We visited this restaurant for the first time tonight for my husbands birthday. Although we did not have a reservation, we were able to be seated right away. The atmosphere was great, but the service was even better. I can't remember the name of our male server, but he was very attentive and made sure we were satisfied. My husband ordered the 20oz prime rib medium well and that's exactly what he got. He was surprised when he cut into it because restaurants rarely ever get it right. Not only was it cooked perfectly, it was tender. My 8 year old son ordered a burger with cheese that was quite large and for the first time ever he ate the whole thing. It's not bad, it's not good- just falls right in the middle. Ive heard several people rave about Beef and Bone. The outside doesn't look like much, but the inside is nicely renovated. The staff is friendly. The food was alright. Unfortunately the majority of the menu items had a certain mushroom sauce slathered on top. For someone that doesn't like mushrooms, that kind of sucks. I ended up ordering the salmon and thought it was just ok. The steaks everyone else ordered were alright, but again, slathered in sauce. The Beef and Bone is very pricey as well. I'm not one of those crazy foodies but I know a great meal when I taste it. My wife and I tried out the Beef N Bone for her birthday last week and it was so good that we came back last night to celebrate our wedding anniversary. This meal was even better than our first one -which was spectacular. Chef Michael took time out to visit with us at our table and we could tell he is passionate about his craft and it shows from the beautiful interior design to the courteous waitstaff and of course the fantastic food. My boy scouts and leaders were finishing a canoe trip on the Missouri River and were looking for a new place to eat steak after the trip. Our previous favorite restaurant had closed. I looked on Yelp and found Beef N Bone close by. Reserved space and hoped for the best! Well.... we were amazingly surprised by the quality of the service as well as the quality of the food. One adult sitting next to me said "this is the best rib eye I have ever eaten." I would give this restaurant 6 stars if possible it is amongst the finest eateries in the West! Food would have been good but server had 24 in room we were in. Table next to us were SO LOUD we could not carry on a normal. Conversation with family member. 2 teenagers with us were exposed to grown women talking loudly as if they were in a bar. Give them more alcohol. No regard to others in room. Long waiting between app. Salad and finally food. Waitress said there is nothing she could do regarding their behavior. Couldnt finish my dinner. Fun paying for expensive dinner bill to having to warm up steak in microwave later. As we left I complained to hostess regarding other tables rudeness She said nothing they could do about it. Apparently they were taunting my grown niece....again bar behavior I didn't hear what they said which was also mentioned to hostess. I could see if fast food prices comes with rude people. I'm not a big steak person, or beef for that matter, but my husband is. While visiting friends in Montana my husband was adamant about trying local Montana beef. Our friends took us here and my husband hasn't been able to stop talking about how great his steak was. He said it definitely was the best steak he had ever had. That's saying a lot. Very French influenced, hearty food heavy on cheese, butter, meat- what I might think of when I think "fancy Montana". We went on a Thursday evening and it was pretty quiet, but that meant the server spent plenty of time on us and the chef came out to thank us for trying them out. Very disappointing second visit. Knowing the chef is very particular about how the steaks are cooked, and having had steak that was much too rare for my liking the first time we dined here, I asked if he would cook my steak medium-well. No problem was the response; disastrous was the result. My steak was cooked gray and dry. When I pointed this out to the waiter, he scolded me for not asking for a particular temperature and that color is not the correct way to assess a steak's degree of doneness. Scolded! My wife ordered prime rib with the crab and shrimp dressing. When it arrived, the dressing was cold. When she pointed this out to the hostess, her response was "well, we'll have to find out what they're willing to do." Pardon? No apology or assurance that there would be a quick resolution? When the waiter came over, he disparaged my wife by saying he had watched them plate her food and that it couldn't be cold. Whatever happened to the customer is always right? They did take her plate back to the kitchen and brought her fresh, hot food. Unfortunately, underneath the dressing, perfectly heated, was the gnarliest piece of prime rib ever served. Seventy percent of what was on the plate was pure fat. What actual meat was able to be dissected out was tasty, but it required a surgeon to get it out. Given our unfortunate experience, you would have thought that the chef would come visit our table and apologize, but no visit. He did, however, spend fifteen minutes talking to another table while our food was being cooked. Maybe that was the problem. They actually had to interrupt that conversation and take him back to the kitchen so our food could be brought out to us. We were so excited to bring our son, visiting from out of state, to a real western steakhouse and we were so disappointed. What left the worst taste in our mouth, however, was not so much the problems with the food itself, but the haughty air of superiority projected by the staff. That sealed the deal. For the last couple of years we have passed this restaurant on trips from our home in Helena to Great Falls and points north.. We usually eat at another restaurant in Great Falls (but that is another story....) but have always intended to try this place. Anyway, we decided last weekend to call to make a reservation (good idea BTW) and drive up for dinner. Very short wait while they got our table ready, then were seated. We had salads, and a roasted Bone appetizer which was to die for.....Very good and were very impressed with the caliber of cooking shown us til that point. We ordered rib-eye steaks and after asking the server (also the Chef's wife) about the style of cooking as to doneness, we ordered med-rare steaks. We were assured that the Chef temps all the steaks as to do a correct preparation of the steak. When we were served, neither of our steaks had any pink in them. they were cooked at at least a med-well to well preparation. We were disappointed but after looking for our server (who disappeared after serving) we decided that we did not want to wait another 45 min to 1 hr to have our steaks re-cooked. Had we been asked about our meal when we had cut into those steaks, we would have sent them back to be re-done. After meal was over, we had to hunt our server down to get the check. She finally asked us how our meal had been, where I mentioned the over-done steaks.... She got fairly defensive saying that she hadn't had any other complaints etc etc.....I commented to my wife after she left that obviously no one else had been served the steaks that were served to us. I wont say that we wont be back, because the meal was excellent until the steaks got there. They do have seafood entrees on the menu and before I write this place completely off I would like to try a seafood dish. This time though, the rib eye was not up to par. I would suggest that as a co-owner of the business, our server might be a little more receptive to feedback about the meal. I am always happy to pay a premium for a great meal, but the Ribeye we both were served reminded me of the $9.99 casino special in Vegas. read more

