Devyn was very enthusiastic and excited to get right into it. It's been extremely challenging to find a reliable stylist in the North County area, so Devyn's willingness to really take her time, ask questions and be patient with my textured natural hair was so very appreciate. I felt like she really has a high regard and respect for her craft and it really shows in the work that she out puts. I totally understand these are students trying to learn and get real life experience and that's why I come here as to support them. He was extremely negative and condescending to me and his staff. It was very unprofessional and very rude and an absolute horrible representation of this company and the initiative for these aspiring students. I absolutely love the haircut Garrett (IG: @garrettsflows) gave me! I went for the haircut + blowout style ($18 + Venmo tip), which included a refreshing hair wash as well. Garrett gave me face-framing layers and a square cut in the back, and I couldn't be happier with the results. My appointment was at 6 PM and wrapped up around 9 PM. The space was professional, and they played great pop music during my visit. At first, I was a bit hesitant about getting my hair done at a beauty school, but now I can't recommend it enough! People, save your money and go to a community college. Paying more just to come to Bellus does not mean you will get a better education/experience than a community college. I've taken the Cosmo-barber route in 2017-2018. aside from books, I've gained no hands on experience as they do favor people here. I've received mostly hair cut clients, while others received hair color. You learn the most out in the real world. Cross-over to barber was a joke as I basically was self teaching. This means you could be learning a different chapter, while the barber students are learning the materials that you had already learned from the Cosmo side. Yes, the program is that unorganized. I always come here for my haircuts and I've never had any issues, which is why my past experience was especially disappointing. I had a scheduled appointment but ended up waiting over an hour past my appointment time. When I went to talk to the front desk, I was told my name hadn't been written down, which was frustrating and felt careless. I understand this is a learning environment, but having an appointment overlooked took up a significant amount of my time. I come to the Poway student salon multiple times to dye the hair or just for the facial. This is a school, so my expectation for sure is different than go to a professional salon or spa. However, the students are all very serious with good attitude. The environment is good and they use good products. The price is a deep discount compared to the business salon or spa. I came in today and had a haircut with Marisa. I was happy with my cut. She is pretty far along in school, so it was pretty fast compared wth my typical appointments. I will definetly be in to see her again before she graduates. My only negative comment to Bellus is that they are not open on the weekends and they take their last appointment quite early, so I won't be able to make it there again. The next phase of the Esti 101 program was senior clinic where I was lucky enough to have Miss Victoria as my educator. Her easy going, fun loving, and hands on knowledge in the field made this part of my journey awesome! She always had the best advice for ethical ways to perform services. There have been many times where I sat with her and have had pages of notes on where to apply for jobs, how to present myself, what to say, who to talk to. She taught me about different skincare products and modalities that the higher end spas would want me to have knowledge of. I learned sooooo much about what to expect in the real world from her! She is so knowledgeable and shared so much of what she knew with me that even went beyond esthetics. Her recommendations and passion for living a healthier life was so inspiring and I thank her so much for sharing it all with me. She is such a kind and generous person. I will truly miss her and learning from her. I will never forget our conversations and how much information I obtained from being in her class. The real life scenarios she taught and her ability to give us the tools we needed for success in the field was greatly appreciated. She always made me laugh and I will also miss her quirky jokes and comments. I loved being in Miss Victoria's class, she even helped me with my stress and anxiety when she saw me getting too overwhelmed- I will forever be grateful for her pushing me through a hard time when I almost gave up. Her encouragement and support got me threw a tough time and kept me going strong. The last part of my journey at Bellus was transferring to the 103 medi/lux program with Miss Maryrose and boy did I have a great time in there! Miss Maryrose is truly a diamond in the rough. She made learning sooooo much fun and nearly impossible to fail. From the second I stepped foot in to her class it was like we were in the actual field of esthetics and performing more advanced facials with more advanced modalities. Her way of teaching made everything fun and I looked forward to coming to her class every night. Time flew while I was in the 103 program because that's how much fun I was having. What I loved most was how important she made us all feel as individuals. She took her time to cater to our individual needs, concerns and lack of confidence. If there was something that we weren't confident in she would take the time to hold our hand through the service until we were ok to do it on our own. She wanted everyone to succeed and made it her duty to build confidence in us all. She is such an amazing educator and makes this course fly by. She shared so much about her experiences throughout her career and do's and dont's. Her knowledge was also insightful and made her recommendations and input that much more trustworthy. During theory days she would always correlate what we were learning to her real life experiences and it made the information stick that much more because of it. She just made everything fun and was such a respectable person. Although she was younger than me, I had a tremendous amount of respect for her and the way she treated everyone. Even in difficult and challenging moments, she handled every situation with grace and humility. I see such great things for her future as an educator at Bellus just because of who she is as a person. Someone who steps up to any challenge, takes the initiative to get tasks done even if she has to do it herself and someone who is a team player. From start to finish, she was incredibly thorough, taking the time to explain everything and making sure my skin concerns were addressed. Her touch was gentle and relaxing, yet she worked effectively on my skin. The results are remarkable -- my skin looks brighter, smoother, and feels so much healthier already. I honestly didn't expect such visible improvement from a student, but Maddy clearly has a real talent and a wonderful, caring approach. I've been to Bellus Academy for several years and have had various services now and overall I am very happy and will continue to return. I have tried hair balayage, hair cuts, keratin treatment, and eyelash extensions. What stands out the most is the reasonable pricing, but with that comes at the cost of your time. Because the stylists are students, they are going to take more time than a professional. The salon is not allowed to give a time estimate either so you'll just have to go in without knowing how long you'll end up there, but estimate at least double what the service would regularly take. I'll also note that the internet signal has not been great in there with my phone service provider. It looks like they have wifi for students but I didn't ask if I could connect. Could be an issue if you are there for several hours with no phone connection. They are also open on weekdays only, and only perform certain services on certain weekdays so check with the salon when booking your appointment. I tried over the course of 4 years to schedule a keratin treatment that kept getting canceled on me for various reasons (once because of rain-they won't do it if it's raining because the treatment can't get wet, two times for pandemic-related closures) which are all fair enough, but then I've also been canceled on due to not having the keratin product in stock. I've been told that they have a hard time getting the product from the supplier, so that's an issue that could be worked on. The most frustrating part of the cancellations were that some of them were same-day when I had already taken time off of work. Thankfully, when I brought this to the front desk's attention, they were able to offer a discount off my next treatment. Overall, the stylists I've been scheduled with have been very excited and proud of their work and have done a great job with the services. I have also heard some stylists make references to drama amongst students or complain about the school/instructors which I felt was very unprofessional to say within earshot of a client. Regardless, I will keep coming back for the services and reasonable pricing! read more
