Whenever I fly United out of O'Hare, I hope that I'll leave from Terminal 1, Concourse C, because that means I'll be able to visit Beaudevin. And bonus points if my gate is toward the same end but just past it, so I don't even have to go out of my way. I ended up there a couple days before Thanksgiving, having expected crowds at the airport so allowed a extra couple hours, but finding it was unexpectedly uncrowded. Similarly, at lunchtime, I found the wine bar had many seats available, which gave me the chance to choose one for myself, and one to keep my backpack next to me. I usually just get a glass of wine (always the 9oz pour), but hadn't had lunch yet, so I also opted for the Artisan Cheese Plate. I wasn't sure what I'd get, but figured it was worth a try. It was quite good, with a nice variety of both hard and soft cheeses, all very mild! I was very pleasantly surprised! The brie was especially creamy and delicious, and the bread that was served with it was the perfect complement. My server, Javier, was very friendly, welcoming, and attentive. My wine (pinot noir, very smooth and fruity) was poured immediately, and the cheese plate arrived within minutes. I lingered there for about 90 minutes before heading to my gate. Loved Beaudevin and will be back. For a few reasons... 1. The Counter. It's a pretty tiny 'bar'-- with only a dozen seats maybe? I was traveling alone and all I wanted was an adult beverage with maybe a small bite to eat. I walked right up, bam. So much less crowded or loud than so many eateries in the airport. 2. Wine Selection. First, I loved they offer 3oz, 6oz and 9oz pours. Second, their menu was well done. Noting whether wines were floral, fruity, crisp, refined or velvety-- even organic-- with cute little leaves by the name. 3. Service. My server manned the entire counter and was courteous, helpful and prompt. 4. Selection. So, the food menu is small and nothing fancy. But honestly when I travel I just want vino and a light bite. Behind security in Terminal 1 - Concourse C, Beaudevin is an offshoot of the Brussels airport bar that won Best Airport Winebar in the world last year (http://www.brusselsairport.be/en/blog_bru/february_1/9041/ ). They just opened last Friday (2/10/12) and have a sleek green, modern look. They have about a dozen each of whites and reds as well as small plates to go along with them. Beaudevin happened to be by my gate (the fifth gate my flight was switched to thanks to that FAA fire starting scumbag). After another delay in departure, I grabbed a bar stool and decided to have a drink while I waited. I knew exactly what I wanted. They featured a few specialty drinks on their list above the bar and on the menu I was handed. I wanted the South Bound Flight because the description drew me in. It sounded like it would be a vacation for my taste buds. Unfortunately, they discontinued that drink a while back, yet haven't removed it or made note of it anywhere, and couldn't seem to offer any real replacement comparable to it. The best the bartender could suggest was sparkling wine, which I ordered but was much less enthusiastic about. Prosecco. No cucumber. No cilantro. No lime. No agave nectar. No tequila... No bueno. Be still, my heart! A wine bar located in the concourse of O'Hare that I use the most? It is a gift from the heavens, to be sure! Imagine my surprise when I walked down the concourse to the tinkling tunes of a grand piano playing lounge like tunes. I looked up and there are "kitschy" chandeliers made up of wine glasses. And a bar with leather topped stools just looking for a patron to sit down and enjoy a glass of one of their 25 or so wines, a handful of which are in those "Enomatic" wine machines that keep it chilled to just the perfect temperature and gives you just a perfect "pour". The menu consists of salads, chacuterie and cheese plates, caprese skewers, shrimp skewers and several other things which I have already forgotten (must have been the 2 glasses of wine!) And the gal working behind this mirage of a bar? Delightful. She made my wait seem, dare I say, almost enjoyable! So since those leather stools were calling my name, I sat with a chacuterie plate and a lovely glass of vino or two before sprinting to my gate. As airline travel grows less glamorous by the decade, finally there's hope. After arriving in ORD, I had a few hours to kill between flights. With so much time on my hands, I was doing my "airport zombie walk" -- a bored, dazed and mostly aimless lumbering through an airport terminal in the general direction of my next flight. Through my mental fog, I heard ambient piano music playing and reminisced about the heightened shopping experience at nicer department stores. Wait! Piano music...?? In