Ove been here a few times over the years and i come here to get my hair done for all my special occasions and i get facials done and nails. Im a huge fan of the make up side, they usually do my stuff way dark. (Im super albino) so it's hard to do my make up. But hair and nails and facials are bomb! I had no idea Bellus Academy could do lash extensions! I got them done a few days ago and I'm so in love with them! I've had them in the past as well so I understand how long the process was, kristanelle did my lashes and she was so sweet and did an amazing job she paid close attention to the perfect length and shape for my eyes! I've seen her other work as well on her instagram and she's amazing with hair and makeup as well, especially if you are looking to do some fun colors, she has some great skills!!! I was a little nervous because this was my first experience getting my hair colored at a school, but I can honestly say I left loving the color more than I ever have in my life. My stylist was meticulous and her instructor checked in to offer tips constantly. The appointment took about four hours, but for the best highlight job of my life, it was well worth it. My review is solely based on being a student here. I personally would never recommend this school to anyone because I had a terrible experience. I was enrolled in the Make-up Artistry course and hated every minute of it. My teacher, Ms Judy, was awful. Not because she didn't know what she was doing, but because she always had an attitude. I was so excited to attend this class when I signed up but constantly felt uncomfortable and hated going to class everyday. If I had a question she would say to me "Well what do you mean I just showed you?" I'm sorry, but if someone is paying thousands of dollars to go to a month long course and asks questions to get a better education, put a smile on your face, knock off the diva attitude, and earn your pay check. So after attending the course, and really not learning that much because I was too intimidated to asks questions, I knew I still wanted to be involved in the beauty industry. So instead of taking another course at Bellus, I now am in rolled at Marinello Schools of Beauty for their nail program. I love it there! My teacher is so kind and lets me ask as many questions as I want. She never makes me feel stupid and is always encouraging me. So in the end, I guess its Bellus' loss and they should really take the time to see who they are hiring. Even if someone has lots of talent it doesn't necessarily mean they would be good teachers. read more

People Like Renee R. shouldn't be going to a beauty school for services if they want everything to be perfect. It's a school for crying out loud! The students are learning and need people to practice on. You're only paying a fraction of the cost that you'd pay anywhere else. So there's really nothing to complain about. You don't want to hear doors closing all the time why don't you go pay $150 for a massage at Spa Gregorie's...oh that's right, you probably can't afford it. The cosmo students are a little slower at doing hair services (which is clearly stated on the signs in the school) because they have to get the instructors' approval before moving on. There's usually only two instructors to 15-20 students on the floor. Be patient. The Esthetics and Massage Therapy clinics have individual beds that are separated by curtains instead of doors, they do this because it also serves as the students' classroom where they have theory. Putting up walls to separate the beds would cost more money, and would probably end up costing you more as well. Again, if you want a real "spa" experience go to a real spa. read more

I started thinking this school was the shit, but I left disappointed.... I learned to do a basic facial, and that was it.... No eyebrow sculpting that, no lash extensions.... Doing nothing for a month and a half after I became a senior... Disrespectful behavior that was tolerated by the teachers..... Even if you say something nothing changes, because they think there reputation keeps them from being accountable.... But really I found another school that offers a similar masters program as well as additional classes that you can take without having to go into debt... I went to school here, beginning in April and ending in November of 2013. My first experience here was with the esthetic teachers, Ms. Larissa and Ms. Olga. Let me say; they are both INCREDIBLE teachers. You become inspired, excited and driven with their precise and excellent instruction. They love to see you blossom and find the things that you excel in. So, in brief, nothing is bad on the teacher's part. However, the school itself is not as put together as it seems. The underlying troubles in this school include the INSANE amount of students enrolled each month, lack of space for the students who are "seniors", and the lack of organization. While I had a lovely time learning to become an esthetician, I was shoved in a corner with the rest of my senior classmates, and told to study. For one month only, my class had clients. For the following two months, my class sat in a classroom and rotted away, "studying". We did not really learn anything new that was hands on, nor were we able to perform these skills that we had already known on actual clients. My experience at Bellus academy in the esthetics program was strange. There were very high pros, and very low cons. I give my overall experience an "A-OK". read more

