Buyer beware! I can't actually review the $40 class that the artist cancelled on myself and my two friends. But I can attest that she will not issue you the refund you have in writing that was agreed to unless you repeatedly message her. The class was cancelled on 2/22/25, here we are on 3/18/25 and I'm messaging again to get a refund. The art classes may be wonderful. I will never go there however since it took this long to get a refund. I had to message rather aggressively to get my money back. This is absolutely appalling business practices! read more

This summer my little boy and I attended a Fairy House class at The Artist Workshop. We paid $50 and my son spent 2 hours building a clay fairy house he was very proud of. We were told we would be notified when our houses were done, it was estimated it would be about 2 weeks. Weeks passed and then months. I contacted my friend who also attended with her daughter- they also had not received any word about the finished houses. My friend called and was told by the owner a bunch of excuses about the kiln being broken and various unforeseen circumstances but was assured the fairy houses would be available soon. Fast forward to a few weeks later and the shop is closed down and empty. No contact from anyone from this business. Where is my childs fairy house that he worked so hard making? If there is no finished house, where is my refund? This place was quick to take my $50 payment for the class and never made any attempt to reach out and explain anything that may have happened. There were many many kids at this class and I can only imagine they made a lot of money that day. So upsetting to see a business scam children. read more

I wanted to do something special with my niece. She's a crafty 9-year old. I was really excited. The Artist Workshop seemed perfect. Unfortunately, Jeannie, the owner, explained that she wouldn't be open for painting tomorrow, but she can and does make take-home custom pottery painting kits. She offered to meet me at the store, and when scheduling got tricky, she offered to send me photos of the ceramic pieces we'd be most interested in. She sent me several great options, and offered to go back in the morning to send more if needed. In the end, we didn't opt to do take-home painting this time. (My niece wanted time out of the house with me, away from the fam, and it will be too hot to paint at the park.) But I had to leave a review anyhow. This level of customer service in rare and beautiful. This business deserves all the stars I have to give. Highly recommend. read more

We had so much fun at AW! I made a piggy bank with my niece and laughed all day. All in all we spent like 2 hours making ceramics, painting pictures and taking pictures of the fun. I am going to try out the camps next! Lovely addition to Grass Valley! read more

Loved this place!! I took my 2 year old son today for the first time to make a Father's day gift for my husband. We were greeted immediately by the sweetest girl, Katie. She helped us every step of the way, with a smile. We made a beautiful hand painted (by my 2 year old) coffee cup, and I know it will be a priceless gift cherished by my husband forever. Margo has brought a wonderful new business to town and we've been fans since it opened. I have a card on file for my youngest to drop in anytime and play for an hour (she's 2.5) and my oldest and I go here often to do paint-your-own pottery projects. I also have been to a ladies' night here where we brought our own snacks and even a bottle of wine and tried our hand at stamp carving. Very fun! I love that the Artist Workshop has something for every age and that Margo is always dreaming up new projects and evolving the business. There's also a facebook page for the business which I find useful for learning about summer camps and new projects. read more

My husband and I dropped into The Artist Workshop a few days ago while visiting downtown Grass Valley. We really enjoyed the process of picking our project (we decided to paint a garden gnome). I'm currently nine months pregnant so it was nice to find a project that we could do together. The owner was running the shop that day. It was nice to meet her and she was very helpful. She has set up such a special little shop in Grass Valley. I can't wait for my daughter to get to the age where I can bring her in to paint! I love taking my daughters (ages 5 and 10 here) for Paint Your Own Pottery. They have both made really cute things and had a great time. Very reasonably priced too. I also really love that they offer a Parent's Night Out. My kiddos have a great time while I get a date with my hubby. Definitely a win-win. If you haven't been here yet, it's a great place to take the kids, especially on rainy days (or really hot summer days!). Margo is really sweet and helpful too. read more

I LOVE this place! Our family cannot get enough. We have been to a party here and all the kids and parents had a blast. Margo kept the party going with lots of activities that kept the ten 2 year olds busy. I have also attended adult classes here and they are so much fun! Margo is wonderful at instruction and helping hash out ideas. There are always new products coming in it seems, whether a pyop( paint your own pottery) or mosiac or other new cool thing she has found. The prices are really reasonable for what you get and the fun you enjoy in creating. We also have taken our 2 year old to her toddler class and just drop in also. He has a lot of fun and comes away with cute projects and usually paint all over which means he really enjoyed himself (and I didn't have to clean up!) read more

I can see where this might be good for older kids. But I went with my 5 year old on a rainy day during their drop in hour. The owner was not friendly at all and basically said that my son could do any art that he wanted without even giving some guidance. It was our first time there and so I really didn't know what they offered. My son kind of made his way around the different stations. Painted a cardboard display they had, made a paper ornament since it was around Christmas. But No guidance whatsoever from the owner. If you are going to run a Child's art shop maybe have some ideas on projects a 5 year old can accomplish. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is that I can see it would be good for those older kids (ages 9+) who are more artistic. Also it is pretty expensive. read more

My kids and I (5 and 3) love the Artist Workshop. We've made ceramic handprint mugs and dreamcatchers and have just played around painting the huge cardboard dinosaur skeleton and drawing pictures. I haven't done any workshops or camps, but I love the flexibility of the open studio time, and all of the great supplies. We love Margo too -- she is there to help if we need it, and she gives us space to create if we want to do it on our own. So glad to have the Studio in our town! read more

It it great to take the kids in my family here to create and explore. The youngest love mixing colors on the Dino and wall paper, the older ones make great gifts and receive helpful hints from Margo on "how to"...and did I mention no clean up! The glitter stops here. read more

The Artist Workshop and Margo (the owner) have been such a blessing to our community! She is so good with kids of all ages and is a real fountain of creativity! My son (4 years) never wants to leave and there is always an assortment of projects from which he can choose. We had his 4th birthday party at The Artist Workshop and it was fantastic, couldn't have been easier as the parent. Margo created a great Angry Birds themed craft and it truly delighted my son. Both my kids (4 and 2 1/2) and I enjoy coming to The Artist Workshop. We've done a bit of paint your own pottery, paint your own wooden toy, and open art. My kids love to paint the dinosaur in the back. I had my daughter's birthday party at their previous location in 2012, and now at their new location on Mill St. there is a private room in the back for parties/classes. We've received candles that were made at the workshop, which are fragrant and unique. I have been wanting to attend their Diva Night, which sounds fun and also get my kids involved in some of their camps. This is a great place for kids and adults. read more

Preschool art class is not worth the time or money. We researched the art class online, it looked like the kids would have paper posted in the walls that they could paint while they listened to music. Seemed like a great time for a preschooler. We paid online and showed up for the class. When we arrived the cashier gave me a hard time and asked that we pay again because she could see the reservation. I had to show her my email confirmation and bank statement to prove we paid and she still insisted we pay again. We didn't! And the the 'art' class. It was a tiny table with a few sheets of blank paper and some watercolors. The kids were given cotton balls. Needless to say, the kids were bored out of their mind instantly. And, the narrow room has floor to ceiling fragile ceramics, so good luck keeping your preschooler from breaking anything. I am sure this workshop provides better services for adults but for little kids- it really disappoints. read more
