrusted in corn nuts and it was one of the best things ever. The corn nuts were crunchy and so good in the patty. It had a creamy tartar like sauce in the side and a corn salad with perfectly Al dente corn. I didn't even know I liked corn like that. Because the dish was tapas I had a side of the mashed potatoes which paired so well and was just great. My husband had the smothered pork chop which was great with delicious mushrooms on top but we both agreed mine was the show stopper. I give a 5 stars to the chef. The breakfast was delicious. We had the mushroom toast and the parfait. Unfortunately, for a high-end breakfast establishment, they did not serve any specialty coffees like lattes, cappuccinos, etc. We ordered regular coffee. The server brought the coffee, and she did not bring us a spoon. We had very little cream for the two of us. The server disappeared for almost the entire time. She never asked to refill our coffee, and the hostess had to come by and help. The coffee was $4.00 a cup, even though it was not very good coffee. So, we spent $8.00 for bad coffee with no refills. The atmosphere was beautiful. The food and chefs did a fabulous job. The food server never came back after dropping off her bill, and she did not say much. Maybe she was having an off-day. We did tip her nevertheless, but the service had a lot to be desired. And, regular coffee that was not good coffee (and no refills by the server), should not cost $8.00. That's our honest review. At John Fleer's latest Asheville outpost, "Southern Soul Food" is elevated and modernized, but never loses its simple charm. The front of the house was impeccable. The hostess was warm and authentic, making me feel at home immediately. My server had a thorough knowledge of the menu, and was personable, attentive, and fun. The menu lacked vegetarian entrees, but that wasn't altogether unexpected given the type of cuisine offered. While I hope the menu will expand to include meatless options as time passes (humble suggestion for the chef: @noevilfoods chicken and dumplings), I didn't go hungry by any means. The akara fritters, made from black-eyed peas, were accented beautifully by a spicy yoghurt sauce and a sorghum mustard, both of which were fantastic - I couldn't pick a favorite between them. The beans and cornbread reminded me of a hundred southern meals from my childhood - harmonious flavors and familiar textures were at the forefront, and I can picture my grandma taking just such a dish to potluck. The macaroni and cheese was perfection. It came to the table piping hot, still bubbling from the oven, and served in a cast-iron container. The rich cheddar came alive with a bit of spicy heat (cayenne, perhaps?) in the sauce. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Benne on Eagle, and I'm pretty sure you will too. read more

Wish I could give this restaurant ten stars. We didn't see it written about on any recommendations for brunch and it's by far the best breakfast/brunch we had on an entire week trip to Asheville. You can tell each dish is created with love and Mark our server was a pleasure to speak with. Even the hostess was super sweet. Get here early on weekdays because breakfast is done at 11am but on the weekends it's later which is why we got here then. Benne on Eagle is a new restaurant, part of the Foundry Hotel. The space is pretty big with high ceilings and an industrial decor. Still, it has warmth and a cozy atmosphere. I believe it's owned by the same people who own Rhubarb. The food is a mixture of Southern, Appalachian and African with other influences. We had the gumbo, the catfish with waffles and the steak. I really liked all three but the waffles were amazing. Service was attentive and friendly with lots of information about the ingredients and the place itself. We saw the dishes that other people were having and everything looked great. I got some serious pork chop envy. So I know what I will order next time. Chicken and dumplings: the carrots were mostly undercooked to the point I couldn't cut one with a fork or butter knife, some were cooked well. The dumplings were dry and tasted like flour. The dish overall was sad. Steak and peppers: requested the steak be med and it was well, with maybe 1-3 pieces med/well. The peppers were too acidic. Cauliflower: the menu said it was roasted, the texted seemed boiled. It was also sitting in a bowl of broth which didn't help the texture. It felt like a (very) chunky soup. The mushrooms had to have been boiled. Salmon cakes: the egg salad type bedding/sauce was good until an overwhelming spice kicked it. I'm a fan of heat but this took over to the point where the flavor was lost. Practically zero dairy free items-- which is fine but just something to note. We were in town doing the Candlelight Tour at Biltmore, found the place online and really loved it. The service was timely and helpful. Being able to see the kitchen is always a plus for me too. We had the short ribs and the succotash. The short ribs were perfect, tender and flavorful. The succotash was a tad bit salty, but the flavor of the dish with the wide variety of ingredients helped compensate. Each bite garnered an "hmmmm" from me (lol) and that's not normal for me. Additionally, the atmosphere was enhanced by the portraits on the wall paying homage to female restaurateurs in the region.