Everyone is entitled to have their own reviews but as for me, I was unhappy with the way this school treated me leaving me to have to transfer my hours to Paul Mitchell The School. This school not only changed their Financial Aid officers but also changed their staffs frequently from 2006-2007. I was going through some personal problems and had to take a leave of absence and when I came back they told me that I never signed up to go for my leave of absence. That made no complete sense. They charged me almost 9 bucks per hour that I was gone on my leave of absence. The reported to my student loan that I had completed my course or was finished with "BELLUS" formerly known as Poway. Every time I tried to reach Martha (who was in charge of financial aid) she'd never return my calls, nothing. Several attempts. They finally gave me my hours that were in the computer printed out for me but never fixed my other hours that I was suppose to have credited to my account and I gave them printouts but I guess they lost it when they were going through the whole name change and school remodeling. Really unorganized. My friends and I would started together have the worst luck with them. The lady who gave me my hours didn't seem like she wanted to finish helping me out, gave me the printout and sent me off. I would be happy if they called Citi Bank and told them that the loan was invalid for such and such amount. Now I've been stuck paying off for something that I was unaware of. That's my personal opinion.. I suggest people do their research or even have them sign an agreement letter written by you. So scary having people obtain your social and run it for loans that you weren't aware of. read more

I love Bellus, although I will admit it is hit and miss! I started coming here when I was unemployed and particularly low on cash. I am one of those people that thinks if you don't have a pedicure, you might as well just not shower or brush your teeth. My eyebrows were starting to look like one long caterpillar so while I was out on a 99 cent only shopping trip, I looked up nearby salons and...voila! The salon is beautiful and they did a fantastic job on my brows! My next trip was almost a dirty comedy skit. I decided to try out some waxing, which was a bit of a disaster. I will spare you the gory details, but it took almost 3 hours and there were clippers involved. They invited me back for a freebee waxing since I was such a trooper. I was hesitant, but decided to give it another chance yesterday. I got paired off with Suzy in the masters class yesterday who turned out to be a talented waxer...practically painless and thorough! I was so impressed that since I was scheduled to get a facial, I asked if she would do that as well. Apparently Suzy didn't always have the fabulous skin that she does now, so I was more than happy to listen to her advice on skin care. I ended up getting a pumpkin facial. Amazingly, I didn't look like a blotchy mess when I left thanks to some gentle, but again thorough extractions. My skin is super duper soft and clean! Afterward, she recommended some products, but didn't push me to buy anything, just do some research. How did she know? I'm a big time researcher! I gave her my card because I would definitely go to her again out in the "real" world! Total affordable luxury...I am definitely a fan! read more

I recently went to the Bellus Academy to redeem a "deal" I bought on facebook. The deal was hella cheap - $49 to be exact, for three services - so I thought I'd give it a try. Shellac Manicure - I'd never gotten this done before, but I liked the idea. It took 90 minutes. No hand massage. The lady doing my nails was shaking so bad she couldn't even get her cuticle cutter (for lack of the official word) to work. Sketch. My nails turned out ok, except for my thumb nail which peeled off just a mere hour after I left... GREAT! Facial - I'd never had a facial done before, and I was hesitant because of my sensitive skin. I LOVED the facial. It was 90 minutes and I enjoyed every minute of it. The lady doing it was super friendly although amongst our chat she used the "f" word (let's keep it PG) a handful of times. Not exactly professional, or spa appropriate in my book. I'd go back for the facial again if it wasn't $60. I know they use high end spa products, but it's not a REAL spa, it's a school... Massage - Hella awkward... If you don't want your buttocks to get massaged, warn them in advance because they go there. Maybe I am just new to the massage world but it was interesting! I'm not going to say I didn't enjoy the overall experience, but I wouldn't do it again. She was a little rough and a little invasive. At the end of my little trip to Bellus I have three things to say. 1. Prepare to feel awkward when you walk in the door - Stuck up students stare you down, and the front desk is too busy to be customer service oriented. 2. Unless you find a "deal" don't waste your money. Although the students who provided my manicure, facial and massage were nice enough they still are students, not professionals yet Bellus charges close to what a REAL spa would charge. 3. And if you expect your service to be "supervised" good luck... During my visit I saw no supervision outside of the hair department, no check ins, nothing... And the students I talked to said they wouldn't even trust other students there to provide services for them! If they don't want to go here for half price, why should I?? read more