We walked in on a Saturday night reservations on our way home from a fishing trip and they had no problem seating us. We felt silly because we had no idea what a fancy establishment it was. But even in our grubby get ups, we were treated so kindly and the food was AMAZING. The chef came out and greeted us. You couldn't ask for better service from our waiter. The steak was good but definitely over seasoned. I like to taste the flavor of the meat. A little too undercooked for a medium rare steak. It took one hour to receive our food. We were some of the first costumers of the night so maybe the chef was warming up. It is expensive but that is the price of quality meat. read more

On July 11, 2013 I took my family and my mother to Beef N Bone to try it for the first time. The interior of the restaurant is nice. It's a little bit of a hybrid atmosphere with TVs in multiple rooms with sports programs yet elegant tables and accessories. One could say they can't decide who they're trying to be. Our waitress Tasha was very friendly and provided very good customer service. This review is no reflection on her because she was very good. We started off with potato skins and eggrolls. We all thought it was somewhat strange that a steakhouse would serve eggrolls as an appetizer but what the heck. The eggrolls came out first and they were almost black from being overcooked. The only thing that saved the eggrolls was the sauce that came with them which made them edible. The potato skins were okay. We all commented about how much potato there was still in the potato skin. Nothing special with each appetizer. The blue cheese on the salad was actually pretty good. One problem though was the lettuce actually was dirty. It needed to be rinsed and cleaned better. One person in our party ordered Caesar dressing and that salad came with blue cheese crumbles and bacon on it which seemed weird. Not sure if they meant to do that, or if it was mistake. But in our mind, Caesar dressing shouldn't come with blue cheese crumbles and bacon. Of the six of us who ate there this evening, four of us had steak, one had the breaded shrimp, and another had the ribs. The tenderloin kebab was okay. The top sirloin was okay. The 14 ounce ribeye was the best steak but nothing better than what I cook on my own grill at home. In fact, we had just grilled steaks the prior Sunday and all commented that they were much better than those at Beef N Bone. The battered shrimp had too much better and the cocktail sauce was too mild. The best main entrée was the ribs. They were quite good. Only thing That could have made them better would have been to have extra sauce on the side. Overall the experience was bland and did not convince us to take another drive out to Ulm for dinner at the beef N bone. It was quite disappointing because we were really hoping for a hometown steakhouse experience. But quite honestly we get much better meals at a Texas roadhouse. read more

