Quinoa with fruit, coconut milk latte, fresh orange juice
Stefanie H.

Just returned from an anniversary staycation at Twelve Senses and had a fantastic getaway--highly recommend if you are looking for a comfortable stay in a thoughtfully-decorated place. We booked the Fire room and arrived to find a bottle of Prosecco and a sweet card wishing us a happy anniversary, such a lovely touch. The room is stunning and the bed and bedding is so comfortable and I really appreciated the range of lighting options, from functional lights to warm and cozy. I can't say enough good things about the included breakfasts--we ordered the vegan options (fruit and quinoa one morning, overnight oats the next) with delicious lattes and fresh orange juice. What a luxury to have it delivered to our room so we could enjoy a lazy morning! Anyway, if you want to stay in the Encinitas area, don't bother with the airbnbs in the area, stay at Twelve Senses instead. It's as delightful in real life as their website promises, and you get to support a small-business owner who clearly cares that her guests are happy!

Goodies on arrival

Such an amazing stay at 12 Senses!! Love the sustainability efforts and attention to detail. Every detail in each room is curated to the theme. I stayed in the air room, which featured an essential oil diffuser and hammock on the balcony. Such a lovely surprise to arrive to wine and some sweet treats! Plus a cute goodie bag to take home. My stay was short but so relaxing. I used the meditation app on the iPod in the morning while laying in the hammock. AND the breakfast was incredible!! I ate my mushroom eggs with toast and yogurt bowl on the rooftop deck and enjoyed an energizing coconut matcha latte. I can't wait to come back when I'm in Encinitas again!

We came across this local gem (we live an hour and half away) by luck and wow, what an experience! It was much needed for my hubby and I to step away, the energy from this place and surroundings are so calming and exactly what we needed. Each and every detail is so well thought out by the wonderful host, Anke, like the room decor, very comfortable beds, wine and chocolates, and oh my goodness the breakfast in bed was a delight ! We are definitely going to be back and make this haven a ritual!

So cute!

Have to laugh because I think this is the first time I have ever written a follow up / second review for a business. Anke at Twelve Senses incredible. I stayed here once a about a year ago and this experiences exceeded the first which I didn't think was possible. The food is amazing and still organic. The products placed within the rooms are luxurious. Nest AC/heating works great and this is an easy walk to the best restaurants and coffee in Encinitas. Thank you Anke for creating this place!

Such a peaceful hidden gem. We attended a Pop Up Dinner with friends and enjoyed a lovely sunset with wine and a three course dinner by the most amazing Private Chef Francoise Brana. Loved this retreat and look forward to coming back to relax for a Staycation hopefully in the Earth Room with the Bath.

Stunning property, perfectly appointed rooms and the most lovely staff, owner and pup! Every aspect of the space feels so considered from the linens to the decor and delightful menu. Additionally they are dog friendly and offer gluten free and vegan options! Truly a dreamy space, can't wait to visit again!

We really enjoyed our time at 12 Senses Retreat. The host is extremely responsive, check in was easy, and the room/property was tastefully done. The highlight for me was the breakfast- delivered right to your door at a requested time. We would stay again the next time we're in Encinitas.

Amazing spot for a local getaway. The owner is amazing, super friendly and a great host. She received us as if we were home. The space is simple and super elegant. Less is more. It is peaceful, clean, quiet, and super nice.

We were able to snag the last massages of the night. We didn't know we were supposed to book ahead, but we at least got in one service. I also did ear seeding for my lower back, hips, sciatica, and piriformis muscle. I also got chocolate samples, some had mushrooms in them. I also got a sample of red light therapy, which was relaxing, but the wine didn't mix well with it because I got a little nauseous afterwards. ***I WILL NOT BE RETUNING***…read more Let me start by saying my first visit to Golden Door in January 2024 was one of the most magical, transformative, spiritual and relaxing experience I have ever had. From the food, to the choice of classes, the tranquil property and all inclusive amenities really stood out from anything else I have experienced. I have worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years and this was a very special and memorable place. I had such a wonderful experience the first time I decided to use my savings to return in 2025. The past 5 years has been filled with trauma and major life changes and I felt I deserved to treat myself even though I really couldn't afford to do so. I arrived Sunday, January 19, 2025 and until Tuesday afternoon my experience was exactly as I had remembered. I was so thrilled to be there. Tuesday, January 21, my massage therapist came to my room to give me a massage. The therapist was pretty firm with their pressure, but I assumed this would be good since I normally get soft pressure and my muscles were a bit tense. We discussed their type of massages and they explained they are prone to give deep tissue massages. The massage was ok, although slightly painful. During the last couple minutes of the massage, the therapist focused on my shoulders and neck area. They turned my neck to one side and pressed firm with their knuckles, then flipped my head over to the other side and continued firmly pressing my neck. At one point, for a couple seconds, I thought I may pass out, but soon recovered. I got up from the table and walked to the bathroom and at that moment I felt the room spinning. I told the massage therapist I felt dizzy and they directed me to sit down and drink some water as I could be dehydrated. Then they talked about common dizziness after massages and proceeded to tell me about a time when they gave someone a massage and when the client left, they got in a car accident. I was disturbed by the story but continued to focus on drinking fluids. The massage therapist left 15 minutes later. About 45 minutes later, I called the kitchen to send some coconut water, a banana and some cheese. I thought it was possible my blood sugar was low. Around 8 pm I went to bed, hoping that it was just a minor episode of dehydration and low glucose although the spinning continued after eating and drinking. In the morning I woke up and as I rolled out of bed, again felt the room spinning and became nauseous. At that time I called the front desk to ask about a car to Urgent Care. I spent 2 hours at Urgent Care to be told by the doctor I could have a "cerebral stroke" and I needed to head straight to the Emergency Room for a CT Scan. I spent 6 hours in the Emergency Room to thankfully be told I did not have a cerebral stroke and diagnosed with peripheral vertigo. I want to give you the facts of the story in case there are any future incidences, it could be a liability. I spent Tuesday evening in my room, all day Wednesday in the hospital, through my departure on Sunday mostly in my room trying to limit my movement due to the vertigo. My trip was more than ruined. I was extremely disappointed and disheartened Golden Door only offered to cover an acupuncture session while on property. I sent a letter to the Manager following my return home and they offered to take $2,000 off $12,000 on my next visit. I don't make six figures and don't have a lot of savings. I spent all year looking forward to this return. I had planned to return again next year if my finances allowed, but I will not be returning.

