3.5 stars. I hadn't been to Benihana in years, so decided to go to celebrate my brother's birthday. I wish I had known about the $30 off birthday deal, but you have to sign up for their club in advance and physically print out the coupon. The deal applies to dine-in dinner only from Monday through Thursday. Even though we had a 4:30PM reservation, we had to wait about 25 minutes to be seated. There was also a pretty long wait before our orders were taken and various courses were served, so just be aware. Scan the QR code to review the menu. To be honest, the online menu was a bit confusing to navigate. The main entrees come as either a "6-course" option that is mostly combos of 2+ proteins and includes dessert, or "5-course" meals with a single protein but sans dessert. Everything includes soup, salad, shrimp appetizer, dipping sauces, veggies, and steamed rice. $5.40 extra charge to upgrade to chicken fried rice. The soup and salad were the typical teppanyaki offerings, though the soup definitely could have been more hot. I appreciated that the fried rice includes bits of chicken, especially with such a large surcharge. The meats themselves were okay, maybe a bit dry but that's what the dipping sauces were for. Veggies were good, though I like how some other places also give you a second veggie, either bean sprouts or mushrooms. Our chef was not bad, relatively entertaining and fun, though nothing spectacular either. There were the typical eggshell toss and onion volcano tricks. Service was very attentive and better than expected during our visit. Ice cream was okay, and came as a pretty big portion in a bowl. The check was brought via Clover terminal, allowing you to pay right at the table with your card if paying electronically. Overall, not a bad teppanyaki experience, and prices were not as high as I was expecting. Portions are fair. However, I've definitely had better quality food at other teppanyaki establishments. read more

Raquel was an awesome server. She went over all the options & was very helpful . The restaurant is very spacious & clean

After reading Yelp reviews, I made a point of getting there early to avoid the long wait and at least have a chance of being seating a little early. I had a 12:45 pm reservation under my name for my dad's birthday. Arrived at 12:20ish and checked in at the hostess booth. Was told I will receive a text when my table is ready. Cool, cool... so I waited at the bar. Ordered a plum sangria. My sister arrives and checks in, then joins me at the bar. We get flagged by the hostess for our table and are escorted to the tepanyaki grill to find out the hostess checked me under a "Monique" (some completely different person). We looked at her tablet and told her she checked in the wrong party. Overall alright experience. Not authentic at all but we were there for the experience. read more

My family and I frequent the Benihana's in Downey quite often and have never had an issue of any kind. Tonight we were made to wait two hours for a chef to cook our food, only for said chef to have an attitude about whatever as he approached out table. We informed him our child had a peanut allergy and he thought it was funny to joke about him having peanut butter on his cart. Needless to say, we did not think it was funny. The family sitting with us was not pleased with the service and asked to have their bill so they could leave. The server decided to bring our bill as well and charge for everything we did not receive. Our bill totaling $110, for us to only receive our drinks, soup, salad, and one serving of edamame. My family is still unsure why we received our bill seeing as though we did not ask to leave. I can't help but to believe we were all grouped together because of our skin color. I wanted to be sure we weren't being discriminated against so I walked the restaurant and noticed two full tables, seated after us, had their chef and some food on their plate. Not only did I notice this, the table sat 1.5 hours after us had their chef appear two minute after ours. We are very unclear how they received such fast and attentive service while we waited patiently. This was the most disgusting service I have ever received and I am a very lenient person because I once was an assistant manager at a popular hamburger restaurant. The manager did not come one time despite us asking for him numerous times. I am honestly displeased with the service we received and will not ever frequent this restaurant again read more

Today I went to pick up my food and I waited a long time, and the service was very bad.

This review is to share my experience at this specific location to advocate and stress for future customers interested in coming to this location, please, save yourself time and energy by visiting other cities. I made a reservation for Sunday, 9/22 for 8:30 PM. My party of 3, arrived and checked in earlier and was seated. Once the entire parties arrived we were all seated and server came to take our orders. I am soooo thankful I ordered appetizers because the entire parties were sitting and confused for more than 1 hour. I checked in with manager on-site to figure out what happened and if there was a chief available. The manager did not validate or had empathy for the situation. Once I pressed the issue again and informed manager the long wait times for chief to arrive. Suddenly, a chief named Darren appeared with low energy and lack of professionalism as if he's been recently hired and didn't have knowledge of what the employee role entails. Darren provided a mediocre service, no enthusiasm and did not cook well the meats and did not serve plates properly. I watched the entire show and it was embarrassing and disappointing. My guess is that at this location there is no professionalism and organization as they did not know how to support and provide a resolution. I was very disappointed and lost my appetite in watching the so called chief cook the entrees. My party and I, immediately got up in disgust with the presentation and lack of professionalism from a restaurant. I asked to speak to on-site manager and paid for what I ordered which were drinks and appetizers. I paid $108 for 3 alcoholic drinks and 2 appetizers. The manager on site also lacked professionalism and empathy and did not even react or attempted to provide good and reasonable customer service. Approximately, 1 hour later I get a call from a male stating he's the supervisor of the supervisor and they attempting to collect entree fees of $180 plus tax since I ordered 3 trios and stated Darren watched my entire party of 3 eat his cooking of 3 trios of $60 each. First of all, I will not pay for improperly cooked meals and mediocre service. Second, I will not pay for entrees I did not eat nor my party. It is unsafe and a health hazard to eat not properly meats. I explained this further with supervisor over the phone and the supervisor did not even react nor apologized about the situation but was ready to collect $180 plus tax. I respectfully declined and was appalled with their audacity. I've had a horrible experience here and hope my story can help future customers new in the area. Please, visit a better city with better customer service. I am ready to discuss further feedback from supervisors about my situation. Best, Karla read more

My recommendation and the 1 star given is solely for the Downey location and, pertaining only to service. I had a 8:00pm reservation this evening for my anniversary, we are still sitting at our table waiting for a chef to come make our food. It's 9:25pm!!!! This is so frustrating and unprofessional, especially considering how expensive this place is!!!! Santa Anita location is way better, location is much bigger and so are the tables!!! Never coming back here again after this!!!!!! ***UPDATE*** My husband and I told the hostess we were leaving, offered to pay for our lemonades and she said no need to. We walked out and are going to Izzy's catering truck on Whittier. Should have went their to begin with, them spicy dragon noodles is anyway! read more
