Every time we visit Big Bear, golfing is a must and this 9-hole course never disappoints. We played 18 this time around and had a blast. The holes are just the right mix of challenging and fun, keeping us on our toes but smiling the whole way through. A couple of cold ones and a western dog for lunch hit the spot perfectly. The weather was gorgeous, and the people out there were all super friendly. Just one of those days that reminds you why you keep coming back. Very bad experience... Backed up already on hole # (3 GROUPS WAITING !!!!) CLEARLY, THE MARSHALL is only there to be "cool" with the locals, could care less about the game flow and told me in the face that it is wj=hat it is is big bear..... Outstanding customer service and human being respect..... Big bear city is getting less and less customers ( winter and summer)... guess what ! not surprising. So many good things and so many poor things about this place, so it's hard to put together a review with a single theme. Maybe that's the theme. The good... Gorgeous setting, high altitude makes your ball travel farther, very nice staff, fairly cheap, easy to park and play, decent fairways and greens, not an executive course. The poor... only 9 holes, the worst "rough" I have ever played, tight fairways run down cart paths I'm just a 25 handicap but this was one of the hardest courses I have ever played. Completely unforgiving rough so that, if you miss the fairway, your ball is gone. Either 8" tall grass, gopher holes, forest, water or any other way to grab your Titleist and make it disappear. I lost 7 balls on 9 holes. Simply brutal. Why the 4 stars? I'm on vacation, playing with buddies, drinking beers, playing in paradise and, hell, I was the one who hit the bad shots. $40 on a Saturday, including cart and not too slow of a pace. read more

Do you have a choice? No, they are the only golf course in Big Bear but it does not disappoint. A challenging regulation 9 with beautiful views of the mountains (you even come really close to the Big Bear Zoo!) Only complaint- the cart path wasn't finished and ae had to off-road it the entire time. And its not cheap at $45 a person (40 senior) but again, the only course in Big Bear! read more

Found the course to be pleasant. In decent shape, but some greens needed some tending to as some had bare spots. Those that were healed, rolled surprisingly well. Not sure if it's worth $49 (w/ cart) and wasn't given the option to walk when paying. I saw walkers and would have been worth walking for lesser fee. But, for being the only course in the area, guess they can get away with charging what they do. Would play it again, though, the next time I'm in Big Bear, but may wait for twilight times and prices. read more

I've been to this golf course for a few years now. We keep coming back because it's the only golf course in Big Bear. Every time we come we deal with the same lady I don't know how she keeps her job. She has the worst attitude I have ever seen. She needs to realize that she deals with customer service. She looks so miserable and was rude to everyone that went in. Maybe management can teach her how to treat others nicely. Overall, the course looks great. Beautiful weather and views. Sad, when the attitude of one employee can just ruin your whole experience. I even spoke to some ladies out when we were golfing. A local ladies club and they said she always has a horrible attitude. They weren't surprised and they said nothing will happen to her because she is a family member of one of the mountain managers. I have never written a yelp before but I felt it was necessary for the company to know. I won't be coming back even though the course is beautiful and challenging. Looking for a place to spend the rest of the afternoon in Big Bear and we found this place on Yelp. Clubhouse and Proshop located right across from Bear Mountain. Restaurant was pretty quiet when we came, they had some decent food options, we have yet to try. The staff at the proshop deserve all the accolades. Leanne / Leonie (?) is the sweetest. She was so accommodating when we were trying to rent out some clubs for the driving range. $4 for a small bucket of about 30 balls. They have weekday lunch specials for a bucket of balls and food for a great deal. Driving range is about half a mile down the road, literally in the middle of the course. So you'd have to keep an eye out for the people teeing off and make sure they see you before you cross the fairway to the driving range. It's small with probably no more than 15 mats. Mats were in okay condition. Right behind would be a putting green and a chipping area. They have some left over golf clubs you can borrow just sitting around at the range... (mostly left handed clubs). Marshall wasn't around when we were there so there was a group of young adults just going at it on the chipping area harvesting all the grass, digging all the sand, & using their wedges on the putting green... so maybe have an attendant at the range at all times to prevent that from happening? Can't wait to be back and play this course. It looks like a very chill and fun course to walk. Don't forget to check in on Yelp and redeem your free small bucket of balls for the range! read more

