It's been extremely challenging to find a reliable stylist in the North County area, so Devyn's willingness to really take her time, ask questions and be patient with my textured natural hair was so very appreciate. I have very long curly hair that I like straight. So she had to blow dry my hair, flat iron it, and shampoo it! Everyone there was so nice, smiling, and so accommodating! I'm not trying to throw anybody under the bus, but I do believe in speaking up about what happened to me. One person started an unwanted nickname for me, and eventually, it spread throughout the school. Do you know how embarrassing and humiliating that is? I'm 34 years old, investing my time and money into getting my barber license, and trying to establish myself in the barbering industry. The last thing I expected was to become the target of a nickname that made me feel disrespected and humiliated in front of other students and even instructors. I entered the barber program in July after leaving the dental field, where I had spent nearly a decade working in a clinical setting. I wanted to step outside my comfort zone, learn something new, and create a different opportunity for myself. I was a beginner who knew nothing about cutting hair, and I came to school to learn. I was excited about starting a new chapter in my life, and everything seemed fine until certain circumstances began affecting my experience in the morning program. I also questioned why someone who wasn't enrolled as a student was allowed to sit in the morning program for extended periods. I believe schools should maintain a professional learning environment where students can focus on their education. What hurts the most is that I'm trying to build my name and reputation in the barbering industry, and this experience made me feel like someone else's actions could jeopardize the progress I'm trying so hard to make. I'm working toward a career and a future for myself, and I shouldn't have to deal with this kind of humiliation along the way. The situation affected me emotionally more than I ever expected. I spent three days in bed crying over an experience that was supposed to be about learning, growing, and bettering myself. I was disappointed by how everything was handled, and I felt that my concerns were not adequately addressed. The only reason I initially chose this school was because of the financial aid. I wish I had taken more time to research and compare the barber schools in the area instead of choosing the first one I came across. Looking back, I should have done more research before making such an important decision. I've decided to transfer to another school, and I'm hoping for a much better learning environment. I'm sharing my experience so other students, especially women entering the barbering industry, can make informed decisions before investing their time, money, and energy into a program. Despite everything that happened, I refuse to let this experience stop me from becoming a barber. I know why I started, I know what I'm working toward, and I'm not giving up on my goals because of someone else's behavior. My advice to anyone considering this school: do your research, compare your options, and make sure you're choosing an environment where you feel respected and supported. I wish I had done the same before enrolling.
