Not happy at all! Took in my car for a tire tobe mounted and balanced and to have the cabin air filter checked to see if it needed changed. I was told $61 if they replaced the cabin air filter and Roughly a 45 min wait. I left went to subway nearby and got lunch. I was called and told that if they were going to take the time to check my cabin air filter they were going to change it and it would actually be $75 because it was "difficult to get to". I said that's fine. 15 mins later I get another call and I'm told that the tire I supplied which was used had a hole in it and the had to fix that and it would not be $90! I came back and watch for a good 20 mins and not one soul was working on my car. Ended up being nearly 2 hours. So cost me more money and time then originally quoted. Service advisor was kinda a dick to. WONT BE BACK! I'm also guessing it cost a little more to have them clean up after themselves! But what can you expect when they "don't enjoy you as a customer "! I made an appointment at Beck's Auto Center in Lafayette, IN on September 9th, 2019. When I got there to drop my car off, I went inside and told Rob I had an appointment at 4pm. He already seemed frustrated and seemed to take it out on me and my friend. My friend told him that there was a warranty for the car, and he seemed annoyed about it. Then Rob asked for the policy number and turned around from us and walked away.. We gave him the information the warranty company gave us. Rob said it was gonna take about 45 minutes for the service. They called 50 minutes later to just tell us that they hadn't even started on the car, and that they have been on the phone this whole time and still haven't figured out the warranty. I am confused on why they would wait so long to call to update us on the issue. (We were expecting to have it almost or if not all the way finished at this time). When Rob finally did call back, he rudely told me that I did not give him the right information. We then gave him the information that he needed, but at the end of the conversation he told me that they couldn't do anything more today because at that time the warranty call center was probably closed. I asked if i was going to have to leave my car there or if i could come pick it up, his reply was "Yeah, we haven't even touched your car". When I was arriving to the shop, I passed Rob in his truck as he was leaving, he looked right at me, rolled his eyes and shook his head with annoyance. So today, September 10th, I called back and talked to Ben, and he said he called the warranty company again. He gave them the information we provided. He then told us that the information that they asked for and we gave was also not 100% correct. When we gave more information that he asked for, he let me know that he would call back with the new estimate. When he called back he said that the warranty would cover some of it. I was glad to know that finally my car was going to get fixed. But my troubles were not over. When I first called and got my estimate they said it would be around $138. Today AFTER he told me that the warranty would cover some of the cost somehow the estimate was MORE $150ish. When I asked why it came out to be more, his answer was "Because we spent 3/4 an hour on the phone with the warranty company". I was SHOCKED! I have never heard of any car shop trying to charge for this. I will NEVER recommend Beck's Auto Center to anyone. They are EXTREMELY RUDE, completely made me feel horrible for not understanding THEIR profession. And apparently they come up with random policies to charge you for. read more

I had a great experience with Beck's! I go to school in the area and had no idea where to take my car. I went into Beck's and Jeff helped me at the counter and walked me through their whole process. He was super helpful and very nice. Ben communicated with me throughout the process and they gave me a full rundown of all the issues on my car. I have had a wonderful experience at Becks auto before. They did a rear pinion seal on my truck a few months back. When the pinion seal was done, the nut was overtorqued, which caused the yoke to break. I assumed the pinion seal just went bad and had another shop (that maintains my fleet of trucks now & is very trustworthy. Not a hole in the wall shop trying for money.) After this shop broke into things, I was quickly informed that the pinion seal was not the issue. The issue was that the nut was overtorqued and cause the yoke to break which in turn caused the pinion seal to tear and leak. That shop then fixed the problem and replaced what needed to be replaced. I picked my truck up, and brought the paperwork over to Becks after they called the mechanic. Becks did not have any issue reimbursing me for the repairs as it wasn't done properly to begin with. I commend Becks for their wonderful customer service and willingness to help make things right. Marc in particular has done a phenomenal job and is awesome to work with. My car wasn't starting because of a bad starter, and I got stranded in West Lafayette. I brought it here after looking at local auto repair reviews and am glad I did. After coordinating with them over the phone, I brought my car in and they had it ready the same day. They were helpful and friendly throughout. However, the main reason I'm giving them 5 stars is because of the information they gave me after inquiring about my AC repair. The AC compressor in my car has gone bad and I need the whole system replaced. I had brought my car into a different auto repair shop to look into AC repair and had been quoted a flat price. The guys at Beck's had informed me of different options for AC replacements such as scraps and getting something brand new. We went through the different options and the different prices. I found I trusted them more after they had explained the process with me. At least more than the other shop had done. read more

