When my elderly mother called to tell me her furnace wasn't working properly and the house was getting cold, I panicked, and after a quick Yelp search, called Oscar since he had great reviews and seemed like he might be in the area -- I was so relieved when he answered and said he could come in a few hours! When I got to her house to meet him and the furnace seemed to be fine, blasting away, I panicked again, thinking she'd lost it, and almost called to cancel, but am so glad I didn't. He arrived right at the beginning of the time window he'd given, and did a fast, efficient service check on the furnace. It was working fine, but it turned out that the dirty filter, in combination with her Nest thermostat, had likely been causing an electrical fault, so that it was probably not turning on sometimes via her Nest. Long story short, for a super-reasonable service fee, my mom is warm and not crazy, and I now know to change her filter more often. Our furnace started making this horrible noise - other people we talked to told us we needed to replace the whole thing. We knew we had to fix it because we use it year round, and it seemed like it was about to die. But Oscar was able to fix it for a very good price and it has been humming along months later. Of course my wall furnace/heater would start acting up when it gets cold. My pilot light kept going out and I had to keep relighting it, so I thought I'd have someone fix it ASAP before I froze my butt off. The place I usually call was booked through till the new year (about 2 weeks out at the time). I called several other companies in the area who were also all busy. Just as I was about to call my usual, I came across Bell Z Heating and Oscar told me he would be able to come first thing the following morning. He and his guys showed up on time and gave me a rundown of the simplest option which was to just replace the main parts. He said he would pick up the parts and come back to reinstall. He was a bit late coming back, but it's to be expected with the crazy Bay Area traffic and installed it as promised the same day. Brrr, I awoke to a freezing house on New Year's Eve. My stand-by heating guy was not available, nor was anyone else, save for Bell Z. Impressed by his skill, I asked him to look at my water heater, then inquired about central heating to replace the wall heater. He carefully explained my options and provided a quote that not only saved me about $5,000, but allowed me to simultaneously duct for AC, if I should ever strike it rich. Man... This winter weather came faster than I thought it would. We needed our heater fixed ASAP. I was working my way done the list of HVAC companies, and no one could come out to tell me what was wrong before the week was up. We also had one other person show up, tell us he needed to order a part, and fell off the face of the earth. Needless to say we were desperate. Oscar, the owner of Bell Z, is a total pro and a great guy. We needed to replace the ancient gravity heater in our 1915-era house in Noe Valley. Due to the location of the heater we got very high quotes from two other contractors. Oscar came up with a much simpler solution that didn't require as much duct work, and saved us about $3,000. He did the work all in one day while we were in Tahoe, staying until 9pm to do it. Great guy, very knowledgeable, great service - highly recommmended. read more

At about 2:00 on a Friday afternoon in the midst of a cold spell, my furnace stopped working. I called a few HVAC companies, but the soonest appointment I could get was mid-week, which translated to 6 days of freezing my butt off. I then found Bell Z and spoke to Oscar. He said he was finishing up a job, but he would come over when he finished, if that worked for me. Umm... yes please! He showed up shortly after 5:00 with his assistant and worked for a good three hours, managing to resurrect my my 1951 Lennox furnace. This man comes prepared. He had a retro-fit kit and all the other necessary parts in his truck (gas valve, electronic ignition, control module, pilot assembly, wire harness, aluminium tubing, etc). The new parts he installed are much safer and more efficient. For example, the new gas valve shuts off automatically if the pilot light goes out and only ignites the pilot light when the furnace is in use. Oscar also rewired the fan limit control so that it automatically shuts off if the furnace is overheating, e.g. due to a dirty filter. Watching Oscar work, it's evident that he really knows his stuff and doesn't cut corners. He's very meticulous and spent a good deal of time testing once all the parts were installed. And it certainly did not look like a trivial endeavor modernizing my old relic of a furnace. As far as experience goes, he worked in the industry for 14 years, then started his own business in 2009. Given the amount of time they spent (not to mention outside of normal business hours) and the array of new parts, I was expecting a hefty bill, but not the case. The bill was quite surprisingly low. When I was writing the check, I mentioned that the heat distribution throughout the house was not even, and in fact, two of the three bedrooms had very little to no heat. Oscar says he can take a look and climbs up in the attic. When he comes back down, he smiles and says - check the rooms now. Bingo! Alls rooms have heat and it's much more even. It turned out my tenant (I just recently moved back to the house) had, for some reason, closed the dampers in some of the ducts. Charge for the fix: $0.00. He also informed me that the insulating tape what wraps all the duct work was almost certainly asbestos. Not exactly pleasant news, but certainly a good thing to know. So here it is more than two months later and my dinosaur furnace is still working like a charm. Oscar is a hard-working, highly capable, honest and pleasant guy. After seeing the 5 stars reviews for Oscar on Yelp, I decided to give him a try. Called him to come check the furnace of a rental and he came the next day! First the furnace is located in the crawlspace awkward location. He diagnosed the problem quickly that the furniture was blocking the inlet and that the filter is very very plugged. He also took note of a very old thermostat that probably needs to be changed. He also inspected duct work and gave me an assessment of what the ultimate solution is. What I appreciate most is he showed the tenants how to change/clean the filter themselves and he took a lot of pictures so that we are on the same page. On another property, he properly sealed the ducts that the previous installer did a poor job on. He also showed me areas where things should be improved on if it was a new install. I highly recommend Oscar for his hands on approach, timely and responsive service and best of all, great communications all at a reasonable price! read more

Oscar saved the day! My heater was serviced by another HVAC company for a repair to the duct work following a blunder by a contractor I had hired to move and add heat registers. After the guy left, my thermostat didn't function-the heat was on all the time if in the on position-and he wanted to charge me a large amount to re-wire my heater. I didn't buy into his scam thinking this guy had likely intentionally wired the thermostat wrong to make a buck.
