My dentist of 20+ years retired right before Covid. Being immunocompromised I was very leery to even attempt to go to a new dentist during the pandemic, but I did try TWICE and both times was majorly disappointed in their safety precautions, wanting money upfront for work not yet done, poor front office staff, scheduling confusion, (I had an extraction scheduled and the night before they left a message and cancelled with no reason given), etc. Both of those practices were larger, corporation type dentist offices. Lots of rooms, many employees, hustle and bustle all around & not much TRUE focus on the patient. Needless to say, I was pretty discouraged & probably waited too long to try and find another dentist AGAIN ... but then I found Dr. Stevens office in San Clemente. His office is run just like my retired dentist's office. It's PATIENT focused, smaller in scale, one dentist, excellent front and back office staff who TRULY care about the person in that dental chair. (I'm not afraid to go to the dentist but I had a total meltdown on my 1st visit with the hygienist. Sobbing because I had such horrible experiences at those 2 other places. I was quite embarrassed but the floodgates just opened! The hygienist AND Dr. Stevens we're both so kind and reassuring. They did not make me feel bad for freaking out and was able to give me confidence that everything would be ok.) I now have a plan in place to get all of my dental stuff taken care of and feel good about choosing this practice .... I live about 30 miles away and have no problem driving that distance to get the quality of care they provide. read more

Dr. Stevens and his team are awesome! I had heard good reports about him for years, and finally decided to set an appointment to catch up on dental maintenance post-pandemic, as I had a toothache that was bothering me. Fortunately for me, I was just in time: over the past few years a couple of teeth had decayed to the point where I could have had a serious problem at any time. I eat nuts every day, so I was rolling the dice and risking a double root canal without knowing it. The good news is that Dr. Stevens was able to fix my problem quickly, with a minimum of discomfort, and after all is done I will be better than before. I am a stickler for excellent work whenever I need a medical procedure. I had an excellent dentist before, but it became too much of a hassle to deal with that office, and you didn't always work with him but other folks instead. My husband and I started seeing Dr Stevens recently and both of us have had phenomenal experiences. Everyone at the office is friendly, kind and professional. Dr Stevens is an amazing dentist and very caring and concerned about his patients comfort. I had severe dental anxiety for years which I no longer have. Both Dr Stevens and hiss assistant were very attentive to my comfort level and very extremely gentle. I also greatly appreciated how Dr Stevens thoroughly educated me as to what was going on with my teeth, what procedure he would do and what that would entail. Was a bit nervous going in since it had been 3 years since my last visit to the dentist. I have to say Dr. Stevens and his staff were awesome. They took my insurance and fixed to cracked teeth I had. It was pretty painless and the staff was really funny so I actually had a good time with everyone. I had to go twice since they needed to do so much work:-( I have since recommended my girlfriend go as well. They also have a great whitening Kit for $99 that is prescription strength and works better than the Zoom that I used about 6 years ago. I absolutely love doctor Benjamin Stephens! I went to see him at Alicia Dental in LH, for a broken crown to be reposted and replaced (disclaimer: damage was done by an outside Dentist, not Dr Stevens), and a cavity filled. Two procedures simultaneously (which included laser shaving of my gums), and not once did I feel any bit of pain. Actually, I had to keep myself from laughing as he was performing the work: he's got an amazing sense of humor, partnered with Professionalism. The ENTIRE time he made me feel comfortable and pain free. He made sure to explain the treatments, and also made sure to ask if I was feeling comfortable along the way. If I were to summarize, Dr. Stevens and his staff have been the best dentistry experience I've ever had. I recently moved to San Clemente and didn't have a dentist yet. I had a front tooth veneer that cracked straight down the middle after 12 years. My wife started making calls and Dr. Stevens' staff was the only practice that answered the phone and returned calls. I'm glad I ended up with him because the entire staff was very friendly, got me in right away, was very knowledgeable and experienced, and was low pressure letting me make my own decisions. I got a temporary crown the same day for the broken veneer and another tooth that looked like it was going to come off at any time from the x-rays. I don't write many reviews, but I was so impressed with his team and their communication, I ended up replacing my 4 aging veneers and ended up doing a total of 8 to improve the color consistency. I have a checkered past when it comes to my dental care and for that reason I want to highly recommend Dr. Benjamin Stevens and his office staff. I have lived in many diverse locations in this country and have accumulated a collection of past dentists - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. I am not afraid of dentists, but the combination of avoidance, procrastination, bad prior results and frugality have caused me to take poor care of my teeth. Dr Stevens has (mostly) cured me of that. He is kind, gentle, caring, HIGHLY COMPETENT, cost efficient and does not lecture me if I "fall off the wagon". He explains everything that he is planning to do, what you can expect and addresses any concerns or needs you have. Location: In the Aliso Viejo Edwards movie center, so parking not so easy to find. Decor: Nice, New, and Clean. It had a soothing fountain running as you were waiting and a decent selection of magazines. Front staff: Not very friendly or knowledgeable. They were also a little pushy towards the end, telling me I had to book my appointment soon, before my insurance ended because it would start over the next year. They also sold me some mouthwash, which cost me $50 out of pocket, which I found out I could have gotten for less than 1/2 that cost, if they just gave me a prescription for it. Dental hygienist: Very friendly. Took a long time in explaining things and measuring each tooth. They also had a digital x-ray machine which was impressive, but it took forever. Dentist: He didn't spend very much time with me, and he seemed a little bit like a used car salesman. He told me I had two cavities, so I needed to get them fixed soon, and then he showed me some picture on the computer to prove it to me, which didn't mean a thing to me, because they all looked the same. Then he told me I had to get a special mouth guard for my TMJ, which cost $500, even though I told him I was wearing Invisalign retainers(which protected my teeth from grinding). Overall impression: I would definitely not go back. They just made me feel doubtful of what they were saying, so I gave them a 2 because I think building trust with a doctor's office is the most important aspect of the relationship. The only positive experience was the one with the dental hygienist so they got an extra star. read more

