Pimento cheese, side of rib, side ceasar salad
    Stephanie A.

Drove here from downtown on a whim and it was great! We were intrigued by what appeared to be a strong southern influence on the menu, things like a side of collards, pimento cheese, and both creamy and tangy coleslaws. Then our server explained that the owner is a former marine who was stationed in the Carolinas before returning home and suddenly the Brunswick stew variant on the menu made more sense I needed that pimento cheese so for lunch that's what I ordered, along with a side of rib and a side ceasar salad and boy do I feel super smart with my decision making! The pimento cheese is fantastic, and because it was my lunch... I didn't have to share. I said it. The salad was the right size and properly dressed, and the side of rib was meaty with a perfect rub and of course tender and tasty. They have a nice lineup of local beers, interesting cocktails, and happy hour starts at lunch so pretty much you might as well start early.

What a place! The food here is amazing and the vibe is nice. We went with a bunch of the 'snacks' and they did not disappoint. The pork candy and the brisket wontons are worth the trip. Lucas was our server and he was awesome. Very nice, knowledgeable, and friendly. We got our food quickly and it was hot. The Sassy Beast sauce is where it's at. The bartender makes a nice old fashioned.

I'm still on the hunt to finding a good bbq place in MN and was hoping this place would be it but unfortunately not for me. Pros- Service was friendly. Atmosphere was nice (although more hipster like than your typical bbq joint with live music or cozy). Good variety of meat. All sides are vegetarian. Small parking lot. Cons- Food was pretty plain and lacked bbq flavor especially for the price. The mac and cheese was sweet- not my fav but I did like the breadcrumbs on top. The collards greens needed more seasoning. The ribs were too dry. Wish there was more bbq sauce to choose from- I really didn't care for any of them but settled with the Beast bbq sauce. The strawberry shortcake was also a disappointment- I would recommend getting the pecan pie instead or go somewhere else for dessert.

Beast Barbecue instagram: @xcyanneats 2 meat platter + 2 sides Brisket, ribs, mash potatoes, and mac and cheese been craving bbq lately, and this wasn't so bad to fill the cravings. the ribs were definitely tasty and seasoned well! as for the brisket, it was more dry which was kind of upsetting, but maybe it was just the day we went. sides were amazing to taste! mac and cheese noods were still a bit hard, but flavors and texture was delicious Service was nice and always friendly. She was able to walk us thru the menu and give suggestions for drinks as well!

Variety with some spice to life is the fairly new Beast. As the former Legends dive bar closed we had to wait for new ownership, a long remodeling and then came Covid. Eventually Beast opened for take out and finally in house dining. The interior has been gutted and the bar expanded, a back wall has opened to the take out area. High rise window tables and yes new bigger windows. There is a large selection of tap and bottle beers and the menu covers varied tastes with pork, beef or chicken. Check out the generous happy hour which runs from noon to 5:00 p.m featuring a dollar off beers and two dollars off snacks. There are some tater tot dishes, baked beans, mac and cheese. Not quite as divey as Legends but still a tinge of dive. We hope to make this a regular hang out..on our night there we see they could use some customers.

My girlfriend and I were craving BBQ so we stopped by Beast Barbecue. We were pleasantly surprised with both the food and service! We were greeted with a smile and the service was excellent. The two of us split the 2-meat platter. The ribs were exceptional and the brisket was good - but I've had better. We both agreed that double ribs would have been the move. The sides (Mac and fries) were to die for. Overall, a great experience and we will be back!

Barbecue joints in Minneapolis have been popping up like hotcakes for the last four years. I finally got around to trying beast barbecue and although good I wasn't exactly blown away. The menu was easy to read and the prices were fair especially for the portions. I ordered the two meat platter and got the smoked chicken, shredded pork butt, Mac and cheese and collard greens. The pork butt was perfection in that it was tasty, not dry and the portion was nothing to complain about. The smoked chicken had a little more to be desired. Again the portion was amazing but I found that the skin would not break apart and was almost difficult to chew. The mac & cheese was a bit on the dry side and could use a little cream cheese to help make it creamier. The collard greens were done really well and had a good bite to them. Overall I would go back again as the pricing and portions were fantastic I just might change out my order and try other things next time.

