I've been going to Belle Isle since I was a kid. From playing softball in Little League to Caribbean picnics there are many core memories that I have patronizing this little island. I especially love going during the summertime with my baby Cousins to the aquarium and hiking in the fall. Another amazing thing about this island is that you can sit and relax, enjoying the sites of our neighbors over in Canada while flying kites during the kite festival. From fishing to kayaking to hiking this place is amazing. read more

Belle Isle is one of those places that you tend to visit often when growing up in Detroit. From the time I was a little girl, I've been visiting this place. I've seen the transformation over the years and its interesting to see how much this place has changed. I stopped by today to just relax by the water and take in the sights. For anyone visiting, stop by! Belle Isle is beautiful and is a Detroit staple. read more

Belle Isle has changed dramatically over the last several years. Since the state took over management, the park feels cleaner, safer, and far more maintained than it once did. The investment really shows -- from the roads and landscaping to the public spaces along the water. It's one of the best places in Detroit to relax, walk, or ride, and the bike paths are perfect whether you're on a regular bike, e-bike, scooter, or just cruising around the island. The views of the Detroit River and skyline make it feel like a completely different environment from the city only minutes away. read more

Such a nice place to go during the summer or fall... Anytime really. The State does a good job of maintaining it. The aquarium is really cool lots of people out fishing and generally enjoying the surroundings. There's also a nine hole golf course on the island. Check it out if you haven't! read more

Located right in the middle of the Detroit River, Belle Isle Park is a natural island that French colonists named Hog Island, because they used to allow their mostly porcine livestock to graze its land. Thankfully, Detroit came to its senses and renamed it. I've only been here at night, but my brother is an adventurous driver, so we drove about 70 percent of the park's roads, which aren't terribly well marked or lit at night. Watch out for one-way streets and people going way to fast in their souped-up, lowered cars. There's so much to do here during the day that my four-star rating seems premature, but I don't know when I'll return to Detroit, so I felt like I had to review it with my partial nocturnal experience. As most everyone knows, Windsor, Ontario, Canada, is due south of Detroit, Michigan, USA; so if you want to go (or escape) to Canada and don't have a passport, go buy a winter diver's wetsuit and get yourself across the bridge to Belle Isle. Once there, head for the southern shore. Jump in the water and start swimming south. If you're a decent swimmer, you'll reach free Canadian soil quickly, but no matter what kind of a swimmer you are, you'll reach Canada almost immediately, because the international border is about 300 feet from Belle Isle's southern shore. Why? Because technically, the border should run right through the middle of Belle Isle, which is right in the middle of the river, but treaties, and the US was given the entire island, so the boundary line was drawn as close to the middle of the river as possible while still giving the US full use of the island's southern shore. So swim south to O Canada, where there's still free soil, before it becomes our 51st state--or maybe 52nd, depending on what that lunatic decides to do with Venezuela. Windsor looks absolutely gorgeous at night. read more

Who doesn't love Belle Isle!! I actually haven't been here for a few years and we were in the Detroit area and decided to take a drive along Belle Isle. It's really beautiful here and the views are wonderful although I was here during the cold weather. I imagine there's much more to see during the summer when there's probably boats to look at but what a fun place and all you need is a recreation pass on your license plate and you get in for free. read more

My boys and I had a good time at Belle Isle Beach with friends! The weather was sunny and warm and the water was surprisingly decent. I always remind my kiddos to keep their heads above water just to be safe, but overall it was a nice experience. I've heard people mention a fishy smell here before, but I've noticed it really depends on the day and which part of the beach you're at. Luckily, there was no odor the day we went. I do wish we had brought some floats because this beach is definitely better for relaxing and floating rather than actual swimming. We grilled a bit, and the vibe was so friendly. We forgot a lighter and charcoal, and the family next to us generously helped us out. Someone else even gave us sunscreen when we ran out! If you want a good parking spot, I'd suggest going early. It was packed when we arrived around 5 PM, but we got lucky. We stayed until about 8 PM and had a great few hours. What I love most is how close it is to home only a 15 minute drive. Honestly, I don't see the point of driving 45 minutes to an hour for the same experience. This spot is perfect if you just want to lay out, float in the water, or have a quick, relaxing beach day. read more

