I rarely write reviews like this, but this one really bothered me because Benihana isn't just another restaurant to me--it has been a FAMILY BIRTHDAY TRADITION for decades. I have Polaroid birthday pictures from Benihana going all the way back to the 1990s. I could have celebrated my birthday at plenty of other restaurants, but I'm a stickler for tradition. Unfortunately, after Sunday's experience, I may need to rethink that tradition. The evening started with nearly an HOUR wait just to be seated because they were apparently understaffed. Once we finally sat down, it took almost ANOTHER HOUR to be served. We ordered drinks, and somehow our FOOD arrived before our DRINKS. That alone tells you how the evening was going. I brought my concerns to their attention, but what disappointed me most was the lack of acknowledgment from management. When customers are waiting that long and spending this kind of money, a simple apology goes a long way. At the very least, I thought they might comp the drinks considering they arrived after the food. Nope. Nothing. Then there was my birthday certificate. I've been a longtime member of The Chef's Table and have received the $30 birthday certificate for years. Now it can only be used Monday through Thursday. I understand restaurants change promotions and policies, but it's frustrating when longtime customers who have supported the restaurant for YEARS can't use their birthday reward simply because their celebration falls on a weekend. And then came the icing on the birthday cake--I DIDN'T EVEN GET MY PICTURE because the printer was broken! For some people, that may not seem like a big deal. For me, it was. I have decades of Benihana birthday pictures, and that photo has always been part of the experience and the tradition. After spending a significant amount of money celebrating my birthday here, I walked away feeling like the entire experience was mediocre at best. The service was painfully slow, the food wasn't nearly as good as what I've experienced at Benihana locations in California, where I'm originally from, and management's customer service left a lot to be desired. Restaurants have bad days. I understand that. But when EVERYTHING seems to go wrong--an hour to get seated, another long wait for service, food arriving before drinks, no meaningful response from management, a birthday certificate I couldn't use, and no traditional birthday photo--it becomes more than one small inconvenience. The most disappointing part is that I chose Benihana specifically because of the memories and tradition I've built there over the years. I wasn't expecting special treatment. Benihana in Alpharetta is the preferred Atlanta area location for my family. The service is good. The chefs are great and entertaining. Yet, the wait times vary. My last visit, the group waited awhile to order, and following our orders, we waited awhile for chefs to prepare our food. Most recently, I tried a new menu featured item called Bounty of the Seas (not pictured) and the chili shrimp roll. The Bounty of the Seas had scallops, shrimp, and fish; it was very bland and not prepared in hibachi-fashion, which was misleading. It was actually steamed in a bag on the grill. I would never order this menu item again. I would stick to hibachi entrees and combos listed on the menu, instead of new featured entrees. The chili shrimp roll never disappoints! I've been coming to this Benihana location a few times a year for over a decade now. I've been to multiple other Benihana locations as well (Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles and San Diego). As a whole, Benihana is really good! Food is good, service is always good albeit sometimes really slow (classic Benihana), and there's always a good vibe to the place. But this review is not about Benihana as a whole... but one chef in particular. Chef Chris.... Is the most FIRE chef I've ever had at any Benihana location I've ever been to. That guy is an absolute wizard of entertainment, charisma and cooking. He's unique with his routine, he's incredibly entertaining, and last but certainly not least... his food SLAPS! Dude cooks it perfect every single time. I've had him as my table's chef about 5-6 times now. Every time it's been absolutely electric. I did not see a health score anywhere in site. Alcohol consisted of 4 glasses of wine, and 3 beers among the adults. Total bill with 20% tip was $550. Kids meals were $26 each. Who would've EVER thought that Benihana, of all places, would become my favorite place to get a Burrito? I tried their Hibachi Steak Burrito (they currently have an awesome promotion for buy one get one free on Monday's), and I was BLOWN away. They are able to get the proportions right so that there is a good amount of their yummy fried rice along with a decent amount of hibachi steak wrapped tucked into a flat topped seared and sealed burrito. It already tasted awesome without any sauce, but was absolutely delectable with the eel sauce! The side salad with the ginger dressing was also quite yummy. Place to order online at the beginning of opening waiting forever to get it I received it. I got a hibachi steak bowl supposed to have extra steak on it that I paid for when I received it. It was only one serving. The restaurant tried to convince me it was double portions. I told him this is a dish I get all the time at another location and it's not double portion. The manager told me to wait and they will give me an extra portion then after I wait, it came back and said no they said they measure it and that was the amount I should've gotten after you had me sit wait again for an extra portion then go we need on it. As I went to the car, I just happen to have a 2 ounce cup and when I put the meat in it it was only half full proven it. It was only 1 ounce not 2 ounces which is supposed to be in the first place. There's no way I was paying $18 for a big pole of rice I want. I'm going back in a refund and I have a wasted one whole hour with this ordeal and I still have no lunch. Poor customer service also though waiter that initially handed me my to go order with me that I didn't pay for extra sauces and it was clearly under the receipt. If I could give zero stars, I would. We had a 7:30 PM reservation, but when we arrived, we were told it would be another 25 minutes before we were seated. What's the point of making a reservation if the restaurant doesn't honor it? It completely defeats the purpose. We planned our evening around this reservation, only to be left waiting with no explanation or apology besides "there's just people in front of you". The staff seemed indifferent, as if this was just business as usual. If a restaurant can't manage its reservations properly, it shouldn't take them at all. Best Benihana experience yet! My wife and I booked a reservation for 