Dr Benjamin Stevens Goes above and beyond the normal Dentist. My son had a dental trauma at a young age and wasnt able to get Dental care for 18 years. Tried several different Dentists, His fear was so bad we couldn't even get x-rays. His teeth were at a point that they were dangerous to his health. Plaq buildup and decay goes to the atteries and can cause seriuos even fatal health problems. Dr. Stevens and his staff where able to get in a fix my sons problems.For me it was a miracle. He is very patient and gentle. His staff is also very friendly and helpful. The office is extremely clean and welcoming. Since I often go to the movies right by his office and happen to be looking for a new dentist, I thought I'd look up some of his reviews. He had 1 1/2 stars and pretty bad reviews, mostly regarding a terrible administrative staff, particularly regarding a very rude lady named Vicki, and a generally shady atmosphere. Since there were only a few reviews, and seeking the convenience of a very local dentist, I decided to look again today to see if anyone had decided to speak on his behalf. BAD BILLING - Over charging Dr. Stevens is a great dentist, great touch and very caring - fantastic work. His staff can be rude (Vickie) and billing practices (Vickie) are horrible. Over charging dental insurance and double over charging the patient - saying things like "insurance is confusing'. I have been an insurance broker for over 17 years, I understand insurance. I also understand "In Network" contract agreements and what it means. I know when they are submitting double the in network rate and then passing the difference off to me as if I were a cash patient and NOT billing in-network - which is what I pay for insurance for! Don't get me started on unauthorized charges to bank account which I had to dispute with my bank and replace all of my credit cards so this Vickie didn't keep submitting unauthorized charges of $250 at a time against my bank account. Unfortunately her actions, bad billing practices and cranky attitude have caused my family of 5 patients in total to leave this practice and seek dental care elsewhere. read more

Zero stars would be more appropriate. Alike many of the other reviews that I've seen on websites not controlled by this office, people are unhappy about the office staff. They insisted that I come to an afternoon appointment because my insurance year was closing and they wanted to "use it up" before the new year started. So they insisted that I come even though I told them I'd have my children. They, then, had the nerve to comment on how my child was fiddling with the water cooler. THAT is nothing. They did every single thing they could to milk the insurance and tried to get me to make another appt. quickly after because the insurance was starting over and they could begin a new set of charges. They do not honor or guarantee their work because when a crown they put on one year ago broke they told me they'd have to charge my insurance for it. Nice. read more

My crown fell off on a Monday afternoon. I called Dr Stevens office immediately hoping to get a next day appt but the receptionist told me I could come in right away and Dr Stevens would stay later for me. What service, very much appreciated since I was starting to feel the pain! I've been going to Dr Stevens for years and he is great. Gentle and very quick (and who doesn't like gentle and quick when you're having teeth drilled!) Would definitely not go back. First, he sold me a bottle of chorohexadine mouth rinse for $50. I later found out that the same bottle is available at my local pharmacy by prescription only for $7. I had some major dental work done and paid him in full. I get my statement of benefits from my insurance and found out I was significantly overcharged. The insurance company is still fighting with them to get the money. The dental hygienist, who also answers the phone, is nice until you cross her. Apparently she had a few rude things to say to my insurance rep and has hung up on them as well. read more

Beware of a money hungry dentist. I was new to the area and was in need of a dentist . I called and made an appt for a cleaning but when I arrived I was told that they can never do a cleaning on your first visit. Gee... Thanks for letting me know that when I called. Instead they made me watch an Invisalign video, then told me I needed my teeth whitened. They spent an hour taking painful x-rays then let me know that I was in desperate need of re-doing all of my past dental work. They basically tell you that every bit of work is an emergency if you don't fix it right away.... your tooth is gonna break in half. Unfortunately I fell for some of that and let them re-do a filing and add a crown. My teeth have never been the same. I had to completely stop using my Sonicare toothbrush because my teeth are extremely sensitive and usually throb after most meals. If you're thinking of trying this dentist, RUN FOR THE HILLS! Oh and even if you cancel your appts, they will keep calling you just like a car salesman does! read more

I totally agree with earlier comment. My wife and I was going to Dr. Stevens for 3 years but from day 1 we realized one lady in the front desk called Vicki is very rude, unfriendly, lieing and had a lot of issues with us in billing and scheduling. Dr. Stevens and the Hygenist are very nice but that was not enough for use to continue there. She has stopped sending post cards, not even phone calls reminding our apointments. In my case I didnt even receive an e-mail . For my last apointment (6 M cleaning) II left work at 3;10pm for my 4:00 pm apoinment and was there at 3;35 pm. This woman told me my apointment was at 3;30 and she turned me away. I had to argue with her then she called POLICE. Thats is how rude she was. So I dont recommend this place to anyone unless Dr. Stevens reaplace this woman with a more friendly and honest person with better public relations. read more

I went in there for a simple cleaning. He was trying to sell me $9k of veneers the whole time his hands were in my mouth. He removed 2 silver fillings because he said they were bad and replaced them. 6 months later I get cavities in both of the feelings he replaces. I also get a bill after all the work is done after I paid the office $450. I have insurance and not sure why I even got a bill after. 6 months later I get a $50 bill for missing an appt that I didn't make and would never return to this Person. They said it would go to collections if I didn't pay it. They try to extort money from their patients. They begged me to leave a positive review on google for them. They have all positive reviews on their website that they put their themselves. Nothing like hearing how great someone is from their own mouths. The other reviews are obviously fake. Just do a good job and put people above profit and you won't have bad reviews!!! read more