I recently graduated from BELLUS ACADEMY in Poway back in May 2012. I went thru 2 programs...the MUD make-up certification program (6 weeks) & the Esthetician Program (6 months)...I thoroughly enjoyed MY EXPERIENCE! Not only did I enjoy my instructors: Miss Nicole & Miss Jan, the program taught me what I needed to pass my state boards & helped me with JOB PLACEMENT...I really liked how working in the clinic at school trained & prepared me for my ESTHETICIAN POSITION that I currently work at a SPA located in UTC where I typically perform between 3-6 facials daily. I met the most wonderful girls at BELLUS ACADEMY & so not only did I walk away with a good education, but GREAT FRIENDSHIPS to last a lifetime as well...I'M VERY HAPPY that I made the correct decision to attend! : ) read more

I volunteered to have my hair cut by one of the students, Judy Weeler. She was really nice and listened to her instructors directions very well. The process took a couple hours, I was there from 5pm to 930pm. Which is pretty cool, cause I got to watch how the students learn to do hair. Before the students continue on to the next step in doing your hair, they have a couple instructors walking around giving advice and do any 'fix ups'. Anyways, I walked in looking like a hot-mess and walked out with a freakin' awesome cut. My hair isn't the best to work with either. I have thick coarse color treated hair, and i walked out with healthy looking hair...JUST WITH A HAIRCUT! One of the instructors, his name is Brydon...i hope i spelled his name right...but you can't miss him. He looks like a Rockstar Biker Jesus. Super cool guy, knows what he's doing and is there for the students every step of the way. There was another instructor there named Mat, and the students say that they both rock at doing hair. I walked out a happy test subject, these students have the best instructors and you'll bet i'll come back again. Shoot, I might even want to become a student myself! I wish I could have taken a before and after picture..ugh! Next time I will. You have to be a really patient person to volunteer or be a paying customer to come here. Keep in mind that you'll get your work done by a student. But there's instructors there to help. The students are there to learn and practice. So BE NICE! They are in beauty school to help people like yourselves stay beautiful. If anything, I'm sure they'll value your input while they are working on you. Give them the confidence that they'll do good. Went in for a facial two days ago and other than some really painful extractions on my chin, I thought it went okay. Well, then I got home and after looking in the mirror I realized why the extractions were so painful - the woman had actually removed several layers of skin indifferent places across my chin, leaving red, raw gouges. By yesterday, they had actually scabbed over - and now I'm stuck with scabs across my chin that you can still see through make up. I guess this is why they make you sign a waiver that they aren't responsible for any injuries. Of course, the waiver also said these students were supervised by instructors, but I never saw an instructor supervising this woman. The even more frightening thing is at the end, she said she's almost ready to graduate. Yikes! Yeah, this place might be cheap, but when you go in for a facial and leave with your skin in worse shape than when you went in, it's not worth it! read more

The strip mall where Bellus is located doesn't make you think this place would be nice but once you walk in, the place is modern and pretty cool. I'm sure that just like any school you've got good students and bad students. (In attitude and talent) I've had a less than desirable experience compliments of a "professional" paying full retail price. It's always tricky if you are trying somebody new. I used the esthetician services yesterday morning and got the Botanical Facial. My esthetician student's name is Amy Midlam. If these are the kinds of professionals that Bellus is putting out, then they are doing a stellar job. I had a great facial with lots of pampering just the way I like it. I was relaxed and refreshed when I was finished which is exactly what the doctor ordered. Talking to her inspired me to get back on track with my skin care regime and I'm looking forward to returning soon. read more

I love this place. I started coming a few years ago when my then boyfriend (now husband) got me an awesome Groupon deal for my birthday. And let me tell you, a little money goes a long way here! I have had several services here including a facial, massage, pedicure, and spray tan. Each time I was treated very well by the students and got very good service. Remember, they are students so don't expect fast work but they are very very good. The staff is incredibly nice and knowledgeable and there are teachers all around supervising to make sure the job is done right. They have a wide variety of products to purchase and always make great recommendations. You can't beat their prices either. So much cheaper then going to a regular salon and you get the same quality of service. I can't say enough good things about Bellus...you just have to check it out! read more

