I love this bookstore. I can't believe we've lived in this area for so long and hadn't gone in. The woman working was LOVELY! She was very very knowledgable and navigated the store like a champ. The amount of rare and antique books is really fun to look through! My husband bought a few rare copies of Steven King's IT and The Stand. They also buy back books - but you have to make an appointment on Thursdays. I can't wait to go back. read more

What an absolutely wonderful little place... I moved to Maynard about a year ago, and found Bearly Read during an exploratory drive one Sunday afternoon. Being a fan of old books and old maps, I decided to stop in and check out their selection - ended up buying a book on old baseball parks and eventually found an old atlas as well. They have first editions of several books available (out of my price range, but if that's your thing you'll be thrilled) and their science fiction section is vast (again, not my thing, but it's worth the drive if it's yours). The owners are extraordinarily gracious with their time and very helpful - just tell them what you're looking for. Easier than going into Boston for some food for the mind, and the people are nicer to boot - get over there and enjoy! read more

Hi there. Boyfriend and I have both agreed that we spend too much $$ on books and it is about time we put a stop to the madness!! We drive by this store all the time and made it a point to stop this last weekend. We both agreed that this no frills, get down to business, used bookstore was right up our alley. We'll be visiting regularly. Some books were a little overpriced (in my bookm no pun intended) but I think it depends on the condition because I found another copy of a book I wanted that was $10 cheaper, so I naturally got the cheaper one. PS. I think anyone required to get summer reading books or bookclub books should check here first. Definitely cramming a lot of books in there. read more

Delightful little used bookstore. Shelves and shelves of gently used newer books and some quite nice antiquities. The owner is very nice and happy to help you find what you're looking for. If you're planning to trade books in, do call first to make sure somebody is available to look at them. I would agree with other reviewers that it's a little pricey, but if you're looking for something out of print or rare it's certainly worth it. read more

A wonderful little store. It's only small on the outside! I've been buying and selling here for years; they have a book for everybody (or two, or three, or four). From out of print paperbacks and common vacation thrillers to rare antique and first editions, and of course coffee table books, journals, and collections, there's a good chance they have what you're looking for. The place is wall to wall shelves, floor to ceiling, and very well organized for such a crowded little place. I have eclectic tastes and have often spent hours poring over their offerings. I rarely leave with less than five books. The owner is a lovely woman who is always good for a long conversation, and very helpful when it comes to locating hard to find items. Call ahead to schedule a meeting if you want to sell your books; this is a one-woman operation and such things need to be planned in advance. read more

For years I've driven past the unassuming red building on rt. 20. Little did I know that inside held the largest collection of first edition/rare books locally. Where else around here can you thumb through a first edition Vonnegut or Capote? What about a $1000 first edition of Kerouac? I'm one to scour old book stores for hours. If there's a book, this store has it, and possibly has it in an older edition. Hardcover's are hit or miss on price range, sometimes absurdly high and sometimes a striking deal. Paperbacks are 1/2 the cover price or a $1.50 minimum. Parking is behind the building. The staff are a married couple who love their work. Barely Read Books is a destination worth driving to. read more

Decent place, great atmosphere - really "feels" like a used bookstore, piled high with books all over. Fairly well-organized, including sections just for rare books. I agree with the previous reviewer that prices are really hit-or-miss - some of their price tags just blew me away as nearly criminal (or, perhaps, overly optimistic) for books that weren't really anything special (old does not automatically equal important). At the same time, though, a couple others were such good deals I had to buy the book on the spot, despite swearing I was "just looking." read more

I like this store. I've been in there a few times now and it's a neat little place. It's the type of place you visit if you're looking to browse our go on a treasure hunt. I'm that kind of person, so place like this appeal to me. That said, the place does have some issues that I feel need to be addressed; 1. Parking. I know there is parking in the rear, but it's kind of a narrow path. The parking out front is a nightmare and I REALLY do not recommend it during peak hours. This place is literally right in the west side of ROUTE 20. Pulling out of there in reverse I'd about as safe as dancing with the devil. 2. It's somewhat disorganized. The science fiction and fantasy section looks like it hasn't been organized in a long time and alphabetical order has been thrown out the window. This makes it next to impossible to find a specific title unless the book is part of a series. 3. Rare books... okay this may be a bit of a nitpick, but as a collector of rate antiquities, it bears saying. Do your research before making a purchase from the rate book cabinet. I recently saw one of the Oz series books that was priced and labeled as a 1st edition, but after doing a quick check online, I'm almost positive is one of the 1950s forgeries. Really easy mistake to make, but something that should be addressed. Other than that, it's a nice place. If your looking for treasure out just want to browse on the off chance that you'll find something interesting, this is the place for you. If you're looking for something specific, you may want to call first. The staff are very nice and always eager to help. So yeah, I'd definitely recommend stopping in and checking out their selection. read more

Used-bookstores like this are vanishing due to the internet. A tragic loss for those of us who love spending hours carefully browsing through every decent genre of books you can imagine. It is an old-time, used-book store. Period. Do not expect perfect order, although it is far more orderly than most similar stores I have been to. This is a place to visit, relax, plan to spend your time, and leave with a bag full of books you are either thrilled to find still or gems that you had no idea were ever available, all at a fraction of what new books would cost. I've left with 10 books that cost me what one new one would have cost. Whenever this place closes, it will be a sad day for bibliophiles. read more

This is one of the best used book stores I've been in. Whether you're a collector or someone just looking for a new book to read, you'll find something worth bringing home. The knowledgable staff is delightful to be around, and will gladly help you find whatever you're looking for. Their collection is eclectic and high quality, and priced fairly. The store itself is a warm environment, not cluttered like other book stores. As a budding collector I know I'll be a repeat customer for as long as I'm in the area. read more

Totally agree that this place is a gem, and more people should know about it. But the prices are always good. Maybe some things are high, but for goodness sake, some of these books are hundreds of years old. I thought one book was "absurdly high" and asked about out. The owner told me all about it and where she got the price. I goggled it myself when I got home, and the price was really lower than anywhere else on the web. Went back to get it and it was gone. Someone got a deal. I try to get there more often now since I see how fast they sell books. Don't want to miss on another gem. read more
