However, I want to clarify an important update regarding my experience with one specific stylist. After my appointment, the stylist reviewed my personal social media and later sent me a message declining to service me further--not due to anything that occurred during my appointment, but because I styled my own hair differently outside of the salon. While I respect a stylist's right to set boundaries in their chair, reviewing a client's personal content and making assumptions about them felt unprofessional and inappropriate. Client autonomy outside of appointments should be respected. That said, this issue reflects one individual, not the academy as a whole. I would absolutely return to Bellus Academy and simply book with a different student/stylist moving forward. read more

I have 4C hair and was curious to know who was going to be doing it. My hairstylist was a cool charismatic woman named Sandra. She had beautiful dyed hair and was very pleasant. She washed, blow dried, and did a thermal style on my hair in which I loved! All of the staff and students were very kind and friendly at this location. I had my hair dyed a month ago and Molly and her teacher Todd were both wonderful. I went to get my grey covered a few nights ago and the experience was a nightmare. The woman who was dying my hair wouldnt listen. I kept telling them to please look at Molly's notes from my previous visit and both of them ignored me. The teacher was a blond , chubby woman and she told me there were no.notes about my previous visit. I asked both of them to please look and both of them didn't listen. I knew there were notes because Molly and her teacher Todd were both professional. My hair ended up almost black and that's not what I asked for. I also told the student I wanted a half a inch cut of the length and she ended up cutting two inches. I had hair dye all over my face and instead of cleaning it immediately she waited until.she was finished. I went back today to get Molly's notes and the receptionist found them immediately. I will never go back to that location because they both lied. I was a loyal customer and they didn't give a dam about my feelings. The teacher should be terminated and the student won't last in this profession. Going forward I'll go to the Poway location and ask for Todd's help. read more

Cheyanne did a beautifulllll job on my hair. i went in for highlights and a trim, a bit nervous bc i have very long, dark hair and a balyage that was a bit grown out so i wasn't sure if they'd be able to give me what i was looking for. As a child, my family went to a beauty school for all of our haircuts. So I wasn't nervous about going to a school again. This was my first visit here. The receptionist greeted me with a smile, which is always nice. Kayla gave me a gel manicure; she was so sweet and very careful. She kept asking me to tell her if I felt uncomfortable/pain. She was very gentle so there was no chance of that happening. The end result is gorgeous! I think the reason is that she was very focused on what she was doing and didn't rush. The only thing I thought was strange was that an instructor or one of the licensed staff didn't check in on her to see if she needed anything. She did say she was due to graduate soon so maybe that's the reason. If you're on a budget, this is a great place to take care of you! read more

DO NOT go here for hair services. I have been to other beauty academies throughout the country which the students are on course with professionals at regular salons. BELLUS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. I asked for a lighter all over color than sandy dark blonde and they ended up bleaching and drying my hair. It happened twice because I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that the next time they won't bleach my hair. It ended up being fried twice and this super bright blonde that looked terrible. Plus, I brought in reference pictures of the exact cut that I wanted and they weren't even close to what the reference picture showed. Absolutely horrible. I went back in for them to fix the bleach blonde and I gave them a specific pic AGAIN of what I wanted, and the girl had no idea what she was doing. My hair is this dark brown color looks terrible. Plus after giving her three different reference pictures of what I wanted she had no idea what she was doing. I didn't get the right cut that was in the reference pics. The instructor had to show her how to do a face frame cut. I've been to other beauty academies where students were much more skilled and at a high level to where they could walk out into pro salon and do a superb job. The appointment is also scheduled for 5:30pm and they don't get started until around 6:00 or after then it took until 1000 the first two times and until 9 the third time. Slow af. read more

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, and I booked a haircut ($18) at the El Cajon location and was so happy with how it turned out. The quality of the shampoo, cut, and style was on par (and in some cases, far better) than salons I've gone to before that charge 4x as much. My stylist, Rhylee, was incredible. Walked me through the process and products she was using. And because it's a student atmosphere, it's cool seeing the direction they're getting from their instructors. The only "drawback" is she is set to graduate in June so won't be available next time I'm due for a cut. Parking is easy, there's a free, open lot shared with multiple other businesses. I was greeted and checked in immediately, and the whole vibe of the place was relaxing with good music and an energetic buzz. I only had a few inches cut off, but if you are getting a certain style or color, allow for extra time because of the training aspect. read more