As golf courses go, I've played in very expensive courses along the CA coast and I've played on quant little nine hole courses in small cities. This ranks below both. The biggest complaint? Tee times are useless because as soon as they get their money and rent out their carts you are out into a poorly managed course dominated by locals. They get two full hours to play so they don't care to follow any attempt of organization, golfers just wander the lanes looking for whatever hole they want. The lanes are terribly marked, only return players who have figured out all the hidden flags and poorly marked locations seem to know where to play. They usually end up telling us where to play out of courtesy. The maps are useless and golfers don't even follow them. They just roll up to whatever hole they like (because tee times don't matter). I came a day before at 4 to do some work on the driving range. No one answered the phone and the pro shop said their office hours were until 3 (eh?). A local told us the driving range was down the road. It only takes 1 dollar bills or tokens for balls. Who carries stacks of dollars with them who aren't waiters? We came to our tee time 30 minutes early to be sure we knew the rules and layout. We got nothing but just asking our names and birthdates (surprised they didn't ask for our IDs and security deposits). As we checked in we couldn't even find how to get onto the course because the signs point to the wrong side of a ditch and a fence that seems to only be there to keep golf carts going into dangerous curves. Our first hole had no marks, but plenty of time wasted as guys on lawn mowers keep cutting the grass and yelling at us for playing too soon, too slow, or whatever (as we kept waiting for them to get off the damn fairway so we could play). They could of been nice to let us know what was going on or offer their help, but seemed more interested in gatekeeping their sacred putt putt for the locals. Despite being early we still ended up being crowded on our hole as other golfers started lining up behind us (we were playing as fast as we could with other groups squeezing ahead of us, course confusion, annoying lawn mower gestapo being obstacles in the way) and then we had four groups hogging up on us, letting them play through didn't help as more crammed in behind them. Total anarchy. We finally got tired of trying to decipher the treasure map of a course. The teens behind the counter were not too helpful as I voiced my frustration. They called me after I left to come back and gave us a voucher for ski lifts and to come back another time. They clearly are out of season ski lift employees who have the same mentality of cramming as many people on their space to sell merchandise and 7-11 style cuisine, I don't know what the dress code was about when many were people playing in tank tops and shorts They should either go private for the locals (since it's clear they only care about locals) or lower their price because it totally was not worth a chunk of my day. read more

Goodness gracious, golf balls of fire!!! What a blast we had! It is a beautiful course with amazing mountain views and a good challenge too for only 9 holes. We got the golf round & lunch combo which seemed like a good deal. It was. Golf cart was perfectly clean and greens were well kept. Staff were really kind and relaxed, but that's Big Bear. I forgot to mark our scores for one hole by accident, but I'm pretty sure I won. Afterwards, Anne helped us decide on lunch. She said they smoke their turkey breast in house and that it's great....sold. It was delicious! I was so afraid it would be mediocre food like they sell during the winter at the ski lodge...(frozen burger patties from a box, blah). No! It was amazing food handmade by Joey, chef extraordinaire! We had a wonderful time, going again next week. From 3-5 pm, it's only $30 a round. Loved it! read more

Update: After a week and a half I still have not received my refund, I will be contacting my bank to get my funds back. I took my fiance up to big bear for her birthday and this was our last get away before our first kid is born. I figured while we were up here I could golf and she would ride with me to relax a little. When I made my reservation through the bear mountain website the reservation price was $39. After nearly walking out I realized the girl at the desk charged me $49. She said "I don't know what to tell you its $49 not $39 so I don't know what you're talking about". I showed both girls at the desk my reservation and the price it showed and they again said "sorry the price is $49 so thats that". She also didn't know how to do a refund so im sure they're constantly suckering people into paying a higher price than the reservation stated. The main reason for going to big bear instead of to the beach is because I was excited to golf in the mountains and she wanted to see the scenery on the golf course. This kind of business is ridiculous and I'm severely disappointed. Because of this I will not be snowboarding here anymore nor will I spend any money at the resort. Bear mountain resort, im absolutely disgusted with this kind of service. In this day and age you should be thankful that people are spending their hard earned money at your place of business. Especially when so many families are struggling. Never again. read more

I admit that I've never been to an actual golf course before. I've been mini golfing, I've even been to a putting course and a driving range but never a full golf course. Although I don't have anything to compare this course with, I was pleased with it. My boyfriend and our two friends decided to go golfing during our weekend stay in Big Bear. Since we've already established I have no golfing experience, I decided to leave the golfing to the "pros" and I'd simply go along for the ride while sipping a glass of wine. Since the course is only nine holes, it was perfect for a first-time experience. From a non-golfers perspective, the holes seemed varied. Some were short, some were longer, some were uphill and one even included a large body of water to attempt to hit your ball over. Sadly, several golf balls met their demise on that hole. Since we were there in the off-season, some of the amenities, like the clubhouse restaurant were closed for the season. But the pro shop had a couple of coolers with a selection of beer and wine so we were able to get a few drinks for the course. Golfing in mid-October also means cooler temperatures and it was in the mid-50s. I got a little chilly watching everyone play but I think being active and actually golfing made it easier to deal with. A benefit to golfing in the fall though is seeing all the gorgeous autumn leaves surrounding the course. I think it cost about $40 (including tax) a person to golf nine holes and I guess they usually charge a small fee to ride along but they waived it for me (possibly due to the slow day?). All in all, it was nice way to spend a couple of hours and a good first-time golfing experience for me. read more

