She's on point with design options and always does amazing work for me. I've added a few works of art she's framed. I've worked with the whole crew in the frame department, and everyone is awesome. The store is huge with wide, roomy aisles. The fabric selection is good and fabrics are reasonably priced. They carry novelty fabrics that I have not seen elsewhere. The selection of batiks was very good. Staff was great. read more

As I was looking around in the paper and stickers area, I got out my reusable bag and filled it with my picks of merchandise that I was going to buy. At the register the cashier lady started off being a little snarky with me. Hmmm? Odd! I went ahead and took out items from my reusable bag, placed them on the counter while the cashier scanned a few of the items. She suddenly stopped scanning, took a big sigh and just stared at me seemingly irritated while I emptied the rest of the items onto the counter. She then states that I shouldn't use my reusable bag to put items in while shopping because someone might think I'm stealing. Since it NEVER occurred to me because I would NEVER do such a thing, her statement didn't really resonate with me at that moment. Not until a security guard shows up, along with another employee, and said, "... she's paying ...," that I started to get uncomfortable. They too just stood there staring at me in that irritated tone! To be honest, I didn't put two and two together until later. I thought the security guard and the employee were talking about some other incident that happened while I was looking around! Surely they weren't directing their suspicions and awful behavior on me!! Like many of us these days, I use my reusable bag as a shopping cart/basket all the time, and in multiple other stores, and I have never been treated with irritation and suspicion of stealing like I was treated at Ben Franklin. i will never shop here again. it is astoundingly clear to me that they mistreat their employees. i was here a week or so ago and witnessed what seemed like a manager being very passive aggressive to one of the workers (though it could have been another manager, i am not sure. not good either way). I WILL NOT SUPPORT A BUSINESS THAT IS ABUSIVE TO THEIR TEAM. highly unprofessional and overall just a disgusting way to walk around the world. i sincerely hope the workers consider taking legal action if this type of behavior continues. i have already convinced my friends and family to stop shopping here. read more

For the last 25 years, I have always had a pleasant experience shopping here, taking classes, getting good advice for projects. A couple of months ago, I took a portrait to the framing department and decided on custom framing. The man who helped me was cordial and helpful. I dropped the portrait off on 11/16 and was given a potential pick up date of 12/22 with the understanding it might be a few days later than the 22nd. I figured the holidays were a busy time and I understood. When I checked on 12/22 it was not ready and I told the staff that I would just wait for a call. After two weeks of silence, I decided to call to check on progress. The woman on the other end of the line could not find my project and was not friendly on the phone. It was still not ready. A week later I stopped by and was told it is not finished. Another customer was getting a photo framed for a memorial service and they said her framed photo would be ready in four days. After hearing this, I explained to the staff that the portrait was of my daughter and her partner and their stillborn baby and I didn't know that I could get it rushed. A young man apologized and said it would be finished that same day. I never got a phone call. When I stopped in again on the 15th it was finally finished. It was a simple frame with no matting. It looks fine. There was sticky stuff on the frame that I had to wash off. I received no apology or nicety for the wait and confusion. It took almost 9 weeks and $200. to frame an 8x10 portrait. The worst part was the lack of friendliness and quality customer service. I will definitely use a different business for framing in the future. read more

Great service from a locally owned business. Despite being considered a "non-essential" business during the pandemic, this store would do business from 12 noon to 5 pm each day if you phoned them to place an order for curbside pickup. I couldn't get through on any of the four phone lines so used the web contact form and received a response almost immediately. I was needing to make an exchange, and when I arrived outside the store, I just texted a number they'd given to me, rolled down my car window, and was done in less than five minutes. Really appreciated being able to keep working on our project. Regarding the reviewer in January who was angry about not being able to make a return: this store is NOT owned by Jeff Bezos, a billionaire who can afford to take back opened, used goods that can't be sold again. It's not Ben Franklin's fault that the reviewer bought the wrong product for an application, and in trying it out, made it so it could not be re-sold. Why should the store eat the cost of your poor judgement? (By the way, the reason it wouldn't stick is because it looks like you were putting it on wood, a porous surface. If that was a wall, very little sticks to paint, which often isn't smooth, either. Had you been applying it to glass or metal, it would have worked, I'm sure.) We are lucky to have this Ben Franklin in our town. Their staff keeps up with all the latest trends in crafts, paper arts, yarn and fabric goods, and curates an excellent selection of materials. read more

