Is it a bakery? Is it a restaurant? Is it a coffee bar? Yes. Beatrix is all of them at once, and somehow none of them feel like an afterthought. We went last Saturday morning and it was standing room only with a line to the coffee bar, then we loved it enough to come back for breakfast the next day. That should tell you most of what you need to know. The lemon burst cookie is the reason to walk in the door and a reason to come back. Delectable, plenty of lemon, plenty of tart, and it goes down dangerously fast. We ordered it twice across two visits and would have gone for a third. The lavender honey latte was very good, just the right amount of lavender, not too sweet. The regular coffee was solid, and they let me do a half-and-half decaf without blinking. Sunday breakfast was straightforward, bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, a Virgin Bloody Mary, and all of it was well executed. The menu is ample enough that you could come back several times and not repeat yourself. The decor is modern chic, the seating has a relaxed couch-and-lounge feel, and the music including Rolling Stones, Duran Duran, Van Halen, etc, was the kind of 80s pop-rock playlist that makes a Saturday morning feel like it has a soundtrack. Not too loud, just right. The restrooms were really nice and accessible. The crowd was a genuine mix, families with kids, older couples, and young "elite", the kind of clientele that parks Maseratis and Ferraris out front but doesn't need the prices to match, because they don't. The menu is moderate for Oak Brook, which is a pleasant surprise. Wait staff were excellent, friendly, accommodating, attentive. This works for a casual coffee run, a family breakfast, or a special occasion with reservations. If Beatrix were a TV character, it would be Lorelai Gilmore, fast, charming, effortlessly good at three things at once, we get it Lorelai, you're over caffeinated. 4.4 Stars The honest gripe: we felt a little rushed. Breakfast came and went in forty minutes, the waitress was ready to move us on in 30 minutes, but we pumped the brakes and asked for our second lemon burst cookie of the weekend, and it would've been nice to get the signal that we could linger. My sense is they're popular enough that turning tables is the priority, and I get it, Lorelai has a business to run, but it's the one thing that kept a great morning from being a perfect one. He gave us a moment to decide on drinks, brought everything promptly, and didn't judge me too hard for not reading the sign carefully enough and trying to order the limited edition donut that is only available on weekends, haha. I started with the Hazelnut Oat Mocha--so flavorful, smooth, and not too sweet--and chose the Shakshouka as my main entree. "Spicy" tomato sauce, poached eggs, KALE (I didn't read that the first time and am just realizing it now lol), feta, and these cloud pitas that I should have asked if I could buy more of. The tomato sauce wasn't spicy enough for me, which is funny because their spicy rigatoni all vodka kicked my butt on my first visit to Beatrix. The eggs were cooked to perfection and oozed into the sauce so well! I'm still flabbergasted I started my day with kale, haha. I've been wanting to try Beatrix for a long time, and I finally got the chance to go with a friend during Chicago Restaurant Week--and it did not disappoint! The $45 special included a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), appetizer, entrée, and dessert, and everything was delicious. The highlights for me were the caramel pie and chocolate cake--both were super rich and decadent. I literally had to eat them in "dosages" , but they were so worth it. Our server was very knowledgeable and helpful with the menu, which made the experience even better. The interior is beautiful--sleek, modern, and inviting. We went on a Thursday night, and parking at Oakbrook Mall was pretty hectic. Thankfully, we found a less crowded spot near The Container Store, which saved us some time and stress. I was really impressed by Beatrix. I was worried it was going to be small portions for a high price. But, every dish that my family and I got was very good! I tried a little bit of each dish and can confirm it was all amazing. We tried the spicy rigatoni alla vodka, parmesan crusted whitefish, faroe islands salmon, and french onion short rib. The fish was cooked perfectly and was not dry. The spicy rigatoni was actually spicy and had great flavor. And to end the night, we got their caramel pie. It was my father's birthday and they kindly placed a candle on the pie and gave it to us for free. The caramel pie was probably my favorite thing we got. I have never had anything like it. It was not too sweet and very smooth. The pie reminded me of a pumpkin pie but thicker and creamier (and of course caramel flavored). Happy Hour Review! A friend and I visited Beatrix to enjoy their happy hour specials. Their larger menu offers a variety of small bites, salads, sandwiches, and entrees. What I love is their curated section of vegetarian and vegan options and knowing that they pride themselves on fresh ingredients. Their happy hour menu offers a variety of discounted drinks, $9 starters, and $12 burgers. When visiting, I got the Old Fashioned cocktail for $8. It was perfectly balanced, served with a clear cube, and garnished with the orange skin. For my food, I debated on a couple things but went with the Chicken Meatballs starter which actually came with (5) meatballs and two slices of garlic bread! Cafe meets brunch spot. This spot is happening as we went in on a Monday (week after the Christmas holiday) and the there was still a wait for a table for 2. However, there's a lot of seating in the waiting area that doubles up as a lounge for those coming in just for the cafe. They're known for their coffee, so I opted to get their specialty strawberry milk with a shot of espresso (matcha is another option for those who are coffee-free) or a strawberry latte technically speaking. The salads were delish. I had the Enlightened Caesar with chicken and my MIL had the Ginger chicken & kale salad. Service was good as expected. They seemed exceptionally busy but were well staffed. Our first visit to Beatrix was a total win. We loved the vibe right away very modern and inviting, with a great mix of table seating and cozy couch-style spots that make the space feel relaxed yet upscale. I had honestly never heard of Beatrix prior to this week, and I'm so glad I made it in for brunch! The decor is absolutely stunning, and I was surprised at how busy it was for a Tuesday morning! Food was delicious, but a bit of disorganization drops Beatrix down to a 4. We arrived for our 2:45p brunch reservation early at 2:20p and were told that