Although you might be tempted to order from the Italian menu (which wouldn't be the wrong decision), might I instead direct your attention to the Afghan menu, which features a multitude of delights, including bolani (a glorious concoction - perfectly crispy flat bread filled with potato or pumpkin and leek, served with a delicious green dipping sauce) and banjan borani (eggplant sauteed with tomatoes and onions). Full disclosure - these are also the only vegan-friendly options, but still absolutely worth a visit. The inside is nondescript - square tables, relatively comfy chairs, an electric fireplace. The staff is friendly. attentive, and eager to recommend their favorites. Pricing is reasonable for the quality - not cheap, but not extravagant either. Although there aren't many vegan options, the ones that exist are so tasty I could easily be convinced to go back more than once (or twice). read more

My introduction to Bellissimo was through Yelp and I am appreciative. It is delicious! The Jujeh Kabob with grilled chicken is the best I've had in a long time. It's what will bring me back. Through Yelp we also got a sampling of penne pasta. It had creamy alfredo sauce and it kicked with a peppery seasoning. The Mantu was a plate of steamed dumplings full of meat. Flavorful, but somewhat heavy for me, so I would only buy it to share versus it being my meal. Service was attentive from this family owned business. We ordered takeout and it was prepped fairly fast. We brought home baklava and chai as well. The baklava is a large portion. The restaurant is small but does have indoor seating and I spotted a couple of patio seats. If tables were open you could fit a larger group as a sit down meal. A lot of customers did takeout. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Private parking lot for the shopping strip. read more

I recommend this place to everyone I meet. We first found this place a little over a year ago and were so impressed and a little confused. From the outside it looks like a simple Italian restaurant but it's sooo much more. The Italian food is good and all but the Afghan food is amazing. We always get the lamb shank Palau, a couple of kebabs and the potato pancake. The place is family owned and it shows. They're always very friendly and welcoming. Just be prepared to wait a little on a busy night. I'll miss this place when we move! read more

I had never had Afghan food until coming here and WOW, I'm so glad I did! I tried the Qabili Palow, which is lamb over a bed of rice, carrots, and raisins. The lamb was AMAZING! It was deliciously cooked, fell right off the bone, and so so soooo flavorful. I was a bit nervous of the raisins in the rice but I really enjoyed them! I got to go but the service at the counter is amazing, it's a family business and you can tell they genuinely care about what goes into their food! Overall: I really love this spot! I can't wait to come back and try some from the Italian side as well! read more

I went in on a Friday and there was only two other people in the restaurant so I thought it would be a quick service. I placed an order for a chicken kebab and after waiting 30 minutes I finally just canceled the order because it was clear that they forgot to place it. What a shame but now I see why the restaurant is completely empty during a lunch service. read more

