First, I just want to say that this place should be a 4-5 stars review type of place, and it has the potential to be. I've got to give it a 2.5-3 stars though. So, here's the "crap sandwich" review. We've been here, specifically this Carlsbad location, a few times in the last few months. The restaurant is clean and the ambiance is great. The hosts are friendly. Everything looks and smells great. We came here a couple of days before Christmas and we had reservations. We knew that it would be a full house and to expect some delays, even with a reservation for the teppanyaki grill. We waited for at least 30 minutes to be seated. Then we waited another 30 minutes. Eventually, we got drinks. Eventually, the show got started. We were one of the lucky groups who only waited around 60-90 minutes past the reservation to get served. Lots of other people got fed up and left. The food and show was great though. The chef was awesome and friendly. Can't remember his name, but great job. I figured this was just one of those nights. Busy night, close to Christmas, understaffed and overbooked. We came back another time to enjoy the lounge area and try the happy hour. 3pm, weekday, only a few tables being served, should be better this time. Nope. We were sat promptly, but waited forever to just get a drink order in. Once we got our drinks, we got our food order in and waited....and waited....and finally, one plate came out. Then another. It took forever to get the food out. I don't know if the kitchen was understaffed this time, or our server, while friendly, couldn't handle 3 tables. Today, we went back again. Maybe the other two times were flukes. We got there at 330pm and asked to be seated in the lounge. We were told that there's a 45 minute wait. The restaurant was relatively empty. Only one family at a teppanyaki grill, 3 tables in the lounge were occupied, and 2 empty tables that needed to be bussed. After we got a table and ordered, our food was out at 515pm. Almost 2 hours to get food. Our server was great. The food was good. It's the loooooooong wait times though. I worked in restaurants part time when I was young. I have a good understanding of how everything is supposed to run. The problem at this restaurant is how it's run. Service is painfully slow, the restaurant is somehow shorthanded, and guests are sitting there, just wondering what's going on. The manager is always walking around like he's doing something, but seemingly doing nothing. If this wasn't Benihana, or if it wasn't located near lots of locals and situated between a couple of hotels, it wouldn't make it. If it weren't a RESY restaurant, it wouldn't get those customers too. I'm not saying they I won't ever go back to this spot, but I would do it differently next time. I'd make sure to have a snack and a drink with me so I don't starve while waiting. If I'm meeting up with people, I'll show up an hour late so that by the time I get there, I should only have to wait another 30 minutes. But, I'll be ok because I'll have my drink and snacks with me while I wait. Overall, the food is still good, the staff is friendly, the lounge and bar is decent, and if you're going for the show and the ambience, it doesn't disappoint. If you can endure the long waits, and are in no hurry at all, go for it. If you need to use some RESY credit on your Amex before the quarter ends, do it. If you go and experience no wait times and everything was on point, count yourself lucky. We came for a early dinner and happy hour had just begun as well we tried a few items from the happy hour menu but had to order them at the bar area, I tried the black pepper teriyaki wings and the shrimp crunchy roll and also the salmon avocado roll they were both good but very heavy on rice I ordered the seared ahi entree which was great I really enjoyed that with the fried rice upgrade overall the experience was nice & definitely fun! read more

