I wanted something different; no Marriott or stuffy hotel, so I went onto vrbo.com (Vacation Rentals By Owner) and immediately fell in love with The Brighton Beach Bungalows. The reservation process was very easy; email exchange followed by a phone call, and working with Laurie and Ian was incredibly easy. They are a lovely married couple who own the two rental homes, appropriately named the "Sun" and "Surf" bungalows. Upon arrival, we were excited to see that we were about a block off of Ocean Beach, had our own garage (which is very necessary on the busy block), there were 5 or 6 cruisers for us to ride around on, boogie boards, beach chairs, beach towels, a beach blanket... and even a shower outside in the yard area. Once inside, the same attention to detail carried all through the house. Wifi, two TV's, every type of dish or cooking item you could ever need, ample towels, a plush, comfortable couch and incredibly comfortable bed. Everything we needed was right there for us. Even on last minute booking, the bungalows are perfectly reasonable cost wise, and the ability to cook and entertain without having to eat out every meal was fabulous. This was the perfect place to stay, and I will never stay anywhere else in San Diego again!!

You are within a 10 minute walk to everything would need, including bars, restaurants and of course the beach. We will definitely be staying here again and also recommending to all our friends! And if you do want to head downtown its only a $14.00 Uber ride.

As noted in other reviews the rooms are small- my husband and I are NOT small, we managed! The tall bed was comfortable and there was a helpful step placed in the closet so I did not have to resort to a high jump to get in. The bed was comfy. Breakfast was ok- I have a food allergy and staff had to scramble to accommodate it. I didn't think of it when we made the reservations, so that is on me. STAFF WAS AMAZING! Warm, friendly and filled with recommendations on where to eat ( dinner- and of course APPLE PIE!) We all agreed (we were traveling with others) that we would like to come and stay again. When you take into account the afternoon tea and a full breakfast, it's downright budget friendly!

My wife and I stayed in the Julian Gold Rush Hotel for two nights few weeks ago. Here are some pros…read moreand cons: Pros: Price, our room was $155 / night. That would probably pay for parking in San Diego hotels. This is a historic building and an interesting attraction in its own right. Breakfast is included and it was terrific. Food is expensive in Julian. A similar breakfast at a local restaurant would be $20. The staff are great. I met several day managers and the night security guy. They are all terrific people. It is really like staying in someone's home rather than a hotel. These is no TV. I think that belongs with the pros. The location is great. Right in the middle of town. Cons: Our room was tiny. Really tiny. Use the drawers and closets for your stuff so you don't trip over it. A side effect of the smallness of the room is that the heater/ac struggles to control the temperature . The design of any heater/ac unit presumes a room volume. The room is so tiny, the heater's built in control parameters are way off. Parking, parking is "street parking" and on a weekend, it's every man for himself. You may have to drag your bags a block or two. ---------------------- So would we stay there again? Absolutely. I would probably spend a bit more and get one of the small number of larger rooms, if available. If you want to relax and read, I cannot think of a better place. One thing I should mention, if you attempt to make reservations on line, there are half a dozen fake web sites imitating the hotel. They are put up by a dodgy travel company. They are really good imitations. I even an experienced computer user could be fooled. It is best just to call them.

With that being said. The hotel looks much nicer in the photos than it does in person. The rooms themselves were good, they were clean and comfortable enough for our stay. We originally booked a regular 2 queen bedroom and were upgraded to a room with a kitchen and living room, which was a nice surprise and definitely appreciated. One thing we did enjoy was that there were places within walking distance, including a good pizza place and a gelato shop nearby. The biggest downside for us was the beach behind the hotel. When we walked down the beach, there were a lot of young people hanging around and random people camping there, which made the atmosphere less relaxing than expected. We are aware this is out of the hotel's control, but it did make the beach area feel less family friendly than we had hoped.

We liked that the double queen rooms came with spacious couches, microwaves, mini fridges and a kitchen island/bar to sit at. If your room faces the sunset, turn your AC on blast right away to keep it around 74 in your room or else it's going to get VERY toasty if you can't get the balcony slider open for fresh air. Walking around the property has a nice tropical feel. The landscapers do a nice job with all the trees and flowers. 4 star reasoning: We were told when we booked over the phone that we could get a pass for a second car when we arrived. When we arrived we were told we could not have a second car (we were absolutely willing to pay but it didn't matter and there were MANY open spots at 11pm). We planned our trip around the ability to have 2 cars. The hotel is unfortunately NOT gated so rather than staying overnight with my family, I drove home. I would NOT recommend parking across the street. The sliding door in our room in the 600 building was no longer functioning. And it could be heaved and forced open but it wasn't worth the effort or the noise it created.