Belle Isle deserved all of its flowers! In the last 5 years this park has transformed into a haven for Detroiters. In the summer there is a Belle Isle Beach club where we join in the early morning, share some coffee, and meet new people. The aquarium is amazing and the conservancy is great! There are areas for picnics and trails and kayaking! truly a small ecosystem for all things nature to do! Just BEWARE of the GEESE! read more

There are geese be careful. Yet deer and other species Welcome You to there home. Want a Conservatory view? Next visit The Aquarium Its the vibe that impresses me. Enjoyed the park on a nice sunny but not too hot weekend afternoon. It was free admission and we explored the nature center, garden, zoo, had a picnic, went to play ground bought the kid some ice cream, drove around. It was several areas that was really nice. However majority of the park is open with grass. If you like to run one lap around will for sure be very scenic and all you need for exercise for the day. We were hoping to see the cat but it did not appear in our trip. A nice scenic spot for picnic and sightseeing in Detroit. read more

Belle Isle Park is maybe or one of the most beautiful parks I have ever been to, or even seen in my life for that matter. Of all places it is in the heart of Detroit Michigan baby. Me and my girlfriend were impressed here. I love the ocean and the city view. You must visit in the summertime. You will get a better taste and vibe of the park. We felt safe coming here to take a look, because at first, we were a little doubtful, but we ended up having a good day. read more

Like visiting here in the mornings when there is not that many people or cars. I especially enjoy visiting the aquarium and garden. I don't like however going in the evenings when it is crowded and lots of people are listening to loud music and smoking weed. It disturbs the peace. They do have other less foot/car traffic areas on the other side of the isle park that is better if you go into parks for a cup of peace. Overall it is a very nice park. read more

Love belle isle , recently came to go to the Art Fair and just sit by the water. Honestly so peaceful and relaxing. One of my favorite places to go in the city of Detroit. The Art fair was beautiful with more than 100 local artist . If you haven't experienced belle isle you must make a trip. Come over the bridge onto the island look at Canada or look at Down Detroit or enjoy the aquarium or just the atmosphere and ambiance. It's parks with swings and places to grill . It does cost very minimal price to get on island but worth every penny. read more

This park has so many great things to offer-what's not to love (aside from the parking some days, but that's easy enough to get around if you ride a bike into the park!) The views from the park are spectacular, and there's ample places to gather with friends and family-or to sit and enjoy some peace, quiet, and fresh air. The lighthouse on the north end of the island is a beautiful place to relax, and the island is a perfect place to do a 5 mile loop on a bicycle! If you have the time, the aquarium is phenomenal, and the DYC is gorgeous! read more

Only thing this place is missing is maybe a cafeteria cuz there's no where to get any food. All the food trucks I saw parked randomly weren't open. However the park is huge and you can easily spend an entire day there. Lots of sun and beautiful views and there's even a beach although it was closed when I went. There's so many scenic locations here to take wedding photos or event photos. Im surprised I didn't see more people. If We were in California there would be tons of people taking photos! read more

I found this gem on Yelp and when I visited family in Michigan, I decided to explore the area near Detroit on my own (I'm a big fan of solo traveling). You have to buy a pass to enter (per car, one day pass was $11 or you can buy a longer one too). I drove for a bit and then parked and walked around. It's gorgeous! You get a beautiful view across the water of Detroit and best part was meeting the friendly people of Michigan! There were lot of families here as it's so kid friendly but I also saw plenty of people kayaking, hiking and sun bathing too. If you are in this area, absolutely come here. As I was driving along the loop, I saw a baby deer and the mom crossing the road. Loved it! I'm coming back here ever time I visit Detroit. read more