Made reservations for 6:45pm on a Sat. (MLK weekend). This place was extremely busy when we arrived and was told it will most likely be a 45-60 min wait. We were prepared to wait after reading all the yelp reviews. A couple with a baby said they had reservations at 6:00p and by 7:00p was still not called so they ended up leaving. There were so many large parties. On a positive note we ended up getting seated within 45min. And the service and food made up for it. Drake our waiter and Eduardo our chef were the best. Loved all the quirky jokes Eduardo had during the presentation. Drake never let our drinks go empty. Food was cooked to perfection and seasoned nicely. I ordered the Slash N Meadow and the rest of my family had the hibachi steak and chicken. I was also celebrating my birthday and redeemed my bday gift certificate that is given when you join the Benihana Friends with Benefits. Per usual Benihana tradition we got our ice cream dessert. Mine had a candle and our waiter sang happy birthday in English and then in Japanese while banging to the beat on a tambourine. He took a family picture and printed out a complimentary photo with the Benihana logo. We all had a great to It was nice to see Managers out on the floor and checking on the diners and also dealing with the upset people having to wait. Man oh man. I made reservations for 12/31/25 for 2 to go to Happy Hour because i saw a tiktok of the delicious looking appetizers. I asked to be seated in the bar area. I get there right on time and there are at least 5 people in the lobby area. No problem i think, i made reservations. The blonde lady at the front said, "We have you checked in, it'll be a few minutes." Excitement!! 15 minutes pass by and we're still not being seated. There's a man who looks like he's in management helping people get seated and 4 teen looking people just staving around at the desk. I figured i should ask them, but figured they probably wouldn't know. 30 minutes passes by and now people arrive. The lobby area is full, barely anyone is getting seated. The 45 minute mark is near, i ask the blonde lady when am i next. She tells me I'm literally the next reservation. It is now 5:40pm and we are finally getting seated. We were seated at a table and not in the bar area. I asked the host if it was Happy Hour and he said they have one, but not for today because it was a holiday. That was not communicated on the website nor the reservation with a comment. I still sit down because now I'm hungry and i just waited over an hour to eat. I learned that a group of 3 also made reservations for 4:45pm and didn't get seated until we were seated. The host was okay, the server was cool, and the chef was cool. The cool thing i didn't know existed was that they take pictures of you and give you a hard copy. Lastly, the food was good. I'm so disappointed in this establishment because there was little communication about why things were taking forever. I didn't realize that people came here on NYE, especially on a rainy day. If things are just explained, I'd be less annoyed, but having a reservation to wait for over an hour is unacceptable. This was another holiday gift card stop! I haven't eaten at Benihana in probably 10 years. I strongly suggest you make a reservation! We did an early dinner at 5 pm and by 6:30 pm the waiting area was packed. I would not eat here if you want to be served and eat in under an hour. You will wait. So get used to it! After the server gets your drinks and soup/salad you might be waiting another 25-30 minutes for your chef to get to your table. I know its kinda corny, but I totally enjoy chef's show and the social aspect. You also get to see what is in your food and in terms of the fried rice (so delicious!!!) there is lots of sodium and butter! While visiting one afternoon, we grabbed a seat at the bar. Service was a bit slow, as there didn't seem to be a dedicated server for that area--leading to that classic Benihana wait. However, the $39 three-course bar special was worth it. Although the meal is prepared in the kitchen rather than at a hibachi table, the food was just as flavorful and served much faster. I have to start this off by saying this is my first 1 star review. As I like writing positive reviews and giving places the benefit of the doubt. This place was AWFUL. Had a reservation at 6:45 and sat down at 7. Our chef didn't come to start cooking until 8:45.... 2hrs past our reservation time. No one decided to come check on us or let us know what is going on. When we finally found someone and asked what's taking so long they said a few chefs called out (would have been nice to have a heads up, maybe we would have left. Or don't take so many walk ins/reservations with limited chefs). When our chef finally arrived, he looked miserable and constantly made snarky comments about management and his coworkers, which was super awkward and uncomfortable. Had a stack of dirty plates and cups in front of us with no one stopping by to pick up. I grabbed them all to take them myself at this point since we had no room in front of us, manager saw me grabbing them and just walked away, didn't even offer to help me. As someone who owns/manages in the food industry this was completely outrageous to me. Avoid this place at all costs. Son's first Benihana birthday experience was terrible. read more

The food.... Fried Rice- very good. High Gatlic. Loooov3d the butter scoop. So good! Steak- so tenders. Perfectly cooked. By far the best part of my meal Shrimp- jumbo and tasty - so jumbo i had to look twice to make sure it was cooked lol. It was tasty Soup- Steaming Hot ! We had a reservation for 8:30 PM but were informed upon arrival that there would be a 30-minute delay due to overbooking. After waiting 30 minutes, we inquired again and were told there were still three tables ahead of us. Additionally, I would like to bring to your attention the condition of the women's restroom. I recommend this Benihana location for drinks and dining in the lounge area. We were able to be seated immediately there on a Busy December Friday. If you want teppanyaki/hibachi you might want to make a reservation. We were able to see a few of the hibachi tables and they seemed to have lively hosts and having a great time. Our sushi rolls were great! Our server was excellent! Great drink selection. This location is in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn Express, very convenient for travel. read more

The service was friendly but slow going at first. By the time our chef arrived and got going, it was 1:30pm. I don't know if that was because we got the most awesome chef ever-- he was worth the wait. Trevor cracked jokes throughout and entertained even my tweenager. Trevor had some great knife/utensil juggling skills, a wonderful demeanor with the kids, and deftly crafted a unicorn with fried rice. The value for the money wasn't the best for those that don't intake grains/veggies but pretty decent for those that ingest fried rice, vegetables, soup or salad, and the main entree. This location was conveniently located right off of interstate 5 and parking was easy. Bathroom was clean. It was relatively chilly in the restaurant, so consider bringing a jacket. read more

