Mikata is a fantastic spot for Sushi and Japanese cuisine. While in Atlanta I was craving sushi and Mikata was walking distance from my hotel so a few friends and I decided to give it a try. Boy are we glad we did! The atmosphere is upscale and modern, with elegant decor and tall ceilings with tons of light. The plating and silverware is also spot on. I ordered a tako nigiri and a Mikata sushi tower with spicy tuna and real crab in it. The presentation was gorgeous and the dishes tasted as good as it looked. I've visited Mikata Sushi twice now, about two months apart, and I have quite a few thoughts! There were definitely some highlights, but a few things left me underwhelmed. Let's get into it! Yellowtail - 6/10 If you know me, you know yellowtail is MY FISH! I absolutely love yellowtail, and honestly, I enjoy it in just about any presentation. However, something about this one was a little off for me. The cuts were noticeably thicker than what I typically prefer. The flavor was there, but the overall appearance and color of the fish didn't give me the same quality impression I've gotten from other yellowtail experiences. What makes this more interesting is that I ordered it on BOTH visits, and unfortunately, I had the same impression each time. I wanted to love it because yellowtail is easily one of my favorite fish, but it just wasn't giving what I'm used to. Steak Fried Rice - 7/10 WOWWW! This was probably the biggest surprise of the entire experience. This is some of the best fried rice I've had in a WHILEEEE! The flavor profiles were EVERYTHING. I could actually taste the individual ingredients, but somehow everything came together beautifully. You know when a song comes on and every single beat hits exactly where it's supposed to? That's how this fried rice tasted! Now, why the 7/10 instead of higher? THE YUM YUM SAUCE. I honestly feel like it did more harm than good. The sauce had more of a mayonnaise-like taste, and I felt it took away from what was already really good fried rice. I wish I had ordered it without the sauce the first time around. I actually regret not getting it on my first visit, but I'm so happy I finally tried it on my second! Shrimp Tempura - 5/10 This one was pretty forgettable. The shrimp was very crispy, which I appreciated, but the ponzu sauce it came with threw off the overall flavor for me. Something about the combination just didn't quite come together. The flavor wasn't fully there, and while it wasn't necessarily a bad dish, it definitely wasn't something I'd go back specifically to order. Nothing particularly memorable. Margarita Roll - 10/10 YESSSSS! NOW THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! As a YELLOWTAIL LOVER, this roll understood the assignment! This is a raw roll, and the fish was SO flavorful. Everything about this roll worked for me. The flavor, the overall experience, just everything! I ordered this on BOTH visits, and both times it delivered. That's how you know it's good when you come back and immediately order the same thing again. Easily my favorite item at Mikata. If I returned, this would absolutely be on my order again. My Spending First Visit: * Margarita Roll * Yellowtail * Total: $50 Second Visit: * Shrimp Tempura * Yellowtail * Steak Fried Rice * Margarita Roll * Total: $80 Service & Overall Experience - 6/10 Now, let's talk about service because this definitely impacted my overall experience. First Visit: I'd honestly give the service a 0/10. My waiter took an extremely long time to bring out my dishes, and my yellowtail was slightly warm by the time it arrived. Second Visit: I sat at the sushi bar, and I believe one of the managers assisted me. The difference was noticeable! Not necessarily because he was a manager, but because he was attentive. You can literally see the food coming out on the sushi bar, and he actually took the time to pay attention and make sure my dishes made it to me. During my first visit, my waiter would see food come out, walk right past it without saying anything, and head back into the kitchen. I noticed that same lack of attentiveness again during my second visit. It wasn't a matter of the restaurant being too busy; it was a matter of someone taking the time to pay attention to their customers and the food coming out. I really appreciated the assistance during my second visit because it made everything move much faster. Final Thoughts Overall, I'd give Mikata a 6/10. The Margarita Roll was a 10/10 experience, and the steak fried rice was a pleasant surprise. However, the yellowtail consistency and service definitely brought down my overall rating. Would I return? Possibly! But I already know exactly what I'm ordering: that Margarita Roll! read more