3pm yesterday and arrived a few minutes late due to traffic. When we checked in at the front desk, the manager, Dave, said it would be a little while before we could get seated due to a party of 8 ending up being a party of 15 that had already started their meals with the only 2 chefs on duty. My wife said I was going to be very upset with the long wait and as an alternative he suggested we could dine in the sushi area right now and order off of the regular dinner menu which would be prepared in the kitchen. He also said he would offer us a discount for the inconvenience of not having the food prepared at the Hibachi table. We have been going to Benihana for over 40 years so the show for us was not that important. We love the food and did not mind getting served in the lounge. And to our happy surprise, I can honestly say the service we received from Ricardo was exceptional. He kept checking on us to make sure we had everything we needed or wanted and he brought the courses to us in a very timely manner and the food was as delicious as ever. We were very happy to find out that you can dine in the sushi area as we thought you could only order from the lounge menu. I do believe the next time we go to this Benihana, we will again sit in the sushi area and hopefully be served again by the wonderful, friendly and professional Ricardo. read more

Then our wonderful server, Tibor, he was one of the best servers we have ever had. Very attentive, understanding, and GREAT with communication. I had such a great time at the Benihana in Alpharetta. Everyone there was so kind and engaging. We were lucky enough to be sat with a great family. We shared so many laughs, and our chef, Jason, was the star of the show! I got the salmon hibachi and it was delicious. Cooked just as I requested. I also got the Exotic Mojito, and it was AMAZING! Not too sweet, but just sweet enough. So refreshing. The restaurant itself is a little dated, but most benihana's are. This one beats the Atlanta location by a long shot in every category! Went to Benihana in Alpharetta on a spur-of-the-moment visit for my birthday with my two kids while my wife was away. We were seated with another very nice family who were also celebrating a birthday, so the atmosphere had potential to be fun and festive. Unfortunately, the experience was mostly underwhelming. Prices were far higher than expected -- $45 for the basic steak hibachi, which includes soup, salad, vegetables and the standard shrimp appetizer. I understand prices rise over time, but this felt steep for the quality delivered. The hibachi chef was polite enough, but the performance felt uninspired and sloppy. Food was scattered around the grill, and the meal was served in odd stages. Rice and vegetables came well before the steak, leaving me either to eat in pieces or let everything sit and get cold while waiting for the main item. For a hibachi meal, timing matters. The steak itself was the biggest disappointment: mediocre, fatty and noticeably lower quality than what we've had here before or at other hibachi restaurants. What made it more frustrating was that throughout the night, staff came out to sing happy birthday for at least two other tables, but not ours -- even though both our table and the family seated with us were celebrating birthdays. It felt like a miss on what should have been an easy hospitality moment. To end the night, we waited around 10 minutes for the check before I had to get up and find a manager, then waited another five minutes after that. It wasn't a disaster, but it was a mediocre and overpriced experience that no longer feels worthy of a special occasion. We used to make hibachi a yearly tradition, but there are far better choices now for celebration dinners. This was a very disappointing experience! The prices are way too high for what you get, from the food quality to the service quality! The fried rice was undercooked, the filet had no taste other than the seasoning, the salad dressing is not a customary Japanese steakhouse dressing (way too sour for my taste), and the grilled vegetables consisted of only zuchini and onions! Service was horrible, they never came back to check on us, we had to go find someone to get to-go boxes, and I had to wait quite a while to get a receipt. The restaurant was fairly empty and we still waited about 20 minutes for a table. The vibes were off from the very beginning. We were eventually seated and placed drink orders. It took quite a while for them to bring out the salads and miso soup. It took even longer for the drinks. We placed our orders for food and after quite sometime other guests at the table started to make remarks about how long the food was taking and how other people that got seated after us were having their food made. Walked in for lunch at 11:50am with a group from work. The restaurant only had 5 people seated. We had to wait 15 minutes to get our drink order taken then another 10 minutes before our food order was taken. We waited until 12:50pm for the chef to start cooking our food and that was after we had to walk up twice to the server asking her if we can get the cooking started because we needed to get back to work. For how horrible the service and wait time was, we were very patient and no one apologized for the wait. FIreball! While our chef was skilled at cooking the food on the teppan grill, the overall service from other staff members was lacking. We experienced long waits for drink refills and had to remind servers multiple times about our requests. The thing that killed me though, is that the restaurant seemed segregated. The experience at Benihana is still fun to get to see a show while your food is cooked. As for the food I have to say this was the worst experience I've had at this location. The Chef put way more soy sauce and butter than I've ever had on the food before. The garlic butter and butter made everything way too greasy and rich and the excessive soy sauce made it so salty I was very thirsty. After eating here I got a bad headache from the excess salt so I suggest if you're sensitive to salt to be very careful here or ask for your food to be cooked differently. If I return I'm definitely requesting less soy sauce and butter because I think it was a weeks amount of sodium in this meal. read more

Is there a way to give less than a star?? My best friend's son's birthday was this evening and we had a 6 p.m. reservation. We were not seated until almost 7:00. No one even came to our table until 7:15 to ask us about our drinks. Which took them until after 7:30 to bring us. Little by little the restaurant was emptying out because no one was being served. We finally up and left at 7:50 because there was no chef in sight. As we were walking out, another group at a different table said they were waiting two hours to be served.
