Owning a cabin in Alpine and going to the Bear Wallow Cafe kind of goes hand in hand, especially on those mornings where you really don't feel like cooking breakfast on your own. It's got a very rustic feel on the inside and out and the food is very much what you would expect from a diner/cafe. I really like the no cell phone policy although I always see people on their phones. I was tempted to break out the phone to sneak a few pics of my chicken fried steak but I decided against doing so. I usually get the chicken fried steak for breakfast but I have had their lunch options a few times a little too long ago to recall what they were. The service is usually pretty good and being one of the few restaurants in town, they can get to be pretty busy at times. Bear wallow is definitely a mainstay for Alpine. read more

Stopped in based on a recommendation from one of the staff members at our hotel. He was right, the pie was excellent. We also had two cheeseburger plates which were average. There was a Donald Trump flag flying outside and a Redneck Territory sign inside, but our waitress was very friendly and the vibe was not bad. I am African American and my wife is Filipino; we didn't feel ignored nor awkward being there. The waitress actually invited me to look at the pictures and signs throughout. read more

Best service ever!! We are from out if town and were planning on stopping for a sandwich. We tried the Alpine Grill, and were very unsatisfied with the service. We stepped inside and waited almost 10 minutes before we got any kind of response form them, and that was because my dad stepped up to the counter where 2 ladies were standing and talking. After we tried to order from them and continued to be ignored, we decided to go elsewhere. And we are glad we did! As soon as we walked in we were cheerfully greeted, and sat right away. Both places were equally occupied with other diners. The staff here was very pleasant and took care of our order right away. They checked in with us between our ordering and getting our food. Imagine that in the course of your blacktop quest, you've eaten through the supply of Cheetoes that you picked up in Phoenix four hours previously, and you've managed to conjure a powerful hunger. It's dark, the summer rains have begun to fall in those high Arizona mountains, and you haven't seen a town for many a mile. You begin to contemplate taking out one of those elk you keep passing on the side of the highway, wondering if it'd be possible to carve out a nice flank steak using nothing but your rental car key.... But then fate--that fickle friend--smiles upon you! Like a vending machine glowing seductively in the darkened communal kitchen of a Cisco office building, you see it: up ahead on the left! The Bear Wallow Cafe! You pull over and slam your rental steed into "park," barely clearing the door as you slam it behind you in your haste to intake caloric sustenance. You enter the Bear Wallow and are greeted by a sweet young thang in a t-shirt and jeans, offering you a booth seat by the front windows. She thrusts a worn but clean laminated menu in your hands, and within the first five seconds of scanning the options, you spy your salvation: chicken fried steak. With gravy. Country gravy. Your order is placed, and you take a tour of the salad bar while waiting for the main prize. It's a modest offering of vegetation, but it has all the diner classics. Pickled beets! Croutons! Vats of homemade house dressing! You scuttle back to your table to inhale your rabbit food and scarcely catch your breath before the entree arrives. It's huge and piping hot. The breaded meat is nestled up against an absolute mound of green beans and a hulking mass of shoestring french fries. Everything is coated in thick, creamy gravy goodness. You inhale the comforting aroma and begin to make headway on your dinner. But wait! Before you finish, you must ask yourself--and be honest here--Have You Saved Room For Pie? For the Bear Wallow does not limit its savory offerings to vegetables and cream sauces. Oh no. The Bear Wallow has an ever-changing rotation of housemade pies. The night of my dining adventure featured coconut cream, banana cream, pecan, apple, blueberry, blackberry, peach, and a few others that overloaded my RAM. I had blackberry. My dining partner had banana cream. And diner coffee, which was predictably weak and watery but somehow works exactly right with those surroundings...and that heavenly pie. So, should you find yourself in the above predicament, driving down that lonesome stretch of highway sans your bag of Frito Lay, hang a left at the Bear Wallow. I've always been told that if there are several cars parked out front, then chances are the place is popular. Such was the case with Bear Wallow Cafe. It appeared that the locals were on to something! The cafe was classic for a small town, complete with photographs all over the wall of local fisherman and hunters. The decor was top notch. The food was alright. Not a lot on the plate (it was easy to eat all that they brought out) and the cost was average. My waitress was alright but not real friendly. In fact, the most disappointing part of my visit was the fact that she was quick to serve the "locals" first before helping me - from taking my order to taking my credit card. If you were a local, you came first. Great if you lived there, but I was just visiting ... perhaps only one time. read more