I signed up for my second visit. Several months before this date I was diagnosed with a fracture in…read moremy back. Called to cancel two months before reservation. Later they claimed they had no records oh my call and refused to refund my $4000 deposit. Offered to give me a six month extension. Out of desperation I said ok. I'm still under a doctors care for my back. My doctor offered to write a letter. They refused to accept that and refused to refund my deposit. No point going if I can do anything physical. No yoga no hikes no fitness exercises. Also a lot of walking between activities. So be sure not to get a medical problem or they will screw you over.

Encinitas is really nice so they have a great location! Parking available on the street, womens locker area also has shower and bathroom. The hot yoga class was solid however just way too hot for me as it was at probably 105F and with the humidity, was just too much for me. I used to practice this style a lot when I was in my 20s and 30s but lately I just dont enjoy how hot it gets, and because I sweat profusely, the shift in fluid loss and electrolytes is just too much for me. I usually have a headache after classes like these and thats what happened. I think I could have preemptively assumed this would happen and down a electrolyte pack (which I had on hand) but of course suffer fools gladly haha. Instruction was good and I deeply appreciated being able to practice on xmas! Thank you Yoga Tropics for being open on xmas. Id consider coming back to a less hot class. They also have a great intro offer which is $30 for 10 classes in 1 week, so you really can't beat that! Definitely give this place a try if you enjoy Bikram level hot!

Updating my review as I just returned for my second retreat with Mel, this time with a friend, and…read moreI'm happy to report it was everything I remembered and more. I'm so glad I went back to continue building on the foundation laid the first time. As a new mom navigating some professional uncertainty, this season of life is presenting very different challenges than the season I was in on my last retreat, and yet, I realized that my thought patterns had reverted to the same trap - a feeling that outside accomplishments dictate my inner value. It's been an incredible shift to feel that intrinsic value back in my body and my heart. Getting to experience the retreat with a close friend was an added benefit, and Mel did a great job tailoring the experience to be transformative for both of us. October 16 2024: This retreat was one of the best things I've done for myself. I was burned out and on a hamster wheel of work, worry, stress repeat. Out of sheer desperation I went online and booked an experience with Mel, knowing little about what was in store for me. Through her pre-session meetings, I got a better sense, but you never really know until you get there. From the moment I set foot on the property, I felt serene and taken care of. Mel is incredible in so many ways: as a host, a curator of experiences tailored to your specific energy and season of life, and a cook of amazing, nutritious meals. Best of all, she hones in on the practical elements of a spiritual transformation that you can take back to "real life" with you so that your shift transcends the amazing but brief time in the desert. It's been two weeks since I returned from the retreat and the impact is lasting. Most profound is the realization that my happiness is not contingent upon doing or achieving anything. This has removed a perfectionist tendency and (perhaps ironically) allowed me to be far more productive with less pressure on myself. When I meditate, I remember the look of the stars in Joshua Tree, and somehow, I'm accessing the same incredible feeling. If you're on the fence about booking this, all I can say is it's worth it.

Mel is "one of a kind" and her personalized retreat was absolutely transformative. She is kind,…read moregenuine and extremely patient. I felt safe with being real and exactly who I was without feeling judged or criticized by how I was feeling or what I was doing. She gently but productively guided me in such a way that was so deeply profound and moving for me. She helped me on so many levels (professionally, personally and spiritually -- all great stuff!). I cannot say enough good things about Mel - she is a rock and so grounded. She was exactly what I needed. Thank you Mel!