I didn't know what to expect from the website/other yelp reviews, but this is a fully fledged repair shop with multiple service bays and mechanics. It's run a little like a Firestone- a couple guys running the front desk and no interaction with the mechanics, but the front desk guys seem to know enough at least to understand the mechanics notes. I was able to quickly schedule an appointment to diagnose an engine light. Staff were friendly and seemingly knowledgeable, and followed my requests for waiting or my approval before any actual labor. They discovered two issues- one related to the engine light and one just in passing, but when I pressed for how hard they looked for the cause of the engine light they said they were very busy and didn't have time for "complementary" service checks, which was odd because I was paying for a diagnostic and want to make sure that if I make this large and expensive repair that it will fix the issue. To my knowledge, the part they say needs replacing can only be inspected with body elements removed, so if they truly were too busy to look for more than one cause I am hesitant to believe they had time to truly inspect this part. Rating would be 5 stars, but when charging for parts they add overhead costs (my $50 part was quoted for $70, from the same source) which is an odd thing to do in the age of the internet where I can quote things myself. I will probably return for labor, but source parts myself. read more

Why did you evade the fact that I was able to drive my car to your auto-repair store without any difficulty, but I had to get it towed to another transmission repair store after your inspection? You were talking about data, this is it. Why not your explain, I had to tow my car to another transmission repair store on my own expense anyway, why did I need to park my car at your lot that very day? Let me update. My car was screwed too late in the afternoon for tow service to come. Think about it, your car had some problem but it functioned, you drove it to Beck's to get the problem fixed, after their 20 minutes inspection the car was returned totally unable to drive, and you needed to pay tow service to tow your car to another auto repair store. Think about it my friends, wouldn't you wish you had never been to Beck's at the first place? Would you be happy about it? Yet, I was being nice and patient to them, and did not even complain. All I asked was left the car at their lot and towed it later. And because I wrote what I truly experienced on yelp, I received a phone call from them asking me to tow my car immediately, threatening to charge me $40 per day the next morning. My mechanic is sort of like my dentist. I wish I never had to see them, but they keep an essential part of my life in good shape. And having found Beck's, I feel fortunate in knowing that my mechanic is also as competent as my dentist. The family wagon has over 110k on it and was in dire need of all new brake pads and rotors. Beck's gave an accurate quote (actually came in about $50 under), and did the job in one day. Also replaced a cooling system sensor & made that annoying "check engine" light go away. Labor rates are fair, and parts are marked up reasonably (say about 10-20% over retail). The staff is friendly and they explain everything in layman's terms when asked. It's a far cry from the fleecing one gets at the dealer. If you're going to be shelling out cold hard cash for a necessity, it's nice to know you're not being robbed blind. read more

Work was done promptly while I waited. Got almost an entire exhaust system redone for less than 400, everything minus the converter. Overheard a manager talking to another customer, the customer was being a bit unreasonable and had some unrealistic expectations, but the employee continued to be courteous. I have come to Beck's a few times over the years and was always satisfied but today I had a totally dIfferent experience. I called a few weeks ago to get a quote on brakes for my 2014 dodge van. Whoever i spoke with said $150-$250 depending on if the pad and rotors need to be replaced. So based on this i scheduled an appointment. Today I drop my car off and find out that it will be $45 to look at the brakes and then they call and quote me $450 and that is not replacing anything but resurfacing the rotors and flushing the brake fluid. But after calling other places i was told that if you resuface the brakes the pads have to be changed but they are saying they don't have to. Another shop said if you don't you'll be back in a few months to replace them. Seems like a way to get more money. I was shocked when i heard $450 based on what i was told a few weeks ago. When i questioned why i was quoted that price he said he spoke to the owner and service manager and they laughed, like i made this up. I assume they were pricing per axel but i was not made aware of that when i called and i am not a mechanic so I would have no idea. So i paid them $45 for nothing bc had i known the actual price i would have waited or did some more research. Of course, i understand that quotes can change but this is a pretty huge difference from what i was told. And then to treat me as if this was my problem. I won't go back or recommend them to anyone again! In response to his very professional response.....My mechanic friend was other shops in Lafayette. Your professionalism really showed yesterday and in your response. If nothing needed to be done why quote me for something that would cost $450????? Strange. Rock Auto is local somewhere the same as the middleman out of Indy. If they are interested in growing the business they should look into not charging loan shark prices for the parts They put on your car. If I can buy them for cheaper I know they can they just charge outrageous prices because you have no other choice. This common practice with car repair. They were cheaper than Midas. read more

