So when it was time to order the cake of all cakes for my sister-in-law's baby shower last weekend, I knew I wanted to work with KD right away. I absolutely love KD's red velvet, its so tasty, rich and moist and the cream center is just the perfect sweetness that ties in all together for a perfect red velvet cake. Its not fluffy or dry, its exactly how a red velvet should be! One of our guests asked if the any parts of the cake contained nuts. I feel bad for giving them this review by I feel like people deserve to know what they are getting into. I ordered two cakes for my mom and my sister's bday, they both look pretty but the cakes was terrible. I will advice requesting a tasting session first before ordering your cake. I asked them if I can have one but KD said they will be on vacation and don't not have time to do it. I ordered mango cake and s'mores and here is the break down of my experience: Mango: Doesn't taste like mango at all. Some people said it was cinnamon, carrot, banana and all kinds of things but none have guess it was mango. Cake was super dense and dry, and I can't stress enough that I was NOT mango. S'mores: Over powering with chocolate chips and doesn't taste like s'mores either. Like the "mango" cake it was super dense, dry as if you are eating dry muffin. Heck, muffin from Costco is 5x better than the cakes they gave me. Basically, we took a picture of the cakes then threw everything away. I emailed KD about my experience and told her how terrible the cakes was. She offered a complementary 2 dozen of cup cakes but because of such a bad experience i will NEVER come back her anymore even for free stuff. read more

I stumbled upon Behind the Sweets on yelp, and I really feel bad giving them 3 stars, since KD and Nikki are EXTREMELY professional, friendly, and independent. If I could give them 3-1/2 stars I would... but I can't give them 4 stars - just not enough to say "yay, I'm a fan" I first met them when they kindly provided samples of 3 flavors we were interested in. 1- Cookies and Cream: generally, I LOVE cookies and cream, but this didn't taste anything like it. 2 - Caramel Mud Pie: generally, I don't like caramel, but this one was actually pretty good. (I know weird.) 3 - Strawberry: I LOVE strawberry cake, and though this one isn't the pinkest cake, it was really good cuz it had strawberries baked into it. Nice surprise. I also went over what kind of design I want, and how I want it look, what kind of other themes I wanted them to incorporate in the look. The cake came out really nice. They made the buttercream look really good (cuz I was adamant about not having fondant, cuz I love the look, though i hate the taste). But the cake was ok. The cake was heavy. And when we cut into it, I could see why. The cake was soooo dense. I don't think I seen one person eat their whole slice. I was hoping for something light and fluffy, and airy, and moist... well, it was moist, just not in an airy fluffy way. I would compare it to a dense muffin. Which totally sucks, cause the samples we had were way different. I expected a lot out of the cake, which is probably why I was a tad disappointed. read more

After reading reviews, looking at photos, and visiting their website I contacted them and asked if they were available on that day and if they were able to replica the Minnie Mouse cake that we found. All emails were answered in a timely manner which I give five stars. Also, I requested butter cream frosting for the main part of the cake and only the decor remain fondant which they said would work. Since BTS is an online business without a storefront, I scheduled to meet and pick up my cake at a local Starbucks. Delivery to Union City was available but decided against. She was on time with the cake ready and looking good. She loaded the cake into my van. I didn't get to chit chat much because I had one million things to do before my daughter's party. I wish she had taped the bottom of the cake base to the box because it sure was sliding from one end of the box to the other. Thankfully it only had a little nick in the frosting. Presentation: Design was spot on! Everyone loved oohh and ahhing over the cuteness of the Minnie cake. Frosting: The bottom layer was good but not great. I could still see the chocolate cake through the layer of pink frosting. Not sure what was going on there as I'm no expert on cake design esp. frosting. Flavor: Strawberry w. strawberry and chocolate with toffee bits. I've never tasted any of their baked goods so I went with safe flavors liked by most. Out of the 2, I enjoyed eating the strawberry. The chocolate didn't hit the spot for me and a few others but the toffee bits were a little surprise when you bit into the middle layer of frosting. Overall, the cake was flavorful and moist, not too sweet. Butter cream frosting was fine, what more can I say. I will say their prices are reasonable for custom cakes. I like to give small businesses a chance and I'm glad I did with Behind the Sweets. I would love to try other sweet made by the owners. We recently worked with Nikki at Behind the Sweets for a private corporate event. We ordered 200 cupcakes with a specific logo on it. I have to say that Nikki went above and beyond to make the cupcakes absolutely perfect. When a stamp Idea she had made did not work out as well, she ordered a printednedible paper so that the logo would really POP. The cupcakes were DELICIOUS, you could taste that they were fresh baked. We had Vanilla, Chocolate and Red Velvet. The red velvet was incredible, it melted in your mouth. The frosting was also amazing, I don't like most cupcake frostings, but theirs is thick, creamy and fabulous. She was a very reliable vendor, hard working, and everything she did looked GREAT. I'm honestly not really sure how i feel about the cakes ii had made by Nikki one of them i sent the exact picture of what i wanted my sons cake to look like and the smash cake i thought was going to be just a printed picture of a G with a crown on it . For my son's 1st Birthday, we had a luau and needed a cake that fit the theme... Behind The Sweets consulted with us about a month before the event and picked my brain to come up with the perfect design. We decided on doing cupcakes for our guests, and a cake that looked like a couple coconuts! The layout was great... A full coconut and a coconut crack in half. But they went a step further and came with a topper cake that looked like a sand covered island, and a stand filled with the aloha themed cupcakes, some with little coconuts (made from Whoppers candy) and some with little flowers. Besides the photo appearance of the the completed layout, the taste of the cupcakes was delicious... Sweet, but not super sweet, but very moist... Something, adults and kids can enjoy.