Cheap haircuts with students under supervision. Didn't sound like a bad idea at the time. Silly me, the words "cheap" and "under supervision" should have been huge indicators of what was to be, a horrible experience(s). And yes plural -- I've been here on several occasions, like a girlfriend whose trying to believe the best of her boyfriend but knows she could do a lot better. I sat down in the chair and asked for a simple trim and color. My simple trim turned out not to be so simple. The student assigned to my hair was not that confident. Every ten minutes or so, she would stop and wait until her instructor came around to ask for advice; thus leaving me squirming in my chair and wondering what the hell she's doing. I get it. These are students. But note, these are students on the verge of graduating - meaning they should have be done with most if not ALL of their education. After 4 hours of cutting and dying, I was exhausted in sitting in that chair, having random people, fingering random bits of my hair, making random cuts and seemingly random decisions. I left with a mediocre haircut at best and the color came out in about 2.5 weeks - no lie. U-G-H. UGH. The students were nice enough but every time I come, they always try to alter what I want. It's like, no thank you - this is the cut I came here and paid here for. As for their other services, stick with those. The massages, the mani's/pedi's and the facials are all okay for the price you pay. And if you want some updos done for a cheap price - this place is okay too. They've had a LOT of experience with updos since Poway High School is a few miles down the way. Other than that, spend a little more $$ and go somewhere with a little more experience for the haircut you deserve, not the haircut you dread. read more

Avoid this place- they overcharge and do crappy job! They are slow and have little to no experience... First, a year ago, they screwed up my hair so bad, that it took almost a year to get it back to normal... Second, most recently, I decided to give them a second chance with my manicure, and that was a horrible experience by far! They overcharged me two times- for a base layer of shellac, that I wasn't even aware that I have to pay extra for.... The manicurist haven't showered for a week probably, because I was trying to lean backwards to avoid the heavy scent of her dirty hair, but I could still smell it even on my way home....gross! read more

I hate to give a bad update, but I am pretty upset with the outcome of my hair... I went in the other day to get highlights since $35 for a partial was much more appealing than $75 at a regular salon. The student I got was sweet, but a horrible listener. Not only did she not listen to me and my ideas for my hair but she wouldn't even listen to her instructors! It was a two-part endeavor... the first day I went in to get light ash highlights *weaved* into my hair, which she did a good job with since the instructor was there monitoring her. However, she didn't get to finish, so the school let me come in the next day to finish the job & add a few more at no extra cost. Very nice gesture, although now I wish I would've stayed home! I wasn't super happy about the results from the first day. I was blond but it wasn't bright enough for my taste. I brought in a picture of what I liked and the student told me that in order to get to that brightness she'd have to use straight bleach. The word "bleach" scares the crap outta me since my older sister went on a "bleach happy" period earlier in her life and she ended up losing half of her hair because of it! So I told the student, "I want to be brighter, but if this is going to damage my hair in any way then I DO NOT want to do it." From which the student told me, "No, it'll be fine!" Ha... you know, the only reason why I trusted her was because she was supposed to be one of the "senior students" -- someone who's been in school for at least a year -- yet the damage she did to my hair makes me think she should re-start all of her classes. She ended up doing a "horse shoe" with "slices" on top of my head since she thought the weaving technique her instructor made her do the night before was "stupid" and "not the way she's used to doing it". She basically gave me another partial with twice the amount of bleach from the day before. Now I'm not a hair stylist, but even I thought it seemed wrong to put BLEACH ON TOP OF BLEACH... especially when they were a day apart from one another! Well, not only did she scorch part of my scalp (from the bleach) but she COMPLETELY fried my hair. Running my hands through my new ultra-bright strands was like grazing against sand paper -- and it smelled like chemicals! :( Although, I can't put all the fault on her. The second day I came in, she was basically doing everything WITHOUT any supervision. There was a female instructor on the floor but she barely checked up on me, and when she did come my way she didn't question my student at all! She offered to help, but of course my student was like, "No, I'm fine!" That really irritated me and made me nervous... they're not professionals! They need help whether they think so or not! If not for the student than do it for the client whose hair you're experimenting on! I barely felt I like I existed... I might as well have been one of their doll head dummies since my voice wasn't being heard. The reason why I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of 1 is because I ended up calling the school the next day and leaving a message asking to speak to one of the hair instructors. One of them called me back the following day (his name is Jason, whom I've met several times and like) and he helped me out extensively about what hair repair products I should use and how to use them. He recommended that I purchase Kerastase shampoo & conditioner which I bought right away and WOW -- my hair feels better already! Although I'm still upset since the hair care products ended up costing $105! With that amount of money I could've gone to a regular salon and gotten full, professional, flawless highlights that I'd be happy with! Rory from Zen-Bi Salon used to be my "blond guru" and the only reason I stopped going to him was because I was trying to cut costs -- Ha! If there is a lesson that is to be learned it is to splurge your money on someone... a PROFESSIONAL... you KNOW will do great. Don't risk your hair (or scalp) on students! read more