I love Belle Isle Park! Sunset Point, the fountain, the aquarium, Oudolf Garden, Anna Scripps Conservatory (under construction), a playscape, the many attractions, winding roads, lakes, and "nature" of the place makes this park phenomenal! What a waste of time and energy. More time spent driving round and round and round the outer perimeter of the isle on the one-way road, stopping to figure out the inaccurate teeny tiny map that had a text font of less than 1. No time enjoying a hike or the lunch we brought with us, in a quiet spot as we had hoped. Good luck finding bathrooms. The staff at the front check-in was "shocked" we couldn't find any bathrooms, and took the map and started quickly pointing at place and naming them (those names she said, turned out they are not on the map) and saying they only have porta potties. What they have is hundreds of picnic tables and basically very little in the way of bathroom facilities. They have so many picnic tables it seems the whole isle is picnic areas. But no bathrooms. They have a small place in a large parking lot that has a roof and cement floor, with *a single picnic table* and another one outside of the shelter. No bathrooms. But they do have one picnic area with a roof and private bathrooms, if you rent it out for an event, then you may have a bathroom. If it's clean and working. We found a stop that looked like a bathroom - it wasn't. A ways down near the parking lane were two - TWO porta potties for the whole park. But yeah of course, like the rest of the place, they don't maintain them. I can't describe anything I saw on opening the door but I'm glad I had not eaten before that: the filth was over 2" deep on the floor. TIP: There are real bathrooms. We found one Ladies and one Gentlemen's bathrooms in the whole place. I'll tell you how we found them. We kept getting lost trying to follow the worst map ever. All the roads seem to be one way,but aren't marked so on the "map" and side roads going off the main circle just appear suddenly with NO SIGNS saying what they are or where they go. Somehow we managed to find what turned out to the Nature Center. They have 2 restrooms, just two stalls per restroom, but they're real. They were not clean: someone had used the floor in one of the stalls, it was quite bad. The other indoor places, I was told , don't have any restrooms but one building supposedly has one porta potty. I can't see how this qualifies as a state park. It's like a very poor city park in a broke nation. Not like any Michigan State Parks I've seen. I'm not talking about all the yard work that needs to be done. This has no bathrooms, no road signs, no infrastructure. No good map. This has no place to hike in nature: you hike right next to the main road, not in forests or woods or on real trails. Even the picnic tables are just a few feet from the roadside parking, which is next to a lane of one-way traffic. Conclusion: there are better places to go! I'd rather have driven 3 hours to a real state park that's cleaner and has restrooms and directional signs, and staff who can look up directions within the park for visitors. A place with some nature and trails away from the constant traiffic. We came here as what we thought would be a nice place for a birthday picnic and a short hike, but left frustrated and stressed. read more

7/3/2025 we visited Belle Isle. I will say the park employees were super friendly and knowledgeable. We walked thru the Atrium and they allowed our small dog inside as long as she stayed in her harness. The atrium was a bit on the smaller side but very nice with the typical tropical garden section, cactus garden section and another section but the lily pond was closed off and not in operation. Now for the rest of the park. The large fountain at one end of the island was fenced off with chain link fencing and the fountain turned off. The park employees said it was due for rehab. The original horse stables were closed off, boarded up and in disrepair and the park employees said it was due to lead paint and no funds for repairs but on the repair list. The 2-3 historic homes on the island, with one of them being the first home built on the island, were also closed and again, in need of repair and lack of funding. The original marina was fenced off in disrepair and looked to be used as a storage lot for who knows what. The newer marina aka Detroit Yacht Club was fully occupied and looked to be taken care of. The outdoor garden was nice to walk thru, plenty of picnic tables throughout the park, 3 food trucks, fishing allowed here and there and free entry into the park if you have a park pass. Personally, I don't care to revisit this park. For the Detroit inner city residents i'd say it's nice to have a park nearby for fishing but I wouldn't call Belle Isle a "tourist attraction". Hopefully state funding comes thru and they can bring everything up to par and save the historic buildings. As far as the green space there is plenty of room to roam around (900+- acres), jog or ride your bike around the outer loop, lay out on a blanket and view Canada and the USA while you picnic, read a book or just enjoy the weather on a nice day. Dogs are allowed but must remain on a 6' leash. The Coast Guard has a facility at one end of the island and there is a nice public sand beach area as well. This place could truly be a wonderful "tourist attraction" but it's going to take a lot of funding to bring it back to its original glory. read more