Greg Conrad helped me with a pre-round briefing. At the start I met Carol Wiese ( this woman definitely plays golf well). Hi Carol, hope to see you next time I come up. Starting at hole one was sublime. Hitting a straight shot off a grass tee box sounded musical (for me anyway). After botching the shot on hole 4, I cried out for Dallas Goldsmith (resident Pro) he is the go to person for lessons. Good news on my shot mistake is no one got injured except the trashcan that resonated loudly---as if yelling---from being struck with said errant golf ball. Must mention cold refreshment from Christina Landaker helped me past the shame. Christina is thoughtful and she drives a clean/fast/well-stocked cart while wearing a pink hard hat. Love it! Season Pass holders are true VIP's and one of the benefits is a 10% discount on merchandise. Playing this course again was delightful and do notice the vistas on hole 4 and 8. Erik (of the Patschull team) was drinking red bull and smoking Indica/India and proved to be an exceptional Golfer. At the 7th hole the Course Marshall reprimanded me (yes I had my cart 3" on the green) for being "out of line." This course improves each time I visit. Secret hookup whispered to me by a local was websites VRBO, Airbnb and Homeaway offer estates on the golf course for rent---could be good for the entourage, family vacation or double as writing villa. We were their over the weekend and had a tee time. The couple ahead of us cancelled due to the guy not wearing a collared shirt. I asked if we can go early and was told no because she was booked. Purchased some Shirts also and was told 25% off and clearly it says in the website 30% off. Did not get her name but she was the cashier for 9/5 at 11:30 am. We can also see that theres a lot of players not wearing collared shirt and was allowed to play. Very poor customer service. read more

OVER PRICED AND TERRIBLY MANAGED! My brother, farther and myself played here today. My brother called during the week and we were quoted 35 dollars for 18 walking. We get there and the lady is super rude and says it's 60. "I'm the one you talked to and it's 60" in a super smug attitude. Then we were stuck behind a group with 2 guys playing golf, and some random guy in a cart with his shirt off drinking modelos swerving all over with his pants half off. Apparently this Is a happy hour course if you don't wanna play 9 you can drink all along the way. Then in front of them was a group of six that the Marshall passed 2 times. So apparently the flow of play doesn't matter. If you like places with no standards come here. But it gets a star cuz the course is actually nice. read more

I have played golf since I was about 14 years old and was actually on my high school's junior varsity golf team. That being said, I have played at many courses in the last 12 years and I found Big Bear Mountain Golf Course to be really great, but you have got to keep reading to find the reasons why. Disclaimer: This is by no means a course for 'pros' attempting to challenge themselves. This is a 9-hole course so it's absolutely perfect for a fun activity during your weekend getaway to the mountains. There is only one par 5 hole, a few par 4 holes and three par 3 holes. The last par 3 hole has a large pond between the tee box and the green. Try as I might, both of my attempted hits just missed the green and the balls drowned. My boyfriend made an awesome play though and hit the roof of the condos behind the green during his tee off and the ball bounced back to the green and landed directly next to the hole! The fairway's looked pretty well kept with plenty of grass and trimmed trees. There were some maintenance guys going around filling divots and the golf carts were very clean. The grass did have a tint of brown in some spots, but it's already getting cold in Big Bear so I'm sure the grass has been struggling to stay alive with the chilly nights. The fall season did bring with it some gorgeous colors though and the views are absolutely stunning from the course. The people working the clubhouse were very friendly and even allowed the fourth person in our party who was not playing to ride along for free despite their $9 'rider fee'. My only complaint is the buildup of players on Hole 1. We had to sign up for a tee time so I was under the impression that we would have a bit of space between players. It's a bit nerve racking when you have 7 golf carts of people watching you tee off on your very first hole. read more

Has a nine hole mountain golf course, it's fantastic. You're not paying a fortune so you can expect pristine conditions. The rough is rough. But if you want a delightful two hour experience, with some challenging holes, this is the ticket. Very tough to get around without one or 2 pound strokes. Two stars for the very nice lady who checked us in and for the nice new golf carts, but that's it. Course was very bumpy and difficult to navigate. No marshals in site, and we (myself and a rider) got stuck behind a 5-some that appeared to be playing for their first time. Instead of letting me play through, I had to suffer watching these nincompoops searching for their balls for what seemed like forever. I should have been able to play this 9-hole course in 75 minutes, but it took well over two hours. Also, there are no ice chests on the carts, so bring your own. To go and play to say you did is about all I can recommend this course for, at least until they groom the fairways and hire a marshal to keep everyone moving. read more