We chose this restaurant to celebrate my in-laws' 60th wedding anniversary. We had heard great things about it and when we made the reservation they seemed excited to have us. So it was pretty disappointing when the service started out poor and kept getting worse as the evening went on. The food was really good - no complaints there. But the service......... A tray of wine and water was spilled on us. Several of the salads had the wrong dressing. The waitress couldn't figure out who had ordered what. The juice from one of the plates got poured on us. She got snippy when we asked for glasses of water. Even with all the screw ups we were patient with her and didn't get upset. Which made it pretty unbelievable that her attitude kept getting worse and that she was downright snotty by the end. It felt like she was really annoyed that she had to wait on us. What really sucked, though, was that not one person wished my in-laws a happy anniversary or even mentioned that we were celebrating. We had heard how the chef greets each table but he couldn't be bothered with us. Our snotty little waitress certainly didn't offer any congratulations. A special dessert? Nope, that didn't happen either. We are starting to plan MIL's 80th birthday party. It's a sure thing that it won't be celebrated at Beef N Bone. read more

We had five less than mediocre dining experiences at Beef n Bone between 2013 and 2015. Each time, the food was mediocre, but the service seemed to get worse. During our fifth visit, in 2015, even though the restaurant was mostly empty, we sat for thirty minutes before anyone even brought us water, and that was only after I went over to C., the owner, to ask her why we had not yet been waited on. She did not seem to be the least bit concerned that no one had "checked in" with us. After the fifth visit, we decided our time and money was better spent elsewhere. Today we decided to try going there for dinner again, a full two years later, hoping they have been in business long enough that things have improved. When we arrived at close to 6:30 pm, there were four cars in the parking lot, and one pulling in the same time as us. Four people in the car that pulled in when we did started to go in the door ahead of us. However, two of them ended up standing off to the left, telling us to go into the building ahead of them, as the other two people had to go back to the car for something. When we got into the building, C., the same person referenced above, immediately asked me if we had a reservation. I said no. She appeared quite annoyed. I was surprised by that, as the restaurant obviously had many empty tables. She then wanted us to "check in" by giving her my name and phone number. I was also surprised by that, as we have never had to give our name and phone number to a restaurant unless we were making a reservation. C. was quite insistent. She appears quite determined to "put on airs." I had the same impression I had each and every time I had encountered her on our previous visits - her supercilious demeanor truly takes away from the dining experience. This is Montana - just being yourself goes a long way. The Beef n Bone is not a fancy restaurant. There really is no point in acting as if it is. The entire meal would have been much more enjoyable had she just let us order our meal without continually telling us what "the lady" or "the gentleman" needed. As it was, she did not listen even when we told her. Nonetheless, the food was okay - it was not any better or any worse than the last time we were there in 2015, still just mediocre. The kicker today was that when she brought the bill, she automatically said something about, "I'll give this to the gentleman", never once considering the possibility that I would be paying the bill. As I was just about finished writing a check to pay the bill, C. came over and loudly said, "We don't take checks - you will have to give me a debit card or a credit card." (Is cash not an option either?) As I handed her my debit card, I said, "Perhaps you could have told me that before I wrote a check?" She said, "You should have read the signs - there is one outside and one where you checked in." (I did not see either sign. I looked for the sign outside when we left. It is behind where the two people were standing who told us to go ahead of them. I did not see the one where we "checked in", possibly because C. pounced on me immediately to require my name and phone number just to eat dinner there.) A simple, appropriate response on her part would have been to have just said, "I'm sorry, you must not have seen the signs that say we no longer accept checks." I realize C. owns the place, so she can put on all the airs she likes, and be as rude as she likes, but her personality and demeanor alone makes us once again inclined to not take the time to drive back to Ulm for quite awhile, if at all. Great Falls is a small town with a minimum number of excellent restaurants. We do not need to "check in" to the ones worth going to, unless we are making reservations. We go to them often enough that they know who we are, and their owners genuinely appreciate our patronage. They do not need to "put on airs." read more

