This is a dog-inclusive bar, and for this reason I've never been. I am both allergic too and afraid of most dogs, and startle to literally every bark. Every time. So I have never gone in despite waking past at least once a week. Yesterday, someone invited me for a beer at Poor Phil's, which was closed at the time, so they changed the location to The Beer Shop, not realizing my dog issue. I was feeling brave, so I went in! Thankfully, no allergic reaction. There was only one small dog there while I was there, about 30 minutes, and the dog only walked by once, while leashed. A few tables with kids playing board games. A few folks at the bar. I really dug the vibe, and if it was pet-free, I'd totally come here more often! The bartender was super duper friendly, really cool. I got a cider on tap, and there were non-alcohol options as well, even saw a canned Diet Coke- my favorite!! I realize I'm not their ideal customer, with my dog challenges. If you have a dog, this looks to be the perfect spot for you! I wish I could visit again, but I think I'll pass as dogs barking indoors make me startle, cry, and flee. This is a great, laid back, dog-friendly place that sells a wide range of beers and ciders in bottles and cans, but also beers on tap. They have a ton of cool events (probably don't want to bring your dog on DJ night though - kinda loud) like trivia, a night market and the aforementioned DJ pop up. The beer selection is quite good. I can guarantee you'll find something you like. And you can buy a bottle or 6-pack and they'll open it for you to drink on premises. The staff is always nice and extremely helpful when it comes to suggestions and getting you something you'll like. Definitely check it out! read more

Very cool bar/bottle shop located right in downtown Oak Park. I love these type of places, "slashies" as they're sometimes called, as in half bar and half beer/wine shop, with the cans/bottles also available to consume on site. They had a nice draft list of about 20 beers, featuring a wide variety of styles and breweries. They also offer small/half pours which I like. The fridge had all the main styles of beer available, either in 4-packs or single cans. When we went on a Saturday afternoon, there was a live jazz band playing which was very cool to hear. The place is dog friendly so don't be surprised to see some when you come in. Only downside, which isn't their fault, is parking can be a pain in that area, especially on a busy weekend. Took me like 10 minutes to find a spot blocks away. But beyond that I was glad I got to check this place out. I'll definitely look for it again next time I'm in Oak Park. read more

We come here every time we visit family in oak park. Super laid back and casual spot with tons of beer (and ciders and what not). Dogs are allowed here and you can bring your own food in. This is a great little spot for both drinking beer and picking up beer! There's a pretty decent selection in their fridges for cans or bottles. They have pretty expansive draft list too. The second to last time I was there they overcharged me (based on the price sticker on the beer) and the last time I was there, the stockboy dropped some cans of beer on the ground which immediately started spraying everywhere with me quickly moving out of the way and narrowly avoiding the spray only to have him take the spraying cans behind the bar and into the sink where for some reason they started spraying out further and this time I did not avoid the spray which I thought was pretty obvious to him and he didn't even acknowledge it. This place is a neighborhood staple. I would describe it as a beer cafe, since many people come here to mingle, relax , or work. I've been going here since 2020 and was welcomed in with open arms by the community. I saw some of the poor reviews and it's a shame because I know those folks haven't been in more than once. Great selection of rotating beers on tap right by the CTA Green Line station? Yes, please. This dog-friendly bar is a no-frills BYOF establishment, meaning if you think you're gonna get hungry, go ahead and bring that XL pizza with you. It beats eating it at home alone--unless you're gonna buy a 6-pack here to drink at home with your pizza. (If you do buy a 6- or 4-pack here tho, you'll get 20% off a pint of draft beer, so might as well stay for a drink. Juuuust saying.) The only one down side may be that there's always a ton of dogs here and they allow dogs on the furniture so if you've got any friends with allergies, this it's gonna be tough. I was visiting a coworker at her place in Oak Park. It was midday on a weekday... a little too early to stop working so we took our laptops and made our way to the Beer Shop. What a cool place! We ordered beers and stationed ourselves on the high top communal table before relocating to a bench by the window. Thankfully there were electrical outlets because my phone and laptop were dying from doing work earlier. We lasted 1.5 hours (2 beers) later before calling it a day. The bartender was nice and helpful when it came to picking our drafts. Wide selection here. My coworker also bought a tall four pack of her favorite beer to take home. Have a children's birthday party in a more appropriate space, please. I come here for trivia nights, held weekly on Wednesdays and it's always a fun time. The MC does a respectable job and the questions aren't terribly hard. The lone bartender is knowledgeable about their beers on tap and I love the electronic display showing the type of ale, pricing, size (and style of glass it's served in), brief description, % ABV, and even the approximate color of the beer (which can be a very helpful tool in making a decision). Beer Shop doesn't have an on-premises kitchen, but on trivia nights the nearby 'Q' restaurant caters. Q is nice enough to bring small quantities of smoked wings (delicious), brisket, and hush puppies for free along with a trio of different sauces. The last two times, I was responsible for eating 95% of the pickles provided. #notsorry Bread = n/a (4) Circuses = 4 For being trivia champs during the week of 9/28/16, we each got to choose a large bottle of beer to take home. I naturally picked the coolest one, a bottle of Three Floyds "Skeletonwitch", which was a red sour ale with a 9% ABV and would normally cost -- get this -- $20. I took that bad bitch home compliments of the house! Beer Shop is BYOD (bring your own dog), BYOF (bring your own food), and BYO just about anything else. I wouldn't be surprised if you could just bring your own beer from home to enjoy here. But at any given time, there could be several poochies walking around the place sans leash, so be aware! So I was in here last night (Virgin Beer Shop Customer) with some friends, celebrating a birthday! I enjoy the concept. Bringing in "local" beers and ciders whether by draft or bottle... The staff is very informed about the products they are selling, the space is pretty neat... The communal tables and BYOF! These are all awesome things.... Yet as the night rolled on I did find two downsides... First and foremost, I love dogs. And I know that when a bar doesn't provide food services (ie have a hot kitchen) dogs can be allowed into bars but last night was just crazy. We felt like we were at a dog park. Dogs everywhere, leashes everywhere, barking! It did provide some free entertainment at times, but, come on. (Plus what about customers who may have dog allergies?? Paying customers, I could see this place be a huge turnoff to them). And second, this kinda hits home... Children should not be in "bars". While there, a couple walked in with a baby and had a couple of beers... A family came in with their child and while the parents had a drink or two (they did bring in a snack for the child) the child broke out her My Little Pony toys... And then there was another couple with a child, and she had to be almost 2. I would be okay with all this if this was a restaurant/bar with a partition and only have "families" to one side; but I know for a fact it not only made ourselves uncomfortable but you can see it made others pretty weary as well. As a bar owner I would think twice about the child aspect. (And they were there from 6ish to 9ish in the evening) But, as a whole it was really good; we just had a concern with the "children issue". I will be back and bring the husband at a later date to try some more "local brews". read more