Possibly one of the worst overpriced meals I have ever had. I get dragged here every few years by someone who wants to celebrate something, with the idea that this must be a special place. We went in and stood at the unattended hostess desk for several minutes without any acknowledgement from employees. Walked over to the bar and stood there with nothing happening. Was close to 10 minutes before an employee asked if we had been helped. Decor is sparse and neither Japanese nor cozy nor convivial. Food is mass produced. I would compare this to what you get on a cruise. It sounds like it's good quality and it's entirely possible that the ingredients are fresh but you would never know when they are drenched in salty over seasoned sauces that mask the taste of the food. As a teppanyaki grill, almost all the food items are packaged as a meal that includes an onion soup that tastes decent but I suspect that it contains a ton of salt. It is followed by a salad that consists of generic lettuce salad mix with a ton of ginger salad dressing dumped on top. It's then followed by a course of rice that can be upgraded to fried rice with eggs, protein and chopped veggies. It's prepared in front of you, loaded up with tons of safflower oil and salt. Next is your protein and veggies which are promoted as wagyu beef or filet mignon or Chatieaux briand de beouf. If you can order something else like shrimp or scallops or lobster or something fancy because you're celebrating, right? Everything has salt and pepper heavily loaded on it on the oily grill. Looking at the cuts of beef, I bet I can get much better quality at Costco. You end up with bland tasting, salty protein that is greasy on your plate. The schtick is exactly the same as it was the last time we came. Sorry party tricks that haven't aged well. My 13 yr old found them amusing because she's never seen them. But I would not call this a performance by any means. Final course is ice cream. Which is very generic stuff that is bought in bulk. I ordered sushi for myself which was ok- nothing to write home about. I did sample each of the courses and felt fine until I tried a flavor add on of grilled mushrooms and the grilled beef fat of the beef. I immediately became bloated and slightly nauseous. When I got home I ended up drinking 4 glasses of water to feel better. I suspect that MSG is heavily used in their food. Overall, great visit on Mon, 4/21. It was so nice to do the reservations via Open Table. Our reservation was for 6pm. We sat with another family of 4. It was funny at first because the first chef came and as soon as he read the orders, he realized he was in the wrong table. Few mins later, our actual chef came and he was very entertaining. I love his bit of the color of fried rice using soy sauce based on the color of your arms. The food was yummy. I ordered the scallops and it was very tender. This is about the only place I order scallops. My friends ordered a Filet Mignon, Hibachi Chicken and Salmon. We all got fried rice. It felt good that we were there a good decent amount of time. They dont check you in unless the whole party is there but that doesn't even matter since you won't get seated till much later. Why keep coming back if it's that bad? We've been to many locations for Benihanas and this is by far the best. The location in Mission Valley is really small and very uncomfortable because you're right on top of the next table or sitting back to back to them. This location is huge and even when it's a packed house, you don't feel claustrophobic like the other locations. We've been here about 5 times in the last year and each time is amazing. This time we got the fishbowl margaritas which were amazing and a pretty solid deal even though they're $60 because it's at least 5 regular drinks worth. The show is great and these chef's work their butts off at the grill. We love all the courses and it's great when we bring our daughter because she only likes ranch dressing on her salads and they have a delicious ginger dressing that's amazing. It is a little more expensive than your standard japanese restaurant but you don't get dinner and a show at those places. Just servers that drop off your food and then bail. Not here though. My work was offering Benihana as a lunch option so thought "why not?!". It is pretty expensive and didn't know they offered sushi so thought "why not?!" Ordered the CA roll ($14.70 and came out to $19.33 total) and it was was pretty good. Provided a TON of packets and sauces which was generous. Packaged perfectly with the beautiful Benihana bag. I don't know if it is enough to fill you up(wasn't for me) and maybe the CA roll is cheaper in the restaurant or with another delivery service. Honestly, if you want Benihana(why not?!) you should just go to the restaurant. It's all about the experience more than the food. read more

