Well we just had a great time here... The space isn't in the most appealing area, but not uncommon for craft brewers to start this way. They've done a magnificent job of using what they have, and we found it appealing. Jenna was working the day we visited, and we appreciated both her knowledge of beer and interesting commentary on some local issues. We had a flight of the Whitewater hefe, Sunburst saison, Paint Rock porter, and the Snownado imperial stout. Check the cool cocoa rim on that one! There was an $1 upcharge for the two higher ABVs (porter and stout). All were well done. Half pours are available too, making it easy to enjoy more styles without going overboard. The Stiff Paddle IPA was quite good, and we ended up taking away a 32 0z growler to enjoy later. There was no charge for the growler bottle, something unheard of in the Atlanta area. One patron brought his dog, and having recently lost our own dog we were delighted to have the company of his pooch, who knew just where the cookie jar on the bar was. We were just visiting from out of town, but so many locals had spoken and engaged us in conversation that by the time we left we felt like we were saying goodbye to a group of friends. I can't think of anything more I'd want from a crafter brewer. Even the music was groovy and we didn't have to scream to have conversations. I really like this place. The Brewery is in an old warehous-y like area -- as most good breweries are. This isn't to be a fancy place...but a great place for them to make the beer and the opportunity to buy a pint, play some darts and catch up with friends. They have a great selection of eight or more pouring...I love the Porter and tried a solid IPA here. I also liked that they are connected with other local breweries and participate in rare collaborations. Finally, it is tricky to find but really convenient off the highway. I mean driving from Cullowhee to Asheville you can stop off, get a growler, or a quick pint and be on your way. read more

I write this review, however, to recommend that BearWaters gets rid of the aquariums and set the turtles and fish FREE (this will open up more seating space which is a plus for business). As I was driving down Frazier Street, I was thinking how a brewery could be anywhere around here. Then pulling in between warehouses, I was making sure I had my weapon on me.There were 3 guys talking in front of building that I later realized were owners. Didn't receive any type of greeting or acknowledgement I was there. As we entered the building I was quite surprised how cool looking it was inside. Kind of like you turned an empty warehouse into a man-cave. A long bar, tables and booths along a large mural of a rocky river underneath a hanging kayak. There are two real dart boards and a small stage. According to the chalkboard there's a food truck that comes n on Thursdays. As we sat another couple also sat but the girl behind bar kind of said something nu kept washing glasses and empty growlers (with her back to us.) we sat at the bar and waited for her to finish. As she came over, she did not explain anything to us just kind of expected us to know about the beers ī guess. I asked about flights and she says yea. Ok then, how much for how many? They had 7 of their own and a few guest beers but since were at their brewery, I kept to theirs. 4, four oz. Costs $7 if they are $4.50 or a dollar more each for higher priced. So I ordered all 7 of theirs plus a Original Sin Apple Cider(naw) BearWaters offer a variety of tastes from The Delta Blonde golden ale, (its ok, somewhat bland) PaddleFree, an English style ESB to darker beers like Schwarz, a German black lager and Anglers Amber a dark ale with a smoke taste(not bad). Even the Scotch Ale and Irish Stout were pretty mild and light. Not too bad of a drive from Asheville. We were on rain delay from the Canton pool and decided to try this place. We love visiting different breweries on vacations and this one was one of my favs! Great beer. The blueberry was my favorite. Great open air atmosphere. Right on the river. Games for the kids. I also loved that they named some of the beers after local hiking spots. Gave it a personal touch. I'll make this spot a def go to when I visit Asheville throughout the year. read more