we'd be seated as soon as a table opens up. We ended up waiting a half hour despite there being numerous empty tables at that point. We were then told by the host that they were shifting to the dinner menu and that the kitchen was turning over so we wouldn't receive any food for another half hour which was surprising considering we had the reservation for 2:45p and arrived early. Ultimately we didn't receive food until 3:40p. It would've been a much better experience if they didn't take reservations for times when they don't plan to serve food, or at the very least it would've been considerate to have been told that we'd have to wait for a dinner menu as soon as we arrived. All that being said, our server was very nice and all the food was very delicious and fresh (I guess the perks of having a 3:30p dinner!). For apps, the chicken meatballs were super cozy yummy, served with a buttery garlic bread. The buffalo cauliflower was one of the best I've ever had, lightly fried with a tangy buffalo sauce with a hint of sweetness that really added something special. For mains, the Korean crispy tenders were actually cutlets. However they were very light and crispy with a tasty, not overdressed slaw and a delicious gochujang honey mustard. The green chile enchiladas had a super yummy kick. The vegan panang curry has great flavor and again a perfect spice level. And then the spicy rigatoni was the ultimate comfort food, exactly what you hope it will taste like! We all opted to order from restaurant week. I got the GF coffee cake. It was so good that I had to second guess if it was actually GF. I had the egg white omelette with GF toast and a red mimosa. Friday night @ 6 pm. Reservation for four. Seated promptly at a table that was literally crammed between three other tables. Our chairs were pressed against the chairs of the other tables. We could hear every single word of all of the other conversations, and had to shout to be heard by our own party members. Two other groups before us requested to be seated elsewhere when they tried to sit them at this table. We should have done the same. Service was good...not exceptional, but good. Empty Diet Coke was not filled until we asked. Water was served in a carafe, and was emptied and not filled until we asked. Dirty plates were not promptly cleared. Food was excellent. Two of us had the Pot Roast Stroganoff, which was amazing. Two of us had the burger. Both burgers were cooked to perfection. Two of us split a Caesar salad, which came out of the kitchen already split into two bowls. Kudos to the kitchen and server for doing this. The salad, however, took a very long time to come out...so much so that our entrees followed soon after...before we had finished the salads. Great salad though. We finished up with a Lemon Burst cookie. We actually ordered two, but there was only one left. We have dined at Beatrix on several other occasions, and they have been out of this particular cookie all but once. Maybe it's time to reevaluate how many to make? We stopped at the bakery area to grab some cookies to go. They were out of numerous items. Again, it was early-ish on a weekend night....someone needs to think about the quantities needed so as not to run out. That being said, everything they did have looked amazing. We haven't eaten the cookies we took home yet, but we're confident they'll be great, because we've never had a cookie we didn't love from Beatrix. (This is a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant, and you can pretty much count on excellent food.) As many restaurants now do, a surcharge was added to the bill. I always find this offensive, but that's just me. Prices are on the high side everywhere these days. Expected tips are higher. Don't hit me with a charge to "offset your costs of doing business". Just an overall rant on surcharges...clearly not specific to Beatrix. Two soft drinks, one salad, four entrees, one cookie...$150. That's an average of $37.50 per person (with no alcohol and no appetizers). It's 2025, and it is what it is...this information is simply provided to inform diners as to what they can expect. The honey gave it a nice depth and the texture was amazing. It reminded me of mascarpone with how creamy it was. The chips made out of seeds gave the dish a nice texture and crunch. The chicken ginger kale salad was light and refreshing. Every piece of the salad was the perfect bite size and easy to pick up, which I appreciated. I loved the hints of coconut when you took a bite. Came to Beatrix Restaurant, Coffee Bar, and Market for a birthday brunch (Not sure about the coffee bar part nor the market actually though they do have what looks like a real alcohol bar.) Visually, it is an inviting vibe, but with rather loud ambient noise amplified by lots of hard surfaces, and overlaid with an eclectic mix of interdecadal beats you can just make out floating on top of the din (Thompson Twins "Doctor, Doctor " happens to be the ditty of the moment). Aside from the décor, the place may remind you of any large institutional cafeteria you've experienced. The best thing about this place for me is the mid-century modern-influenced décor and the use of warm lighting and palette to soften the mostly hard surfaces--and my sandwich bun and bacon. Our servers were all very nice but inexperienced, tentative, and still learning the biz but trying very hard. Ok, the food: Nouvel-blah. Smaller, non-abbondanza portions for the money. Trying very hard, a little pretentious, but you gotta justify the prices--and image is what matters here (on that note, servers wearing blue jeans and dirty gym shoes severely takes some luster off the upscale image). My $14 breakfast sandwich (see pic for its apathetic delivery) did not include any side. THE saving grace was...the bun...OK, and the bacon. The bun a luscious, buttery complement to the tangy, crispy bacon and scrambled eggs. Props where props are due but you think for $14 you'd get a few potatoes thrown in. Surprisingly though, the coffee service, though it appears in the name, was quite unremarkable. Servers brought out coffee-filled cups, not what you typically find in a coffee house but more like someone's china set, sloshing as they tried to balance the tray with six cups on it, then placing the coffee in front of us, as opposed to, placing the cups on the table and then pouring the coffee. Interesting. Overall, I added a star for the very, very nice servers, the bun, and the bacon. I would come back if someone else was paying. In summary, If you are looking for a chill, satisfying vibe, this is not it, but if you're looking for a sensorially stimulating experience, this may just be your cup of single‑origin micro‑lot coffee--if you can find the coffee bar.
