Grandpa's was literally a few steps off the official route down Isham Street, so we took a much-needed detour to rest our hindpaws for a bit. Our requirements were pretty simple - chairs to sit down in, food to consume, and we wanted to make sure it was casual enough where we weren't dependent on unpredictable waiter/table service that could keep us there longer than we intended (which happened to me last year down the street at this same event). Check, check and check. Grandpa's is a pretty standard by-the-slice pizza joint, with a very small seating area near the counter, but also a larger, slightly more formal dining section in the adjoining room. We considered going in there, which probably would have been more comfortable, but honestly? After 16 miles of walking, the first chair you see looks pretty great. We were all loaded down with some scrumptious protein-heavy snacks, so at least for me, I just went with one slice. Honestly, most of the slices didn't look very appetizing - lot of rubbery cheese and chunky sauces. The best-looking of the bunch was the remnants of a white pie, so I went with that. Decent enough; my guess is that anything I had was going to be graded on a curve given my situation, but it was fine. This typically isn't the type of pizza I gravitate to (I'm a little bougier when it comes to this cuisine) but it was slightly overcooked just the way I like it and did what it needed to do. One of my other chums (the Millennial Chum) went pretty nuts and got a meatball parm sub, which was predictably an enormous portion - even given our strenuous activity throughout the day, she only got through half of it. It would have been massively alarming if this wasn't the case, but all of our items were heated up and provided within a few short minutes, keeping us ahead of schedule. The bathroom situation was interesting. All of us were in the midst of a delicate balancing act of hydration and bathroom usage in an event where restrooms are not guaranteed, so the ability to use a "regular" bathroom here was pretty clutch. The path to get to it was pretty circuitous - it involved walking to the back of the dining area and through a few hallways butting up against the kitchen and pizza oven areas before finally arriving at a room with a toilet. Definitely designed more for the staff than the public, but totally fine. The flusher was quasi-broken and literally had a piece of string attaching it to the toilet, but we take what we can get. Glad it was there, and I used it before and after our meal. Am I coming back? Eh, I'm inclined to doubt it but I wouldn't need to be dragged in kicking and screaming.

The garlic was burnt and the boiled broccoli was smeared in vegetable oil -olive oil or butter would have been the possibilities for the pan but this broccoli was never in a pan. The lasagna which is normally a winner leaked a lot of water into a puddle on the plate and that happens when it's frozen but not fully thawed and reheat din a hot enough oven. The Riesling was a bit sour but the some of the others are undrinkable. A quar which in Europe would be 2 and a half glasses in a little pitcher is 1 and a third glasses in a curious tiny vase, so order two individual glasses because there are no savings on offer. Which is odd as wine is an inflation anomaly - a decent bottle runs 12 to 20 dollars at a wine store and did 20 years ago too. For the prices these cheap wines are very bad value though some of the reds are less disastrous. The pizza is great and I have no complaints about it but the word is out and the delivery guys are humming at the door through diner bumping into the back of your chair in a small huddle if as we were you are seated there. It's a descent going down at this nice little place. It is a bar that serves decent snacks, but can microwaving and shrinkfaltion be far off? One suspects not, unless they hire some sous chefs who took a 12 week course at a culinary school - but they won't. There's no chef here.

And with so many options it easily allows for bar hopping. During this Summer of 2025, our large group concluded our mid-afternoon adventures at Saggio, a Southern Italian restaurant. It was the most heartfelt experience that my presence was genuinely invited welcomingly for inclusion. I am desired for my energy and my existence. Reservations for table of seven (7) was a smooth dinner. Price is reasonable as expected for 2026 stagflation and inflation era. Customer service is attentive to our party of seven and very accommodating to our reasonable requests. Cold water was served chilled and extra wine glasses were distributed among our party for one bottle of wine. Unfortunately, my favorite red wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo was unavailable which I suspected and believed to be a hard find. I opt for my second favorite red wine Chianti Classico from central Tuscany, Italy region which is available. This is a premium bottle that contains a Black Rooster neck seal as a member of the official Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico. There is a numbered DOCG seal, which is typically attached to the neck of the bottle confirms the wine's certification and compliance of Chianti wine classifications. This bottle of Chianti wine was very good. It has a dry, medium-bodied defined by bright sour cherry acidity. The bill was prepared and distributed the old school way handwritten on classic perforated "claim check" forms. Business cards are available for grabs which is added to my growing collection. Restroom facility is relatively clean. The atmosphere decorum appears rather dated particularly the ceiling of vintage dated with relief pressed tin tiles. The table cloth is red checkered gingham tablecloths which is popular in Italian restaurants for low cost, and create a rustic vibe. I think these red checkered gingham tablecloths are classic and timeless. This restaurant is ideal and the optimal atmospheric setting for couple first dates. It is not loud and does not emit boisterously loud background music. My foodie synopsis: Complimentary Italian bread with butter was requested and fresh with softness. I prefer olive oil to accompany bread. Lasagna Parmigiana with meat $22.00 Marinara sauce and the meat was a delight for my colleague. House salad $11.00 This is gargantuan portion size which I thought it was medium size, but not as a side dish. It surely tasted fresh. Arugula with white Goat Cheese pizza $25.00, small 14 inch pie (6 pieces) This small pie was enjoyed and shared with two people. It was fresh with high quality ingredients and very tasty. I actually taste the dressing. The Arugula vegetable was abundant. While the food was fine, the real issue with the restaurant was the environment. My partner and I were seated two tables away from an older woman who proceeded to take a very long call on her phone at the table, using her speakerphone setting. A short time later, another person at the back of the room started the same. Having two loud conversations throughout dinner due to someone on speakerphones did not make for a pleasant experience. The goal of any restaurant should be to create as comfortable an experience as possible for patrons so that they are encouraged to return. While the food experience would have warranted that, the lack of staff management over the disruptive issue of people on their speakerphones during dinner ruined the entire meal. My partner or I could have said something to the customers, but we feel it should be the job of staff or management to handle this, not the patron. And while some will say that this is the way of the world today, we can't accept that. There is a way to act in public, in polite society, which includes stepping outside to take a phone call so other patrons are not disturbed. Other than this significant issue, the waiter was friendly, the food service was quick, and the food was flavorful for the most part. The garlic bread was not of the quality we expected: The bread had been haphazardly coated with a garlic mix that contained very large chunks of garlic, and was not very enjoyable to eat. The bread itself ws simply a piece of French bread cut in half; again, not much effort put into the quality or presentation. One of us ordered Ravioli, and it was clear that the pasta had not been drained properly. There was significant water collection around the sauce. While we might try V&T again, we are inclined to hesitate the next time we are in the area because of this experience. We hope the management discusses this issue and decides to encourage patrons to step outside for their phone calls.