an airport?? I stopped and eyed in disbelief the baby grand player piano. The modern-designed wine bar has the look of a European-styled spot with a granite-topped bar, chandeliers made of wine glasses and Scandinavian-inspired wood fixtures. There was only one stool left, vacated as I walked up. I was about to realize I wasn't the only person in need. This wine bar offers more than 20 wines by the glass, bottle or flights to be paired with small plates like olives or figs, or various tartines like the roasted herb chicken, turkey berry with goat cheese or a Scottish smoked salmon. The Nickel & Nickel Suscol Ranch Merlot 2009 was a comforting find at a reasonable per-glass price, as were the assorted cheese and cold cuts even though they were plated ahead of time. The bar staff were attentive but not meddling. Being an open bar in a busy airport terminal, I curiously surveyed the other guests. I observed a few stopped in for a beer or glass of wine before heading back on their way, while others (such as myself) stayed to engage others in conversation. Ages ranged from a 20 year-old radio technician visiting his family on leave from the Army to a late 50's-ish gentleman who talked extensively about the 2008 vintage of the Nickel & Nickel Merlot, and everything in between. This is a nice, new alternative for having a glass of wine while waiting for connections. Completely open air bar with 10 seats and a self-playing piano. The server was an older woman who was so sweet and just a riot - loved her effieciency, humor and smile. They serve 25 or so wines by the glass and bottle, including bubbles, rose, dessert and flights. You can order a 3 ounce taster, a glass or a bottle. All major airports should have a live piano bar or like in the key terminals. What a breath of fresh air... I totally forgot I was in an airport for the hour + I sat there, ... Derrick Bounds, the pianist, was wonderful, and the wait staff were extremely attentive... I'm a big fan of the 3 oz, glass, or bottle options. But the menu could use a bit more variety, and just plain more food, they were out of several items on the menu. I did like the european-style "snack" plates. I want some of these in ATL, IAH,DAL, PHX, DEN, LAX, SNA, LGB, ONT, CLT, MIA, ORL, FLL, LGA, JFK, CVG, ETC... Love the HOOKS & POWER STRIP under the counter! I love the location in San Diego, but they have fresh food. The wine here is as good as it is at other locations, but avoid the food at all costs. My husband's chicken sandwich came in a bag, and it looked and tasted like it came out of a vending machine. All I can attest to is the Mediterranean shrimp salad. It was fresh and very good for airport food. I would definitely have it again. Delays delays delays. O'hare, you just never disappoint me with the endless delays. Located in terminal C, this piano (well on auto play) is a nice oasis while you wait for your flight. They have probably a dozen seats but turnover is quite fast. Just order and if you're lucky you'll get a seat. If not, you can also just stand there and hang out. It's still ten times better than waiting at the gate staring at he boarding time that keeps on changing. One of the bartender guys was a bit much but whatever I am not there to speak to him. He was calling out customers to come and drink - not exactly the kind of piano bar experience but again better than the gate . It's too small with only about 12 bar stools and no tables but otherwise this is one of the best airport wine bars in the country. It's much smaller but has some commonality with the Beaudevin at Charlotte airport but if you're in the United C terminal at O'Hare this is worth a stop. Food is okay, but they don't have a kitchen on site so don't expect anything but sandwiches, cheese, and charcuterie which are all fine but nothing spectacular. They have beer as well as some cocktails which are generally well done but the wine choices are better than any airport establishment I've run across. Cristom Viognier, Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc, and a bunch of glass pours you never find at airports. Are they cheap? Of course not, you're at an airport - and even outside an airport this wine is not cheap. But the wine is awesome, and the folks at Beaudevin including Lou and Cesar will take care of you well. Just try not to constantly complain about the high prices or your delayed flight, that gets old in a hurry. It's an airport bar, take it for what it is and know that everything is overpriced because they have to pay The Machine to operate here. But if you're going to pay an arm and a leg to drink at O'Hare anyhow you might as well go to Beaudevin, especially if you're into wine this is the only place to be. read more
