Pro tips: - it is worth it. cover charge is not bad, you basically get to see 5-6 comedians. some nights are $25, but it was Sunday, so was $18. plus 2 drinks, so not an expensive night out. - definitely get a reservation. don't be those 20 people sadly standing in the standby section on the sidewalk, hoping to get an open spot. between the 3 jointly-owned clubs (incl Comedy Cellar & Fat Black Pussycat), they probably do 15 2-hour shows a night. You can always grab a resv for tomm, if tonight is full. - expect organization/chaos. they sort of have this down to a science. they line up the 200 people on the street out front, check ids, assign your table, get your phones into bags, etc. but once inside the system can break down a tad and long waits for drink service and your bill at the end, so be patient. - you will be forced to put your phone on silent and placed into a sealed pouch for the show. no exceptions. literally, your table # is written on the outside of the pouch. - be sure to check-in the minute you arrive, to get your pouch and then get in line (there is no one telling you this) - overall it's a fun time. comedians are talented, it's one of the best places in the country to see comedy and quite a NY experience.

I went to their Gyalhattan event, which was a mix of dancehall and hip hop, and the energy was great. The crowd is mixed but tends to skew younger, and it attracts people from a lot of different backgrounds. Visually, the space is very cool. The dark interior is covered with artistic, almost glow-in-the-dark designs that give the club a distinctive vibe. The staff has also always been pleasant and attentive, from the bouncers to coat check to the cleaning staff. Every interaction I've had there has been positive. Bathrooms are surprisingly clean too (and actually feel safe). There can sometimes be a line to get in, but it usually moves quickly. For ticketed events like Gyalhattan, prices are reasonable, and if you plan ahead you can sometimes grab early bird tickets for free. They have a good-sized dance floor, and DJs rotate throughout the night, with the best sets usually hitting after 1 a.m. There's also a lounge seating area if you want to take a break from the dance floor. Overall it's a fun spot with great music and a real dancing crowd. I'll definitely be back with friends.

THEY HAVE A HIDDEN RACIST POLICY that i was unaware of but heard about, but didnt believe it until i actually got there....I wanted to give club bembe a zero star but if i would have done that, i wouldnt have been able to place my review on yelp so i put in one star just so i could post...any way, i was told along with several other African American men that i was not with that we wouldnt be able to gain entry into the club without a woman present, however we have witnessed on several occasions, men who were not african american gain entry into the club. some of them only had one woman in ratio to several men ..but the Doorman told me that there needs to be a man to a woman in equal ratio. he then told me that the sign says that on the door, but when i checked it didnt ..but the sign did say they have the right to refuse entry for any reason and this is what the bouncer pointed out to me ..so i asked him if they have the right to be rascist and use the sign to justify it, he said yes. i then complained via email to the owner who responded that they do not implement a rascist policy and do it for security reasons ..i didnt know denying entry to black males would be tantamount to enforcing a security issue.. the real issue of rascism exists when the large majority of people of who have not been prejudiced against seem to ignore the issue which in turn perpetuates the behavior. ..if you want to stop the racist behaviour at these establishments, then allow your dollars to speak for themselves. I cant understand how an establishment plays cultural african music but does not allow african american men to patronize it..go figure. read more

