I am a restaurant manager. I usually come in here about every three months to fill up my CO2 tanks. Everyone has been very nice but unfortunately last night when I came in with my husband at around 6:30 PM, the bartender working was very unprofessional. I could tell by the time that I walked in that she wasn't having it. She was probably not having a good day. That's not good for someone that works in hospitality and customer service. I will definitely be back but it's instances like these that really make me debate if I should..... to the owners, you've done a wonderful job in this place, I've been coming here for a few years and I love what you guys have done with the place. I am not sure why I never reviewed Bear Roots. I have been a "loyalist" member since I moved to Vista, in late 2019, They remained opened during COVID: you could go refill your growler on the curb, that was fantastic! Welcoming environment, super clean and overly friendly staff, we always have fun at Bear Roots! They now have a pool table and many board games, special events (loyalist parties, trivia, music...) But most importantly... the beers! I love their light blondes/lager, the Mexican and Italian ones are fantastic! My mom loves their IPA (the "Deep Rooted"). Regulars are very friendly as well. I was at Bear Roots on Santa Fe on Friday afternoon 3/14/2025. I got a 32oz growler fill and was charged $20. I questioned the price noting that was more than the price of the two pints I had while there. The woman insisted that it was the price of a $32 oz growler fill. I love this place! The beer is incredible! Not only are the drinks good but they also have events that go on as well, like comedy shows! Cute brewery. Can probably accommodate approximate 30-50 ppl at once. Beer selection is limited. They have hard seltzer. My husband insisted to come back because in 2017 we came here for a great beer (something like bear cookie stout?) and we got a growler for that reason. We have not come again since then (and then you know, Covid happens..).. we were in Carlsbad today and it's not far to come by. So we stopped at here. My friend and I came in on a Friday night. We had originally thought about going to belching beaver but we decided to try bear roots instead and I'm so glad we did! The place is awesome, it has a lodge-ey feel to it. Mostly everything is wood and they have lots of greenery. If you shake a stick within a mile of the hop highway, you'll likely hit a brewery. Bear Roots Brewing certainly fits that bill. More than just another brewery in Vista, though, Bear Roots was the subject of a very specific craving on a random Saturday night. Some time before our visit here, my partner in crime & I had tried their Bear Cookie (Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout) at a beer festival. Absolutely delicious. It left an impression. & a desire to have more. So it was time to do something about that. Located at the end of strip mall, parking wasn't hard to find. Walking in, it was maybe 1/2 full inside & had a good, jovial vibe. The beertender was friendly & welcoming. Sidling up to the bar, we ordered the requisite Bear Cookie, & a flight of their other beers I hadn't yet tried. The Bear Cookie was fantastic, as before. The flight of mostly IPA's was also really solid. My Untappd ratings for the beers I've had here say I really like their stuff. While sipping & savoring our beers, we surveyed the place from the bar. Along with tables & barrels, there's a way too comfy couch & a pool table. It just feels like a nice spot to hang out, relax, & have a few beers. & if drinking good beers gets you ambitious enough to try making good beers, there's a home brew shop in the corner. I'm liking Bear Roots Brewing & I'm sure I'll find my way back here. The Bear Cookie alone would be good enough reason for a return. But there's also plenty of other good beers here too & the taproom/ bar space is a great place to enjoy those beers. read more

The space has really evolved from mostly selling brewing equipment to adding more places to sit, a pool table, games, and an outside patio. Decorated in raw wood, it's a casual, hang out and chill brewery. They offer a great variety of beer and one if the smoothest, creamiest stouts around. Their Bear Cookie - chocolate, peanut butter Stout on nitro - is equal to if not better than Belching Beaver's Peanut Butter stout. Stouts are my drink of choice and I'm extremely discerning aka picky about the beers I drink. Marisco's food truck is there everyday. Their $2 fish tacos are the bomb! For a few bucks you get a good meal that complements your brew. The only negatives: a single bathroom, limited parking, and the music is really loud. read more

I came here for a Yelp Elite Event and have to say this new Vista brewery is doing everything right. They have the industrial feel, a decent size tasting room with nice bar area and several tables, they have several menus for ordering food from nearby restaurants, the staff are amazingly friendly and knowledgable of their beers (e.g. What hops and flavors to expect in each offering). I really enjoyed the Nelson IPA (similar to Alpines if you've had theirs) and the Black IPA was quite good. I am eager to return to try some of the others on my next visit including their signature Pale and the Peanut Butter Stout. The craft beer supplies within the space are plentiful and you can get your grains, sanitizing supplies, and brewing equipment. They have a good selection of yeasts in their fridge as well. According to a secret source, the brew staff will give you the recipe to any of their beers on request. The place may be hard to locate at night as they only have a temporary unlit banner draped over as of Feb 2016 when I visited, but GPS address is right on - just look for a small strip mall with not much parking, so most likely park on street out front. read more

I tried Ginger's Island, which was too heavy with vanilla and pretty sweet (good girly drink). I tried Lost in Translation and loved it! A delicious citrus wheat ale that's crisp with very subtle flavors. The taco truck was great. The Marlyn (smoked fish) was incredible. The shrimp one was good too. The atmosphere is nice. I really had no idea what to expect when I pulled up to Bear Roots. From the first impression to the last, though, it was consistently good. They made a new fan. The Bear Roots delivery van was parked out front; I took it as a good sign that they spent some effort making it look good. There was a food truck, too, which is also always a positive, too. The interior is smaller than a lot of tasting rooms, but it is well done. The large windows facing the street bring in plenty of light, and the woods everywhere create a pleasant and comfortable environment. I had to wedge myself into the last available seat at the bar--apparently, it is a popular place with locals. In sharp contrast to the unfriendly reception I had just had at Port Brewing/Lost Abbey, the following was my first interaction at Bear Roots: [bartender, with a big smile] "Hi! How are you? My name is Larry." [shakes my hand] That's definitely above-and-beyond friendly, and the excellent service continued from there. Larry and the other folks behind the bar were not just friendly but also knowledgeable and eager to talk about the beer. The chatty/friendly attitude was also true of the patrons. This would be a great place to be a regular. The beer was excellent. I've had Karl Strauss Peanut Butter Cup porter, Mother Earth's Sin-Tax Peanut Butter Stout, and Belching Beaver's Peanut Butter Milk Stout. They are all good (listed in order of increasing preference for me). But Bear Roots' Bear Cookie Peanut Butter Milk Stout is unquestionably the best of all of them. That makes it the best in San Diego, and I'd be very surprised if there is a better one anywhere. For beer and atmosphere, Bear Roots is a place to seek out. Go there now.