When I walked in this small, spartan restaurant I was glad to see all but one of the tables full of diners. This is not a dark, romantic bistro with fancy cocktails or wine; it's all about the food. The menu is half Afghan, half Italian. Our party of six sampled both sides, mostly Afghan, with great success. Everything is made to order so it will take a while, but it's well worth the wait. We kept hearing wonderful things about Bellissimo and Italian/Afghani restaurant located off Bardstown Road. We decided to meet up on a Thursday and we made a reservation online through their website. You could tell this is one of those locations where a lot of their regulars are typically coming in for carryout. It's a small restaurant with a few tables. But it's enough. Our server was wonderful and lovely. He gave us some good advice about the menu. We decided to go with an Afghani option for dinner because when given the option you try something new. We got the eggplant dish - banjan borani-And it was one of the most delicious items I've ever had. It was vegetarian with grilled eggplant, tomatoes, a garlic yogurt and mint seasoning. It came with rice. All three of us got the same thing. We ate all of it. It was so delicious. The price point was also very reasonable and I would love to go back. Afghani and Italian food? How can you go wrong? I chose this for dinner in case hubby didn't want anything new and exotic. But who knew? He also chose the Afghani side of the menu. We chose Mantu, Bolani, Qabili Pulau and Banjan Borani. The mantu was a big full order of beef dumplings with yogurt and lentils. Bolani was a thin dough wrapped around filling of potatoes and leek with a warm spicy flavor. That lamb shank and pulau? Oh, my: so tender, so sticky so yummy. And if you like eggplants like I do, you must try the banjan borani. It should be called the art of eggplant. The place is small and intimate one room place. Service was friendly and efficient. I went to Bellissimo with a group of friends. It was very easy to make a reservation and our table was ready when we got there. I've never had Afghan food, but it was amazing. Very bright and flavorful. I had the Mantu - which were beef filled steamed dumplings with tomato sauce split peas on top and drizzled with a yogurt sauce. It came with a side of chutney that was bright, full of flavor, and packed a little heat. I thought the spice level of the dish was perfect - but if you're intolerant to spice, it might be too much. Fabulous, authentic Afghani food just as good as Fremont, CA. It's family owned and it seemed and tasted as though food was being cooked fresh. As far as service, it was so kind of the Misses the come over and get to know me as well as ask me if I liked the food. My grandson and I dined at Bellissimo recently. It was our first visit but not our last. It's a small cozy restaurant but every table was taken which recommends it. My grandson chose an Afghan meal called Mantu and he loved it. It was beef filled dumplings with a sauce he said was wonderful. I chose an Italian dish with tender chicken breast, mushrooms and sun dried tomatoes . The creamy Parmesan sauce was delicious. It was served with pasta and warm rolls. We were too full for dessert but I'm sure the baklava and cannoli were special too. The cook and waiter were warm and welcoming as well. I'm anxious to go back sometime soon. read more

I had lunch with my 16 year old grandson at Bellissimo when we were in the area to purchase a guitar. He had the beef and a chicken kebab. The entree was very generous and he ate every bite. My wife and I ate here this evening for the first time and it was fantastic. I had a chicken kabob at our servers suggestion since I am unfamiliar with Afghan food. Delicious. I now want to try everything on the menu. My wife went to the Italian side of the menu and had the Tuscan chicken. She's talked about how good it was for the past hour since we left. First but for sure not our last visit. A newish hidden gem restaurant with lots of charm, spotlessly clean with five tables. Personally I'd like somewhat dimmer lighting to cozy up the feel a bit. Excellent, unfussy service. Now for the food...my lamb shank was juicy, tender, served on a huge mound of delicious rice garnished with raisins. Plenty left for tomorrow. Amazing place, nice small family owned business, everything was cooked to order, you can taste how fresh all the ingredients are. With my places I've tried in Louisville since moving here this past summer, the portion to price ratio is one of the best ones I've seen. I just had Texas road house the night before this and was slightly annoyed at the quality of food/quantity I got there for twice the price I paid at this restaurant. Delicious, flavorful foods. Don't be scared off by the lack of cars in the parking lot. They do a lot of take out business, but stopping in is worth it too. My daughter had the chicken Alfredo and said it was the best she'd ever had. It was like a cross between Mac and Cheese and Alfredo - very good. My family also tried the Qabili Palau and the Mantu from the Afghani menu. The lamb was so tender and everything was well seasoned and delicious. Because dinner was so good, we also tried the baklava and cannoli. Both were very good! The restaurant is clean and neat. Nothing fancy, just a casual family owned restaurant. The meatballs have a good flavor but could use a little more fat; the cheese helps a bit. The spritzes are fantastic and you should definitely start with one. Get the Venetian if you like a pop of bitterness in your drinks.

He shared that the recipes are his own family recipes, and you can taste that authenticity in every bite!! We ordered the bruschetta, gnocchi, fettuccine Alfredo, and the margherita pizza. Every.single.dish was incredibly flavorful and clearly made fresh in-house. Add in a great wine and bourbon selection, and it was perfection. Warm hospitality, amazing food, and a place we'll definitely return to. Thank you!!!