First off, I have mad respect for Bembe bc my 1st time coming here was prob about a year to this date (I know bc I was here for Pride), and the latin music (which I previously never listened to) was so amazing, that I not only danced til morning, but when I went back home, I turned on the Latin station and NEVER TURNED IT OFF... for nearly a year. As in til maybe last month. No songs in English besides the little they played, or the little in clubs I frequented. I became outright obsessed w Latin music (to the point I can sing the songs fluently) and dancing and I have Bembe to thank for my new-found passion (Music, & now dancing too, comprises a big part of my happiness, but rock was boring the hell out of me so of course I a bit 'lethargic' in a sense until that crystallizing Bembe moment.) Came back today for my girl's birthday and forgot why I fell in love w music again! It was little Latin... mostly Brazillian, which can be okay if all the Samba is avoided. So caught up w friends mostly which is still cool. Most important was that my friend had a good time since that was the only reason I came! What YOU should know tho about Bembe: FAR (and like the worst trains ever--JMZ or 10 long blocks to L) CROWDED--extremely ; my bday girl was mostly outside! WARM--no A/C, so once YOU dance, HOT! When I pulled up to this place, I thought my friend was trying to kill me. A definite hole in the wall spot that is easy to miss! (its on the corner though) Now I go here on Reggae Tuesdays and I love this little place. It gets really Loud here! I am not able to sustain an in depth conversation with my gal pals. You come here to dance. The dance floor is small and gets thumping after 12:00pm. The bathrooms are unisex and not far from the dance area. This is a really small and cozy place. MUSIC: The music starts off with 70s reggae and comes all the way down to today's Dutty Wine and One-Drop! DJ is REALLY Good! Thought I was in Kingston, Jamaica at one point. PEOPLE: The people here give cool carribean vibes. Age is 25yrs+ The bartender is quick and makes good cocktail drinks (not to strong not to weak). Security was normal and not overbearing. Came here one fateful night with some girlfriends on a whim in order to get out of Manhattan and get a taste of Brooklyn. So happy we wandered into Bembe. I hate those Friday nights where you are all excited to get out after a long week and after getting dressed up, waiting in line, paying way too much for a few drinks, and feeling miserable in your high heels you go home disappointed. This was a refreshing change to the usual nights out in Manhattan! I loved the laid-back, chill atmosphere and the music had me dancing like a free spirit! And they had all these fun drinks that were really cheap! I was drinking something made with fresh watermelon... I came back a few weeks later with a group of friends and had a really great time the second time around. I go for the hammock. The equation goes something like this: Hammock+Great Music +Lack of Pretentiousness= An amazingly good time. I am never lacking a dance partner and the fact that everyone is so friendly is a huge plus. This is absolutely one of my favorite places to go,and it usually happens at random. Sure it's rather crowded,and you're pretty lucky if you ever get to sit...but somethings wrong with you if you ARE sitting!! Even on Sundays I love it, because it makes for a very laid back atmosphere, Sundays are my hammock swinging night :) that reminds me i have photos of the action..must upload ASAP. Bembe used to be the tits when it first opened... most definitely one of my fave local dance spots. After going a bunch of times and never seeing the downstairs dancing area open I stopped coming here. Word is that downstairs is still never open. I'm sure the music here is still hott but I'm hearing all the time now how they got some UncleTom workin the door and not letting anybody in that doesn't look like a Williamsburg midwestern hipster whitey. Shame on you Bembe!!! This place turned into yet another example of white boys opening a bar in the hood and not letting the locals inside. There sure are enough of those around here. We got out little corner and played the bongos to the music all night long! I had bruises on my wrists the next day, and It made me smile everytime I looked at them lol. My friends stay away on their Rasta nights... I personally like the place any night... It depends what you like i suppose? but this bongo playing night in particular was one for the books! definitely awesome! great crowd, very mixed euro, hipster, trendy, crusty... (lol im honest, ok) great music, great drinks. It's Brooklyn, it's eclectic, its live, its fun! I was drunk, everyone was... great times! Went there on a Friday night for a friend's birthday. At 10pm the place was pretty empty. By 11pm, there was a decent number of people. By midnight you kind of have to fight your way through the sea of bodies swaying to the music. You can still kinda dance, but don't expect to impress anyone. I stepped on people's feet a few times. But the music the entire night was a good mix of a lot of different genres from Latin to Brazilian to reggae and back again. With $5 Coronas and $7 caipirinhas, the prices were OK, nothing special, but nothing outrageous. If you don't like a packed place, though, it might not be your cup of tea. read more

This place is trash. Me and my friends were inside for 5 minutes (after paying), and a drunk white girl decided to kick one of us because she thought she was bumped purposefully. We apologized, because it wasn't that big of a deal. Instead of assessing the situation, the bouncers decided to kick me and my friends out instead of the drunk white girl that went out of her way to assault us. I called the police to get our money back, and they insisted I take this matter to civil court. Not over no $30. They will never get my business again, and I will continue telling everyone to NOT support this establishment. How disgusting. read more

One of the worst club experiences in the city, and I gave it several chances. You never know when they're charging cover and how much, the just pull it out of thin air, one night randomly is couples free, another night only guys pay, even though I walked in with 4 babes. Bouncers are RUDE, and the simple drinks are way overpriced. And yes, everybody wants to dance and the place is the size of a closet so good luck with that. My go-to place is a way more authentic latin bar which is a secret, BYE! Bembe is just another whitewashed "latin" club. read more

You will be on your feet all night, besides there hardly being any seats, you will DANCE the night away. This place is out of this world. It's a crazy good experience. The range of music from all over the world complimented by oh so good mojitos and caipirinhas make this a great afterwork, or after dinner spot. If you are from the neighborhood you probably don't go to this place- if you catch my drift. What is it about Brazilian theme places that attracts such slime balls? Oh right. I'm not entirely sure why this place hasn't been shut down due to noise disturbances and the street chaos outside their doors yet. It's our own little W27nd Street. Ugh. I've been here twice already. Had a blast every time i'm in this place. Place is small so expect a long line outside. Either you get there early or wait to get in at a very late hours. wow.. what an amazing experience. walking through the door of this chill funky oasis. The atmosphere and energy make you feel that you are in the caribbean. The drinks are cheap and cheerful. Sipping and grooving to the incredible music it's hard not to notice the beautiful people that your surrounded by. Truly an amazing and unique experience. Bembe is completely overrated. the previous reviewer who said "Bembe is a slice of the Carribean" has obviously never been to the Carribean. If your cup of tea is waiting outside in the snow for an hour to listen to crappy worldbeat, then this just might be your ticket. For anyone else, I would highly recommend spending your time and money elsewhere. read more