Two meat platter with two sides for $32 was good and just what I wanted. Beers on draft was nice with our meal. Brisket was a little dry and ribs didn't have much smokiness to them. Corn was zippy and flavorful. Beans were just okay.

Smoked white fish and pork with Brussel sprouts and baked beans.

Ever since 2020, the climate surrounding the George Floyd Square has changed dramatically, and this establishment has become an even stronger integral part of the community as the square itself had represented how the community thrives with its people. A lot of respect for the establishment from that perspective. In terms of food, I would say the soul food, which contained mostly sides, were the main highlight for me. The mac & cheese was salty enough. The fries were solid in a "you can't really go wrong with it" type of way. The candied yams had enough sweetness. The collard greens could taste better but standards must be lower when they're not homemade. I also enjoyed the catfish fillets as they were fried to preserve enough hotness and softness. A lot of what they served, they made on the spot, which was what may be causing longer wait for some. Meat-wise, a lot of items could use further improvement because they were too dry, such as the smoked wings and the beef brisket. The wings were dry to the point that they condensed and got extremely salty. The brisket relied a lot on the sauce and the existing fat on the meat for juiciness while the meat itself didn't have a lot of flavor or juice. As for the ribs, they had some seasoning, and tasted just fine, and weren't as dry. But I have had ribs in Texan barbeque places before and knew what "seasoned" ribs were like and therefore concluded that the ribs here were not spectacular. With all that said, however, I still will return here as often as I can because I love supporting this business. The person serving me was very hospitable and patient. I still got some pretty solid barbeque even if it's not Texas. Besides, outside just the barbeque food, the soul food was solid, like I had mentioned above.

Seeing the size of the portions, we decided to split the Piri Piri Chopped Pork sandwich with Mac n cheese and beans as our sides. It was more than enough food. The sandwich was delicious. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, though. It's counter service so you order, grab your drink, take a seat, and wait for your food. We got the "Chopped Chick'n" platter and a brisket platter. The chicken was extremely tender and well seasoned. By far the best thing on the table. The tangy slaw was really good, too. Not too saucy, good texture, and light. The cornbread was not my favorite. Very northern; overly sweet and pretty dry. The crispy edges were great. The brisket was really disappointing. It was over-rendered and really dry. If fell apart (good) because every bit of the intramuscular fat had cooked out (bad). I think they just don't get enough traffic to cook them fresh so the ones from the morning dry out in the warmer all day. I think this is a better option than Famous Daves for larger groups r corporate events but would probably just go somewhere else or smoke something at home instead.

I love the coleslaw and even compared it to other coveted coleslaw - this is my favorite. I'm picky with bbq sauce, but their bbq sauce hit hard. They have a small parking lot - maybe 3 or 4 spots, but there is plenty of street parking. Also worth mentioning you order up front and get a number. That earns them 4 stars in my book, versus 3. The quality of the meat is good, although wings & ribs were cooked a little drier than I prefer. The tender moistness of both the Brisket & Pulled Pork was excellent. My favorite of all 4 meats was the Brisket, which was tender, flavorful, with a nice charred bark that complimented the beef & fat perfectly. The brisket didn't need sauce, which was great, but for my taste it needed just a touch more salt. The Pulled Pork was tender, juicy, and super-porky, but lacked any other flavor or texture. It had no little delicious crispy bits, nor that rich crave-able tasty goodness. It was just pork. The biggest overall drawback for me was that everything but the Brisket lacked that nice tasty char that USUALLY accompanies the smokiness of really good BBQ. Instead of that bit of char, there was a paper thin honey-like hard film, that added a hint of sweetness to every bite, that reminded me of Asian BBQ. That's not necessarily a bad thing but, when you're craving Southern BBQ, that just doesn't cut it. As for the BBQ sauces, there is just one - a typical semi-sweet Kansas City style sauce. BUT there is also "Mama's Pepper Sauce" for an additional charge...hot & yummy (technical foodie term) that is excellent when mixed with the BBQ sauce. If you want good smokey meats, FireBox has that. Worth 4 stars. Just set your BBQ expectations, and you'll be okay. UPDATE: Take the pulled pork home, and chop it on an ultra-hot cast-iron pan! That really brings out the flavor of the rendered fat, and adds those delicious crispy bits with that missing touch of char, plus preserves that great FireBox smoky goodness!