BYOF, people! We stopped in here on a whim last night, and had a really enjoyable time. They have 12 beers on tap, most of them local options, plus two coolers of craft options to buy and take home. If you get a pack of something and just can't wait til you reach home, you're also allowed to crack one open in the shop and hang out. Thought that was cool. I really enjoyed their technology there too-- the beer menu was electronic, and when I checked in on untappd, next thing you know, my face is showing up in the corner for checking in there! I was impressed. The bartender was super nice, chatty, and able to offer education to help you choose wisely. Most beers came in two size options, which was nice too. They have a decent-sized book of local options that will deliver you food to enjoy while you drink some beers. They've only been open for two months, and are doing a fantastic job, but I think there is room to improve-- two beer coolers isn't a ton of space. I think the should look into more individual bottle and can beers for purchase, as majority in the coolers were 4 or 6 packs, and basically off limits to me because I didn't want to commit to a whole pack. They have a small back area that's being unused... maybe they'll add more fridges in the future? Either way, I'll be back! read more

As the season changes, so do the outdoor seatings accessible for dog owners. My friends and I were going to brave the brisk fall evening and eat outside the Q bbq, but thankfully, we were walking around the corner and saw this bar open. Saw two dogs and a sign saying BYOF. A true life saver! The digital menu showed real time availability of the craft beer and they had their chilled alcohol fridges ready for anyone that needs to save money and drink in bulk. The staff is so friendly and judgement free, I really enjoyed the entire time. While walking back to the car after a nice evening, we walked past the beer shop. It looked quite interesting from the outside so we decided to end our night with a nice brew before heading home. All I have to say is OMG, this place is amazing. It's got the bar feeling but a lot more vibrant then a regular bar. I can see myself heading here more often. It's a BYOD. Which mean I can bring my furry kids here while I sip on some good beers. They a local beers as well. Even though I only tried one kind of beer the ambience made it enjoyable. They have all types of board games that you can play while having a drink or two or however many you like. I'm torn. I baddddddlllllly want this place to survive and thrive but unless they make some major changes, I predict this place will be closed down in 18 months. There is a definite niche that can be filled for this type of craft beer house in Oak Park (see Poor Phil's long standing success) but this place has some fundamental flaws. I can't think of a single reason why I would come here over Poor Phils..... They do NOT serve food (fatal flaw #1) and they have less than a quarter of the beer choices that Poor Phils has. I stopped in while waiting for my family who was in another store down the street and I as much as I wanted to love the place, I just found my self underwhelmed. I was also annoyed that when I gave the bartender $10 to cover my $7.50 beer she presumed that change was all hers.... I'm not opposed to leaving a 33% tip but it would be nice if she let ME make that choice rather having a sense of entitlement as she just kept the change. She didn't even have the common courtesy to say thank you. If I see the place packed, I might give them a second chance but if it continues to be the normal crowd of 4-5 patrons and a disinterested bartender then I'll likely just head down to Poor Phils. read more