Came here with a bunch of great friends and the feeling was great. We bought 16 rounds of golf, rented like 6 sets of clubs, and all got lunch... we were all respectful and had a good time. At the end of the whole thing we had an experience with Alex and the other staff where I felt a legitimate sense of injustice and arrogance. One of our guys, on the second hole (second time using a heavily used rented driver) had the head break off the club--a clean hit no ground. Seriously, broke right off and almost hit one of our friends. He then had to play the whole round with no driver. Upon hearing this, the staff, instead of apologizing for a bad club & rental experience and offering a refund, they went richter and said it was our fault and charge us a full $150 for the club (and with a passive aggressive rudeness). This ruined the whole experience for the entire 16 guys & we all ended up pitching in for our buddy because we felt so bad. Alex blamed it on corporate rules and bunch of other stuff where he missed a major opportunity to make a good decision for customers. Major fail. We all had grace & gave him and staff plenty of chance to do the right thing, which did not happen. Bummed. There are definitely opportunities for growth here in customer relations. read more

If there was any way to give half of a star, I would not hesitate to give them one. Let's start with the single positive they had. We call at 830 am on a Saturday asking for a 945 tee time, which they gladly obliged. The tee master was extremely friendly and we chatted with him as we left a few groups play through since we were a novice group. We teed off at about 955 in the morning. Our first encounter was one the third hole green, as we had a group of six obnoxiously yelling at us while waving clubs telling us to "just hurry up already." In my opinion, that is some fairly odd golifing etiquette. After our fourth hole drive, we had a couple of course personnel come up and tell us we should be on hole 8 according to our time. At this point we had let four groups play through, since we aren't the fastest. We had a chat with them about this and they simply stated we should "hurry up". I found a course manager, Gary Connor I believe was his name, and had a chat with him. I informed him this was our first time playing golf in over a decade, and that we have been letting people play through. He simply responded with "hurry up" If I would've known they were his unfriendly to golfers in a recreational scenario, I would've gladly saved my money and not ever given them my service. If you want to have fun while golfing, I would recommend not golfing here. Absolutely the poorest service I've ever received on a golf course. read more

This is the worst golf experience a golfer could ever have. Hackers may not mind the condition nor the unbearable slow play but any serious golfer will be shocked at the lack of golf etiquette, the constant appearance of six golfers per group, the total apathy of the club house staff, and the general "we don't need tourist" attitude. Take it from me: This is not worth the money you will pay. Do yourself a favor and drive over to Lake Arrowhead Country Club. A pricey but well worth the cost layout, this mountain course has all the features of a world class venue. Even if you have to drive down the mountain to play one of the courses in Redlands or Apple Valley, you are far better off than playing a three hour nine hole round at Bear Mountain Golf Club. Decent course but nothing special. TIP: make sure to grab a score card. The course layout is not intuitive and you will need the map on the back to be able to find all of the tee boxes. COURSE: Interesting course and fun to play if you are in the area but I won't make a special trip of it. The views can be nice (hole 8 is beautiful) and inventive use of the space. The greens could be a little bit better maintained but it's not bad for a public course. It seemed to be a mix of people visiting the lake (like us) and regulars so the play was fast and everyone seemed friendly enough. STAFF: Friendly enough and answered all of our questions but weren't super upfront with all of the information for people who were playing there for the first time. If you don't play golf often you might have some confusion here. They were great about letting us play another round right at closing time though. The rude and discourteous staff at this course would not honor my round booked on golfnow, they told me it's not there problem it's mine after I told them I came from out of town and was dropped off. My buddies and I spent the weekend at bear and really wanted to golf one of the days so we were extremely excited when we were able to snag a tee time here. The employees were amazing from start to finish they went out of their way multiple times for us. I appreciated the precautions they were taking due to COVID19 and how clean everything was. The course is obviously a smaller one but it doesn't feel like that when you're playing, especially being surrounded by such beautiful scenery. The staff was great on Labor Day to my wife and I. Both avid golfers we knew the course would not be a Torrey Pines. The course is good for where it is. The other reviewers who had bad experiences with the staff were probably impatient and pretentious. Don't be that way to small town folk you'll get treated bad. This isn't LA. The course is in good shape as of Labor Day. The only complaint is the course is very tight. The squeeze in a lot on not much land. read more