The door man is a black lab that likes to sniff your crotch. The guy behind the bar (Greg) is a fountain of information. You can order pints, flights, growlers, or a half growler. I tried all 8 beers (in two flights) and was not disappointed with any of them. My bill was $8, what a deal! Let's see..., Stiff Paddle IPA is a winner, service was great, friendly atmosphere and pet friendly so bring your dogs right in. What's not to like? Surely a 4+ and or 5- and almost a perfect place to hang. No food or snacks so bring your own. The wife and I went on an outing on the 4th of July and ran across this new brewery which had just opened 2 weeks ago. They were still doing some construction out front, but inside the atmosphere was relaxed yet peaceful. The old warehouse has a comfortable feel and the guys at the bar ( Josh and staff ) were very helpful in our decisions with beer choices available. The beer selections were excellent with a good variety, and the food from the interior restaurant Pigeon River Grille was fantastic! The shrimp Po-Boy was messy but delicious! (ask for extra napkins!) The Turtle Shells(brussel sprouts),Bar Pretzel, and Loaded Potato were all different, but very tasty appetizers! All Service personnel were great and attentive. We have just had the chance to experience their new location in Canton! The beer has always been the best in WNC but this new location is better than we ever could have imagined. Something for everyone! You have to visit just to see what has been done to this historical building with the river camp feel that they have created! Beer is great. Food and service terrible. We arrived about 1230 on Sunday. Outside was busy. Inside not so much. We decided to eat inside. We ordered 2 beers and my 19 year old son order a water. The waitress told us since she was busy we could get our own water at one of the several stations they had set up. Did not think that was appropriate since we were dining inside and paying for service. We all 3 had burgers and fries. Burgers were dry and we each got a small handful of fries. This is not my first time eating there because I am a local. And not the first substandard experience but I thought I would give them another chance. Not again. read more

I was there on Oct 24, 2021 with my family. The whole experience started badly when a waitress jumped on us for moving a table away from the wall so that we could fit 6 people at the table. They only had 4 choices for the entree and they were out of 2 of them. An hour and 15 minutes later (we still had not gotten our food) the waitress came back and said that the stove was broke or needed to be cleaned. Her explanation was so disjointed it sounded like she was making it up on the spot. She then said she could get us a round of drinks on the house, but ran off so fast we could not add 2 glasses of water to the list. The female blonde bartender came over with the drinks and as she started to run off, I asked her for 2 glasses of water. She said the water was self-serve. I explained how we had been waiting over an hour and asked if she could bring us the 2 glassed of water. Her reply..."I am not going to do that!" I said.."Really?". She then said "If you don't like it you can leave!" So we did. Terrible service and that waitress should have been fired, but the shift manager did nothing but try to make excuses. Not only will I never go there again, but I am telling everyone I know about this terrible experience. They are getting 1 star only because I cannot post the review with zero. read more

It's always fun when you see one of your favorites on the chalkboard, but if it's not there, your sure to enjoy on of the other options. Be it Nitro fueled Chocolate Cherry Stout, or a beer flavored with Florida Datel Peppers, something is sure to please. I have always been greeted with a smile and friendly service. The bar staff are always willing to let you taste a beer before ordering. The pride they feel for their beer is obvious. They also have the best sound system around, and a good variety of music to take advantage of the equipment. The small room makes for a great listening experience. Extremely disappointed about this place. We are staying in a cabin in Canton and since we love beer we came to try it and order food as well. Beer was ok we can give them a 3 star rating. But food was the greatest disappointment! We ordered a few things: for starters we had wings which were cold and uncooked we had to give them backs cheese curds were good but it's not something you can messed up. For my kid we ordered the mojo pork bowl it was like a soup in a bowl, the taste wasn't as bad. I ordered salad and added mojo pork it was thrown in a metal platter with a bunch of vegetables and mojo pork on top not a good presentation; my husband ordered the pimento cheese burger, it was cold and the burger extremely overcooked and dry. Wings came back and were ok this time cooked and warm. We expend almost $85 in not good food, they are pricey. We've been many times around Asheville and other places and we haven't had this experience. Location is pretty looking down the river but if you are coming for food go someplace else in all honesty. The place has potential but they need to out more effort on their menu. read more

Had a beer on opening day in new Canton location. As is to be expected, there were little glitches in service and beer availability but staff very friendly and apologetic. Had Ribeye Steak and Gravy over fries from the Pigeon River Grille (inside the brewery) and it was amazing. For $10 there was plenty for two people and was hot and served very quickly. The beer was good, nothing too adventurous, just a good solid standards. Their space is great, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating right on the river. We loved it! read more

