Came to town for the night after a long drive. All we wanted was beef a roo, our favorite! The dining room was closed and we wanted to sit down so we drove to the S Alpine location and the same thing, dining room closed due to lack of staff. We went through the drive thru. The food wasn't as good, cheddar fries were cold, chicken strips were small and they didn't give us our drink. The building had not been kept up either. This is very sad because beef a roo was always top of the line and always fresh. Dozens of people were trying to get into that dining room and then going across the street to burger king. Stopped through Rockford and was looking up places to have lunch. Never heard of Beef-A-Roo and stopped in. This place reminds me of an oldies diner. Wish music was playing is the only reason I rated 4. Husband had pork tenderloin, fries and shake. I had the chili and mushroom Swiss burger. Yummy!! Andre and Linda were the counter folks we interacted with and explained all well with our first time. Women's restroom clean. Men's clean but needed some love for the scent. Came back another day and had a beef specialty thingy, sorry cant remember that name and fries . Food hot, fries perfect saltiness. If you like Arby's, you'll love Beef-A-Roo... We happened here while starving on our drive back home from a long road trip and I have to admit the name caught my attention...cute. The best thing about road trips and a pandemic? Checking out new fast-food with drive-thrus! Sure you could bring a cooler full of fresh fruit from home, but we had already devoured that. I'll also shamelessly admit that we first stopped at Taco John's (just down the street). We'd never tried it before and had to check it out simply because it popped up on every "FOOD" interstate exit sign we saw..but that's another story for a Taco John review. Beef-A-Roo happens to be a Rockford and Northern IL thing only, with 7 stores to date and they've been around since 1967. Since hot beef sammies is what they're known for, that's what I ordered and just like I imagined (gut feeling, didn't read any reviews) it was almost identical to Arby's. Same thinly shaved processed meat but tastier...more of a 'roasty' flavor but also a bit drier than Arby's. I chose the Classic and they come plain..no sauce, but you can add cheese, avocado, etc. I really liked it, but then again I've always been an Arby's fan. Drive-thru was efficient with a short wait for our food. Sandwich was super warm and onion rings were so fresh out of the fryer, they scorched my tongue...good rings with a heavier batter coating. If your heart's set on burgers, chicken or a stuffed baked potato...they have that too. Even some healthy options like a Mahi-mahi fish sammy and gourmet salads. More than pleasantly surprised with Beef-a-roo's. First visit so ordered the berry chicken salad and a double bacon cheeseburger, no bun. Salad was fresh and raspberry vinaigrette were delicious. I eat here fairly frequently. I have food allergies so when I find a place I can trust. I usually continue going there. One time that I was there my food that was supposed to be prepared for an allergy I noticed was prepared incorrectly, even though I had told them that it was for an allergy. I brought the food up to the manager, and mentioned that it was supposed to be prepared for an allergy and what the issue was, without any further questions, she took the sandwich and restarted my order correctly. I understand that mistakes happen and it's totally reasonable, the way the manager handled it reassures me that this is a restaurant with proper training. read more

Being a native to the area, I have to express my love for this ma & pa restaurant. I have come here for well over 15 years now and continue to do so, all while finding new, delicious things to eat! When you're in town, be sure to stop by and grab the fries, grilled cheese and turkey avocado jack wrap - all of which are my go-to's! The beef and cheese sandwiches, baked potatoes and wraps are all very good in general as well - big beef wins in that category for me. Have you had their shakes people? There's always a line but it goes pretty fast. I am partial to their bacon cheese burger but the kids love the mushroom burgers. Beef-A-Roo is a Rockford original and you wont find it anywhere else. It's like if Culvers and Arby's had a baby and that baby went on to be much smarter than it's parents. They are perhaps best known for their roast beef sandwiches, and what I normally get is a Wild West Beef in the big beef size. But what insiders most know them for is their cheese fries. I dont know what so special about them. They are just cheese and fries. But somehow it's the right amount of the right cheese on the right fries with the right amount of salt and equally distributed so you dont end up with some drenched fries and some dry. They know what they are doing here. The malts are also excellent. The burgers are ok. Better than a lot of fast food, but not exceptional. read more

