Refreshing Surprise - Passion & Care I was down the street getting a haircut and had a craving for sushi, so I opened Yelp, spotted Kanzi, and decided to swing by. I'm so glad I did. Kanzi is one of those refreshing surprises: an approachable neighborhood sushi spot that clearly cares about the details. They may not be trying to be an ultra high-end omakase destination with otoro and uni, but what they do offer, they execute with care, precision, and pride. The fish was clearly well stored and well cared for, and the cuts were clean and thoughtful. I tried the red snapper, eel, mackerel, yellowtail, masago, super white tuna with fresh wasabi, and one roll: the no-rice Cool Hawaiian. I'll post a few pictures as well because the presentation really deserves it. I sat at the bar and had the chance to talk with Hong, the chef preparing my food. I learned that he took over the restaurant from his brother and still visits sushi restaurants around DFW at least twice a week to keep learning, tasting, and improving his own craft. That told me everything I needed to know. There is real passion here. Hong believes the details matter, from a clean bathroom to the right Japanese knife, specially purchased for left-handed use. That kind of care shows up in the food and in the overall experience. Go visit Kanzi, sit at the bar if you can, and tell Hong that Tait says hello -- and thank you. Pro Tip: Kanzi is currently BYOB. There is a liquor store right across the parking lot, literally within about 50 feet. Walk in, head to the cooler on the far right, grab a cold bottle of sake, and bring it back with you. Came here for lunch and the ac was struggling and it's about 90 outside. I asked the waiter to turn on one of the fans. I ordered a salad, their tuna special role with tuna seared on top and sashimi salmon. The wait staff wasn't keen on assisting with the sashimi and pegged me for a roll kinda gal. No sir. I would like to order Sashimi. Not a big roll fan but ok, I will give your special tuna roll a chance. Maybe you are hinting that is the better choice? Nope. It was not. Tasted fishy. Did not finish it. Just tried one and passed. He also did not check on me until I was done and ready for the check. Maybe he was new? Now the Salmon sashimi was delicious. Buttery and clearly fresh. My take away, do not order the roll, order the Sashimi and do not come here when it's hot outside. You will be sweating. Don't expect lunch staff to be friendly. What a wonderful experience! We came to celebrate my partner's birthday with his family, and personally I wasn't coming with super high expectations because the menu wasn't 100% my style. I thought I'd come and be able to just say it was good. I was very wrong! The service was impeccable. Not only is the staff so friendly, but one of our party members was asking pretty specific questions about the food preparation/how it could be altered. They were so patient & willing to work with us, it was barely an issue to them. A chef even stopped by to make sure the alternative preparation had worked out alright! (It did!) Everyone was raving about their dishes, of which I remember there being some karaage, hibachi meals, sweet & sour chicken, and LOTS of fried rice - I gave some of these things a shot myself and was very impressed! I really liked their fried rice because I'm a salty girl. The staff also kindly treated us to a deep-fried roll on the house which was so yummy and thoughtful, not sure how we earned it haha! I personally ordered the tuna guacamole sashimi. It was so pretty, and then it tasted AMAZING. I was blown away by this dish. If you want something light and really refreshing I'd recommend giving it a shot. We were seated towards the front so I didn't explore a whole lot, but the restaurant seemed clean and well-decorated. I honestly don't think I tried enough food to warrant a review for that by itself, but I just had to come and say something about our amazing service. Chef José is incredibly nice and makes amazing sushi. He's also super friendly and loves chatting with customers, which adds to the great service. They have outdoor seating too, and it's nice that if you're sitting outside you have a view of the lake. First of all, the air conditioning in this place is...well, hubby was sweating within 2 minutes. Tab $75 for 2 orders of rolls, a bento box and hibachi chicken. In both cases, the chicken was so overcooked, dry like rubber balls. So lacking in flavor, especially the sauces. The rolls were okay, but we had to ask for wasabi and pickled ginger. Overall, not a great value. Also, if you are looking for a hibachi experience, there was no sign of hibachi grill tables. read more

I always enjoyed coming to Kanzi for a sushi bite! The inside is relatively small, so seating can sometimes be limited, so my family usually sticks to takeout! The only bad thing I can say was that your gps will get you lost no matter the app you use. It'll take you to the area, but not the suite it's in. But once you find the restaurant on that side of this newly developed restaurant area, you'll find a hidden gem. The service is great and the place is intimate enough for a date or family dinner. The hibachi area seats 7 people on each side, so you really get to interact with you chef and fellow diners. The food was very tasty. The shrimp and 2 lobsters were a nice touch and the place is the most affordable hibachi I've gone to. If you're in the area, you can't go wrong with this experience. read more

We had the california roll (only thing pictured because we devoured everything else the moment our plates hit the table) the hibachi steak & fried rice, and the fried banana! I know this won't mean much for real sushi fanatics- but the california roll was the best we have ever had! The hibachi steak cut like butter & melts in your mouth. The fried banana dessert was fresh (seriously, i watched our waiter take 2 bananas to the back and come back out a few minutes later with the dessert) and incredible! The restaurant was busy, but they managed to squeeze us in with a last minute reservation. I was in the mood for sushi and my favorite place isn't close to my house so I got on Google in search of a closer location with good reviews. Kanzi came up and after looking at their menu (which has tons of options) I decided to order the Geisha sushi roll with no cream cheese for takeout. When I placed the order online they said it would be ready in about 20 minutes but they were done in half the time. The people there were really nice and ensured me my roll was made as requested with no cream cheese. I was pleasantly surprised to see they had even wrote that on the box to ensure it was made correctly. I was extremely impressed by the presentation when I opened the box when I got home. There was a fresh flower inside the takeout box and plenty of soy sauce for the roll, giving me two portions instead of the typical one portion that I receive with other sushi take outs. A good amount of wasabi was also included, which was very much to my liking and more than one piece of jalapeno per slice. The roll was nice and thick. It was hard to put once piece in my mouth and be able to chew it so I started taking smaller bites...lol. The roll was absolutely amazing and I will definitely be back - next time I'll probably eat in the restaurant and enjoy the ambiance and some appetizers. Sat at the sushi bar for Wednesday lunch @11:30.. The restaurant's comfortably subdued lighting somehow seemed to focus on the meal when it was presented! The wait staff and chef were talented, friendly and efficient. I enjoyed the lunch menu's delicious 8 piece sushi. This was accompanied by a savory and satisfying miso soup and a lettuce and shredded carrot green salad with a creamy house dressing. I also took home a rainbow roll for my evening meal. I was happy to find ample soy sauce in a resealable container [not those difficult to open packets] and a healthy wasabi dollop included with the order.