This is sort of embarrassing, but, I had the unfortunate experience of facing a VERY RUDE cashier, which later cascaded to some other problems. At checkout, I had many things, and the cashier unjustifiably criticized me. I thought she was being sarcastic or witty at first, as she was commenting on the amount of items, so I joked about this as well. The problem was she was just bring rude. She then proceeded to have a full on conversation with her coworkers about each item in my cart. This is like SNL, Target lady type of stuff, but she was authentically being rude. Next part of this, that makes things compounded for me, is that my check ended up NOT clearing. I immediately called the store and spoke to the manager Sara, and came up with a friendly agreement to resolve the issue, which made the other problem kind of minimal in comparison, because Sara was understanding and helpful. A few days later, my check hit my account earlier than expected for me to cover the amount, which was against my resolution with the manager as per our discussion, so I called the store back to speak to the store owner. The store owner was incapable. He immediately began ridiculing me, saying that I stole merchandise from his store, and basically was unwilling to renegotiate the contract. I asked him to run the check again on a specific date, where I knew the balance would be cleared and he continued to acuse me. I think things like this happen to a lot people, where a check bounces on accident and I was thinking I could resolve the matter amicably, unfortunately I felt very bad and the matter escalated. The owner called the police, GVPD. This is his right to do so, however, the check was for under 300.00 and I had attempted twice already to resolve the contract. So basically, I am not going to shop here again. I have lived her over 20 years, have taken art classes here, bought notions for a major sewing project here last year, have used their custom frame shop, and spent many hundreds of dollars, never had any issues with my payment methods or bad service. read more

Great & humming store with friendly and helpful staff. They have an excellent stocked fabric/quilting zone with unusual and creative fabrics. The staff will ask if you need help but does not hover if you don't. I found two fabrics brands I had never seen in my statewide search & was thrilled at the find. Prices were no higher or lower, though I did get one on sale. Regret: No time to look at the rest of the place, but if you do any other textile work, looks good. Yay! read more

While they do carry a nice selection of unfinished wood projects and some very pretty fabrics, it seems like being pretty much the only game in town doesn't yield the best service. Multiple times I've purchased a length of fabric that has an obvious fold on the bolt or torn edge and they will only cut the exact length asked for. The end result is paying for 36 inches but getting home and only having 33 usable. For the most part everyone there is nice and have some good suggestions and guidance, but it's quite annoying to try and carry any of that out when you're getting short changed on the supplies. read more

I regret the day I ever walked through Ben Franklin's doors. That same day I quit Target cold turkey and turned into a full blown crafty head case. Now Ben Franklin takes ALL of my money, without remorse, I might add. Thread, ribbon, fabric, paint, canvases that are a l w a y s on sale, ink, buttons, needles...... need I go on? Ben Franklin = Crack Ben Franklin is to me as crack is to Amy Winehouse. Holy crap... this place has a better yarn/needle selection than the JoAnn's superstore by my house in Concord. They carry upscale brands of yarn (I spotted Mini Mochi, swear to dog), every size and type of Clover/Takumi knitting needle, as well as tons of books and odd notions, including acid dyes. Needle felters will also be pleased by the hand-dyed roving, small roving samples, needles, etc. It was like an LYS packed into... a Ben Franklin. There's also what I'd call a "gem cave" as they stocked the walls and tables of a good twelve by ten foot space with beads and stones. Seriously, 270 degrees of beady goodness. I was simply blown away by the selection here. Service was great too, as one girl asked to help us, and others put out that generally friendly air that puts you at ease if you need to ask for help with anything. And yes, I will be hitting this place up every time I visit my grandparents now... JoAnn's is dead to me! P.S. I rated moderate because although I saw few sales, the prices of the items I was familiar with were very competitive. read more

I love this store! I much prefer to drive up from Marysville, than have to waste my time wondering around the 2 chain craft stores in Yuba City. I can literally spend hours in Ben Franklin, getting everything I need for the projects already in the works and getting inspired for more (way too much more)! I thought the customer service was fantastic. On two occasions, I would casually say to my daughter, "Hmm... I wonder where the ______ is..." and a store employee overheard and offered help. That's unheard of! And for those who don't know, it's not just crafts. They also have a huge art supply department with real art supplies for real artists. And framing. And fabric. And yarn for days. So yeah, Ben Franklin is awesome. Just ask the people who price their merchandise. It's not cheap and as far as I can tell, coupons are not their thing. read more