My experience was a mix between a CRUEL JOKE and a HELL ON EARTH! I went for *partial* highlights on short hair, and a trim which lasted OVER 5.5 hours! WHAT A WASTE OF MY LIFE! ...and the worst part is that I left looking like shit! I was way too hungry, angry, and antsy (can you blame me after almost 6 hours) to sit through the blowdrying and styling part. Do yourself a favor and spend a bit more money and go to a real salon, NOT A SCHOOL....or else you will be paying in TIME WASTED, or anger! F**k, I had stuff I needed to do today.... They do deserve 1 star as highlights usually do take a while, (but still this could've been warned about via phone), AND 2-3 hours could've been shaved off that time if the instructors would teach their students to work faster than a turtle! read more

Although you're being worked on by students, most of them do a really good job. I've been here numerous times for facials and once for a haircut. I do NOT recommend coming here for a haircut - especially if you want smooth flowing layers. However, Bellus is great for pampering yourself with facials. If you can get over the fact that you don't get a private room, the serene music will surely erase those forehead lines. They use the Murad product line for most, if not all, their facials. The pomegrante facial is awesome for routine, monthly treatments. You can ask them to spend more time on steaming or extractions and they'll gladly do so. Another big plus is that they don't try to push products on you. They will make recommendations if you have any skin problems you would like to address. I love that they are open until 10pm on most weekdays - perfect way to relax and de-stress after work! They do take credit cards but it's cash only for tip. Call ahead to schedule an appointment because I don't t think they take walk-ins. read more

I called and booked an an appointment for a facial and massage and I forgot to write down what time it was at so I called back a couple of weeks later for them to tell me that they didn't have an appointment for me in their system.... I waited weeks to be able to get in and thats what I get. NO APPOINTMENT! I work full-time like most people do so I can only come in for an appointment either Evenings or weekends.. so I then tried to get ANOTHER appointment since they screwed me over by not putting my last one in. They then tell me the next available appointment for an evening or a weekend is in 2 MONTHS! I didn't even know what to say. They told me if I called on Saturday I could possibly get an appointment for the following Saturday so I called like they told me to and they said they don't have the list of people who are working the following Saturday yet so they cant book people yet... Then they tell me to call back Tuesday.... SO UNORGANIZED OH MY GOD. So I call AGAIN on Tuesday (today) and they tell me everything is booked. WTF After calling a million times and doing what they told me to do and might I add, I was VERY nice and didn't get mad once but that was the last straw. I cant believe how awful the customer service/appointment system is. The people the answer the phones don't know what they are doing!!! I have used their services before and i don't know how the hell I got an appointment then but now I will never try again. I love the massages and facials but they really REALLY screwed up... Also months ago I got a hair cut/color and it looks SO AWFUL! The lady that did it took almost 7 hours to do it and it is uneven and not what I wanted. DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR DONE BY BELLUS THEY DONT KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING. AND Good luck if your trying to get an evening or weekend appointment.. Thats all I can say. read more

I went into Bellus for a well-needed massage. I was approached by a friendly front desk girl named Olivia. She guided me through the spa area and offered me a beverage. I arrived at 7:20pm and relaxed in the waiting area for my appointment. It was 7:30pm and now the action begins. A very friendly girl named Celeste came up and politely introduced herself as my new massage therapist. She asked me many questions to ensure I was "ok" to massage and asked if there are any areas that needed special attention or want avoided. i let her know my preferences and went back to the table. The room was relaxing and Celeste was very in-tuned to my sore muscles and much needed relaxation time. She was quite, considerate, and knowledgable. I would highly recommend her as a student, and I cannot wait until she becomes a professional, I will be her first client! Over all Bellus is an affordable, upscale beauty academy with friendly staff, great accommodations, and a wide array of services. read more