I'm so glad the Lafayette area has a trustworthy/honest car servicing business. My tires had been making a noise which had me worried so I took it in to see what the noise was. They didn't charge me at all for any of the check up stuff! Both the noise inspection and wheel alignment test were free and when I asked to get the wheels aligned, they charged around $98. That's a little more expensive than usual but it's close to the ball park and the service was so excellent that I didn't mind. I'll be taking my car here for sure for car trouble! read more

Great service, very helpful staff and a detailed, thorough report on the car, for a nominal price. I went in without an appointment, and they were kind enough to service my car without any notice/appointment. They checked the cabin air filter (maintenance log suggests replacing it every 7500 miles) and found it to be extremely clean, hence no need for a replacement. It was very refreshing (and surprising) to hear an honest assessment in a car service center. I'm pretty sure most other service centers would have charged me for this without actually replacing. Will definitely visit again for my future servicing needs. Purdue students can avail a 10% discount, but you must let them know in advance, before the service is done. On top of this, every fifth oil change is free! Location tip: It is construction season, so it might be a bit more difficult to enter via US-52. I returned his call on my lunch break and am very happy I did. We discussed the details of the situation even though it occurred well over a year ago. He said to me "I wish you would have just called me so I could have had the opportunity to make things right" and I feel like he did just that with this conversation. This is a lesson learned for me from a customer standpoint - businesses need us to tell them when they have not met our expectations so they may make corrections for the next customer. Today was the 1st time he and I had actually talked about this. Rob seems dedicated to delivering quality care to his customers and I honestly believe he would have made things right, had I given him the chance. That's my mistake. Had this review actually posted when I initially wrote it in the week after the "alignment", I'm confident this guy would have actually taken care of the situation. Rob didn't ask me change this review or up the Rating any. He actually asked me to leave this review up so he could provide some feedback/insight for his loyal and new customers. Don't make the same mistake I did and take to the internet without trying to resolve anything. *** Original Post on 3/3/2014 (revised) *** I was quite possibly more frustrated with this place than if I were working on my own car without any tools. Because they couldn't figure out the few total steps to align the front end of a 1986 VW Golf, I was forced to pay approximately $600.00 labor for an alignment and my keys... This happened around August or September 2012 and I have since moved away from Lafayette, but this was the worst experience I have ever had, so I felt it's probably best I share. Some insight into the situation: I am no certified mechanic, but I know how to work on my vehicles and I owned/followed the Bentley Repair manual for my vehicle when I did work on it. I replaced a bad power steering rack, the hoses from the rack to the pump, ball joints and tie rod ends, and sub-frame bolts without any issues. I even aligned the vehicle following some of the most basic methods. The methods are really only effective on a simple car like this 86 VW Golf. I became convinced to get the alignment as shops have "special tools" and can get all the angles mapped out for a" perfect alignment". This was total BS. I dropped the car off and received a call later that they were having some issues and it would be an extra day. The next day I got the same thing. The next day I got the same again and when they "got it as close as they could", I was told that the labor was going to be a bit much, but they justified it as their Tech's did the "best they could". Also total BS. They made me pay $600 dollars and gave me a car that drove straight, the driver wheel was perpendicular to the group by eyes view, but the passenger side front wheel had the degree of camber similar the rear wheels of a "stanced" Honda Civic. Unfortunately the car suffered a starter issue and had to be parked for a week or so while I recovered from the costs of the worlds worst alignment efforts. With the car on jacks and the starter issue resolved, I checked the passenger side wheel only to find the bolts that hold my control arm to the strut tightened to torque specs achievable by a 1st grade underweight schoolgirl. I could move the entire assembly around with very little effort. THIS is the reason they couldn't get it aligned. At this point I took it upon myself to follow the write up previously mentioned and properly aligned my vehicle in 20 freaking minutes. With everything tight and no longer a death trap, I took the car out for a drive and it drove perfect. I drove this car daily until last month when I sold it to purchase something newer. It had no toe-in, no toe-out, no camber, no caster - all accomplished using primitive techniques and basic math, measurements, and tools. Take a look back at my update on this shop. I attribute this issue to a tech no longer here. My experience was awful, but new or returning customers have nothing to worry about. Thanks for the call Rob. read more
