I had a very disappointing experience at Benihana while celebrating my mother-in-law's birthday. To start, I want to say the atmosphere and the food were great, and our chef Cameron was amazing no complaints there. Unfortunately, everything went downhill when it was time to pay. When we asked for the check, our server Luis brought a handheld device showing a total of $852, with no itemized breakdown and no option to review or add a tip. This immediately felt off. I went to the front to ask about splitting the bill between four people, which is a very normal request in the restaurant industry. The host gave us a hard time and insisted they couldn't split it, which made no sense. When Luis came over, I explained again that we wanted to split the check four ways. He suddenly said, "of course," which contradicted what we were just told. Then he asked me how much the total was which was confusing because he had the bill right there on his device. I had already seen the actual total was $719.33 before. He then took the device to the back, came back, and showed us $213.07 per person. That raised a red flag. I went back and asked for receipts and sure enough, he had added a 20% tip to all four cards without our knowledge or consent. I called the restaurant and spoke with the manager, Terry, who claimed that Luis told him we had agreed to tip 20%, which is completely false. Terry was unprofessional, kept stuttering, and instead of resolving the issue, asked, "well how much would you like to tip Luis?" completely missing the point. We were never given the option to tip in the first place. When I pushed for a resolution, he hung up. We even asked to speak with the general manager, Carmen, or at least get a reference number for the complaint, but that was not provided. As someone who comes from the restaurant industry, I find this behavior completely unacceptable. Adding gratuity without consent and then lying about it is dishonest and unethical. The lack of accountability from management made it even worse. Great food and chef, but extremely poor service from our server Luis and terrible management by Terry. We had two signature cocktails, an appetizer, and a full six-course dining experience, and every single course was delicious. The clarified butter? Top tier! The Wagyu was so tender it literally melted in my mouth -- and don't even get me started on the Lychee Martini and Prickly Pear Margarita... five stars all by themselves! This is a frustrating review to write because the food and chef experience at Benihana are always great, but the service at this location has been consistently bad. And I don't mean once. I mean three separate visits. This is the Dallas location near the Galleria, and we've been here multiple weekend nights around 7:00. It's been surprisingly quiet every time, which makes the service issues even harder to excuse. Slow drink refills, the wrong drink brought out, no water, no plate, no napkin until I asked. At one point the server even forgot to write something down. It felt like we were constantly asking for basic things. To be clear, the chef was great and the food is always great. That's why we keep coming back. There's just no beating Benihana. The copycat hibachi places don't come close. The managers have been solid, which makes this more confusing. The issue has been the servers, and honestly they've just been bad every time. Fix the service and this is easily a four or five star experience. Benihana has gone downhill, got the filet and scallop hibachi filet was way over cooked and the 4 tiny baby scallops were way overcooked. Scallops were put on first and left cooking through the entire meal. My waitress asked if everything was ok I mentioned my food being pretty over cooked and she said if I want something free just ask. I wasn't looking for anything free I just expect a better experience and for the food to be cooked to the temperature requested. Per the menu, this includes 1) soup 2) salad 3) shrimp appetizer & veggies 4) homemade dipping sauces 5) Green tea Our server forgot to give us our dipping sauces. Green tea is apparently "upon request". I don't think my fried rice was with $33! It was good, but not that good. Ambiance: The restaurant was not clean. What's worse is that our server, Luis, went ahead and added a 20% gratuity to our bill without our knowledge or consent. That's the reason no tip option appeared on the payment device. When we confronted him, he tried to pass it off as a "mistake," which is hard to believe. We called to speak to a manager and Terry handled the situation poorly. He was unprofessional, dismissive, and seemed more concerned about the money than the fact that his employee added unauthorized charges to our bill. This is unacceptable. Adding a tip without permission and then lying about it is dishonest. On top of that, the lack of accountability from management makes it even worse. And they served us salads without letting us know that they had run out of all their dressings. This building is a nostalgic part of history right here! If you've ever dined at the old Kobe Steaks then you know the true greatness we were able to experience for all those years. Anyway....Benihana took over this space after Kobe's closed in 2020. I am glad there is still a hibachi spot to carry on the legacy. I always come to Benihana around my birthday - make sure you sign up for rewards for a special treat. I've been to this location twice now since opening and both of my experiences have been pleasant ones. It is a little pricier than most other hibachi options but the restaurant is spacious. The grills are a decent size so you are not stuck elbow to elbow with the person next to you. Grab a hot sake and enjoy the onion volcano :) read more

Absolutely horrific customer service. Called 3 weeks ago to make a reservation for a party of 20 ppl. They took my name and number and said they would call to book the party. Never called. A week later, I again tried to call to no avail through the call center which is the only way to book large reservations. Then I called to speak directly to a manager at the actual location. She was able to get me a couple of tables, but with no guarantees that we would sit together. So again, I called the call center to speak to somebody who can handle helping me with this larger party. The rep that picked up the call said I would have to speak to a supervisor but she couldn't speak to me at the moment and took my name and number again. I never received a return call. Today I finally called to try and get a supervisor on the line and I got Dion (spelling). This man surely does not love his job. He had no care in the world that this has been an issue. Told me he could not help me with the situation and I would have to speak to Tara who is the event coordinator but wasn't there to take my call. Circles for 3-weeks and he didn't even care to make sure a customer would be happy with their service. This is for 20 ppl on a Sunday when restaurants are not busy and they just lost our covers because of TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE ALL AROUND. They have a 3.5 stars in Yelp and I would think they would work harder to better their all around service and not turn away business. But they did. We will never return, and neither will the other family who frequents this restaurant who asked to have the event there in the first place. We are all disgusted by this situation. When we got to the restaurant we had to wait 30 minutes after check in, just for the host stand to tell us we could either wait an additional 20 minutes for one table or split the group into 2. We decided to go with splitting the group into 2 because we couldn't wait any longer, they then told us the tables are on the other side of the building. We were not told this until the party was gathering. When making the reservation they told us we would be at one table so this was a surprise to us. As someone that worked in the serving industry I understand that things can get behind, but I do believe that reservations should be put first and a top priority. Had a taste for Habachi and saw a $39 Special 5 course, served in the bar/lounge area not around a habachi table, which was fine. We walked in with reservations at 6, and was seated at the bar. Not a crowd at all for 6pm one other couple at the bar. Bartender unfortunately wasn't very friendly, almost stand offish:/ she took our order, recommended the Spicy chicken dumplings over the Pork, they were great! Crispy and could taste the filling and dumpling texture. My husband got the Spicy Tuna Roll, very disappointing:/, didn't taste very fresh, had to ask for Soy sauce and dish for mixing. The salad was iceberg, nothing great, with ginger dressing (which was drenched), both dinners one Shrimp and the Other Steak.. they were just ok:/ not the hottest food, a lil skimpy on the veggies, shrimp ok, steak slightly bland, but the fried rice was good! When the Teppan chef arrived he had Zero personality. Went through the motions and didn't make an effort to engage. The Teppan chef is the whole reason to go to any teppanyaki restaurant. We were at the same restaurant 2 months prior and had a great experience. I did notice 1 Teppan chef who was very engaged at the table next to us. However noticed the other 3 chefs during service just going through the motions. The food was lackluster at best but I don't go for an amazing tasting dinner. It's all about the show. I would not waste my money again at this location without knowing for sure we were going to have an engaged chef. It's about $300 I can save and use elsewhere. read more