Great experience at a Rockford local must-do. The name doesn't do this restaurant justice. It is very good and has many choices. My son had chicken fingers and fries, they are pretty standard fare, good, but nothing spectacular. I got the highly recommended cheese fries, they were also good, but I wouldn't need to do them again. I'm just a ketchup kind of gal. I also got something I already want to eat again, and it's only been 2 hours. I got the Turkey Avocado Jack sandwich in the wheat bun. It was delicious. I am really looking forward to going back to Rockford, strange statement I realize, to get this sandwich ;-) We finished off out meal with a Mint Shake, on special for $.99. Had their Rueben sandwich and it was not good. First off, a rueben should be made with true rye bread and not a rye bun. Second, there was a smattering of 1000 Island dressing on the sandwich, that you couldn't even taste. Sandwich was luke warm when received. Don't let the silly name fool you, Beef-A-Roo knows how to do burgers right. Apparently all Beef-A-Roos have a theme, with this location sticking to a 50s diner motif. On a visit from NY, I was brought here by some friends who never miss an opportunity to stop in. As the reviewer below mentions, the cheese fries are not to be missed and their bacon bleu burger and chicken tenders hit the spot as well. Top it all off with one of their delicious thick shakes (I chose the mint chocolate) and you'll be walking away stuffed full of good ol' American fare! As a Rockford native I am probably biased as to where to find the best food, but this is my must visit restaurant every time I come home. They have an array of different choices for every one. My favorite is the pork tenderloin with cheddar fries. Their shakes are the bomb too. There is ample seating space and each location has a different theme. When my wife and I are in Rockford, we always stop at Beefaroo. Their cheesy fries are delicious and very inexpensive. Try a Big Beef with Cheddar cheese as well. Given some of the reviews we were let down. This Portillos-like restaurant misses the mark on so many levels. The burger (which should be the specialty) was just a frozen patty drenched in ingredients. The fries were like the small scraps at the bottom of the pan, soaked in cheese sauce. Today May 13 2020 me and a friend went thru the drive thru at beef a roo on south alpine. Upon ordering are food has we were going home to eat and chill for a while noticed are food is cold and didnt taste up to standards. I figured for 13 dollars for 2 sandwiches and a fry it would be up to par for the price. Beef-A-Roo, how I miss you so. After moving away from the Rockford area, I found myself craving this place on numerous occasions. So anytime I go home, I HAVE to stop in at least once. When I first told my fiance about this place, he was laughing at the name and questioned how good it was. Now he's the one asking me when we're going to be able to stop by during our visits. They have so many different options for so many different tastes. Burgers, roast beef, turkey, chicken, and vegetarian options too. Now when I stop in there always seems to be something new added to the menu as a seasonal item. And their shakes are top notch. Not sure if they still have the orange or peanut butter as seasonal flavors, but snatch them up if they do! So freaking delicious. Only thing I will say is that this location does need some updating. All of the other locations have been recently built or updated and I feel like this one has been kind of left behind. Food is still amazing though! read more

I am not sure what has happened to my old Beef A Roo. Last night I had a cold, old tasting baked potato. My husband had cold fries and a chili in a nasty card board cup. The two previous visits here have had similar problems....potatoes that are black inside, salads with big hunks of bad lettuce, bad fruit on the salad. Yep we always return them and get it made right, but you shouldn't have to do that every darn time. They know when they cut open a potato and it's black inside! read more

The worst fast food you can get! People who eat here have no tastebuds or regard for real food! Go across the street to Burger King to get yourself a real burger. My mushroom Swiss burger was as thin as white castle, with horrible nasty onion rings on it, and disgustingly slimy mushrooms from a can! A mushroom burger should have onions, not onion rings. This place should NOT do the "trendy burger" thing. This was the worst meal I've had, and I cant believe I just wasted money on this garbage.