So, I was craving Sashimi/Sushi. Who am I kidding? I'm always craving it. No different when I was in Dunwoody last week. Found it online. Thanks Yelp. And there I was. Can't speak for parking as I walked over. You'll have to call and ask or drive around and check it out for yourself. I didn't make a reservation but as busy as it got, I'd recommend it just in case. I sat at the Sushi bar - there's also a bar - but if you want a table - that's where it got busy, then busier when I finished up and left. Service was great! Sitting at the Sushi bar, the crew behind the counter was busy but the wait staff checked up on me like I was a VIP. I didn't even need to ask - someone was there to follow up. Not hovering. Just great timing. They do not offer Sashimi sets thus what you see in the pics I posted. Not complaining - I got my fix later in the week. But enjoyed the meal from appetizer, to dessert and the drinks in-between. I especially enjoyed the Yellowtail Jalapeno - nice punch of flavor - same for the Crab Sunomono. The Margarita Roll had a little kick - not spicy for me but if you're sensitive to spicy heat - might want to avoid. Grabbed the Banana Tempura for dessert. Figured it would pair well with the Banana Bread Old Fashioned. It didn't. Little to strong for it. That's on me. But enjoyed the separately. Next time I'd order something that doesn't overpower the dessert. But next time I might just say it's two desserts - the second being of a liquid variety. Anyway, would I go back? We had a reservation for a Friday night, and I highly recommend doing so. They were communicative with the reservation, however the address they sent for us to park at was incorrect so that took some problem solving - we felt like $4 to park for 2 hours was fair. The inside of the space felt elevated but comfortable, the hostess greeted us warmly and sat us promptly. The food was to die for. We loved it all and would order everything again - cocktails included! So you may ask, why the 3 stars and truly it was the service. They're not allergy friendly despite asking about allergies when creating reservation. At one point our waiter said "let's leave that off, there's a lot of ingredients in there you probably can't have it". But then served something else with the same sauce on it. He truthfully just had no idea and was uninterested in asking the chef - and when I'm paying $135 for 2 people that's pretty ridiculous. He forgot to put part of our order in and had to be asked if it was coming. We sat at the table 30 minutes before he even took our food order. It appeared he was the only person serving majority of the tables so I'm empathetic, but I hope the restaurant does better. read more

Girls' night approved! The place feels modern with its dark toned decor and ambient lighting (while still being well-lit). We were seated on the second floor and our server handled our party of 6 with ease. The sake list is very extensive, and I really enjoyed the few that I tried. What's more, the glassware they use to keep the sake cool was...COOL (check the pictures, but you should order some and see for yourself)! My friend and I dined here for lunch recently and really enjoyed it. It's located near perimeter mall in a building on 1111 Hammond drive. Parking is available in the garage and the restaurant validates parking for up to 2 hours. The restaurant was aesthetically pleasing. They have lots of options on their menu including sushi and hibachi. To start, I ordered the Japanese slipper which contains gin and midori. The drink was very pleasant. Initially, I wasn't going to order sushi, but I saw how good it looked arriving to other tables nearby. I decided on the NY strip roll and it was delicious. I also ordered the filet and scallop hibachi. The steak was very tender and everything was good overall. Although it's a bit on the pricier side (even for lunch), I'd absolutely return. Mikata is a good addition to the perimeter area; in proximity to perimeter mall, but not on the congested Ashford Dunwoody row of businesses. Located on Hammind Drive, Mikata offers two hours of complementary parking for customers in underground garage. Signage from the garage to the restaurant could be better, but allowed me to get my steps in and see other businesses in route. The ambience is well thought regarding decor and use of space. Did not notice the upper dining area, that accommodates about 30 people, until I was exiting the building. The lower area offered a combination of tables and booths and appeared sufficient for lunch crowds. Entry also had a full bar And sushi preparation station in proximity. I enjoyed my meal of a rainbow roll and Ika salad. The salad consisted of seared octopus and vegetables accompanied by a Ponzu dressing. I requested ginger dressing as that is my preferred salad topping. It was delicious; flavorful and tender. The rainbow roll was also good and consisted of salmon, yellowtail, tuna, snapper, and ono. It was garnished with a beautiful flower. I would have like the option for brown rice in my sushi, but unfortunately that option is becoming more and more rare. Hibachi offerings are also available for those who prefer well cooked food. The portion sizes were optimal as the person I dined with was satisfied with the child size. As mentioned there is a full bar and the drink menu was extensive. Opted for a non-alcoholic beverage during my lunch visit and it was refreshing. The arnold palmer combination of my companion did not measure up to usual standards, even after two attempts to correct. Overall, a recommended dining location for those in proximity. We stopped by Mikata for the first time recently. Located in the same complex as the Statefarm headquarters, things were very quiet when we arrived. (Around 6pm on a Saturday.) We were