They host a free mambo lesson around 9pm on Saturdays. We came in at the tail end to see it wrapping up and they had a decent crowd. My complaint: they played hardly any salsa and the salsa selection the dj played was no bueno. Some of the music blurred the lines between salsa and música tropical and not good variety. Mostly fast songs too. A Latin Mix night can be disappointing if they don't mix it up equally. That is how I felt after rounds and rounds of bachata, merengue, reggaeton, etc. All of the other music was good, but if you are looking to dance mambo to some good stuff, I would go elsewhere.

I braved the rain with two friends on a Saturday night. We took advantage of the free 9 PM beginner salsa lesson, which was fun. Shout-out to the teacher, Andres - he's very patient and even though I know how to dance salsa, I appreciate the way he breaks down the moves for absolute beginners. Ladies can get in free before 10 PM on some days, and after that, it seems to be $16 before midnight. Not sure what the price after midnight is; in the past when I've walked past, the bouncer was saying $20, but maybe that has changed. That said, the night we were there, between 10-11:30 PM, it was pretty empty and low-energy. I'm not sure if it was because of the weather or what, but it was disappointing. There are 2 parts to the club - a Latin music part, and a Hip Hop/Pop/Techno part and you can go in between them. We checked out both - the music was definitely better on the Latin side. Even though more people came in, no one was really dancing. Everyone was just standing or sitting along the wall or at the bar. I know people need to warm up, but still! The DJ was good! 3 stars for the lesson, the tequila shot, and the Latin music, but I'm being generous. Note: coat check is $3.

This is peak millennial, everyone in their business casual going out clothes dancing to whatever the top 40 songs of the time were. You can hear the music down the block before you even enter the space, and the dance floor is always packed with people jumping and dancing around. Going back in my 30s is a decidedly different experience. My tolerance for sticky floors and music so loud you can't hear yourself think is a lot lower. Still, there's a time and place to throw back a few vodka sodas and dance to top 40 (is citing top 40 a dated reference now?), and that time was last night. I might be nursing a hangover, but it was totally worth it for the nostalgia trip.

In a cozy bar like this, the bartenders really set the tone and I must say, they were awesome. As soon as I moseyed up to the bar, I was immediate served. To my delightly surprise, they had 00 beers, which were iced cold too! The DJ spun some lively and eclectic music that the entire room was dancing too, song after song. They had a private party taking over the space at 10pm but if they didn't, we surely would have stayed much longer. Upon exiting the elevator they make you feel like you enter "paradise", do some tarot card reading by asking for your birthdate, and then get some beads with perfume dropped on them depending on which card you got. After all of that, none of those stuff mattered. We were served a three course meal before the actual aerobics show happened, but they still had performers perform while we had our meals or a few drinks. I enjoyed their Crescent Dip, which is a hummus dip with whipped feta and comes with a massive chip. The Full Moon Rice I wasn't really a fan of. After those two, they came out with the entree, which they called Fire, Water, Earth; essentially beet, halibut, and short rib. These were alright, not amazing. The third and final course came during the intermission of the show, which was a bunch of dessert treats and they were delicious. The show itself was fantastic. It was more than just aerobics, has there are also singing, dancing, and violinist. You may get wet in the front so FYI. There's also some fire involved. Overall, a well put together show. I'd probably skip the food, but the drinks were great.

The fog machines keep it like that all night long, but you can look up at the big shiny disco ball as your north star to guide you through the place, which you may want to walk around to find the perfect spot to dance in all night. I was glad I had friends familiar enough with the space that they took us to an elevated area in the back that felt like a VIP lounge but was open to anyone meandering the space. This back area might not be ideal for those who like to stay close to the DJ, but for the rest of us olds who like it in the quieter area and like to sit from time to time, this spot was absolutely perfect. I went on a sweltering night, and though the ACs were on they weren't powerful enough to combat the heat emanating off all the hot and sweaty bodies around the club. You don't really go to a club like this to be comfortable though. The DJ was ok the night I went, but I was thankful to be with a great crew and for that back area so that I could sit from time to time. I am sounding like someone who does not go to the club and am okay with that.
