Yesterday, someone invited me for a beer at Poor Phil's, which was closed at the time, so they changed the location to The Beer Shop, not realizing my dog issue. I was feeling brave, so I went in! Thankfully, no allergic reaction. There was only one small dog there while I was there, about 30 minutes, and the dog only walked by once, while leashed. A few tables with kids playing board games. A few folks at the bar. I really dug the vibe, and if it was pet-free, I'd totally come here more often! The bartender was super duper friendly, really cool. I got a cider on tap, and there were non-alcohol options as well, even saw a canned Diet Coke- my favorite!! I realize I'm not their ideal customer, with my dog challenges. If you have a dog, this looks to be the perfect spot for you! I wish I could visit again, but I think I'll pass as dogs barking indoors make me startle, cry, and flee. My buddy brought me a bottle of Yamasaki 12 yr old single malt which I drank sparingly @ the time the bottle retailed for $50/bottle. When the bottle was running low I went in w/the intent of buying another bottle. By then the price had jumped to $85.00. Now I can't even find this anymore except online w/exorbitant prices. This use to be available but the 25 yr old Yamasaki was named the No 1 single malt in the world selling for 1,000,000 yen (at the time roughly $9,600). Take Path B - the booze train - and anesthetize yourself against the aforementioned comments, but risk being too sloshed to leave at the end of the night. Even if you choose all the right options, there's no telling if a family get-together will end pleasantly or in a hide the knives scenario. This year erred toward a hide the knives kind of night, by the time I left I was in need of a drink (or three). After a failed booze run to TJ's, I headed for home racking my brain for a liquor store that might be open on Christmas. Fortunately, like a beacon, the lights of USA Beverage called out to me. The store isn't huge, but it has a decent selection of beer. You'll find a nice array of domestics in bottles, cans, sixers and cases. If you're on the hunt for craft beer or imports, you'll probably be disappointed; the selection was mostly mainstream brands like Sierra Nevada, Goose Island and Guinness. I was hoping to pick up some Strongbow, but didn't see it or any hard ciders. The one thing I didn't like was that there weren't prices next to many of the items. This place is convenient, but when I'm not on the hunt for emergency booze, I'd probably head over to Famous. They have a much more robust selection.
