    The bar

These days, with so many places focussing on craft ales it's easy to neglect old continental favourites, especially from macro breweries. I remember visiting here in 2009 and being seriously impressed with the range of beers on offer (I was 21 and I ordered a Desperados... a slippery slope indeed). These days I tend to be more impressed by a place with a lot of real ales on draft than with a long list of bottles. However, there's a time and a place for everything. In the height of summer, a bar with seats available outside and nicely chilled wheat beer at a reasonable price this is a great place to sit and lose a few hours. Bonus points for location because being on Merchant Square means you can always dash inside if the weather gets a bit too Glaswegian. They have recently expanded their beer menu, adding a lot to the craft ale options in order to ride that particular popularity wave. They also have wine and so on, if beer isn't your thing. As far as I can tell, 90% of the food menu is varieties of pie. I've not tried it, but anywhere that committed to pie has to be worth some investigation at some point, right?

Kind of awkward at first... the only other females in there were the two workers behind the bar. . . oh well. the place was pretty cool. they had different beers and drinks from a BUNCH OF DIFFERENT countries. from asian to european to american beers. got the strawberry beer and the peach beer. FLAVORED beer, i never even heard of flavored beer. i dont think scotland does food right but they sure do drinks right.

great place, great Craft beer selection, great owner very friendly

Nice selection of beers. Friendly, competent staff. Good prices, not crowded, and decent music. Great place to kick back a pint or three.

Ghost town empty on early week nights, it can get pretty cramped in there on a Friday night, so if you don't get a table you can look forward to standing in the aisle with folk barging their way by on the way to the downstairs toilets. It's a bit pricey in there - many's the time I've found a clutch of receipts in my wallet the morning after and felt a pang of regret. Unfortunately, despite the premium, the selection of beers is sorely lacking and those test-tube rack shots are best avoided unless you're after a really messy night! With a round of 3 Budweiser's swallowing up a tenner and Erdinger your next step up on draft, the price is more a reflection of the location of the bar, rather than of the quality of the drink or surroundings. The menu is short and sweet, but the food is good and arrives in good time, so it can be ideal for a quick lunchtime bite when it's not so busy. One thing to note is that due to the built-up surroundings there is almost zero phone reception in The Lab - you see a lot of folk out the front or wandering to Buchanan Street to try and get a signal, which makes it a pain in the neck if you're trying to meet up with people. To sum up I'd say it's a good bar to stop by once in a while, but the prices and the over crowding mean there's not much to love.

It also has a few outdoor seats and when the sun actually hits it it can be a really nice place to sit. They have a decent selection of beers and wines and a small cocktail list. The cocktails aren't anything extraordinary but they're pretty fairly priced (as are most of the drinks options here). They do also serve food, typical bar snacks mostly and again fairly inexpensive, but at the moment they don't seem to serve it very late. I think the food is more aimed at the lunchtime crowd. The staff are chatty and, if it's not too busy, will come over every now and then to ask if you'd like anything else to drink. It's not full waiter service and I do tend to go up to the bar to order but it's a nice touch that they're paying attention.

I went for "The Best Ever" Roastbeef sandwich and the name did not deceive. The beef was amazing and they did not skimp on the portion. I had the horseradish sauce on the side but happily added it back to the sandwich as it had a bite but wasn't overly spicy. I opted for curly fries to accompany my sandwich which were super yummy. My colleagues had a mix of burgers, pasta, wraps and they all enjoyed their food. I would happily go back here again and recommend it to friends!

Always seems to be busy and good to visit at any time of day or evening, if you can't get a seat right away, one will usually be free soon enough. Until this weekend I hadn't eaten here, presuming it was run of the mill pub grub. Wrong! I had difficulty choosing from the menu... I loved the sound of everything. I opted for a special; the Steak Philly baguette - at around £8-9 the dearest item on the menu. My friend had the italian sausage pasta. Service was quick and the food arrived piping hot after a short wait. Presentation was first class, and the food delicious. The steak in my baguette was flavoursome, tender and lean. The generous helping of steak was stuffed in the philly cheese -lined crusty baguette and served with salad and fries. Excellent value for money. It was the extra touches that made my Bar 91 review 5* instead of 4* one. A small but notable example being when I asked for a glass of tap water, it was served with ice and a wedge each of lime and lemon. And when a larger table came available, the staff asked if we'd like to move from our stool-seated bar - we stayed put, but it was great customer service. Looking forward to eating here again - the prices are excellent for the Merchant City, and quality is first class. So, now it's on my food-places list as well as drink-places. Yay!