This place is a total dud. The kids playground while big is full of rust and over grown. The beach is super small and very dirty. Who the heck knew that Detroit contained an island within its city limits? Certainly not me before visiting Belle Isle. I'm geographically challenged, but now I (and you) know: Detroit has an island just off of the city! And there's a park on it. And the park is really neat and has multiple playgrounds, an aquarium, a nature center, and lots of other cool things. We visited all of the playground in Belle Isle, of which there is a big one called Kid's Row in the center of the island, and also a smaller but still super fun playground by the nature center. Speaking of nature center: There is a free nature center on the island, as well as a free aquarium (donations accepted), and a botanical garden that wasn't open when we visited but was being renovated. We visited Belle Isle by car, so we had to pay a fee to enter for the day, which was $12. If you take a bike or walk onto Belle aisle, it's free. But this island is huge, so if you're thinking of walking around it, be prepared to walk for an hour or so. It's much more peasant to drive around the island. There are a few sandy banks where you can chill and look out at the lake. Belle Isle is super close to downtown Detroit and the Canada border, so you can see both from the beach, which is really cool. read more

This park was SO beautiful. It was a beautiful sunny day when I went, so that was a cherry on top. I'd recommend printing out a map from their website to help guide you as you're walking around this park. It is an incredibly large park and can walk and bike around. Standing at the edge of the Belle Isle, and looking over the Detroit River is such a sight. I would highly recommend coming here, either by yourself, or with a friend or two. Fair warning: there is some signage saying you need a "recreation passport", but there is no gate or booth, and no obvious way to get one. I suppose if you are local you might have done so with your license plate, but for a tourist, this was a significant hangup. Apparently there are some machines hidden away, but it was very much not obvious where to find one, so the city got no money from me. If anyone was checking these passes, I didn't get caught. The park itself is a large island which has splendid views and a wide variety of attractions but is both overdeveloped and kind of falling apart. Much of the infrastructure looks like it was built in the 1960's, and numerous sections of road and buildings were closed off and looked like they had been abandoned for some time. Other areas were under active construction. Then again, even if you consider only what's actually available, there are some nice things, including a greenhouse, a small but fairly dynamic aquarium, a little stretch of beach on the inland-facing side of the island, a museum, and a nature center. More to the point, there is plenty of waterside space in which to run, walk or otherwise enjoy the scenery, and the water had a distinctive shade to it, and one could see the Detroit cityscape as well as get a view of the Canadian wilderness on the other side of the river. The park needs a ton of work, by any standards, but if I were in Detroit regularly, I would probably be here regularly. read more

Spent some time at Belle Isle Park during the time Covid restrictions were very strict. Had a picnic lunch at Sunset Point. Great views of the water and Canada. Yup, you could see Canada right across the Detroit River. So close, yet so far away. Oh well, at least we got the opportunity to visit Belle Isle Park in Detroit. We would not have visited otherwise. read more

Why am I seeing reviews that it's not free? You don't pay to get on the island at all. Anyway, once you get here you'll see that parking is easy and everywhere. That's the easiest part. We took pictures of the skyline which is definitely a reason to come here. We walked over to the fountain and then drove to see the conservatory. The aquarium wasn't open that day. The conservatory was cool and also free! Lots of different plants, some of which you'll recognize as the trendy ones in your own apartment: snake plant, cactus, succulents, crotons, palms, etc. Very extensive and I'm sure a lot of work to upkeep! There's some grounds to walk around. Not much in my opinion on that end. Not gonna lie, if you've been to botanical gardens in other cities, this might be a bit lackluster. Still, it's nice to have free things to see! We drove around and saw that they have a museum about the lakes, lots of playgrounds, a little "beach" area. Lots of people were on picnics or summer camps or family reunions or something like that. It's pretty much a large park that is accessible for people who live near here. Loving all the green space! Kinda wondering if they do 5K's here? Literally you could have people run around the whole isle or something. read more