Walked in and sat down, nobody greeted my party, got up to try to get someone from the bar to take our orders but was just looked at and not helped. There is some serious racist energy here too. The food is very good. Cooked fresh.. The amazing thing about the BWC is the owner and the staff.. I felt like I was at a family dinner on Thanksgiving.. So sweet and genuine.. Be ready to make you cellphone calls before you enter.. Because some cellphone users are loud and rude, there is no calling. I agree 100%.. You are there to relax and enjoy your meal not to try and sell your used car or make a blind date!! Onto the BS about the confederate flag. The owner displays the flag to remind us that in war, bothers should never fight and kill each other. Her two sons fought in the armed services and she would like to see war completely abolished. If you think you will be caught in a civil war battle in the cafe then there are a few other cafes in town. I will return to the great cafe anytime I ride the Devils highway. My husband had the burger on sour dough and he really liked it. I don't eat beef so my choices were limited. I ordered the cheese enchiladas and very disappointed. They weren't cooked through so cheese not completed melted nor was the enchilada sauce -it just sat on top of the enchiladas. Beans were good though. Service was good though it was very busy. I thought the price was too high for the quality of meal. If we ever are in the vicinity around breakfast I might try that. Oh- there is no social distancing and masks are not required. read more

Stopped this morning for breakfast. Seen many times when people were waiting on the front porch to be seated, but not today. Walked in and saw 3-4 empty tables covered with dirty dishes. No busboy? Found a table. Was served coffee in a small styrofoam cup....??? After ten minutes we waved down a waitress and ordered a couple breakfasts. Took quite a while to get our food and when it was brought out finally it was dropped on the table with no question if we needed anything else. Never was offered coffee refills, just the initial small cup. Flagged down the waitress again to get water. Never, ever again. The bacon was... fine. The chicken fried steak looked like an oversized chicken nugget with gloop on top. The pancake was... fine. after a night at Hannagan Meadow Lodge during our trip up the Coronado Trail and over to New Mexico, we abandoned the lodge for breakfast (really...don't serve breakfast until 8 a.m.?!) and so glad we did. Stumbled upon Bear Wallow. We were greeted the second we walked in the door, took a seat in the back and were brought coffee and water instantaneously. The place is full of character, and characters, and offers a huge breakfast assortment. I went with the day's special -- a biscuit (they spell it with a q?), great homemade sausage gravy, two eggs and hashbrowns. The hashbrowns could have used a bit more cooking...a bit raw and greasy, but the biscuit and gravy were outstanding. Hubby had a skillet with hasbrowns, diced ham, onions, peppers and cheese with two eggs on top and rye toast. Happiness all around. the owners/servers were friendly, efficient and downright nice. Yes, there are signs about not using your cellphones...if you really must, go outside. It certainly isn't a reason to boycott some of the best food around. we sat at the Bear Wallow comtemplating that we'd like to live in a town like Alpine someday, at least part of the year, and make Bear Wallow Cafe a part of our weekly routine. read more

Ate here while visiting the small town. Actually ate here all 4 days I was in town. Ordered the Bean & Cheese burrito stuffed with lettuce, tomato, onions, sour cream & cheese. Enough for two people about the 6x the size of taco bells and much tastier. In addition tried the pies. Peach pie a little to sweet for my liking, Blueberry pie scrumptious and just right with the flaky crust, Mixed Berry melt in your mouth good... Then ordered the coconut cream pie which btw there cream pies are NOT homemade they are made by Shamrock Foods and the Coconut Cream was disgusting I threw mine away. Yuck. Stick with their fruit pies homemade all the way and $4.99 or $5.49 with 2 scoops of ice cream. Nataani is one of the owners and makes the fruit pies every morning.. My burrito with slice of pie came out to just under $15.00.. Enjoy... Get a stuff Burrito anyway you like it and tell them Kacee sent you. read more

Found this place for breakfast when driving through Alpine going south on Coronado Trail / Rt 191. What a cool place. Customers seemed to be mostly locals and visiting hunters and motorcyclists. Had their breakfast skillet (hash browns, eggs, green chiles, onion, ham, cheese. It was phenomenal. Great coffee. Service was prompt and professional. Great authentic ambiance, decorated with local vintage signs, pictures, etc. Highly recommended. Will visit again. read more

I've eaten dinner at Bear Wallow for years. Good solid American food. Not a huge fan of the chicken fried steak, everything else I've had is great. Had breakfast there for the first time today, my hubby had steak and eggs and I had the grand slam (French toast with bacon and eggs) - both incredible. Bacon was the best I have ever had - I usually avoid ordering it at restaurants because it tends to disappoint but this bacon was thick, crispy, perfect. Will definitely be coming here for breakfast more often! read more

I have been here several times and would definitely recommend the breakfast as the best time to go. The service and food at breakfast have been great but on the weekend or during hunting season, you need to get there early to find a seat. Lunch time have been okay for meals but nothing stands out. I have had dinner but usually on Sunday night when they have their prime rib special. They do a good job on the prime rib and it comes out pretty good and the sides are just the right size to leave room for a slice of homemade pie. However, It is only on Sunday night and not many folks stay that late to experience it. read more

We eat here every time we camp at Big Lake. We love it! The staff are so friendly and welcoming. The food is "down home cooking." You're in for a great "greasy spoon" kind of experience.