Amazing scrap booking selection. It may be small in space but they have everything you could possibly need! Stickers, rubons, ribbon by the foot, embellishments, card stock, foam, and tons of pens! They have a lot of space for scrapbooks but their selection was minimal when I went in. They allow you to use their die cut machine with paper you buy in the store, they may not have a ton like some Sacramento stores but its free and they do have a lot of useful patterns. You can use fabric, foam, vellum or paper on their machine too! Staff is helpful even when they are busy. I go here every time I'm up in grass valley because the employees as well at the other shoppers are extremely nice. They also are able and willing to order something special in for you. They are very good about calling you when it comes in too! They're prices are identical to specialty scrapbook stores as well as craft stores. They also do not take out of town checks, no problem for anyone with credit or debit, but the lady in front of me wasn't able to pay. read more

When I was a kid growing up here, I always thought that Ben Franklin was the best craft store ever. Unfortunately, however, trying to shop there as an adult has made me realize how wrong I was. I'm sure if you are just looking for casual fun crafting stuff it can be great, but if you are looking for anything specific, especially related to sewing, Ben Franklin will be a frustrating waste of time. The staff is always very kind, pleasant, and helpful (hence the two-star review instead of one. That is entirely thanks to the staff), the store itself though is consistently out of stock of very basic things such as zippers and lace. I understand that they do not claim to be a sewing store, but being the only craft store in town I suppose I was just expecting them to provide at least the very basics needed to complete a project. In the future maybe that will change, I know I would definitely shop there much more if they offered more than quilting supplies and I doubt I am the only person who sews in this town. The only other thing I personally think could be improved is there website, which has to be unfinished. I can not believe that any functioning store would honestly think that that website is in any way adequate. First of all, the grey is soulless and depressing. Second when you scroll over the departments page it gives you a list of the departments available in the store. Thats great, the problem though is that when you click on one all it tells you is that the department does in fact exist. That much was obvious when you saw it listed, the point of a website is to tell you what is sold in each department. Ben Franklins website fails to do that. It's kind of infuriating when you are short on time and desperately need to know if they even sell something before driving all the way to the store. I really hope that they increase their fabric selection at some point since the nearest actual fabric store is in Sacramento. read more

Their selection is phenomenal. Every time I walk in I have been greeted and asked if I needed help, and that is "great". I love their selection of yarn, best on selection. I would have bought a ton of yarn but I had already ordered $300+ of yarns online before ever stepping foot into this store. Maybe in the future I will buy yarn here, but for now I only purchased some missing yarn color, I didn't have enough to finish some of my projects. I crochet but this place makes me want to learn to knit, with all the pattern and samples they have. We shall see what the future holds. Update: I hardly ever get around to purchasing yarn here because it's always about 20-50% cheaper online. I did however went in and purchased a yarn winder & when I asked for help the lady gave me the cheapest one they carry. When I asked, "is this the only one you carry?" She answered ... "No but other one is (very expensive) so I don't think you'll want that one". Really? What was it about me that looked as if I could not afford it? Was it my tattoos? or my skin color? Actually I (can) afford it, but why pay more ?... I went ahead and purchased the one she recommended, then I got home and look online and I realized I paid (double the price) at Ben Franklin. I don't think I will ever go back. I was so stoked about finding this store, but I really don't appreciate the way I was treated or they way this store over charges. I want to shop locally. I really do. But local businesses so often choose to treat customers adversarily in ways that Amazon would never think of. I purchased some stick on magnetic tape at Ben Franklin located in Grass Valley. It failed the first day - would not stick to the wall even when bearing no weight. This was not an expensive purchase, but the manager at Ben Franklin absolutely refused to accept a return. He was confrontational and rude. "I'm sorry, sir, we did not manufacture this product" as opposed to Amazon's 100%, no questions asked, postpaid return policy. There are a lot of reasons to not love Amazon. However, until local businesses learn to treat customers with the same respect and responsiveness as Amazon, they are going to continue to get killed. Last night I was in need of some safety pins; quilters use them for basting their quilts. Anyway I turned to my local craft store in town; Ben Franklin. I expected to run in buy the pins and leave. That's not what happened. I went to the fabric/quilting department and met up with a charming employee by the name of Francis. This gal was a wealth of information. I learned more from her during our visit than you could imagine. I can't tell you how nice my experience was. I've been there many times to buy fabric and other quilting supplies. They have an enormous amount of fabric to choose from and all the other goodies a Quilter would need. Two, no.... 10 thumbs up for Ben Franklin and their helpful staff. The organization of the store was easy to navigate and it even appeared that they were having some kind of crafting event near the sewing area!