First of all, if you have not had a chance to visit their new location - stop reading this and go check it out. It's amazing what this crew did with an abandoned building in downtown Canton and I look forward to the many things that they are working towards here. However, they have some pretty severe kinks to work out. Let's begin with their opening night (6/16). My wife and I decided to check this out a bit later into the evening to avoid the rather large crowd that had gathered. I believe we arrived somewhere around 8:30 - 9:00 pm and had a couple of beers. I can't say anything negative about the experience from this evening, although I took note that they were pouring beer from pitchers from near the brewing area and not directly from the taps. Either way, this wasn't a big deal, the beer was cold and it tasted delicious (we had the Sliding Rock Amber Ale and the Bugle Boy Brown Ale). The restaurant that is leasing out space in the building (Pigeon River Grill) had run out of food by this point and had to close - an excellent sign that they were putting out some good food. Since then, we've returned a few times and have noticed the following: 1. Depending on the beer that you order, you may or may not get something fresh out of the tap. It appears that there are continuing issues with the tap system (at least this is what we were told by an employee) and I can say for a fact that it affects the beer. The pours we have seen have either had an abundance of foam or are being poured from pre-filled pitchers. I am a big fan of their Brown Ale, and the last time I had it it was not very cold and almost tasted flat - I contribute this directly to the issues with the tap system). 2. The food is exceptional. I'm not sure if Yelp will setup a separate page for the restaurant, but that place is a 5/5. I never thought I would see the day where you could order a hickory nut gap burger in Canton, but now you can. So far, we have had the burger, the chicken sliders, the shrimp 'po boy, Brussels Sprouts and the pork rinds - all were delicious, but I would highly recommend the Brussels Sprouts. 3. Seating leaves something to be desired. There's been a couple of times where we wanted to come down, have a beer and eat something - but all of the tables were filled. With such a large area, it would be nice to see them fit some additional community tables into the space or add a covered patio area to handle extra seating when it rains. In the times we have been there it's never been "shoulder to shoulder", but it feels like better utilization of the space could help. I plan to update this review once their tap system is fixed - right now the only reason that I can give three stars is for the atmosphere and the awesome food; it just feels like their taps are killing the beer. read more

I have been a regular since Bearwater opened. Great spot on the river close to home, great beer and its not Asheville which are a plus. Went an opening night after COVID closure same great beer, awesome location but Pigeon River Grill is gone and now the food is by Taqueria. I was really disappointed in the menu and the prices. Looks like BearWaters is trying to bring Asheville to Canton. $7.00 bucks for a Taco with a tablespoon of meat just won't cut it for me, takes three or four of these boys to get feed. The pretzel is Huge but no way it's worth the 15.00 asking price. I get it that BearWaters is a brewery and want to pass off the food to a third party but come on guys those prices and serving sizes are a joke. Would be much better off just serving beer and have a food runner bringing in food from Jros, southern porch, Kobe, and DiMaggo if you really don't like the idea of running the Kitchen. No more loaded tots, pork skins and a bar without wings is bad news. I hope they didn't sign a long term contract with Taqueria. I am so disappointed I have really loved going having some beer and eating a good variety of food in the past. Sure will miss the Elvis Pressley cake. I will still stop by and have a beer probably not near as often and likely on my way to Waynesville for more beer and some food food. Sorry guys the food just doesn't fit. read more

For a small town brewery this place wow'd us! We stopped by after racing Lake Logan triathlon and the atmosphere was very hip, local and the beer was fantastic. They have a 3rd party in house food option which was equally amazing. Not only many gluten free options, but as someone who is GF they have TATOR TOT WAFFLES WITH GF BUTTERMILK CHICKEN. I haven't been able to have chicken and waffles in YEARS! And it tasted amazing. I cannot explain what a dream this was! To have a hard time deciding which GF dish to order doesn't happen very often! We've been vacationing in Waynesville for the last 12 years and we had no idea BearWaters was so close and so good. Very kid and dog friendly. I loved the outside seating with corn hole and tether ball. The have several tables outside. The food was amazing! It took a little while for the food but it was well worth the weight. This place is a step in the right direction for Canton. The atmosphere is really cool. We sat outside right on the river. There were all kinds of games we could have played and people had their dogs with them. I had the sliding rock ale and the heavy cream stout. Both were very good! My sister had the blueberry beer and she enjoyed it. My favorite part of the whole place was the sparkling water station! As a La Croix addict, I was thrilled to see this and for only $1! Had to dock this place one star because of the Pigeon River Grill, though. We were told that they were too backed up and couldn't take any more food orders for 15 minutes. Once we ordered, it took a good 20-25 minutes for our food to come out. The food itself was okay. My dad bought a soda and it cost him like $2.14 for a miniature bottle of Dr. Pepper. This could be a 5 star place if they get the food service part down pat. We'll be back anyway though! read more
