It's not just about discovering what to order and what to avoid, but also learning how to eat and enjoy the local food. On our first night in town, we ventured out on our own and stumbled upon this place. We usually trust the locals when deciding where to eat, and seeing a steady stream of people coming and going made us think the food must be good, right? The prices were reasonable, too, so we decided to give it a try. Now I understand why it's popular with the locals, especially if you're dining on a budget. Since we weren't particularly hungry and just wanted a few small bites, we ordered garlic chicken, some empanadas, and mini Cordon Bleus. Oh boy, the garlic chicken was a struggle! The garlic flavor was overwhelmingly strong, and it tasted like undercooked garlic butter. After just two bites, I had to stop because it was simply too much for me. The empanadas were overly fried and greasy, which made them less enjoyable. As for the mini Cordon Bleus, they looked nothing like the Cordon Bleu we were familiar with, and the taste was different, too. Maybe it was the cheese, but we couldn't quite put our finger on what made them so different. Thankfully, it wasn't a complete loss. Our server was very nice, and good service always counts for something! Would I recommend this place? If you're traveling on a budget and looking for an affordable meal, it's worth considering. We ate at both Bebo's and Los Piños -- our two attempts at typical PR food. Both errr fine, but Bebo's was our favorite of the two. It has a small parking lot in the back, which was a huge plus. Service was nice and our waitress was truly bilingual-- able to help us understand nuances of between the Spanish we use in California and Spanish in PR. The mofongo was really good -- better than any time we had it in the past or during the rest of our trip. The ropa vieja was good, but standard. My son had the churrasco (skirt steak) and it was excellent. We ordered sides of amarillos (sweet plantains) and they were the best ones we had the trip -- soft, juicy, with caramelized exterior. Everything we ordered was flavorful, comforting, and clearly prepared with care. My mother even commented that the arroz y habichuelas reminded her of her grandmother's cooking, which is probably one of the highest compliments a Puerto Rican restaurant can receive. The meal felt authentic, homemade, and deeply satisfying. I ordered the stuffed avocado, and it was absolutely to die for. It was one of the standout dishes of our entire trip. The staff was attentive and worked hard to keep things moving despite how busy the restaurant was. You can immediately tell that this place serves a very high volume of customers, and for good reason. The only thing that may confuse first-time visitors is the seating process. People generally line up in the hallway adjacent to the dining room and wait to be seated. At first, it can feel like organized chaos, but the staff clearly knows how to manage the crowd. Given the popularity of the restaurant and the amount of people coming through the doors, the system works. The quality of the food for the price is outstanding. We come to Bebo's every time we visit Puerto Rico and it's always great, but not tonight. We had several Appetizers, Salchichas al Vino and Calamares Fritos. The Salchichas al Vino were delicious, but the Calamares were extremely chewy, so much that we had to return them. The waiter did his best to rectify the situation by getting us fresh ones, but although there was an improvement, they were still chewy. I wasn't that worried about the Calamares, because I had Mofongo Relleno de Camarones en Salsa Criolla coming, but sadly it was another disappointment. They also have drink options that our server listed to us. To start, we ordered the lobster empanadas and sangria. The empanadas were delicious! Very tasty and fresh. The sangria however, was not great. It just tasted like juices that don't really work together. I couldn't taste the wine. We ordered the roasted pork and skirt steak. The steak was really tasty, and juicy. But the roasted pork was very dried and hard. It had some good bits in it but there were quite a few pieces that were too cooked to eat. This place is SO addictive! The BEST and most authentic Puerto Rican experience. First: Mariana was a gem! She worked hard to accommodate us and took care of our table with care.