Okay, before I continue I want to say that I came here in response to a free hair color advertisement on Craigslist. I wanted my hair to be lighter brown (it's always been dark brown) with a tint of purple/red to it. But I stressed I wanted it to be LIGHTER BROWN and that the lighter in color held the most importance in what I wanted. Gentleman (from El Cajon?) is working for his next tier for instructing, cuts the hair with practically complete silence, AWKWARD and BORING. After he's done I comment "wow, it looks a little darker, doesn't it?" and he promises its just the lighting inside the studio and that outside it will look lighter than it started. I go outside and realize it's an even darker color, more close to red-black than light-brown/auburn. So when the lady whos making sure he's not failing asks if I like it I say "yeah, it's great" thinking that it will look lighter in the sunlight. I get in the car, look in the mirror at my hair and EEK. No. My never colored before hair is now this dark gloomy color. But I need to be in Oceanside in 30 minutes and theres no way I have the time to go back inside and tell them they DESTROYED MY HAIR COLOR. read more

The way the school is set up definitely makes you feel as though you are in a spa salon. Keep in mind that because these are students, a haircut may take up to 1hr and half. I tried it when I got a Groupon... Now, understanding that it IS teaching facility so I always choose my treatments wisely: Nothing they can screw up - like brow waxes, colors, haircuts, etc... So I always choose advanced treatments - like peels - which are administered by Masters Program students. Or massage like deep tissue and shiatsu. Set your expectations: - It's not a spa, so you're not going to get super indulgent treatment. - It's a teaching facility, so expect that they might fumble a bit. You get what you pay for. I went for a regular manicure ($6) and pedicure ($15) and I was my technician's first client. She was super adorable and very nice but the inexperience showed and I didn't leave with that prettied up, mani/pedi happiness that I so love. She forgot to do a couple of things and didn't do some others things very well but I was her first. They make you sign a release of liability when you first arrive which, admittedly, freaked me out. Her poor little hand was shaking when she tried to cut my cuticles and I told her she didn't have to do it - for both our well being - but she didn't hurt me. Phew. She only had a couple of colors to choose from and didn't have any top coat which seemed weird. She was really dedicated and was trying really hard but it just wasn't a satisfying experience. The salon is beautiful inside and I think that the hair services would probably be a totally different experience. The teachers are totally involved with the hairstylists and all the students have REALLY cute hair. read more

This school has the look and feel of a professional establishment. Of course, it is important to expect the time of each service to take longer than that of a skilled provider. Overall, the products and treatments offered are comparable to that of my preferred salon and spa. The quality of the service you receive is hit and miss; dependent on how diligent and attentive your "student" is. You can also request certain service providers, it just seems the good ones leave right as you discover them. My only criticism is the front desk. Maybe the attendant was having a bad day, but: no smile, was clearly stressed between the long line of customers waiting to check in and answering phones, and I was not thanked as I left. This review is for the Day Spa/Salon. First, this is a school and that is why the prices are so good. Facials- I'm giving three stars, maybe four in future for the facials. The main reason i'm giving three is that I only get them when they are on special, and I will continue to. I've always enjoyed my facials and the girls are great. However, sometimes the girls doing who knows what behind the curtains are loud and giggly, with the occasional "shh, shhhh" from someone behind the curtain ( I always feel bad for the actual girl giving me the facial), which can be very irritating when one is trying to relax, so if there is no special available I'd rather pay for a spa atmosphere. Massage - I'd give that four or five stars. I've not been disappointed at all with my massages. Each therapist has their own strengths. Also, for the most part, they keep things very quiet in the massage area. Hair - I've only had my hair trimmed once. It was uncomfortable for me and took about two hours for the trim on my long hair. I'd not do it again. However, I saw some great cuts going down while I was there, and happy customers. Final note, this is a school, but you can and should certainly remember to tip, according to service received. read more

Awesome getting a $5 haircut. They pay a lot of attention to what they are doing since they have to have the instructor look at it. Lots of attention to detail. Will definitely be going back. FYI my review is only for the barber portion of this place, I don't have any experience with any of the other departments. read more