This was probably one of the worst, if not the worst, dining experiences I have ever had. Our family wanted to go celebrate accomplishments and life milestones here, but we deeply regretted it. We made a reservation for 7:00 PM on a Saturday. At 6:48 PM, we got a text message that our table was ready. We were already on our way and excited to get seated upon arrival. However, when we arrived, the hostess told us it would be 10-15 minutes because it was backed up. We checked in after 15 minutes and got a response that they're still backed up. When seated, we were missing a plate. The server did not come out until 7:43 PM. We ordered our drinks and got them at 7:53 PM. There was no chilled glass for my father's beer and we had to ask again for the missing plate. We finally got our soup at 8:09 PM. This is 32 minutes later after a 36 minute wait. In addition, the server spilled the hot soup and it almost spilled onto my sister! We got our salad at 8:24 PM. The chef finally comes out at 8:43 PM. A few of us ordered just white rice and it never came out until we had to ask for it. It came out at 9:13 PM. In addition to this, the menu said that we get green tea with our meals. We were never asked if we wanted green tea. Instead, we had to ask at the end if we could get it. This was a horrendous experience and I would never come back. STAY AWAY! Dinner at Benihana has been on my bucket list for a long time, and I was sadly disappointed with my experience. I visited the Carlsbad location 2 twice in one week. The first time was on a Saturday afternoon for lunch with my wife. We had reservations but there was no wait at the time we arrived at 12 noon. The place was empty. We were seated with another small group. When you go to Benihana, you go for the experience. Our chef was not very entertaining. He was a nice guy, but he lacked any kind of performance or presentation. On top of that, the grill that he was using was not working correctly. He said that it would get too hot and he didn't understand why that station was not closed. At one point the manager came over and told him that there was too much smoke, and he advised her of the issue with the grill. Later that week we took our kids on a with us on a weekday to give it a second try. We thought maybe it would be better. Our chef was a little more entertaining but the grill area that we had, had a broken light that kept blinking on and off the entire night and the chef complained that it was making him dizzy. The food was just OK. Nothing to really rave about. My other issue was with the "Friends with benefits" club that they had. us sign up for. On our first visit, we signed up and they never gave us any credit or points. I tried going online the next day to see if I could get help to fix it, and there was no online support. When we came the 2nd time, they did give us our points but said there was nothing they could do about the first time. We also were told that just for signing up you would get a free appetizer. We tried to use it on the 2nd visit and was told there was no reward on our account. We ended up just paying for the appetizers. Overall, maybe my expectations were too high. For the $400 we spent over the 2 visits, it wasn't worth it to me. You can get much better food and much better service from other places. The Hibachi that I had on a cruise ship recently was better than my Benihana experience. Probably won't be back. read more

I got here at 645. Seated pretty quickly! We sat with another family! Super cool by the way! I was with my family. So the waitress came to take our drink order about 7ish... she then told us it would be about 45 minutes to hour wait for a chef. We said totally fine! What made us upset was that, there were 4 other tables that sat AFTER us and their chefs came within 15-20 minutes! It was 8:05 and no one had still come to our table yet. We told the waitress that we're getting a little frustrated and it seem a little unfair at this point that other tables have their chefs and we're still here waiting for our food. She apologized and told us he should be coming shortly. We were already annoyed and upset but by the grace of God we had the BEST chef ever, SHOUT OUT TO TREVOR!!!! Made a reservation for 630, didn't get seated till 8pm. Then we were told we wouldn't have a chef until 9pm. All of the locations are like this. Disgusting service that has gotten worse year by year. read more

My wife and I visited for New Year's Eve dinner. She was experiencing the restaurant for the first time, while I had dined there once several years ago. We were seated promptly, which was a pleasant start to the evening. Unfortunately, the service fell short in several significant ways. Our server appeared inattentive when taking orders, resulting in multiple errors. My wife requested egg fried rice with no vegetables but received chicken fried rice without egg. A similar mix-up affected someone from the other party at our table. I ordered teriyaki beef, but it arrived without any teriyaki sauce; when I pointed this out, the chef showed me the order ticket, which indeed omitted the teriyaki entirely. Most concerning, one member of the other party never received her entrée at all, it was simply forgotten. The most uncomfortable moment came at payment. The server handed over the card machine, explicitly asked for a tip, and then stood watching while I completed the transaction. This approach felt overly pressured and awkward, particularly given the subpar service. I strongly suggest you reconsider this practice to avoid making customers feel coerced or observed. While the food itself was enjoyable when it arrived correctly, the overall experience, combined with the pricing, does not justify a return visit. We're unlikely to come back. read more