seated promptly. Ambience is a little clubby, with moody lighting and lively music. The menu has a variety of "standard" American style sushi rolls, some specialty rolls, and a selection of Nigiri. There was also a hibachi section, which we didn't have the chance to try. The quality of the food was good - I'm always a little skeptical of Sea Urchin this far from the sea, but it was quite delicious. The rest of the nigiri was also solid. That said, I found the price to be somewhat high for what you were getting. (Within striking range of omakase options in this area, and it's not on that level.) Sake selection was limited, but the sake that was on offer was good. Weirdly there was a more robust standard wine list. Service was friendly, but harried. We had a three course meal, a bottle of sake, and tea within 50 minutes. It was a very very rushed experience. I came here on a Thursday night with a friend to catch up over drinks and sushi. I'd never been to this restaurant before so was excited to try it. Our server was really nice and attentive. She walked us through the menu and made sure we were hydrated. I ordered the Snow White roll and the crawfish dynamite roll. Both are cooked rolls, so if you don't like raw these are the rolls for you. They were both delicious but I did prefer the crawfish dynamite roll better. The crawfish dynamite roll is a bit messy but there are eight sushi rolls underneath the mound of awesome flavors that consists of crawfish, scallop and crab mix with spicy mayo, eel sauce and scallions. It's definitely a winner. The Snow White roll was more reserved in its appearance but tasty as well. It reminded me of the Snow White roll I loved at a restaurant called Blue Sushi in Kansas City. After years of not liking hibachi from most places I found a neighborhood gem! As you walk in you'll transport into a luxurious feel. The host/hostess were very nice and welcoming. I sat at the bar area because it was just me without a reservation. The bartender was beyond nice and very sociable but not overbearing. The New york strip roll had seared steak that was still a bit rare and very tender. It melded so well with spicy crab, avacado, and eel sauce. My guy got the habachi option with scallops, filet mingion, and fried rice. The protiens were cooked nicely, although the steak could have been a bit more rare it was still tender. The fried rice was flavorful. My virgin passion fruit mojito was lacking a bit. For some reason, they use a mix for the virgin instead of fresh limes. They gave me extra club soda, which helped make it taste a bit better. The service was attentive and food came out in a timely manner. They have two family sized restrooms, but I do wish they didn't have such strong fragrance inside, I could barely breathe in there. We arrived and were quickly seated in an almost full area. Our server was responsive and willing to please. The rolls we selected (lemongrass and the jalapeño) were fresh and tasty. With the ginger salad, these were enough for a light dinner. The cons - the noise level was much too loud for us and the place was not even filled. The lemongrass roll did not have lemongrass but a preserved lemon slice in the mix. Still was an interesting combo but I was expecting a lemongrass taste. The ginger dressing on the salad was heavy handed on the soy sauce, masking any ginger taste (I have fresh ginger every morning and love the taste!) I may come back during off hours and eat at the sushi bar which is a bit away from the crowd, maybe try other offerings. Hopefully, it will be a better experience. read more

For being brand new I thought this place was great! Our waiter in particular (Logan) was amazing, hilarious, super helpful and overall super great waiter. They have a downstairs seating, with beautiful decor and lights, then they have a more intimate upstairs that is a great little get away and perfect for people watching. They have both a lunch menu and a dinner menu, i think they are overall pretty similar but the lunch prices might be a little cheaper. But this place has some interesting cocktails! It give a nice bar vibe and it is super fun, we enjoyed our cocktails with our food and had a great date trying this new place. My only thing is they don't offer a GF soy sauce! I never received the second cocktail so asked them to please take off the bill, as well as the never-received salad. But the servers are all nice and the front of house is friendly. This had to be some of the best hibachi i've ever had. My boyfriend and I ordered sushi and hibachi and both were perfection. The sushi was fresh and soft, the rice wasn't overcooked (which is always a plus). The hibachi, which was the star of the show was amazing. The rice had a smoked taste and was cooked perfectly, while my shrimp and chicken were seasoned and cooked well also. My boyfriend and I also ordered soup instead of a salad to go with our hibachi and.. let me say it was the best miso soup i've ever had. It had tofu and other spices and veggies in it that really set it off and made it so different. Our service was quick and efficient. Our server was so kind and accommodating and matched all our needs with a big smile. The environment and scenery of the restaurant was just an added bonus.
