My wife and myself have been to the Charleston Hotel probably about ten times, we are not from South Australia so only come here when visiting friend. I am not a massive beer drinker so cannot comment on the quantity or quality of the beers. But l can comment on the pub itself and the food served. You are immediately greeted on entry by the hosts, the service is quick and efficient and they do a pretty good house Shiraz. There is a great selection of "pub classics" on the menu and l can definitely recommend the bangers and mash with onion rings on the side. The food is always served quickly and piping hot.

In actuality Camelot Castle is one of the few remaining quirky, hidden gems of the Adelaide Hills. Still, it is a castle. With loads of stonework and battlements, and inside, a few decorative shields and swords, there is no shortage of character. One aspect of medieval times that could be left in the past is the gloom of the main dining (or banquet) hall. The low lighting does work well with the traditional exposed timbers, but it feels a little like a dungeon when you come in from the bright of outside. The food and drink are excellent, and the house wines whilst looking like cheaply labeled clean skins are a world better than the goon you might otherwise expect. The location is Camelot's best feature. Often when people say hidden, they mean "not many people know about it yet" or "it's just off the main street" but in this case, it is literally hidden. In an orchard filled valley, tucked in against the side of a steep hill, the entrance is only visible for a moment before you're around the next corner. Also, due to the terrain mobile phone coverage is near non-existent, which also affects the accuracy of phone GPS. Don't panic, it's nice countryside to be lost in.

It felt somewhat older than many of the other pubs in the area, which I have to admit was pretty cool, and there was a nice verandah out the front where one could sit, though I have to admit that the foot traffic isn't particularly huge. Still, as a place for a beer it isn't too bad, even though the beer selection isn't particularly huge.

There is a small dining area that had plastic table clothes with plastic chairs. The bar area was very narrow all round with seating on stools only. So...with a genuinely tired looking pub what makes it good..... well that would be the prices! $5 for all aussie pints and $6 for all imperial is an excellent offer. Also on offer is a range of different shots such as Jager Bombs, Jam Donuts and Skittle Bombs...which is a little strange for country hotel. Unfortunately we never got to eat here as we went on Pageant day and didn't think i would have to book - turns out i was wrong so the limited dining area filled very quickly. However the food i witnessed look going to people looks to be good serves of everything and i will be head back one day to try! When i get to try the food it may up the stars...but for a place to drink there is better available in Lobethal if you dont mind paying a little more!

By chance we swung in here on a cold Saturday afternoon to grab a bite to eat for lunch when we were in the area earlier this year. The front bar is what I grew up being accustomed to as far as country pubs are supposed to be. Basic watering holes for (mostly) the old boys to come in and sink a few quiet ones, not talk too much and maybe listen to some TripleM-esque good ol' Aussie rock and roll. It's a simple life and having lived it in a previous life, I can say it kicks *rse. But the dining area of the Oakbank has come alive lately, with a well-reputed 'all-you-can-eat' ribs night held every Tuesday. For those of you who are paying attention, no we did not get all you can eat ribs. But they do offer beef ribs on the menu as a regular mains item, so that is what I went with. I was not disappointed. If I have some tasty, juicy slow-cooked meat and a dark beer in front of me, a fire or some decent heating and my missus with me, I'm in winter bliss mode. Good service at a good rate, with a warm country vibe. Pretty simple stuff and you get it in spades here at the Oakbank. The outside space is perfect for summer where families can sit and children can go play. For winter the indoors seating area is beautiful. Not surprisingly, they also have German beer available, though I should point out that the German Beer is only from a single brewery, and also seems to be much more crafty than the ones at the other pubs. Still, this is a pretty cool pub with a great atmosphere, and the staff are really nice as well.

We didn't have a car and didn't want to Uber separately to various cellar doors/vineyards so stopping here was a nice alternative. We got to try a bunch of local wines and also learn about the region. The tasting was only 5 Australian dollars per person...can't beat that!! Later in the day, also walked into the hahndorf inn pub part for a drink and quick bite before catching the metro bus back to the city. Split a beer tasting flight with my husband and the pretzel/2 dips appetizer. Delicious pretzel with a red pepper dip and then some type of rocket/bean dip. The flight showcased 4 classic German beers. They were mostly light, crisp, and refreshing with the exception of a darker ale. Nice spot to grab a beer and bite to eat if you like German pub fare.
