DO NOT GO TO THIS SALON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT GO TO…read moreTHIS SALON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT GO TO THIS SALON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HORRIFIC experience. My coworker and I booked this appointment over a week in advance which was a bad experience to begin w/. To book this I had to call repeatedly, there was no voice mail box or any indication that I was even calling the correct # and I had to email the website to get a reply for an appointment. We arrived for our appointments 5 mins early. My coworkers was at 1, mine at 1:30. At 1:50, the aesthitician came out to say she now didn't have time for my appointment and I'd need to reschedule. My coworker said to absolutely NOT reschedule as she actually stopped the wax midway b/c the aesthetician did not know what she was doing, used multiple types of wax, and didn't know how to finish the waxing. I called to get my money back from the site I booked from, which I was able to do. When I called the salon to let them know I wouldn't be back, the aesthetician gave me EXTREMELY personal details regarding my coworker private areas and told me I had a terrible attitude and she was GLAD I would not be coming back in, then hung up on me. DO NOT GO TO THIS SALON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The wax I got was thorough and the technician did not double dip. However, there is nothing, and I mean nothing, else to recommend this place. Points against it: Difficult to make an appointment. First they were booked up, then they only take Lifebooker a few days a week. Then Doris said an appointment I made was made "too far in advance." Took me three times to get an appointment. Decor. This does not put you at ease, it's in a dingy office building, there is a gross looking pink couch in the check-in area, the front desk was not manned by anyone and they share the space with a variety of other businesses. Space (More On Decor): I spent my entire wax staring at an awful water stain (an entire panel of the drop ceiling). This is not comforting. The room was dingy, tiny, and my leg actually hit the wall when I had to bend it for the wax. Painful: I would say this was one of the more painful waxes I've received. The technician (not Doris) never chit chatted. She also never introduced herself. She wore gloves that felt latexy and vaguely sticky, so if she touched a part of skin she'd already been over, it was more painful than necessary. One plus side on the lady who did my waxing: I will say, she did do a great job of asking me about the pain level, asking if I wanted to take a break, being reassuring. But overall, I'd rather it be less painful, your bedside manner won't make up for that. I have had less painful waxes, for sure.

Essence! I'm honestly lost for words.. (in all the most amazing ways!)…read more I recently moved to NYC and have been searching for a place to go for my waxing.. I've been to a few salons/studios and nothing felt right. I've been from queens to the UES.. Either their technique, their approach, their "bedside" manner, the products they used.. etc etc just didn't work! I combed through yelp reviews and instagram and came across Essence and was really excited to solidify services with her! I went in for a Brazilian and underarm wax and half way through the waxing I honestly forgot that I was getting waxed! Essence is beyond kind, and makes you feel comfortable immediately (not in that cheesy.. small talk waxer way) but her energy and presence is effortlessly calming, friendly, and I felt like we could talk for hours. If you are looking for someone to wax who is through, gentle, meticulous, and sanitary.. I say book with Essence. She's knowledgeable about products, skin care, has hella skin tips, and you will want to keep talking long after the wax! She's also an educated m black woman who is amazing at her craft!! I…read morewent to Marion to have my locs highlighted and left with an entirely drastic, poorly integrated color that looked like someone just poured bleach on some of my locs. It was really poorly done. To Marion's credit, she fixed it after I returned an hour later but I still did not get the look I hoped for. So, just as a precautionary suggestion: If you have locs and want them highlighted, go to someone who is a colorist of locs. Marion is very good at other hair styles, but I would not go to her to have my locs colored again. I respect Marion's work in general, but do your research.

I met up with my best girlfriend and she asked why I had hair on my forehead... And I laughed and said, my love, those are blackheads! So I knew I had a problem, and I wanted to support a local business that would help me find the resolution for that problem. That is how I came across Chen's Skincare and Spa! I loved that I was able to book an appointment online through their website which was clean and easily navigable. They only took one person per hour in the spa which was comforting giving that we are living in times of plague and pestilence. I was texted to confirm and showed up the next day, a babe in the woods, ready for my first facial/microderm treatment! My technician was Hersy and she was very polite and very understanding! She made me feel welcomed after I revealed that this was new for me as a guy who admittedly didn't know as much about skincare as perhaps I should have known! She explained everything she was doing, what the effects were, and she even made suggestions on how I could better take care of my skin. It has been three days since my Gentleman's facial and microdermabrasion treatment and I have never seen my skin glow quite like it does now! Its wonderful and I've received so many compliments! I have fewer blackheads and my skin just feels incredible! I am so glad I came to Chen's and fully intend to return to maintain a proper adult's skin care regiment!
