    Snow Patrol Concert, March 2007

** 3.5 ** I have to admit it makes me giggle that AU's Bender Arena has a page on Yelp. As an alum of AU, I have been here many times and Bender has served me for a wide variety of events. These include: Sporting Events: AU Basketball - (and we made it to the NCAA Tourney this year!), AU Volleyball, AU Swimming, Gym and Pool Facilities Concerts: Bob Dylan, The Format/Jimmy Eat World, Ben Folds, Ok Go!/Snow Patrol Sports: IM Indoor Soccer and IM Volleyball Speakers: Mikhail Gorbachev, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Barack Obama, John Glenn - to name a few. AU's graduation ceremonies are also held in Bender. Complaints - Acoustics are terrible. Kinda stuffy at times - especially when there's a high volume of people. I know it's a gym - but some of the seats are REALLY uncomfortable. Likes - Generally clean overall - including the bathrooms. Cheap food during sporting events. Spacious. Good facilities for working out/gym usage though not enough machines. For a university's sporting facilities, Bender is great. For concerts, meh...it's nice that it can hold a lot of people but it's really not the best venue.

Stony Brook fans who were originally sitting behind the Stony Brook bench, but got kicked out for cheering too loud for their team.

I never got a job related to my degree and the school did not do anything to help me get a job. Their Career Center is useless. I have never known anyone who got a paying job through the American University Career Center. The Professors I had were also useless. Many of them teach directly from antiquated text books. They do not teach you any technology of any kind and they never taught us any programs that you would need to know for employment purposes. You take an Economics class and they do not teach you how to use econometric software programs. Their curriculum is something out of the 1960s. This school has had several large scandals over the years with school Presidents. Google Richard Berendzen and you can read about his disgusting behavior. The school would not fire him. He was allowed to keep his job as a professor at the school. Also Google Benjamin Ladner. He was another school President.

I dreaded the mile-and-a-half-long hike to the always late red line, especially when I had to dress in hard shoes and a suit for my seminar. Everyday I thought about withdrawing from the program and flying back to the Sucka Free. I stayed with it though, and it paid off. The International Trade Seminar ended up being a fun program. Not academically challenging per se, but it was an experience that few people get to have, even without taking the option to study in China. The cool thing was that my class was mostly older, foreign students, who all had a passion for what they did. Going to class was never boring because the teacher was engaging, and the all students participated and debated in almost every class. Though class was fun, we only had it twice a week, the rest of the time was spent out in the field, going to different organizations and talking to stately/important/noteworthy people. We sat in at Senate hearings, talked to executives from top-rated investment houses, went to the Fed (sat in Bernanke's chair), attended seminars at the World Bank and IMF, and even went to China (or at least the Chinese Embassy). Our class even went to New York and toured the Nymex and the NYSE. Towards the end of the program, I moved with my girlfriend from Bethesda to an apartment closer to school (on the same block as the zoo in Woodley Park). It with this newfound neighborhood and access to transportation did we get deeper appreciation of the city. In retrospect, the program was great. Logistically speaking, it was hard at first since the transportation situation was so bad in the suburbs (you really need a car in Bethesda). Otherwise, the program was great. Back at school and work in SF, I feel like a more experienced and more well-rounded person. My 6 months in DC really flew by, and I almost kind of miss it now. If you are thinking about studying abroad, but don't want to spend too much time/money living overseas, check DC out. Its especially good if you are interested in trade, politics, law, or economics. The Semester Program at AU, heres your hard earned "5".

The museum hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary art from around the world, and it was larger than I expected (three floors). The highlights when we visited were an exhibit on Aboriginal Australian bark painting, an exhibit of the works of two WWII photojournalists, and an exhibit of artists who are past winners of the Trawick Prize (recognizing and supporting DC, MD, and VA artists since its creation in 2002). The museum is free to visit and has a parking garage below which is free on weekends. This is not your typical art museum, but that's kind of what made it great to visit today. It pushed me out of my art comfort zone and exposed me to some new artists! Definitely visit if you're in the area and love an art experience.

If you use the museum garage on Sundays, it is free. The space is large. There are currently three exhibits in the museum. There is also a lovely sculpture garden. It is wonderful sitting outside in the sun. The garden has a wonderful floral scent. The views take you out of DC for a minute. The staff members are nice. There are handouts or brochures on each exhibit. You can also see the works on line. The artists sometimes give Q & A sessions about their paintings or photographs. It would be easy to visit several times a month. You don't have to be a student to appreciate the arts. You don't have to take the steps. There are elevators. You will want to walk outside to see the sculpture displays. The current exhibits are: Val Lewton: From Hollywood to Breezewood, States of Mind: Cuba and North Korea and Fred Kellogg: Works in oil and water. They were all unique and interesting. The works are on display until August 13th and then new projects will be shown. It is worth a visit, or ten.