Service was good, portions were great, but I ordered the beef rib that was on special knowing it would be a little fattier than normal ribs. Unfortunately, there were only 2 bites of actual meat on this massive rib, the rest was solid fat. This was not a cheap meal either and when I asked the server it was brushed off as if it was normal/ok for it to be that fatty. Very unhappy with their response. Also, the entrees that come with apple/onion sauce was excessively covered and doesn't necessarily look appealing. This was a disappointing experience after reading good reviews. Great! If you go to Beef 'N Bone expecting a great steak or burger, you'll get it. I've read some of the negative reviews here, and I have to say the negatives are unwarranted. I did get a steak that was a little overdone once, and when the waitress asked how things were, I told her. She apologized and cheerfully returned it to the kitchen - where a new plate was promptly prepared and served. It was cooked to perfection. If you go to this establishment expecting fancy city food - you didn't read the sign out front. Beef 'N Bone. It's a great place to eat at a fair price. read more

Went to this restaurant last night. We had reservation and arrived a bit earlier but a table was prepared for us. Things went down from there. We ordered and the salad was served promptly. We ate our salad and then waited. Took a long time before the main course arrived. I had ordered the walleye with loaded potatoes. The potatoes were not even lukewarm. When the server came with the wine I had ordered I told her. She said they could give me another serving, warmer. I said no. I had already eaten half of my fish. This same server did not refill my husbands empty glass of water or ask if he wanted it refilled. His New York steak was OK even though I saw him removing lots of gristle. The price of the fish was reasonable. The steak was rather expensive for the size. We will never return. read more

I was hesitant to travel from Great Falls to Ulm to dine at Beef N Bone, but now that I've eaten there a few times, I'm SO glad I did. The atmosphere in the dining room is casual - warm and inviting. We've sat near the windows and near the fireplace and were comfortable. From the host/hostess to the waitstaff, every staff member is friendly and accommodating. The Snoqualmie Riesling is delicious, and a few other wines on their list looked like they would be worth trying. As if all of this wasn't good enough, the food is outstanding. You can tell that Chef Michael takes great pride in his craft, and the care he takes in the kitchen translates perfectly to the table. When we were in last, his wife, Catherine, happened to be in the dining room and she chatted with us for a bit - and this was after Chef Michael came out and visited with us at our table, as well. The prime rib was unbelievable - so delicious and tender and the au jus was out of this world. I had the Chicken La Catherine the last time we went, and it was fantastic - in a rich cream sauce with mushrooms, crab, and shrimp. We've had the potstickers and the soup, the trout - you can't go wrong with anything. The loaded potatoes are creamy and delicious. The house potatoes are perfectly cooked. My husband and I have been driving by this restaurant since moving to Montana a year ago and decided to try it for our 31st anniversary last night. The restaurant had a pretty upscale feel. We did get reservations but you probably could have just walked in as there were many tables which were empty when we were there at 5:45 pm. We were warmly greeted and our waitress was there within a few minutes. I ordered the top sirloin steak, well done with the loaded potatoes and a salad with the homemade blue cheese dressing. My husband order a full rack of ribs, loaded potatoes and a salad with the raspberry dressing. Salads were brought out, a simple salad but very fresh with lettuce, red onion slices and 2 tomato wedges with a seeded cracker on top. Very nice. The loaded potatoes were absolutely delicious!! My steak was perfectly cooked and not burnt at all on the outside with a herb butter on top...also delicious. The ribs were good. He said it was some of the best rib meat he has ever had although not the best sauce. I teased him he should not be allowed to eat ribs in a fancy place like this!! We went there for the first time tonight. We had been thinking about trying it for a while now. Interior was very nice compared to any other non-chain restaurant in the Great Falls area. I had the Walleye North by Northwest and was completely blown away. I normally don't order a fish entree but decided to try one here. I would absolutely order it again, the sauce was fantastic, the fish was cooked perfectly. My son's ribeye was cooked perfectly medium rare, my dad loved the prime rib, my son's girlfriend had the hunter's chicken and that is what I am going to order next time, it looked delicious. My wife had the buffalo hunter burger, it had a hamburger patty, sausage patty and fried egg on it, she loved it. I will definitely be back to this restaurant. There are too many things on the menu I want to try. If you want to say goodbye too the old dark and dreary steakhouses with the 40s and 50s decor that permeate the Great Falls area, you need to try this place. read more
