I have been going to Benchmark for years. Last night I went out to dinner with my friends, who are local special education teachers, and our husbands. We have all known each other for years, and taught together in SB county. Needless to say, we were excited to sit down, catch up, and enjoy a meal and a drink.
Food ordering was uneventful and quick. We got a nice booth near the back, and started to catch up.
When our drinks arrived, they brought her a shot of tequila instead of the cocktail she had ordered. They also forgot her husband's beer that he had paid for. My friend politely informed our server that the wrong drink had been brought, and asked if they could bring her the correct drink. They asked what drink it was, and she said she had ordered a well cocktail and that the bartender had offered to make her a drink that they had on the menu. My friend said it sounded nice. The server was instantly hostile, and said he did not know the drink menu and wasn't a bartender. He indicated he could not correct the mistake since my friend could not name the drink. (Even though she said it was just the standard cocktail on the drink menu.) He asked, very rudely and confrontationally, if she would like a margarita. She said that was fine. He left and left the shot on the table.
Our whole table was taken aback by how rude he was. My friend is a talented, friendly, and polite person. She exhibited all of those traits in this interaction. My friend had tears in her eyes, and seemed very shaken up. She took the shot since she had assumed they had left it for her. She was also trying not to cry.
Another server came, and she brought my friend a margarita, which we later figured out was virgin. She then rudely said to my friend here's your drink. By the way we are charging you for the shot.
At this point, my other friend said that this is not appropriate, and that our service has been rude. She asked why my friend was being charged for the wrong drink that was left at the table. There was no apology or explanation given, and she said I'll talk to the other server.
At this point my friend's, who had received rude service, husband realized no one had brought him his drink. He went up to the counter, and was apologized to and received a free drink token plus his beer.
Please note, he is white, and my friend is Hispanic. Our whole party, including my friend, believed that she received terrible service due to the color of her skin. The rest of us were treated well, and given good drinks and service. (My other friend, who also ordered a margarita, noticed that his drink tasted completely different from my friends.)
This situation was so appalling, I will never go back to this restaurant, despite being a regular customer since it opened. Please do better Benchmark. This is not the way people should be treated. read more
